…Unicellular intersects personal stories with sounds and images that reflect the barely-visible and the easily-overlooked…
Unicellular emerged from a research residency spanning Victoria and South Australia’s western Wimmera region and Limestone Coast, during which subaquatic field recordings were gathered from the limestone springs at Ewens Ponds, the brackish water at the mouth of the Glenelg River at Nelson, and from Lake Wallace in Edenhope.
These audio recordings became generative material for an exhibition which positions microscopic, non-human life – single-cell organisms, phytoplankton, the fragile ecosystems already destabilised by climate change – as active participants in an expanded attentional field.
Drawing on the artist’s theatre-making, performance, sound-design and painting practices, Unicellular intersects personal stories with sounds and images that reflect the barely-visible and the easily-overlooked – building on a long-standing interest in giving voice, in all sorts of ways, to the small, unheard, and persistently alive.
Kate Hunter is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance, sound, painting, and installation. Her work draws on field recording, verbatim theatre practice, and personal narrative to explore attention as an artistic and dramaturgical force – attending to the non-human and the ecosystems we share with other forms of life.
Performances include Memorandum (Theatre Works, 2014) The Waiting Room (with Born In A Taxi, 2010-2015) and Earshot (2017-2019). More recent works invite audiences into more intimate sonic encounters, and include MicroSonic (Hobson’s Bay ‘Dear Agnes’ contemporary public art program 2026), and Near Sighted (fortyfivedownstairs 2023). In 2024 she created The Symphony Series (with Rea Dennis) with Rawcus Theatre, and Lick/Leccata (with Katie Lee, Luigi Vescio, and Annette Wagner) at the European Cultural Centre, Palazzo Mora, at the 2024 Venice Biennale.
Kate was associate artist with award-winning physical theatre company Born in a Taxi for 15 years, and has trained extensively in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Viewpoints and Composition. She has studied in New York with Anne Bogart and SITI Company, the UK with Ruth Kanner and Andrew Morrish, and with acclaimed theatre director Richard Schechner. She is currently Senior Lecturer in Art and Performance at Deakin University, Naarm/Melbourne, Australia.
