The members of Rathdowne Quartet were first drawn to each other out of a mutual interest for discovering music they believe to be of equal relevance and cultural value as the great pre-20th Century quartets.
Circumstance finally brought them all to Melbourne, and an ensemble dedicated to bringing newfangled energies to the great quartets was born, as well as an enthusiasm for the championing and commissioning of new contemporary works. In this concert, they are joined by virtuoso pianist Tamara Smolyar for one of Shostakovich’s best known chamber works, the G minor Piano Quintet.
