Rococo Masque Pixiu
William Eicholtz

2020
glazed earthenware ceramic
620mm high pair

The theatrical, campy representation of the iconic Aussie Jumbuk is a familiar character in William Eicholtz’s work. Resplendent in woolly ringlets, these Australians become an elaborate disguise for a newer creature that emerged during lockdown 2020.

Reappearing in the artist’s imagination from experiences during overseas residencies, Pixiu is a pan Asian chimera that invites good luck and wealth, and is auspicious for those who have had a bad year. Pixiu has an insatiable appetite for gold and jewels but costumed in this ornate finery, Pixiu even gobbles down his woolly tendrils.
