Some of these artworks are created without specific references\, while others are inspired by poses crafted with the help of live models. A few pieces take on an abstract style\, incorporating representational elements to establish a deep psychological connection with the subject’s pose and their innermost\, private movements. \nThese paintings aim to capture personal and private states\, reminding viewers of the joy and significance found in expressive human movement and the accompanying psychological experience. \nIn recent years\, I’ve embarked on a journey of rediscovery in my artistic process. Drawing from my previous experience\, I sought to reinvent myself while embracing artistic growth. This led me to engage with performance artists from different parts of the world\, forming creative relationships that influenced the direction of my work. This shift allowed me to explore new themes and approaches. \nPrimavera\, named after the season of spring\, represents both the darkness and coldness as well as the promise of warmth and sunlight. As an artist\, I believe in the importance of describing the world using various stylistic methods\, even if it means venturing beyond my comfort zone and challenging my understanding. I resist the limitations of predefined ideas or singular moments. \nBy experimenting with different compositions\, I manipulate abstract elements such as light and colour to incorporate both representational and nonrepresentational aspects in each piece. This guides the viewer into the essence of the chosen pose and establishes a connection. Through collaboration with subjects\, studio photography\, and drawings\, I bring together the materials and forms\, creating a unified theme. I work primarily with oil paint to capture the tactile quality of skin\, while drawing inspiration from various sources to play with the element of light in my paintings. \nApproaching figure and expression from an abstract perspective\, I aim to present the subject matter in a fresh and unfamiliar visual treatment\, inviting viewers to perceive it in new and compelling ways.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]John Mezzini’s CV \nExhibitions \n1994                      Graduates Exhibition group exhibition \n2019                       45 Downstairs solo “E lascia dir le genti” \n2019                       Art Basel Switzerland top 100 artworks “Ad Apicem” \n2019                       Art Box Miami \n2019                      Emerge Brunswick st Gallery – group exhibition \n2021                      45 Downstairs solo “mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um” Postponed to January 2022 \n2021                      Primo Red group Exhibition – C&H gallery \n2021                      Here again 45 Downstairs online group exhibition \n2021                      Aliorum portrait Exhibition – POME gallery \n2022                       45 Downstairs solo “Monumentum” \n2022                       RED Exhibition – POME gallery \nMedia \nMay 2019 Sunday Age – Art Sunday promotion solo exhibition “ELascia dir le Genti” \nApril 2019 Art Almanac promotion “ELascia dir le Genti” \nJune 2019 News fox Switzerland Australian Artist Awarded “Ad Apicem” \nNovember 2019 Penthouse Magazine online – Print Feb 2020 “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2020 Recorder south Australia “artist roller coaster” \nJanuary 2022 Penthouse Magazine online “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2022 Last post Magazine “Artist John Mezzini” \nSocials \nFacebook: johnmezzinart \nInstagram: jmezz1974[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Impressed by the card’s evocative nostalgia and intimacy\, they were\, according to Luccio\, “beautiful artefacts\, remnants of the past preserved in small and fragile time capsules”. That sentiment was reflected in Luccio’s wonderful collection of small-scale works\, New York Postcards (2019). In Cuorosensa we see an evolution into something much larger in scale\, both in size and substance. \nIn Cuorosensa\, the artist’s bold\, energetic and confident mark-making coheres into recognisable Luccio-esque themes — we see his Eiffel Tower\, his Trojan Horse\, his meditations on the myths and figures of classical antiquity — but closer inspection reveals a canvas of interlocking postcards with tantalising glimpses of the messages they once conveyed. When their contents are obscured completely by Luccio’s paint and ink\, the postcards form something of an edifice\, brick-like in their arrangement\, transformed from something fragile to bedrock. \nArchaeologists are known for digging down to gain insight into the daily lives of individuals who once constituted whole civilisations; in Cuorosensa this is reversed. Here the presumptive ephemera of material culture becomes the base upon which layers of bigger and vaster gestures are built. We see the expansive concept of civilisation layered over the intimate concept of community\, and it is unexpectedly coherent. Perhaps these small acts of practical sentimentality are what is really hidden in the Trojan Horse. What really propels the march of history\, of destruction and creation? Perhaps the idea of a blank canvas is its own myth\, an attempt to obliterate the foundation of community in favour of the fiction of self-contained individuality. \nCuorosensa: A Reverse Archaeology delivers a cracking blow to concepts we like to contain within neat boundaries. Even the exhibition’s title plays with these themes: cuorosensa— a fanciful word fashioned to slide off the tongue and evoke its Latin roots of heart and feeling—combined with the conjuring up of a discipline; a regime of serious study\, fired by applied curiosity. \nAs we move through a period of global upheaval\, there has never been a better time to explore the themes presented in Luccio’s Cuorosensa: A Reverse Archaeology. These works leave us contemplating what will become of our own heartfelt acts\, if only we take the time and energy to produce them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1676079125859-f3fccc2a-ed2a”][vc_column_text]CUOROSENSA\nA Reverse Archaeology \nOpening Event\nTo be opened by David Hunt\nTuesday 4 April from 5pm – 7pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nArtist Talk: The Making of Cuorosensa\nSaturday 15 of April from 2pm – 3pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nArt\, Health and Happiness\nA panel