Premiering at fortyfivedownstairs, Savages is a dynamic new Australian play from multi-award-winning playwright Patricia Cornelius.

The work takes a tough look at masculinity and misogyny amongst a pack of ordinary young men who don’t really know themselves or what they can become. Four friends embark on the holiday of a life time, but their excitement is soured by anger, bitterness and the disappointment of their own lives… as the pack forms, the dark side of mate-ship takes over.

Described by critics as ‘one of the most acute observers of the contemporary social condition’, Patricia Cornelius confronts the realities and nuances of contemporary social behaviour with engaging characters and poetic text. Director Susie Dee describes the language in Savages as highly rhythmic and sharp with bites of humour throughout: ‘Patricia is unafraid to tackle subjects that are taboo or difficult – she is a deep thinker who wears her heart on her sleeve and speaks her mind with candor and fluidity.’

I rate it as her finest play to date… Savages isn’t just a remarkable piece of writing, it’s a powerful piece of theatre at every level. The four men, around the 40 year old mark, are fascinating. Surprising, too. Each has his flaws, but is genuinely likable.”
Chris Boyd, The Australian

“bubbling, scalding, idiomatic verse that amazes ….it is one of the best – if most unsettling – pieces of new writing for the stage going around”.
Andrew Fuhrmann, Australian Book Review

….stunning, stylised work by one of our most original writers, … fearless in raising uncomfortable questions… at the same time, the work is a fine and thoroughly entertaining piece of theatre”
Liza Dezfouli, artsHub, ★★★★1/2

…almost elegiac monologues of regret and reflection … a compelling portrait of fatally flawed masculinity
Tim Byrne, Time Out, ★★★★

Cornelius’ thoughtful and skilfully wrought script deals sensitively with the difficult subject of escalating male violence..
Kate Herbert, Herald Sun, ★★★★
