“The lights Flickered and changed colour”.
As luzes piscaram e mudaram de cor.

Jo Gamvros, a Photography Graduate from RMIT University, has been traveling and
photographing the world for more than three decades. Like a moth to a flame,
colour, is the initial spark, inspiration of her imagination. Colour differentiates and
individuates spaces and places, Tone, Hue, and Texture, follow. The peripheral and
sensual activation of the senses, smell, taste, touch, sound, come later, colour
precedes all. From the innumerable locations discovered, over the many expeditions
in search of the next encounter around the next corner, these photographs testify an
ongoing commitment and curiosity to her practice.

Seemingly instinctual decisions, made on the fly, ensure an authenticity to her
methodology. Photographs presented, all shot on Ektrachrome 120mm film, in
preference to the Digital format, ensuring a freshness of Image. You, the viewer, are
presented with the best opportunity to experience what Gamvros has been
courageous enough to seek, encounter and record. Fresh and fast, instantaneous,
decisions are made and actioned on site, in double quick time.

Locations, presented in this exhibition include Spain, Portugal, Greece, Morocco
Thailand, Malaysia and the USA. The recurring theme, “Everyday Activity,” within
built environments, communities gather, buy, sell and share amongst other things
food from the smallest of markets, back lanes, canteens and restaurants, offering
local and seasonal produce, as it has always been done. Seeking and reflecting the
colour of Built Environments that influence all those who live and work there. This is
the colour of space and place that Gamvros seeks, perceives and now presents
through her photography.
