This collection not only celebrates their artistic achievements but also sheds light on the positive impact their artistic practice has had and continues to have on their lives. \n“The path isn’t always straight but you get to your destination in the end” \nIn this exhibition\, you will encounter a rich spectrum of artistic styles and mediums\, each mirroring the students’ distinct experiences and voices. As you explore the gallery\, you’ll encounter artworks that offer a unique insight into the worlds these students inhabit. These worlds are often silent\, but the meaning embedded in each artwork speaks volumes about resilience\, identity\, challenges\, and aspirations. \n“Our Worlds\, Our Words” is a celebration of the courage it takes to transform personal stories into visual narratives. From the intricacy of a finely detailed pencil sketch to the boldness of a sweeping acrylic stroke\, every piece tells a story – a story of growth\, of self-discovery\, and of the infinite possibilities that lie within creativity. \n“The blends I use in my landscapes move from dark to light to create a sense of moving forwards” \nArt is more than just colors on a canvas or shapes on paper; it is a lifeline and a sanctuary\, through which these students navigate the complexities of their worlds. In a society where words might often fail to capture the depth of feelings or experiences\, these young artists have discovered that their practice provides a safe haven for their thoughts and self-efficacy to take shape. \n“Our Worlds\, Our Words” not only invites you to witness the students’ creative prowess but also to understand the pivotal role that art plays in these young people’s lives. Through art\, these students have discovered a means to communicate their stories\, their dreams\, and their aspirations. \n“I want the audience to feel relaxed and intrigued by my art” \nAs you wander the gallery\, take a moment to reflect on what art signifies for these students. It is a tool for self-discovery\, a channel for building self-esteem\, and a vehicle for transcending barriers. The artworks speak not only of challenges faced and conquered but also of the immense capacity within each individual to transform pain into beauty and vulnerability into strength.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”About Parkville College” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Parkville College is a specialist Victorian Government School that provides education to students who are\, or have been\, detained in custody\, a secure care setting\, or transitioning from these settings. Impressed by the card’s evocative nostalgia and intimacy\, they were\, according to Luccio\, “beautiful artefacts\, remnants of the past preserved in small and fragile time capsules”. That sentiment was reflected in Luccio’s wonderful collection of small-scale works\, New York Postcards (2019). In Cuorosensa we see an evolution into something much larger in scale\, both in size and substance. \nIn Cuorosensa\, the artist’s bold\, energetic and confident mark-making coheres into recognisable Luccio-esque themes — we see his Eiffel Tower\, his Trojan Horse\, his meditations on the myths and figures of classical antiquity — but closer inspection reveals a canvas of interlocking postcards with tantalising glimpses of the messages they once conveyed. When their contents are obscured completely by Luccio’s paint and ink\, the postcards form something of an edifice\, brick-like in their arrangement\, transformed from something fragile to bedrock. \nArchaeologists are known for digging down to gain insight into the daily lives of individuals who once constituted whole civilisations; in Cuorosensa this is reversed. Here the presumptive ephemera of material culture becomes the base upon which layers of bigger and vaster gestures are built. We see the expansive concept of civilisation layered over the intimate concept of community\, and it is unexpectedly coherent. Perhaps these small acts of practical sentimentality are what is really hidden in the Trojan Horse. What really propels the march of history\, of destruction and creation? Perhaps the idea of a blank canvas is its own myth\, an attempt to obliterate the foundation of community in favour of the fiction of self-contained individuality. \nCuorosensa: A Reverse Archaeology delivers a cracking blow to concepts we like to contain within neat boundaries. Even the exhibition’s title plays with these themes: cuorosensa— a fanciful word fashioned to slide off the tongue and evoke its Latin roots of heart and feeling—combined with the conjuring up of a discipline; a regime of serious study\, fired by applied curiosity. \nAs we move through a period of global upheaval\, there has never been a better time to explore the themes presented in Luccio’s Cuorosensa: A Reverse Archaeology. These works leave us contemplating what will become of our own heartfelt acts\, if only we take the time and energy to produce them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1676079125859-f3fccc2a-ed2a”][vc_column_text]CUOROSENSA\nA Reverse Archaeology \nOpening Event\nTo be opened by David Hunt\nTuesday 4 April from 5pm – 7pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nArtist