The art in this exhibition is based on the struggles of the African people, particularly the women and children. Africa is a continent that experiences financial, disease and mental health challenges. Yet, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa receives the least amount of mental health services.
Conversely, Africa is rich in colour, beauty, and creative expression. Brigitte has witnessed the great beauty of the people, the generosity they show one another, and their smiles and laughter. The colours of their clothing and the breathtaking landscapes of the indigenous Maasai highlands are also a highlight for the artist.
Brigitte Marie Pascal has delved in and out of art for almost 6 decades, she began drawing portraits from the age of 3. Her exhibition is a political stance in an area that she feels passionate about: Africa, the pain and the beauty.
Brigitte is a qualified art therapist and psychotherapist in private practice, spanning 15 years. For the past 10 years, she has worked in the area of ‘art as medicine’ with children; adolescents; adults; and recently, orphans in Africa who have experienced trauma. She delivers her evidence-based art therapy program to help clients externalise their trauma. These traumas can be domestic violence, sexual abuse, loss of a parent to suicide and parental substance use. Brigitte is currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate. Her thesis research project qualitatively assesses the healing powers of art. She is also an educator at IKON Institute of Australia teaching Bachelors in Art Therapy and Psychotherapy; College of Applied Professions (ACAP) Masters of Psychotherapy; and James Cook University. She is currently, remotely, training the management team in the Morning Star Children’s Home, an orphanage in Naivasha, Kenya.
