Many never seen or exhibited before but all showcasing Winn’s highly unique\, powerful approach to monotypes. \nBeautiful\, powerful images of nudes evoking a raw sensitivity created both here and in New York will adorn the walls of the small gallery\, while images of dancers’ leap across the walls of the large space at fortyfivedownstairs. \nWinn’s introduction the world of dance in New York in 2007 was fortuitous. Inspired by the NYC Ballet’s Artistic Director describing the aesthetic of his dancers as being like Michelangelo’s sculptures resonated with the artist. \nWinn became immersed into the world of dance and the joy of creating artwork inspired by dance and dancers. Her artwork is saturated with light and movement. \n“With dramatic lighting and beautiful\, strong\, muscular\, lithe\, expressive bodies\, moving with passion and emotion\, it seems so obvious that dance would be a focus for my artwork” \nWinn’s dancers and nudes are not depicted in the way one might traditionally imagine\, but rather in a dynamic\, contemporary combination of expressive abstraction with realism. Winn has created this effect by layering colours onto a copper sheet and then wiping away the etching ink to reveal light and form bringing to life a sculptural and fully modelled figure. \n“With the strong element of chance\, the abstraction of marks and the unusual textures able to be created with rich etching inks\, monotype making is a technique hard to beat\,” says Winn. \nWinn’s most recent artwork is created from in-situ drawings and photographs made during rehearsals of Alice Topp’s Logos. This was one of The Australian Ballet’s last performances prior to COVID-19\, cancelled after Opening Night. The artwork captures the raw power and beauty of the performance. \nVisitors to fortyfivedownstairs can expect a transformation into the world of dance as they enter the warehouse-style space. With its wooden floors\, high ceiling and beautiful light\, it makes the perfect backdrop for Winn’s images. Much like the performances that inspire her\, Winn’s works are filled with great emotive energy. \nCurated by Mary Tokatlidis. \nTo view the complete catalogue\, please visit here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Programming” tab_id=”1646364239586-300988ed-a817″][vc_column_text]Programming \nOpening Night: Tuesday 29th March 6-8pm \nYou are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the opening of ‘Light’\, an exhibition consolidating over sixteen years of artwork inspired by life models and dance companies from New York to The Australian Ballet. \nThis evocative and exciting exhibition brings together artworks from across all periods of Debra Winn’s career. We build abstracted layers to shield us from the view of the damage we are doing to the environment around us.  Do we notice what is around us or is our appreciation of our natural environment only piqued when there is disaster? \ngive me shelter is an exhibition of screenprints based on the images of scapes that were noticed\, and interesting enough that picture was taken – without people in it. \nIn that moment the environment was captivating enough for the person with a phone or digital camera to take a picture and not make themselves or anyone else the centre of that landscape. \nWe take the picture\, create a memory and move on.  In the real world we have a nostalgic sense of ourselves within that environment.  The changes that occur to that captured scape is out of sight and mind\, and missed.  But the environment is screaming for us to take notice. \nThese images weren’t taken specifically for this exhibition. When artist Paula McLoughlin spoke about her intentions for this exhibition\, some were offered up\, and some come from her own pictorial history. \nThey started as personal pictures that marked points in time with places and with that in mind\, McLoughlin wanted to draw a focus to the separation that we as humans create with our environment. \nBy deconstructing the images\, distorting the focus and putting in visual barriers\, McLoughlin wanted to extend a sense of the separation created and confuse the point of focus.  Can you see what is behind the visual barrier or only focus on the barrier? The titles are familial calls to attention – it’s not about sudden immersion but having sustained contact.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-09330738-3426″][vc_column_text]Paula McLoughlin is a Melbourne based artist who explores ‘traditional’ and contemporary printmaking techniques and materials in her practice using lithography\, etching\, screenprinting and digital techniques.  Her practice has included the production of editioned prints as well as installation works. \nHer work has developed over the years exploring the themes of human connection and interactions\, landscape and belonging. \nShe studied Printmaking in Melbourne at the Victoria College and RMIT\, obtained a post graduate degree at Edinburgh College of Art and a Masters from Sydney College of Art.  Paula spent a period of time working as a printmaker in Scotland\, which was a formative experience in consolidating her practice upon her return to Australia. \nShe has exhibited both here and overseas\, with the most recent solo exhibition at Tacit Contemporary Art in 2019 and has been shortlisted for the new CAM Experimental Print Prize as well as the Burnie and Fremantle Print Prize .[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Sometimes we would wander into one of those crummy bookshops that were common then. With empty wallets\, and full of curiosity\, we would saunter in and proceed to casually flip through some of the merchandise. \nUsually these bookshops were run by some smug-looking individual who would spend all day standing behind the counter. They would keep one eye on the till and the other on the lookout for shop lifters who were planning their next easy\, five-fingered discount. \nSo\, of course\, when we walked in\, all attention would be diverted to us. \nA cold silence would engulf the store\, then a certain tension\, followed by the suspicious eyeballing and shuffling behind the counter. Eventually\, almost exploding with anxiety\, we would hear a voice resounding across the trembling book displays; \n“Are you fellas thinking of buying any of that stuff?” \n“No\, we’re just looking” we would reply as we flipped over to another page. \nTo which he would retort: “Well\, it’s not a library\, so get out”. \nIf\, in some cases\, he was feeling particularly good-humoured\, he would respond with: “Well\, it’s not a library so stop wasting my time and go outside and play”. \nWilliam White brings us an exhibition of mixed media artworks and prints inspired by these childhood memories.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de12073-9148″][vc_column_text]It’s been a busy couple of years for me starting with a successful group show at fortyfivedownstairs in 2016. \nSt Vincent’s Hospital now has one of my pieces from the show hanging in their Neurology Department. If you’re ever there\, please look for a piece entitled You Can Never Have Too Many Brians. It should be easy to find – it’s the largest painting in the building. \nIn August I exhibited in a group show at Brightspace Gallery in St Kilda entitled Where were we? It was a collection of artwork by the members of the early 1970s underground rock group\, Rock Granite & The Profiles. \nI finish off the year by returning to fortyfivedownstairs for my first solo show entitled It’s Not a Library. The work is an evolution of the concepts and style shown in my previous exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs. For this show the emphasis has been more on the use on artisanal coloured pencils\, inks and other traditional media and not photoshop manipulation of images although digital photography still plays a major part in my work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
