It was my dream one day to come to Australia. The dream is gone, now it is real. Now I ask what I can do for Australia. – Ramazan Ali Najafi

Ede Horton’s current work focuses on people who are part of her world, and our community. Over a period of three years Horton has created a body of work that speaks about ordinary people who do extraordinary work in our community and other individuals who may do so in the future.

Between Us opens at Melbourne’s iconic gallery fortyfivedownstairs in May 2018.

People make up the fabric of our community. As Ramazan Ali Najafi said:

‘It was my dream one day to come to Australia. The dream is gone, now it is real. Now I ask what I can do for Australia.’

Horton’s artistic subjects come from diverse backgrounds with different histories and life experiences. They are part of the glue that holding her community together, informing the artist of her understanding and appreciation of difference.

The project Between Us began with family and friends sitting for Horton in her studio and extended to the wider community. These portraits tell a story of our place.

My innate desire and the driving force when sculpting a portrait is to portray the complexities of the human condition that reflects each individual’s character. Within the fragile medium of glass, this essence evolves by a paring down of the form, each layer revealing its purest structure and detail, to expose the person within.

– Ede Horton
