…local landscapes and private domestic environments which have become increasingly important spaces of both refuge and of tension over the last year.
Retreat by James Grant explores local landscapes and private domestic environments which have become increasingly important spaces of both refuge and of tension over the last year. The exhibition draws on objects which accumulate in these spaces, and which we use to build identity, connection, and happiness.
James Grant grew up travelling with his family in several areas across northern and central Australia, including the Kimberly and Arnhem Land whilst living in Alice Springs and Darwin. On his return to Melbourne, he commenced a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. After graduating in 2016, Grant spent several years travelling and working.
As for many other artists, the 2020 lockdown forced a reset of his art practice. In this recent collection of work, Grant has been drawn to the vibrancy and beauty of his Melbourne locale, and its striking contrast to the rugged, regional landscapes he grew up with.
