He has painted Melbourne and its environs at night (Rivers of Light 2010)\, as a topographical map (Mapping Melbourne 2011)\, a geographic coordinate (145 Degrees East 2012)\, an historic grid (GRID 2014)\, a state of mind (Melbourne on my Mind 2014) and from an imagined Astral Plane (2015). The exhibition Eureka! (2016) served as a visual metaphor for the immoderate ambitions of Melbourne’s architects\, designers and city planners to see the city grow and prosper. \nThe title of this latest exhibition\, Mighty Melbourne (2018) is a nod to Melbourne’s vainglorious rise as a global city\, a vast living organism pulsating with human energy. Powell continues to take an abstract approach in reimagining the city from vantage point above\, this time along a stretch of the Yarra River. From an imaginary birds-eye view Melbourne’s footprint appears smaller\, and abstract patterns emerge that are not evident at street level. \nOn paper and canvas\, Powell attempts to capture in real time what is here today and will be gone tomorrow. A moment in time when the last vestiges of Mighty Melbourne (as it was once coined in the nineteenth century) are rapidly vanishing beneath shiny glass towers\, and once recognisable landmarks are sliding into illegibility\, reclothed in bright new cladding. The almost one million people present in the city on any given day [1] lost in the blue darkness of shadow cast long against towering walls and onto pavements below. \n[1] City of Melbourne\, Daily Population Estimates and Forecasts\, 2017[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3f462-dae5″][vc_column_text]Arthur Ted Powell is a British-born contemporary landscape/cityscape artist\, printmaker\, urban sketcher and advertising art director living in Melbourne\, Australia. He studied Fine Art and Advertising Design at Ealing College of Art and St Martin’s School of Art in London\, under influential abstract artists\, including Roy Ascott\, Anthony Benjamin and Bernhard Cohen\, before embarking on a career in advertising. For many years he worked full-time as an art director and creative director in some of the world’s largest advertising agencies in Australia\, New Zealand\,Taiwan\, USA\, UK and Thailand\, and won numerous international awards for his work. Powell returned to Australia in 2004 to embark on a full-time career as a painter and printmaker. Details in shadows recede\, failing to register\, allowing the stronger highlights to dictate the reading of the image. As in life\, those when the loudest voices dominate the story telling whilst those with the quieter ones recede and become muted by the shadows. \nIf the devil is in the detail then the devil screams in these highly detailed studies that impede a speed-read and demand a more multifaceted reading of one woman’s story as told by 16 others. \nThe portraits are housed in over the top\, highly ornamental resin frames embellished with baroque arabesques and objects both referring to the cinema and the reign of Elizabeth I.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Script” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de197b0-7687″][vc_column_text]Imaging the Filmic Gloriana/The Mask of Elizabeth \n  \nScene 1. \nScenic Description \nAerial shot of London skyline featuring Houses of Parliament\, Big Ben\, London Eye. \nPan shot of people laughing as they disembark from a cab\, collect their luggage and climb a flight a stairs to the Hotel. \nCamera pans up hotel exterior and zooms through 2nd floor bedroom window to \nREBECCA\, a tall\, jittery\, disheveled looking woman\, whose marriage has just collapsed. She sits chain smoking at a desk painting a miniature portrait of Josephine Bonaparte. Her paints rest on an invoice for a portrait of Napoleon\, to be featured on the cover of a historical fiction novel\, but it is his toothless sugar loving ex-wife that interests Rebecca. \nCell phone rings. Rebecca answers\, depressed empty tone to her voice \nREBECCA: Max\, oh Max\, I’m struggling. I don’t know who I am anymore. I’m not who my ex. “…….” Zed\, claims I am. I’m lost. “……” I don’t know who I am. \nMAX:  Heaps of people go cactus when relationships end Bec. \nREBECCA: I’m sitting here doing portraits of Josephine Bonaparte and wondering who the hell she really was. Did she really collapse when Napoleon left her? Or was it his PR spinning a tale? Women’s stories always get sooooooo overridden. \n  \nScene 98 \nSome years later \nMax and Rebecca\, who is now much better groomed\, sit on a verandah in outback Queensland. She pulls out a chocolate box from her purse\, opens it and takes from it 16 miniature gouaches of different actors playing Elizabeth 1. \nMAX:  Why paint these Bec? \nREBECCA: I guess they’re a chance for me to contemplate one of the many women who gave me courage when I was going down the gurgler. After all\, she is such a feminist icon. A woman who was born a bastard\, labeled a rebel spinster\, thrown into the Tower of London\, survivor of both sexual and domestic abuse\, the beneficiary of privilege and yet the victim of great adversity. From all of this she rose to be one of histories most illustrious leaders. I mean\, she really became empowered to be the author of her own destiny and story whilst others conspired to corrupt it. \nDissolve to white. \nTHE END[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As well\, the impact of major life milestones such as marriage and parenthood lend to the underlying humour and honesty of the exhibition. \nArt\, Life\, Love\, Death\, Immortality\, and a Respectable Haircut… investigates notions of morality through the metaphor of movement\, both in travel and through life. Employing a creative process that shifts between chaos and order\, a process itself that mirrors life and death; a balancing act between the desire to cram as much into life and art as possible\, and the inevitable editing that results in measuring what is actually possible. Landscape painting throughout the twentieth century became a marginalised practice in the context of twentieth century abstraction and certain narrow readings