Emerging Artist Award 2021
presented by fortyfivedownstairs
fortyfivedownstairs presents the sixth annual Emerging Artist Award 2021.
A selection of artworks have been chosen for a two-week exhibition in the gallery and online from 22 June – 3 July 2021 at fortyfivedownstairs, with $3000 worth of prizes awarded to the finalists whose work most closely aligns with the Award selection criteria.
fortyfivedownstairs has presented an annual Emerging Artist Award since 2015. The award brings together the best emerging artists from across Australia each year for a two-week exhibition in the iconic fortyfivedownstairs gallery.
The Award is a proven catalyst for ongoing recognition and professional development and allows audiences the privilege of accessing early-career works by exciting emerging artists.
At fortyfivedownstairs we showcase independent, experimental and thought-provoking visual art. The Emerging Artist Award is an opportunity to examine developing trends in the contemporary art scene while allowing emerging artists to gain exposure in a professional setting and kick-start their careers.
Supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants, Future Leaders & The Cuming Bequest
Join us in the gallery on Saturday 26 June for a walk through the exhibition, as well as artist Jo Carroll speaking with exhibition curator Livia Kenney on the business of being an artist and the transition from hobbyist to professional practice.

Jo Carroll’s abstract, moody art is borne out of her passion to create from nothing, capturing the imagination of the viewer. Her serene colourscapes invite her viewers to pause, reflect, re balance and energise.
Jo graduated from RMIT with a BA in Creative Advertising and has over 20 years of experience working in major advertising agencies on some of Australia’s top brands. She has also owned and run 2 small businesses and has a passion for helping startups succeed.
Since having her third child, Jo returned to her first creative love, painting. “My earliest and fondest memories of childhood involve drawing and painting. It’s a strong part of my identity. I feel blessed to be at a stage in my life where I can paint full time and be part of a strong and successful community of artists.”
