Phoenix Trio – Lina Andonovska (flute), Alexina Hawkins (viola) and Harold Gretton (guitar), come together to reimagine chamber music masterpieces alongside recently penned compositions for this unique combination.

Collectively, the musicians have performed with some of the most acclaimed ensembles on the globe including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, s t a r g a z e, Kammerakademie Potsdam and the Deutsches Kammerorchester. Individually, they have growing reputations as international soloists and chamber musicians.

The trio formed in 2008 when they were all students at the Australian National University. After parting ways for a decade, the trio have come together to perform a series of concerts around the globe during the 2018/2019 season, with their programme including a world premiere composition by Melbourne-based composer Samuel Smith, which came to creation by a successful crowd-funding campaign. They recently performed as part of Sundays @ Noon at the Hugh Lane Gallery (Dublin) and the ‘Konzerte im Schloß Glienicke’ series (Berlin).

They are fondly named after their favourite haunt and hang out during their student days.

The program features the world premiere of a work by Melbourne-based composer Sam Smith, sun-opener – a new commission that was crowdfunded by the trio in 2018. When plants are exposed to sounds at 200Hz for an extended duration, their roots will grow toward the sound; when they hear sounds around 1000Hz, they will respond within three minutes by increasing the sugar content and volume of nectar in the flowers. sun-opener explores these two frequencies. The composer says about the piece: “I’ve been thinking a lot about multi-species responsibilities in our damaged world and I thought it would be nice to write a piece that plants and humans can enjoy alike.”

The program also features original works by Brouwer, Bogdanovic and Molino, and arrangements of masterpieces by Bach and Debussy.

Leo Brouwer: Paisajes, Retratos Y Mujeres

F. Molino: Grand Trio Concertant

J.S. Bach: G Minor Sonata BWV 1020

Dusan Bogdanovic: Delphic Hymns

Claude Debussy: Sonate for flute, viola and harp (arr. guitar)

Samuel Smith: sun-opener (world premiere)