of modernism. However\, it remained a vital resource and practice for artists\, and some of the most memorable images from the period are landscapes such as Drysdale’s The Cricketers  (1948)\, Brack’s Collins St 5pm\, Nolan’s Ned Kelly series and Smart’s Cahill Expressway . Today’s practitioners of the craft range from the folk tradition of Sunday painters to highly acclaimed contemporary painters as diverse in their approaches as William Robinson (AUS)\, Philip Wolfhagen (AUS)\, Antonio Lopez Garcia (SPAIN)and Wayne Thiebaud (USA). Ranging from a high degree of urban realism (Lopez Garcia) to gothic-inspired forests and mountains (Robinson)\, Turner-esque studies of cloud forms (Wolfhagen)\, and stylised flattened forms that recall both mid century modernism and pop (Thiebaud) contemporary landscape painting is a vibrant plethora. \nArtist Statement: \nThis body of work has a very simple premise. It grew out of my interest in looking at things in the world around me and making pictures. These works come not from an analysis\, but from an encounter. The work is not a proposition but a set of objects. On the other hand you will encounter recurring themes – I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of urban and natural forms\, and the ongoing attempts to reconcile our lives with our places. I feel very passionately about the particularities of the volumes of space that are uniquely Australian. And I am very grateful for the vast resource of paintings made across history upon which we can draw\, and without which\, these works could not exist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de19d3d-a789″][vc_column_text]Alexandra Sassé is a painter based in Melbourne\, Australia. It is inspired by the overlaying of the shadows of the past and the foreshadowing of the future which are in evidence in our cities\, towns and countryside. \nWhat may appear to be\, on first sight\, an empty landscape carries within it deep indigenous knowledge and culture\, stories of creation and landforms. \nPeople moved through this landscape for many thousands of years treading lightly on the land and taking care of it. \nContrast the impact of human development on landscape\, the tilled fields of Vietnam\, the urban landscape of the city\, the cleared hills of Gippsland where native vegetation has been replaced by imported grasses and windbreaks of cypress trees. \nThe severe impact of a few hundred years of anthropogenic climate change\, compared to millennia of humankind walking lightly on the land which is a part of them\, taking only what is necessary\, taking care of the source of all being.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1d821-e8b5″][vc_column_text]Artist/architect Geoffrey Falk began drawing and painting seriously during his architecture studies at RMIT. His time is spent split between three studios\, Melbourne\, Wye River and Daylesford. The latter is set amongst the lush gardens of the renowned Lake House hotel\, restaurant & spa which he built with his wife and business partner Alla. \nAllan’s work has always drawn inspiration from many different fields. Whilst the early years saw strong links with the land\, the effect of drought and flood etc there has also been a popular series inspired by the intimate nature of hospitality and a 3 dimensional series of still lives. The most recent paintings reveal a return to the landscape – strong aerial views of coastal waters and also the creek beds throughout Daylesford and spa country. \nExhibitions include group and solo shows in Melbourne\, Perth\, Sydney and New York. \nAllan Wolf-Tasker’s work is now represented internationally in both private and public collections.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

His primary concern has been to engage with the paint and by so doing\, surprise himself with the outcome. \nAlthough some of the subject matter is thematically connected\, this is due more to coincidence than careful planning. The inclusion of Royal Park bird-life in many paintings stems more from Hay’s regular use of the park than a predetermined effort to portray the park. \nForcing the paint\, both literally and figuratively towards its limits was the driving force behind these works; finding connections and imagery in the paintings\, has been for the artist\, an added bonus arising from the “age old business of pushing coloured mud around with a hairy stick.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1475045634258-27b5609d-b445″][vc_column_text]Bill Hay is a Melbourne based artist. As an abstract painter and a person of faith\, abstraction offers me a contemporary\, non-prescriptive language with the potential to explore space and light as both subject and medium within the work.” \nThe Metaphysics of Space: Painting a Body of Light is the culmination of Ella Whateley’s practice-led doctoral research in Painting at the ANU School of Art. Building on the rich symbolic and experiential tradition of Western religious painting\, Whateley’s research has focused on the significance of light\, concentrating on two approaches to creating luminosity in paint: materialising light through the materials used and painting the changing light of the real world. \nWhilst on retreat at The Abbey in Kangaroo Valley\, Whateley experienced the unfamiliar monastic tradition of The Liturgy of the Hours. On her return home\, Whateley was motivated to attempt to stimulate the viewer’s sense of interior and exterior space through creating an embodied experience of painted light. Consequently this monastic encounter has resulted in a series of painted investigations into the nature of light and space in which the interactive materials and colour interactions are intended to be facilitative devices for exploring the sacred potential of the image. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de156f2-dcd5″][vc_column_text]Ella Whateley is a Canberra-based artist and academic. \nWith an academic and professional background in Design and Art Direction\, Whateley’s art practice has developed with influences for many different areas of the visual arts.
