“To this we’ve come,
that men withhold the world from men…”
Magda Sorel, THE CONSUL, Act 2
Ordinary people forced to use desperate measures to escape persecution and tyranny. An opera that is no larger than life for many of our fellow human beings: a family are in urgent need of a visa from an unseen and unheard consul. Their predicament is a nightmare, which could happen to any of us. Directed by Theresa Borg, with set design by Australia’s most celebrated architect and theatre designer, Peter Corrigan, this intimate, chamber production will immerse watchers in a world of waiting, threats, papers, forms and questions: freedom-seekers meet bureaucracy.
The Culture Project of Gertrude Opera – TOSM aims to connect opera with society, not as ornamentation, but as a means to promote empathy and conscience through productions which promote dialogue and awareness of social justice and human rights.