Talk: The Making of Cuorosensa\nSaturday 15 of April from 2pm – 3pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nArt\, Health and Happiness\nA panel discussion hosted by David Hunt\nSaturday 22nd of April from 2 – 3pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nDrawing Sessions with the Artist\nFor the Love of Laneways: sketching in and around the laneways of Melbourne\nThursday 20 April from 11am – 1pm followed by a tour of the exhibition\n$100 per person\, email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or call 03 9662 9966 to book \nSoaring Cityscapes: sketching the built environment\nThursday 27 April from 11am – 1pm followed by a tour of the exhibition\n$100 per person\, email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or call 03 9662 9966 to book \nSketching for Sanity: How Drawing Can Improve Your Life\nSaturday 29 April from 10:30am – 12pm\n1.5 hour blitz with Marco Luccio on how to draw for pleasure for non-drawers\nFREE: RSVPs essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1676522419739-aba1c5c5-27b2″][vc_column_text]Marco Luccio Bio \nAward winning artist Marco Luccio has held upward of 50 solo exhibitions nationwide and internationally. \nLuccio’s work is represented in 42 public and corporate collections\, including the New York Public Library\, the Museum of the City of New York\, The New York Historical Society\, The National Gallery of Australia\, The National Gallery of Victoria\, The State Library of Victoria and The City of Melbourne. \nHis work has been shortlisted for many major awards including the Dobell Drawing Prize and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing and he has undertaken artist residencies in New York\, Paris\, Italy and Australia. \nIn 2021 Luccio launched his book and exhibition\, Tales from The Greek\, which featured work inspired by the writing of award-winning author John Hughes. Those little every-day moments that make us realise that the little things in life are not so little after all. Examples of these moments include dancing freely in our underwear to swinging our bra off after a long day. Something Special is about amplifying the importance of these little moments of candidness and freedom in a non-sexualised way as to appreciate women for what they are – people\, not objects. \nThe scale of each petite character is to bring emphasis to the energy that something so small can possess – and when observed as a collective of tiny dancers\, we experience the movement and energy in which we are all witnesses to. This current movement of human rights with abolishing racism within society and giving a voice to women – Something Special is a representation of equality\, self-love and the importance of valuing what brings us joy and what makes us human. \nEach character is individual and whether it is your true self\, your alter ego or elements of yourself that you catch in a character\, the end purpose is to spark happiness and stimulate positive change within someone to embrace nakedness and womanhood in all its glory. \nSomething Special is exactly that – something special. \n  \n \nLogan Mucha\, We’re All in this Together\, single-channel HD video with sound\, dimensions variable (Photo: Karri McPherson) \nYoung Australians audition to retell stories from Melbourne’s queer community. \nScripted verbatim from interviews and retold by young queer actors\, this work reimagines historical accounts of public protest\, police brutality and isolation. \nLogan recorded\, transcribed and edited extensive interviews into monologues for the work’s script from Sally Conning\, Jude Munro\, Lizzie Craig\, Shaun Miller and an anonymous Ugandan asylum seeker. \nIn the auditions\, Logan invited the actors to bring their own experiences and understanding of Melbourne’s queer history to the roles. He filmed the auditions and the casted actors performing the monologues across Melbourne. He edited the performances with footage of the auditions and the filmmaking process to re-contextualise each historical account with a contemporary lens. \nLogan works in the medium of hybrid-documentary to tell stories that would otherwise go unheard. By blending performative and participatory film techniques\, Logan aims to find new meaning in historical and contemporary events. His work challenges our interpretation of fact and fiction and asks viewers to question authenticity in film production. \nLogan aims to encourage an intergenerational exploration of Melbourne’s queer identity\, strengthen respect for queer struggles of the past and shine new light on unknown queer stories. \n  \nEmerging Artist Award 2019 Guest Judge \nAnnika Kristensen is Senior Curator at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne where she has curated recent exhibitions including The theatre is lying (with Max Delany) 2018–19; Eva Rothschild: Kosmos (with Max Delany) 2018; Unfinished Business (with Paola Balla\, Max Delany\, Julie Ewington\, Vikki McInnes and Elvis Richardson) 2017–18; Greater Together 2017; Claire Lambe: Mother Holding Something Horrific (with Max Delany) 2017; Gerard Byrne: A late evening in the future 2016; NEW16 2016; Painting. More Painting (with Max Delany and Hannah Mathews) 2016; and The Biography of Things (with Juliana Engberg and Hannah Mathews) 2015. Works are no larger than 20 x 20cm including any frames. This is a completely democratic exhibition with artists’ names not attributed to individual artworks\, and each work able to be purchased for a mere $150. \nfortyfivedownstairs is committed to creating opportunities through artist-driven programming\, and SMALL! has allowed us to open our space to a new cohort of artists and makers.  