The project engages in the lived experiences of liminality from the perspectives of the transnational diaspora from Burma. \nAway From Home investigates themes of migration\, belonging\, place and notions of home. Drawing on the ‘ordinariness’ of interactions across familial divisions the exhibition combines typologies\, images of stateless environments and domestic and psychological spaces to comment on feelings of statelessness within the transnational lives of the people involved. The significance of the diasporic transnational network needs to be further elucidated\, not only in terms of the political and peacemaking contexts that exist but also through ethnographic studies that investigate the multifaceted identities and sense of belonging in transnational communities. \nThese works aim to develop new understandings of the multidimensional complexities of being a refugee – both home and away – and expand on longstanding traditions of documentary photographic practice. At a time of increasing displacement and familial upheaval\, it is important we take notice of how people get on in transcultural familial situations or how difference is lived on the ground.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de173f0-ecc6″][vc_column_text]The work of Brisbane based photographer Tammy Law explores stories that stem from lived experiences. Reflective and evocative\, her work expresses a fragile kind of belonging in how she addresses themes of migration and home. Law’s images have been showcased in national and international publications such as The Saturday Paper\, Asian Geographic and The Big Issue. Law is the Asia Pacific Ambassador for FotoVisura and produced the FotoVisura Spotlight Grant exhibition at the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2015. She was a finalist in the 2016 Lethbridge 10 000 Art Award\, 2016 Head on Landscape Prize and a semi finalist in the 2016 Head On Portrait Prize. Since 2007\, her work has been exhibited throughout Australia and Europe. Law is currently in her final year of a PhD in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

After selecting forty images to emulate\, Miller contacted John Malkovich\, who instantly agreed to participate and iconic images such as Irving Penn’s portrait of Truman Capote crouched in a corner; Bert Stem’s photographs of Marilyn Monroe; Dorothea Lange’s image of a migrant mother during the Great Depression; Robert Mapplethorpe’s self-portrait with a gun; Annie Leibovitz’s image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono shot for Rolling Stone Magazine\, among others were born. Malkovich\, Malkovich\, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters pays homage to photographic history through the genius of a photographer and his muse. \nLos Angeles-based portrait photographer Frank Ockenfels believes that rules do not have a place in photography. Decades have been spent harnessing his feverish imagination as a photographer and director resulting in a wealth of fantastic imagery that\, by his own intention\, defies any one style. Ockenfels’ unorthodox philosophy permeates his entire process\, from his tactile experimentation in his journals\, to his eclectic collection of lenses – often embracing their defects as points of difference in is work – to the range of personalities he captures\, including high profile subjects such as Barack Obama\, David Bowie\, Hilary Clinton and George Clooney. Ockenfels’ style is both unexpected and provoking\, he approaches each subject with the same respect\, along with the intent to create images that are well crafted\, sometimes beautiful\, sometimes bizarre\, but never boring.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Black Eye Gallery” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1cc8c-a429″][vc_column_text]Black Eye\, a gallery for contemporary photography\, is committed to representing the photographic art form and all lens based media. Not one shade is the same. Each colour holds special vibratory and spiritual qualities – just like people”\, says Sasha Sarago\, a subject in Lisa Minogue’s exhibition\, The Coloured Girls. \nMinogue’s series\, The Coloured Girls presents high-fashion styled portraits accompanied by a response from each participant to the question\, what do the words Coloured Girl mean to you? \nThe girl’s individual responses feature alongside their portraits in the exhibition. Minogue has powerfully addressed and brought to the fore\, the chronic social issue of inequality by playfully painting the faces of the girls to blatantly accentuate their individuality. This technique demands viewers stop and study the subjects faces closely to really see the women in the photographs. \nThe Coloured Girls is inspired by a conversation Minogue had with a model that was rejected by several agencies\, despite being told they liked her look. One agency reportedly said\, it was because they already had one of you. After querying\, one of what? – the model was told they already had a black model on their books. This story shocked Minogue. With 54 different countries in Africa\, it had never occurred to her that anyone might consider there is only one type of African look. \nThere are many diverse responses and yet many repeat themes evident in the messages from the participants of The Coloured Girls. “The colour of our skin should not be the cause of our separation as people of the world”\, says Achan. Minogue hopes that these strong messages can play a part in aiding education and healing the scars of inequality and racism. \nMinogue specialises in capturing\, supporting and promoting African Australian and multicultural models. In 2012\, she began volunteering at The Social Studio\, a fashion label\, shop and cafe on Smith Street\, Collingwood. The studio celebrates the style and skills of diverse cultures in Australia. Minogue has since photographed many of the images in the Social Studio’s May 2015 coffee table book and frequently works photographing their fashion label. \nJosephine Harkin \nJune 2016 \nhttp://www.liberationimages.com \nhttp://www.thesocialstudio.org[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1b741-35a3″][vc_column_text]Lisa Minogue is a Melbourne-based fine art and fashion photographer. \nSELECTED EXHIBITIONS \n2013                             End of Year exhibition\, NMIT \n2014                             End of Year exhibition\, Melbourne Polytechnic \n2015                             Graduate Exhibition\, Melbourne Polytechnic \n2015/16                       Solo Exhibition\, The Social Studio\, Collingwood \nAWARDS \n2014                           AIPP Victorian Epson Professional Photography Awards (VPPY)\, Silver Award\, Ayah\, 2015\, pigment ink on Fibre Rag \n2015                           VPPY\, Silver Award\, Audrey\, 2015\, pigment ink on Cotton Rag                         \n2015                           Melbourne Polytechnic\, Photo Imaging Student of the Year\, 2015 \n2015                           Melbourne Polytechnic\, Outstanding Student of the Year – Creative Arts   \nPUBLISHED BOOKS \n2015                             The Social Studio Book\, published by Melbourne Books.
