I work in watercolour for its immediacy and translucency, to construct a visual narrative, which asks questions concerning humankind’s sense of place and relationship to the natural world.
This body of work is a close, personal observation of life in two very different gardens, located on opposite sides of the world. In each, the human inhabitants strive to co-exist with nature.
Drawing from my immediate environment, and inserting human elements such as poetry and music, I construct an intricate tangle of life.
The patterns and forms that reoccur in nature apply to us too, as does the cycle of life and death. The natural world is not something other. We are a part of nature, not apart from it, and if we lose touch with nature, we lose our sense of place in the world.
Carolyn Roberts is a multi-media artist who now works mainly in watercolour and mixed media works on paper. Her love of watercolour comes from its freshness, directness and immediacy; also from a stubborn determination to master this difficult medium.
The artist has spent the last 12 years living between Melbourne and rural Normandy, which has influenced her work to a great extent. She has long been interested in questions of time and place and identity and how these issues are interwoven with the natural world and the cycle of life.
She prefers to examine the small rather than the big picture, so that her works are concerned with the minutiae of the landscape – the little things that make up the whole.
Informed by, but not bound by the rules of botanical and scientific illustration, she deconstructs her environment in order to better understand it.
Carolyn has a long exhibition history and has won several awards. She has works in both private and public collections.
She has a Master of Fine Arts from Monash University.