We’ve filled our gallery with the creative endeavours of a wide range of contributors – over 250 artists and well over 500 individual artworks! \n  \n#SMALL45[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Sometimes we would wander into one of those crummy bookshops that were common then. With empty wallets\, and full of curiosity\, we would saunter in and proceed to casually flip through some of the merchandise. \nUsually these bookshops were run by some smug-looking individual who would spend all day standing behind the counter. They would keep one eye on the till and the other on the lookout for shop lifters who were planning their next easy\, five-fingered discount. \nSo\, of course\, when we walked in\, all attention would be diverted to us. \nA cold silence would engulf the store\, then a certain tension\, followed by the suspicious eyeballing and shuffling behind the counter. Eventually\, almost exploding with anxiety\, we would hear a voice resounding across the trembling book displays; \n“Are you fellas thinking of buying any of that stuff?” \n“No\, we’re just looking” we would reply as we flipped over to another page. \nTo which he would retort: “Well\, it’s not a library\, so get out”. \nIf\, in some cases\, he was feeling particularly good-humoured\, he would respond with: “Well\, it’s not a library so stop wasting my time and go outside and play”. \nWilliam White brings us an exhibition of mixed media artworks and prints inspired by these childhood memories.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de12073-9148″][vc_column_text]It’s been a busy couple of years for me starting with a successful group show at fortyfivedownstairs in 2016. \nSt Vincent’s Hospital now has one of my pieces from the show hanging in their Neurology Department. If you’re ever there\, please look for a piece entitled You Can Never Have Too Many Brians. It should be easy to find – it’s the largest painting in the building. \nIn August I exhibited in a group show at Brightspace Gallery in St Kilda entitled Where were we? It was a collection of artwork by the members of the early 1970s underground rock group\, Rock Granite & The Profiles. \nI finish off the year by returning to fortyfivedownstairs for my first solo show entitled It’s Not a Library. The work is an evolution of the concepts and style shown in my previous exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs. For this show the emphasis has been more on the use on artisanal coloured pencils\, inks and other traditional media and not photoshop manipulation of images although digital photography still plays a major part in my work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This exhibition features works from emerging Indonesian artists exemplifying the dynamism of contemporary art beyond Baliseering\, or in present-day expression\, beyond the ‘traditional art’ Bali is famously promoted and known for internationally. \nThe policy of ‘Baliseering’ was first introduced in the 1920s by the Dutch colonial government to train locals to continue the traditional arts of dance\, theatre\, painting\, sculpture and literature. Visually\, this meant that art portrayed scenes of the Balinese in cultural activities and ‘authentic’ settings that fastened in the Balinese art identity through media and tourism. This exhibition will feature works of art from 11 contemporary Indonesian artists beyond the boundaries of baliseering\, tackling themes of personal life experiences\, environmental\, social and political issues that may focus within the Indonesian context but resonates to the global stage. Crossing: Beyond Baliseering aims to highlight the artistic and thought-provoking talents of Indonesian artists and create a platform in understanding contemporary Balinese and Indonesian culture maintaining a cultural bridge between Indonesia and Australia. \nCrossing: Beyond Baliseering comprises an extraordinary range of paintings\, photography\, sculptures\, and large-scale installations exploring and reflecting Bali’s visual and social culture in the contemporary society. The exhibition will include works from Art of Whatever\, Aswino Aji \, Budi Agung Kuswara (Kabul)\, Citra Sasmita\, I Made Suarimbawa (Dalbo)\, Kemal Ezedine\, Natisa Jones\, Slinat\, Valasara\, Wayan Upadana\, and Yoesoef Olla. \nThis exhibition is presented by Project 11 as part of Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Asian contemporary arts festival Mapping Melbourne 2016. The artists will be in Melbourne for an artist talk on Wednesday 7 December 2016\, Yasuko Hiraoka Myer Room\, Sidney Myer Asia Centre\, University of Melbourne. \nImages courtesy Project 11.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
