Exploring a world of styles and influences from jazz to latin, funk, reggae, and soul, with a fresh and open musical approach. Danceable grooves, deep rhythmic bass lines, and driving percussion characterise the group’s sound.

The band members have all recorded and toured nationally and internationally in Australia, Canada, USA, Germany, Japan, Spain, and New Zealand at major festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Tuscia in Jazz (Italy), WOMADelaide, Mordialloc by the Bay, Toronto Jazz Festival, and others. Individually, they have recorded on many albums.  The quartet looks forward to returning to fortyfivedownstairs.

Alexander Nettelbeck (piano), Conrad Henderson (bass), and Andy Horneman (drums and percussion) are joined by Ted Nettelbeck (piano) and Luke Carbon (woodwinds).

Ted Nettelbeck became one of Adelaide’s most accomplished, versatile and enduring jazz musicans, playing for 60 years in styles from traditional to post bop that also took him to the United Kingdom and Europe. As one-time pianist in Adelaide band Schmoe & Co, he has appeared at national jazz events and as accompanist to numerous international and leading Australian jazz artists. An inductee in the South Australian Music Hall of Fame, he now lives in Melbourne. He has recorded a number of albums and his compositions feature in the Australian Real Book

“Alexander Nettelbeck, a pianist of impeccable sensitivity and style, has assembled a supergroup of talent: Conrad Henderson’s superb bass is delicately deadly dancing in interplay with Andy Horneman’s drums which ring in a finely tuned tapestry of rhythmic sounds enhancing the amazing saxophone(s) of Luke Carbon, who plays as sweet and smooth as Tom Scott or as dirty and death-defying as Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The four musician’s  talents mesh together like the elements water, earth, lightning and air making life and love through music. Hyperbole?  Hear them for yourself.  I will not eat my words.” Richard Garth, Melbourne-based musician and songwriter.
