Space is much more than just materials. It is the place we find for ourselves\, in spite of everything. It is finding pockets of joy among others and with ourselves. It is community. ‘Transcending Spaces’ presented by fortyfivedownstairs will showcase gender euphoria by exhibiting trans* artists working in mediums that have traditionally been gendered. This is a celebration of trans joy. \nTo exist in a space is not only to inhabit it but find contentment in community and from within. Where trans people constantly feel unsafe\, they have found safety in their creative work – finding and making their own space from inaccessible spaces\, in spaces coded by gender. Taking what you want from those spaces is a powerful expression of trans joy\, trans resistance\, and our loving trans community. \nTranscending Spaces is a love letter to trans joy from unlikely sources\, seemingly inaccessible spaces\, and finding safety from within typically gendered art mediums. This exhibition will showcase trans artists from all mediums and challenge gendered spaces\, whilst acknowledging the vital role of community in making us feel loved and safe. \nfortyfivedownstairs respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which we are located\, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin nation. We pay respect to their Elders past\, present and emerging. We also acknowledge the harmful effects of colonisation in brutally erasing Indigenous peoples’ gender diversity that existed long before the trans identity emerged. Always was always will be Aboriginal land. \nTrans* recognises all gender-diverse people\, which includes non-binary people and gender non-conforming people. You do not have to wholly identify as trans. You deserve to celebrate your own gender euphoria\, in whatever stage you are on in your gender journey. \nSupported by the lovely folk at Bodriggy.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1674802164597-118f8900-da07″][vc_column_text]Tuesday 7 February from 5pm-7pm: Opening night \nSunday 12 February from 2pm-4pm: Low sensory event\, please RSVP to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nSaturday 18 February from 1pm-3pm: Embroidery workshop with CJ Starc. $30.00 for a two hour workshop with all materials provided. Creating intimate encounters with the trans masculine body\, he summons viewers to witness a nuanced and highly personal depiction of his relationship between western Catholicism and gender. @samkariotisart\n \nZoë Sydney (they/she/he) is a painter\, maker\, and all-round snartist (science artist) currently living and working in Melbourne. Under the direction of Kitan Petkovski\, Smyth’s powerful performance is supported by a live choir of four singing Rachel Lewindon’s hauntingly beautiful original score. The result is a transcendent take on what it means to be human\, imagining Christianity’s message of love extending to embrace all those traditionally excluded because of their sexuality or gender. \n“I wrote The Gospel According to Jesus\, Queen of Heaven because I wanted to resist\,” says Jo Clifford. “Resist the profound and damaging shame and fear and guilt that has been with me almost all my life. The works take you through the development of technology\, climate change\, and the increase in world population\, waste/rape of the land resources\, disease/illness and the impacts of these changes to our planet\, society\, ethics and values. \nThe project aims to link historical understanding of eco-systems of nature and the biblical reference (GENISIS) of the Garden of Eden to our current crisis the world/Globe faces\, using cyphers / metaphors and set constructs to establish a central theme connecting the artist interpretation/view of a garden. \nArtist Venus takes the audience on a journey through time and space\, telling a traditional ancient story in the hope within the present and hope for future generations to take the opportunity to reflect\, review and rectify their individual and collective impact on Earth. \nThe need to explore and find a new planet to call home. Or is that to be to rape and pillage the resources to fix Earth…as PEAK is drawing near. \nThe project planning & preparation began in early 2018\, with specific image items collected\, some items photographed then printed to create the visual / narrative.  As the series developed and world events such as the Coronavirus came into play\, each scene electrified the significance of the message. \nThe artist began creating this body of work in solation during the COVID-19 lockdowns. \nThis body of work is collage on large canvas to be sold as an original piece at gallery exhibition. \nPrints of the series will also be available in various sizes (unframed only).[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-093309a6-495c”][vc_column_text]There’s no glimmer with our glamazon.\nShe’s the glambassador of intersexuality.\nThe land of zoom where all creatures are fun and wise.\nWhere did this artsexual come from? \nThe gutter would be fashionable\, but that’s not it. \nYou could say Venus came from Cool City. And you’d be right.\nShe’s been chilling in Cool City until the eggs of genius hatched.\nAnd we love a smart chick. \nIt all started with art and heart.\nA growth through the wonders of the free mind.\nVenus always saw the pinnacle of acceptance would come from those who adore the oomph of the new and wonderful. \nShe is the product of a rampant imagination that found itself applying to all areas of beauty\, business and enterprise. There was something missing though. She found it in the wardrobe of deluxe fabrication. The wow factor made her whole. Her fate was to be a femme. The proper use of the femme fatale if the truth be known. \nOut of the shell came Venus. The fashionistic. \nAnd with such impact. She has rocketed to the galaxy of untold glamour and panache. \nNever has an emergence been quite so fun and phallic. Riding a rocket\, the glamazon … you do the math. \nIn the distance behind this rocketing star are strewn her huge careers in music\, design\, fashion\, make-up\, hair and all the other dazzlers. \nEnter now\, please\, the Glamazone. \nVenus Virgin Tomarz has eclipsed everything. \nThe glamburger with the lot. \nEat. \nAuthor – Ian Buckland 2016 ©\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Where are we going and how are we getting there? Will we be able to accept each other in whatever guise we appear? \n“Behind it all\, the narrative is about equality\, really\,” admits Earp. “It’s also about that fight between Venus and Mars in the classic sense from literature – you know\, men are from Mars and women are from Venus. That fight is in everybody.” \n“Congratulations. Welcome to the world of art\, clarity and invention. These are the only things that move humanity forward. Even technology follows them. Takers are your photojournalists\, documentary and reportage photographers\, whereas your makers are the ones that make a photograph from scratch. Say by building a set or finding the perfect location. It starts with a conceptual idea and is built into something. I immediately recognised what I was. I was a maker.” \n“I’ve always loved the magician’s trick where there’s a woman floating. The magician is putting a ring around her to prove she is actually floating. You know in your head there are strings attached but you still feel as though she is really floating. I strive to bring this ‘magic’ to my photography – to give it gravity.
