The experiences\, sounds and concepts come together to create musical landscapes and images\, both panoramic and up close. \nAdam has a long performance history with Timothy Phillips\, via the works of Kate Neal\, James Hullick and as a occasional member of Arcko Symphonic Ensemble. As a rare ensemble dedicated to development and presentation of Australian composers\, Arcko is  the ideal ensemble to present this work. Originally performed by a 12 piece ensemble\, this performance will be expanded to feature a 21 member string orchestra. \n‘This performance was a triumph in every way.’ Des Cowley ABR of The Usefulness of Art concert \n‘At a time when really adventurous musical events are rare\, this night was a breath of fresh air.’ Clive O’Connell of the Concerto for Piano and Toy Band[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c52e88-5036″][vc_column_text]Arcko Symphonic Ensemble – conducted by Timothy Phillips\nAdam Simmons – tenor/soprano saxophones\, bass clarinet \nArcko Symphonic Ensemble\, described by The Age as “a gift to local composers”\, gave its first performance in June 2008. As one of only a few ensembles in Australia focussing on large-scale\, overwhelmingly Australian repertoire from this and the last century\, Arcko has assumed a unique place in the Australian music landscape. Born out of the question: “what happens to a piece once it has been premiered?” Arcko is proud to be breathing life into forgotten works by Australia’s heritage composers and creating an arc linking those composers with younger composers of today\, playing its small part in the creation of an Australian classical music canon. Arcko has commissioned several new works\, given the 1st performances of numerous Australian and foreign works\, released 2 CDs through Crackbell Records\, is broadcast regularly on ABC FM and made 2 appearances at the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Furthermore Arcko was a finalist in 2009\, 2010\, 2012 & 2014 in the AMC/APRA Art Music Awards in the categories of: Best Performance of an Australian Work and Best Contribution by an Organisation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”The Series” tab_id=”1485319914033-175cd8e8-0ea8″][vc_column_text]Concert 1: Concerto for Piano and Toy Band\n2-5 March \nTwo iconoclasts come together to present a work that combines classical forms with jazz sensibility. Michael Kieran Harvey is an internationally recognised\, classically trained pianist who has championed contemporary composition\, while Adam Simmons’ work with his infamous Toy Band is acclaimed for its unique blend of jazz\, art and entertainment. Not to mention a rubber chicken or two… Read more. \nConcert 2: The Usefulness of Art\n24 – 27 August \nThis suite celebrates the qualities that art helps engender\, including acceptance\, empathy\, generosity\, compassion and faith. “The Usefulness of Art” has previously been performed and recorded by Origami as a trio and as a solo work for MONA FOMA. Expanding the work for the much larger Adam Simmons Creative Music Ensemble builds upon the contemplative nature of the music\, bringing in a more ecstatic experience as well.
