Twin is a collaborative exhibition by twin sisters Anne Dash and Emma Dash. Working across painting, embroidery and sequinned textile, the project unfolds as a sustained inquiry rather than a series of discrete statements. Through repetition, gesture and duration, twinhood is approached not as duplication but as relation – shaped through closeness and exchange.
Across the exhibition, attention accumulates slowly. Familiar images of sameness are revisited and subtly shifted; difference emerges within resemblance. Gesture, memory and perspective become sites where individuality and reciprocity are held in sustained tension. Hand-sewn sequins recur as both material and metaphor – registering time and labour while resisting the speed and frictionless clarity of digital imagery. Reflection remains unstable, images shifting with light, movement and proximity.
The exhibition resists immediacy and spectacle. Meaning develops through closeness and return, producing a quiet disorientation in which looking becomes exchange. Rather than proposing resolution, the works hold complexity, thought and contradiction open.
Anne Dash
Anne has loved working with textile since a young age. When completing her Fine Art Degree at Monash University, Anne further explored and developed her signature, emergent and highly intricate practice. Inspired by eighteenth century anatomical plates. Anne combined sequins, patchwork, and paint into richly layered compositions. These works led Anne to winning the Mama Duke Painting Prize at the Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition.
Anne’s current practice focuses on twins, investigating identity, duality and the complex relationship between self and reflection. Through sewing sequins and textiles, Anne uses material as metaphor for mirroring, response, and connection. Utilising the slow and meticulous process of tambour beading, Anne’s work creates a space for contemplation, new ways of seeing and understanding the movement and change in relationship with self and others.
Emma Dash
Emma Dash is a Melbourne-based artist working across painting and textiles. Her recent practice reflects on the experience of twinhood, emergence from and the complexities of shared identity. Working collaboratively with her twin sister, Anne Dash, she explores intimacy, mirroring, identity, and differentiation through layered material processes and figurative imagery. Her work is informed by an ongoing interest in relational psychology, perception, and the way identity emerges through proximity, the traces left by prolonged relation and continual exchange.
