Ever observant in this vast playhouse of life\, Reed endeavours to capture a unique\, unrepeatable moment in time\, a slice of reality\, and honest\, unstaged\, comical side at “f 8 and 1/125 “. No Photoshopping\, Instagram or Snapchat filters either\, and shooting always with a camera and not a phone. \nIn Reed’s early years\, he meandered the Elster Creek\, streets and lanes around East Brighton\, peeking into strangers’ backyards or just rambling for a quiet time alone. Reed’s father was a rag and bone man\, collecting iron\, copper and lead to make ends meet. Reed has assimilated him with his books\, art and human detritus and with now more so his photographic witticisms. With his first camera\, Reed ventured out at first to document his “sightseeing” and wanderings in a VW. \nIn 35 years as a film editor\, he observed\, selected\, evaluated\, spotted the good takes of wild or planned action rolling through at 25 frames a second. He learned to compute and react very quickly “to see”. So\, when not chasing deadlines\, Reed was out capturing the quirky world around him in grain and pixel during the short infrequent breaks in the torrent of brain numbing schedules. Now off the time line\, photography is number one priority for expression and creativity\, ever seeking the comedy or odd twist and from “outside the square”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933ba3a-e619″][vc_column_text]\nIt is hard for friends and colleges to understand Mike Reed in any way other than what he did day in day out … and nights too. \nHe has been film editing for 42 years\, yet photography has always afforded him his only private creative outlet for all those years. \nPhotography was portable\, instantaneous and satisfying in his short breaks from the screaming schedules (editing and running the business was soaking up his concentration 60-100 hours a week). \nHis camera was always there as he roamed his backyard and afar\, eyes alert for something that would catch his attention. \nHe’s always been a hoarder\, all things rusty\, crusty and novel. Photography is a further collection of moments. Quirky and delicious. \nEditing trained his eye to detail\, decision and dialogue. Culture\, creativity and cooking are also amongst his other pursuits. \nSo now retired from the maddening advertising affray\, he is armed with his cameras and visual diary passionately pursuing his love of the world around him. \nmikereedphotography.com\n@mikereedphoto \nCV[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”ARTIST TALK Saturday 27 February” tab_id=”1611719408714-fe824a82-5e81″][vc_column_text]3000 Streets\nTalk by Mike Reed\nSaturday 27 February\, 1.30pm \nAs part of his solo exhibition 3000 Streets\, Mike Reed will give an artist talk about his photographic wanderings leading to this exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs. \nFREE EVENT\, spaces may be limited. \nPlease RSVP to communications@fortyfivedownstairs.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

With three decades of evolving an enigmatic relationship with water\, Jack Tar and Co. has been immersed by the depths and embraced by the shallows of water since infancy. \nHaving explored much of the Australian Eastern seaboard through surfing\, and taken to diving in the Royal Australian Navy\, photography became a pursuit to learn how to capture the romantic dance between liquid and light through photography at the University of Wollongong. Furthering this knowledge through the RMIT Master of Photography program\, Jack Tar and Co. welcomes you to a soft and subtle style that is untethered from the inherent sharpness of foundational photographic principles. \nWater Bending Off A Rock remains a work in progress that appears to be the only remedy for a melancholic castaway madness\, in its simplicity and beauty – all a reflection of an escape into the natural world. This series of photographs represents the endless flow of the water cycle and how water continues on a path\, always adapting to its surrounds on its endeavours. Jack Tar and Co. embarks on journeys to find the romance of liquid and light through weirs and river bends beneath cascading waterfalls. It is set to remind us of the value of water as a natural commodity and its limiting supply. It often reminds us of the present and how our time with water is now limited. Capturing these images remind us how beautiful nature is in its uninterrupted state. \n  \nWater Bending Off A Rock is presented in three chronological chapters; Water Bending Off A Rock (2017)\, Freshwater | Saltwater Study (2018-2019)\, and As Above So Below (2019). The works explore the dance between liquid and light through subtle colour tones and a dullness in clarity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The stark and isolated landscapes of Thomas K Lee’s work invokes feelings of loneliness and awe\, and the notion that the natural environment is harsh and unforgiving. \nThe series contrasts the differing geographic elements and landscapes of Mustang\, Nepal\, and Tasmania\, Australia. The ensuing photographs capture the essence of nature in both Nepal and Tasmania. \nLee captures the wide and deep ancient forests of the Tasmanian landscape\, conveying a feminine energy. The Mustang land of Nepal is mountainous\, bare and dry\, carrying more of a masculine energy. \nThe overall series is an exploration of the many different surfaces and moments that are situated on earth at any time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-093391bd-b7fd”][vc_column_text]Thomas K Lee is a South Korean photographer based in Melbourne. \nIn 2008\, Lee moved to Tasmania. Having observed the untouched beauty of the state\, he was inspired to preserve the ancient forests\, alpine ranges\, pristine coastline and serene lakes in his photographs. Through his work he seeks to share and protect the images of the pure\, natural environment. \nIn 2014\, Lee decided to pursue photography in a professional capacity. He moved to Melbourne with his family to formally study photography at RMIT. \nLee is currently undertaking a Master of Photography at RMIT\, while working as a commercial photographer. His photography captures the essence of nature. He aims to raise money selling fine art images and photo books of the Tasmanian landscape\, donating funds to preserve the wilderness. \nThomas K Lee is always on the hunt to distill the essence of wilderness in all its majesty\, into a single shot.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
