This recital was the third in a series of five recitals curated by Coady Green at fortyfivedownstairs\, which featured some of Melbourne’s brightest stars of classical and contemporary performance including Collide\, Solstice Trio\, Duo Eclettico\, Coady Green and Christopher Smith. \nThe members of Rathdowne Quartet were first drawn to each other out of a mutual interest for discovering music they believe to be of equal relevance and cultural value as the great pre-20th Century quartets. \nCircumstance finally brought them all to Melbourne\, and an ensemble dedicated to bringing newfangled energies to the great quartets was born\, as well as an enthusiasm for the championing and commissioning of new contemporary works. In this concert\, they are joined by virtuoso pianist Tamara Smolyar for one of Shostakovich’s best known chamber works\, the G minor Piano Quintet.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Program” tab_id=”1628658542807-940071e6-1de1″][vc_column_text]Schumann\nString Quartet Opus 41 No. 3 \nShostakovich\nPiano Quintet in G minor Opus 57[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1357d-2aab”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nWatch at home: $15 \n  \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]book to watch at home [/vc_column][/vc_row]

In Australia\, they are the only pianists to have performed the six Hungarian Rhapsodies that Liszt prepared for four hands from the orchestral versions. Here\, they add the two additional Rhapsodies Liszt prepared for four hands\, making the first complete Australian performance of this dazzlingly virtuosic set of pieces\, known for their fiendish technical demands.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Program” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f17e82-5a9d”][vc_column_text]Franz Liszt\nHungarian Rhapsodies for Piano Four Hands S621 \nNo. 1 in F minor S621/1 (after Rapsodie hongroise XIV\, S244/14)\nNo. 4 in C sharp minor S621/4 (after Rapsodie hongroise XII\, S244/12)\nNo. 16 Rapsodie hongroise in A minor S622ii (from S244/16ii)\nNo. 2 in D minor/G major S621/2 (after Rapsodie hongroise II\, S244/2) \nNo. 3 in D major S621/3 (after Rapsodie hongroise VI\, S244/6)\nNo. 19 Rapsodie hongroise in D minor S623a (from S244/19) ‘d’apres les “Csárdás nobles” de K. This recital was the first in a series of five recitals curated by Coady Green at fortyfivedownstairs\, which featured some of Melbourne’s brightest stars of classical and contemporary performance including Collide\, Solstice Trio\, Christopher Smith and the Rathdowne Quartet. \nSolicitude\n2020 saw the 97th birthday of Pulitzer Prize winning American composer and diarist Ned Rorem and\, in October\, the 90th birthday of Australian London-based composer John Carmichael. This program features Australian premieres of works by both composers\, including a new conclusion to Carmichael’s Latin American Dances\, written for Duo Eclettico for this recital and sent to them fresh off the press. \nIn 2020\, Duo Eclettico received a grant from City of Melbourne to establish an award for young composers. The recipient of this prize\, Gulliver Poole\, has his new work Solicitude premiered in this concert. The concert will also include a sneak preview of one movement from Linda Kouvaras’s new work for Duo Eclettico Night Pieces. The world premiere of this major new cycle will be held in November 2021 at Melbourne Recital Centre. The concert opens with Kenealy’s own arrangement of Bach’s scintillating A Minor Violin Concerto\, which reinvents the virtuosity of the original by transferring to the saxophone\, requiring complex dexterity and circular breathing techniques.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Program” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f13b22-ddc7″][vc_column_text]S.
