…a journey of outer and inner reflections…
A descent into the mind of madness.
The House That Jack Built is an immersive photoprose exhibition featuring original fine art photography and accompanying writing that explores the hypothetical story behind an abandoned farmhouse in Adelaide.
The experience follows the downward spiral of Jack, whose opportunistic acquisition of the vacant land and building of a house leads to hauntings by a ‘moor ghost’ that plagues his nights and mocks his attempts to grow wheat. Believing the land and himself damned, the challenges of drought and the dark reaches of his own mind force an ultimate tragic act in an act of spite against the spectre that haunts him.
It’s a journey of outer and inner reflections, exploring the fragmenting of mind and sanity during times of adversity, when hopes and dreams transgress into nightmares.
Artist Statement
“Through combining writing and photography I seek to shed light on mystery sensations we experience in certain spaces. Gut feelings, a sixth sense, ethereal sensations, a shiver down the spine. What makes spaces magical? Foreboding? Beautiful? Remiss? Via the lens I hunt cracks in the doorways of life which provide a glimpse of what’s beyond and approximate hidden truths I see through written word.
Building upon this with an extensive background in experiential reality technologies, I look to transform exhibitions into immersive environments that reflect sentiments of the captured spaces and build abstract layers that complement the core narrative theme.”
