The Australian artist Gavin Brown, known for his richly coloured graffiti and oil paintings, is soon to open another exhibition Urban Scrawl, in March 2013.
Gavin’s excitable and bright palette has often been compared to the work of Frieda Kahlo. The colourful textures contrast with the moods of the portrait models – tormented expressions of faces in society are set against vibrant backgrounds, leaving the onlooker to interpret the narrative in their own way.

With a successful career in painting and over 35 exhibitions, Gavin has also worked in fashion, film and design. But all along, painting has been his main love.
Urban Scrawl looks at the busy landscapes of Melbourne, showing images that would often only be seen down dark alleyways and remote streets in the city. The only difference between Gavin’s work and street art – it is oil on canvas, therefore permanent street art. Not one to miss.
Urban Scrawl opens on the 23rd March at 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000.
