As a photographer\, I am acutely aware of the fact given the materials used in contemporary lenses\, cameras\, computers and so on invariably contain more and more plastic. The transition away from metals and more traditional construction materials has happened in plain sight\, yet seems to have somehow crept up on us. Perhaps this simply reflects the apathy out there in the community. \nGiven the relatively recent invention and mass production of plastics\, virtually every piece of plastic ever made still exists in one form or another. Plastics can take 500 – 1\,000 years to degrade\, meaning the litter found in these otherwise pristine landscapes will likely outlive the natural aspects of the landscape\, and indeed ourselves. \nItems like plastic bags\, plastic containers and coffee cups are typically disposed of after being used only once. Sadly\, a huge proportion of this waste from our plastic addiction finds its way into our rivers\, streams\, oceans and nature reserves. It is estimated that by 2050 that the amount of plastic found in our oceans and waterways will vastly outweigh that of the fish and coral. \nWhile shooting the series I was determined to show that plastic can be reused or recycled and serve purposes other than as single use packaging. Inspired by the years I’ve spent working in the fashion industry\, I started to create garments out of plastic waste products including a pompom dress made using plastic shopping bags\, a dress made from bubble wrap and a wearable sphere made from discarded milk bottle tops. All of the items worn in the photographs have been painstakingly made by hand.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b38d64-8f45″][vc_column_text]Serap Osman is a fine art photographer based in Melbourne\, Australia. She began her formal education at Gazi University in Ankara\, Turkey where she studied radio\, television and cinema\, graduating in 2000. \nUpon moving to Melbourne\, Serap undertook further study\, graduating from the RMIT BA Photography program in 2006. RMIT’s program equipped Serap with the photographic techniques and image editing skills to help her realise her own unique vision. \nHer early work was the realisation of film and digital capture and utilised photomontage and layering techniques to produce images that were intimate and beautiful. \nSerap has exhibited internationally in group shows and has been awarded for her black & white and landscape work. Her recent work has focused on abstract landscape and objects in the landscape\, culminating in the work being exhibited today. \nPlastic and the impact it has on our natural environment has been a particularly strong theme throughout 2017 and 2018. Not satisfied with simply making a statement about man’s impact on the natural environment\, Serap combined her loves of landscape and fashion to create a series of garments out of discarded plastic packaging materials. \nHands All Over is her first solo exhibition in Melbourne.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