discussion hosted by David Hunt\nSaturday 22nd of April from 2 – 3pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nDrawing Sessions with the Artist\nFor the Love of Laneways: sketching in and around the laneways of Melbourne\nThursday 20 April from 11am – 1pm followed by a tour of the exhibition\n$100 per person\, email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or call 03 9662 9966 to book \nSoaring Cityscapes: sketching the built environment\nThursday 27 April from 11am – 1pm followed by a tour of the exhibition\n$100 per person\, email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or call 03 9662 9966 to book \nSketching for Sanity: How Drawing Can Improve Your Life\nSaturday 29 April from 10:30am – 12pm\n1.5 hour blitz with Marco Luccio on how to draw for pleasure for non-drawers\nFREE: RSVPs essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1676522419739-aba1c5c5-27b2″][vc_column_text]Marco Luccio Bio \nAward winning artist Marco Luccio has held upward of 50 solo exhibitions nationwide and internationally. \nLuccio’s work is represented in 42 public and corporate collections\, including the New York Public Library\, the Museum of the City of New York\, The New York Historical Society\, The National Gallery of Australia\, The National Gallery of Victoria\, The State Library of Victoria and The City of Melbourne. \nHis work has been shortlisted for many major awards including the Dobell Drawing Prize and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing and he has undertaken artist residencies in New York\, Paris\, Italy and Australia. \nIn 2021 Luccio launched his book and exhibition\, Tales from The Greek\, which featured work inspired by the writing of award-winning author John Hughes. Thus was born the first Salon des Refusés and the seed of Impressionism was planted. Using 5 famous paintings as focal points\, this program explores French poetry and music inspired by them through songs by Debussy\, Fauré\, Duparc and duets by Chausson. He is joined by renowned Yorta Yorta singer\, artist and curator\, Tiriki Onus for a preview performance of selections from Professor Linda Kouvaras’ major new work – Herring Island Piano Sonata\, using Roger Alsop’s sound design\, and narrated by Onus from text by senior Boon Wurrung elder N’arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM. \nThe Herring Island Piano Sonata evokes a variety of locations within a 5km radius of the manmade Herring Island in Melbourne’s Yarra River\, with N’arweet Briggs’ Indigenous stories powerfully interwoven through the work.  Here is an inherently conscious reckoning and reconciliation\, a desire for a healing confrontation with the place from where this sonata draws its ideas\, the solo instrument resonating with the species\, entities\, locales and histories of this small but richly historic area in Melbourne. \nThis is a major event and a powerful new collaboration between leading Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. The work is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts\, City of Melbourne\, Creative Victoria\, and has recently been the recipient one of the eleven APRA/AMCOS awards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f191fd-27f2″][vc_column_text]Composer: Linda Kouvaras \nPianist: Coady Green \nNarrator: Tiriki Onus \nSound: Roger Alsop \nText: N’arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f191fd-27f2″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $35\nConcession: $25\nGroup 8+: $25 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \n  \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Margret recalls the trials and tribulations of her husband’s career as Meg discovers the news of man’s first successful flight. Hargrave\, recovering from fever\, emerges to celebrate the successful end to Geoffrey’s race only to be confronted by his wife with the news from London. \nThe doorbell announces the delivery of Mrs Hargrave’s new hat. Its featured Bird of Paradise feathers cause Hargrave to recall his expedition to New Guinea some thirty years previously. The fun and games soon devolve into a fierce confrontation between husband and wife. \nAct 2\, Scene 1: 1876 Fly River\, New Guinea\nThirty years earlier  Hargrave is on board the steamer Neva as part of the Italian aristocrat Luigi D’Albertis’ expedition up the Fly River in New Guinea. D’Albertis\, who is recovering from fever\, questions Hargrave about his drawings and designs\, before asserting his authority as leader of the expedition. Hargrave berates  D’Albertis for his destructive methods of exploration before the Italian in turn humiliates Hargrave for his humanitarian views. Hargrave vows to renounce all personal fame or fortune. \nAct 2\, Scene 2: 1915 Sydney\nNews has just reached Australia of the landings at Gallipoli. Mrs Hargrave explains to Meg that her father is now regarded as a traitor because the only museum willing to utilise his lifetime of aeronautical research was German. She shares her concern for her husband’s failing health but also the comfort brought by the assistance of  Geoffrey\, now himself a promising engineer. \nThe doorbell announces the arrival of a clergyman bringing news from Gallipoli. From the alleys and laneways to the architecture\, the food culture and street art\, the buzz and hype\, the energy and the anticipation of seeing something that you may have been blind to before\, are all part of the heart of the city. \nSt. Kilda sits just south of the city. Travelling over the bay to the artist’s studio on the Mornington Peninsula\, there is an obvious beauty of the landscape\, the ocean\, the bays and the country side. However\, this is not what Jenkins is drawn to. She has discovered aspects not for their immediate beauty\, but for their intrigue and finding magnificence that is less apparent: in the structure\, their form and symmetry\, or the changes in surface that have developed over time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de11eae-7401″][vc_column_text]Andrea Jenkins is a Melbourne-based artist. \nWorking mainly in the mediums of painting and drawing\, her studio on the Morning Peninsula and forays into the city are a source of constant inspiration. \nJenkins has exhibited widely in Victoria\, Australia\, and is represented in private collections in Australia\, Japan\, Switzerland and Scotland.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
