The Spoken Word Circle encourages emerging and established writers of poetry\, creative writing\, lyricists\, playwrights\, novelists\, biographers\, diarists — all with a pen or keyboard and a fire in their belly for words are welcome. \nWe will be opening with 1-2 featured speakers that we have invited to present slightly longer works to set the tone and inspire the afternoon. After that\, anyone is free to share. There will be a sign-up sheet to put your name down when you come in\, and the sign-ups will remain open throughout the evening. \nWe would love to hear whatever you have been working on – poetry\, writing\, or song – as long as it is under three minutes. This gives everybody a chance to share a snippet of their practice. Time permitting\, there may be a chance to get up for a second time once everyone has been given the opportunity. \nLastly\, we invite you to stay on for casual drinks\, chats\, and community feedback over our specially priced wine\, beer\, tea and soft drink. \nDetails \nMC’d by Zoran Vasic \nSaturday 17 June 4:00pm for a 4:30pm start / FREE entry\n$5 wine / $6 beer / $1 tea & soft drink \n*Featured image by Lisa Sewards is inspired by the words of Alice Bishop\, her book A Constant Hum\, human stories surrounding the events Black Saturday. \n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

With a captive eye only the sound of art can perceive\, a fresh scent is awakened\, an endless story is revealed. \nThe idea for The Book of Fabulas and Scented Echoes was born in 2020\, during lock down. Being at home\, inspired Drasko to open forgotten art books and play with the concept of having a museum in your own backyard. Drasko has experimented with 3-D art for over a decade\, and he developed the concept of 3-D cut outs\, or ‘analogue augmented reality’\, by which he holds a cut out of characters from\, mostly\, European famous paintings and juxtapose them with a background of daily life in Australia\, in photographic work. This contrast makes reference to colonial narratives and puts forward the need to bring stories of yesteryear to life with a new lens; in the land that is our home. \nIn addition to the images\, Drasko has collaborated with partner in life\, the literary translator (English into Spanish) and emerging artist Eleonor Palacio\, who added another layer to the atmosphere of the works by writing accompanying poetic descriptions inspired by the visuals\, to create a single voice. As Dr Bernhard Sachs has described it\, the series presented in this show ‘draws from a persistent and lively thematic threaded throughout [Drasko’s] practice\, a rich Balkan folkloric imaging tradition\, its contemporary analogue in popular culture and its humorous\, affectionate and ironic perspective on so-called high art. The meeting of this with the intense literary tradition of its South American corollary in Melbourne proposes a sophisticated larrikin poetic’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]Drasko Boljevic has an extensive career as an artist working in a variety of mediums. A Victorian College of the Arts graduate (Bachelor or Fine Art\, 1998 & Master of Contemporary Art-Painting\, 2012)\, he started his studies training as a sculptor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb (former Yugoslavia). His art practice\, which includes\, among other forms\, sculpture\, painting\, installation\, stencil art and photography\, strikes an unusual balance between classically trained skill and contemporary innovation. A part of the Melbourne art scene for almost three decades\, Drasko has a long exhibiting history and his work has attracted recognition both locally and internationally\, most recently being shown at the Urban Art Biennale in Volglingen Hutte\, Germany. His stencil art has featured in half a dozen publications in Australia\, UK and France. \nEleonor Palacio (aka Ele Cronopia) is a literary translator (English-Spanish) and linguist who loves diving into art and crafting words. \nThe pair have been partners in life for the last 20 years and often muse for each other’s creative endeavours. This recent collaboration has seen Eleonor tracing a poetic narrative inspired by Drasko’s artwork to create a single voice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

And appropriately for a former Federal Minister for Science\, this year’s celebration will be a live Zoom event. \nOver the years\, the celebration of Barry Jones’ birthday has become a marvellous opportunity for us to get together and indulge in an evening of poetry and music performed by his friends. An extraordinarily well-informed lover of the arts (and of so much else)\, Barry lets us know his favourite poems but is not averse to surprises\, presented by his friends in a program curated by Board Member Julian Burnside. \nWe’re excited to announce this year’s program will include a performance by Australian singer-songwriter\, Paul Kelly. He will be joined by a superb line up of readers including Julian Burnside\, Max Gillies\, Emily Goddard\, Jillian Murray\, Brian Walters and Arnold Zable and a performance by Flinders Quartet cellist\, Zoe Knighton. \nPlease bring along something to drink so we can raise a glass together for Barry’s birthday![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Important Information” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ad9e-0ced”][vc_column_text]Many of you will notice that we have upgraded our ticketing system for this online event. An extraordinarily erudite man of letters\, you have only to dip into his most recent book The Shock of Recognition\, to be both astounded and entranced by the breadth of his knowledge\, and the extent of his enthusiasms. \nSo this 84th birthday will celebrate his passion for music with the premiere of an especially commissioned string quartet\, by Stuart Greenbaum\, performed by the Flinders Quartet. And in honour of Barry’s equal passion for poetry\, some of the great actors who have appeared at fortyfivedownstairs will read their choice of poetry in his honour. Readers include Helen Morse\, Jillian Murray\, Paul English\, Rhys McConnochie and John Stanton.\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c5299a-6bdc”][vc_column_text]\n*SOLD OUT*\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $42\,\nConcession: $38\,\nSeniors: $38 \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]
