Xenia Hanusiak performs at fortyfivedownstairs

On Sunday 14 February 2010 to honour Chinese New Year, Soprano Xenia Hanusiak will give the Australian Premiere of “Visages peint dans les Opéra Békin III. ”  This magical work composed by Beijing Conservatorium’s Head of Composition Zhang Xiao-fu specifically for Hanusiak and China’s leading Peking Opera singer Wu Bixin, was given its world premiere performance on 25 October last year (2009) for the Beijing International Music Festival. The Australian premiere will be held at Fortyfivedownstairs at 5 pm.

It is always wonderful to have a work composed specifically for you, but when it fits like a glove, the rewards for both performer and audience are even richer” says Hanusiak.‘

I describe this work as a Peking Opera soufflé. It is a three part musical dialogue between two women. It embraces east and west tonalities bedded on Chinese traditional instruments sonorities all within the context of here and now contemporary creativity. It certainly has its virtuosic demands but the end result is that it brings a smile to the audience.’

The work is commissioned through the auspices of the Melbourne City Council Arts projects funds and is one of many projects spawned by Hanusiak’s recent residencies in Beijing and Shanghai care of Asialink and the Australia-China Council grants.
