His delicate and ethereal compositions reveal a preoccupation with surfaces\, layers and light. \nCrawling Through the Dust of Life is an exhibition of new work comprised of mixed media works on paper and a group of large-scale works on canvas.  This series has developed from an ongoing body of work in which abstract compositions are derived from natural forms and patterns. Rich surfaces are built through layers of texture and glaze. The final image emerges from a reductive process in which layers are stripped back with a palette knife. With densely textured surfaces creating movement and space\, the work is suspended somewhere between the metaphysical and material. While referring to the natural world the images ultimately evoke otherworldliness and suggest an internal process of revelation. \nThe exhibition features a large diptych\, the same dimensions (200.0 x 600.0 cm) as Claude Monet’s Water Lily Pond on permanent display at the beautiful Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima Island\, Japan. It was a photo of this gallery\, with visitors dwarfed by the Monet diptych\, which provided the idea to embark on a work of this scale. The work took two years to complete\, the first year to build up layers of oil colour and second for the painstaking process of scratching back the hardened oil paint. \nThe works on paper have developed over a 10 year period. Earlier versions were exhibited in 2012\, at which time they were principally watercolour\, but have since been entirely reworked by applying multiple layers of raw pigment and acrylic. The fresh layers have been stripped back revealing a ‘ghost’ of the underpainting through the distressed upper surface.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]Richard Besley \nBorn Melbourne 1971\nCurrently lives and works in Melbourne \nSolo Exhibitions\n2015 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2012 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2010 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2006 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2006 Gallerie Arcturus\, Paris\n2004 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2002 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2001 The Motor Works\, Melbourne\n2000 The Motor Works\, Melbourne\n1997 The Motor Works Melbourne[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The resulting works move the viewer into the orchestrated pattern of the chosen gesture or expression. \nMezzini collaborated with his performance artist subjects in terms of pose\, style and resulting shapes\, as well as utilising studio photography and drawings in the creation of these paintings. mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um is the result of this coherent theme and statement.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-09334f03-16b4″][vc_column_text]An engineer by trade\, John Mezzini has recently returned to painting after studying at the North Adelaide School of Arts over twenty years ago. After encouragement from friends and a renewed enjoyment of the process\, Mezzini began again. He first exhibited E lascia dir le genti  at fortyfivedownstairs in 2019. \nSince then\, Mezzini has participated in SWISSARTEXPO\, and was placed in the top 100 artworks of the fair. Our ancient fragile landscape is suffering and needs to be nurtured to sustain human life\, fauna and flora.” \nIn this body of work\, Keating depicts endangered environments that are not always accessible to the average person who may never be able to experience such special places. Mezzini reminds the viewer of meaningful personal connections indelibly imprinted and active in the formulation of who we see ourselves to be. \nAn engineer by trade\, Mezzini has recently returned to painting after studying at the North Adelaide School of Arts over twenty years ago. Mezzini has dabbled in the arts in the intervening years\, notably as a musician. His interest in painting never really subsided\, but neither did he fully commit himself to it. After encouragement from friends and a renewed enjoyment of the process\, Mezzini began again. \nInitially working within his previous area of experience\, abstraction\, Mezzini began to re-educate himself\, discovering new interests in the impressionist period and modern Russian artists. This changed his focus\, adapting the principles of the material to further the development of his own practice. \nMezzini believes the interpretation of his artwork is the responsibility of the viewer. His process is to encourage\, not dictate. Closing in on the subjects in the compositions allows Mezzini to manipulate the refractive elements of light\, with the intention of allowing the viewer to interpret the gestures and expressions of his central figures. Mezzini utilises found imagery\, personal photos and drawings as starting points for his paintings\, linking them to a coherent theme. Introducing elements of figurative and expressionist styles\, with an academic grounding in abstraction\, has given this series a raw and unscripted feel\, creating new and unfamiliar visual treatments of the subject matter. \nE lascia dir le genti is John Mezzini’s first solo exhibition\, and runs at fortyfivedownstairs from 4 – 15 June 2019.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

And in response\, perhaps\, to the disharmony we as a global people live in\, the world’s transcendental harmony is depleting. \nThese are times of political\, social and environmental instability. So much is changing and shifting. As we see movements like #metoo and other changes\, there has also been the rise of toxic masculinity.  Janice Gobey grew up in a dysfunctional family\, when there was chaos and instability at home\, she turned to her stuffed animals and pets for comfort\, this led to a life-long love of animals and furry things.  In this body of work\, Gobey has juxtaposed childhood memories with her current fears.  Alternating between being beautiful and disturbing\, the work weaves between realism and more abstract mark making. \nExploring a rich fantasy world\, Gobey often paints from her imagination\, creating spaces that only exist in her mind.  Like traces from a crime scene\, the viewer can piece together clues and create their own narrative.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9efc41a-921e”][vc_column_text]”In a world that is increasingly disconnected and alienating\, I am interested in connecting with the viewer\, giving them the opportunity to sense the emotions of the human and animal subjects in my paintings\, to feel the tactile qualities of fur and drapery.” \nJanice Gobey is a Melbourne-based artist. She holds a Masters and a Post Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts\, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from the University of South Africa. \nJanice was selected as a finalist for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize as well as the Toyota Community Spirit Sculpture Prize.
