Two quite different modes of expression fit for different purposes. \nHyperrealism for the series of landscape paintings from a trip along the Oodnadatta Track. \nHyperrealism denotes a realistic treatment of a scene\, an inventory of detail\, but at the same time something more\, an attempt to give a sense of the experience of the place – or at least his experience of it: The vastness\, the sense of geological time\, of grand and overwhelming natural forces slowly and inexorably at work\, the struggle facing life in an extreme environment. \nIt’s a landscape shaped by heat and dryness\, also by water that now and again inundates it and\, because of its flatness\, floods all over\, turns the earth soft and erodes it. \nThe Improvisations are drawings done in Yuncken’s residency at St Vincent’s Hospital. \nThat began almost at the same time as his trip along the Oodnadatta Track. In his once-weekly visits to St Vincent’s Caritas Christi studios\, Yuncken would attempt to fill as many sheets of paper as quickly and spontaneously as he could. \nPerhaps a respite from the paintings determined by the world without\, these are genuine improvisations\, determined by the world within. No prior plan\, only the spontaneous expression of a state of mind. The game was to try to make each mark lively and interesting and then the next likewise in relation to the marks gone down before. If a subject matter arose along the way\, then good. If not\, no matter. \n“There is no one way in creativity. Different ways not only serve different purposes\, they can inform one another. Operating these two modes in parallel has\, I believe\, made me better at both.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9efcfb4-801e”][vc_column_text]James Yuncken is a Melbourne based artist\, working from a studio on Smith Street in Fitzroy. \nJames has exhibited frequently in Melbourne and Canberra since 1989. \n  \nSELECTED EXHIBITIONS \n2018                Improvisations\, St Vincent’s Residency: Drawings from Caritas Christi\, St Vincent’s Gallery\, Fitzroy \n2017                Represented 45 at 45\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2015                The Drawing Room\, Prints\, Drawings and Bas Relief\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2014                Places Nearby\, More Inner Melbourne fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2012                Walking to Work\, Melbourne\, Inner East fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2011                Vox Pix\, Voices and Images Together Centre for Theology and Ministry\, Parkville \n2010                Travelling North\, Journey to Cape York fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2008                Abstraction and Space\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2005                Formal Considerations\, 257 Church St\, Richmond and On-line \n2003                Sense of Place\, SPAN Galleries\, Melbourne \n2001                Presence/Absence\, SPAN Galleries\, Melbourne \n2000                Represented 8 x 8\, Roar Studios\, Fitzroy \n1999                Represented 8 x 8\, Roar Studios\, Fitzroy \n1998                Represented 3rd Annual Summer Show\, Galerie helengory\, Richmond \n1997                First Steps\, Galerie helengory\, Richmond \n1996                Represented A Four Art 19 ninety-six\, Westspace \n1995                Studio Landscape Exhibition\, Smith Street Studio\, Fitzroy \n1993                Represented Swan Hill Print and Drawing Show \n1992                Represented Studio One’s ’92 Pressing Annual Show\, Spiral Arm Gallery\, Canberra \n1990                Represented Sun\, Smoke and Steel\, Studio One touring exhibition Canberra\, Sydney\, Newcastle \n1989                Images in Different Genres\, Dorette’s Bistro\, Canberra[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Seemingly immeasurable in scope\, this ancient lake literally sinks into the heart of the land well below the level of the sea and holds tenure to being the deepest land point in Australia. \nThe sun bakes its clay surface and shallow waters with such a fierce intensity that the resultant cycle of evaporation forms layer upon layer of salted crusts. Such a harsh environment can appear largely devoid of life\, yet on occasion it can be transformed by one-off local weather events or heavy monsoonal rains that travel for months down the drainage basin from as far as South East Queensland. \nWater begins to fill the shallow bays and arid inlets. Life blooms where cracked earth once stood. Richly coloured algae’s flourish\, fresh vegetation bursts forth and vast flocks of migratory birds arrive from the world over to bathe in its uniqueness. \nWe were lucky enough to experience one of these events. \nDue to its massive breadth and limited vehicle access\, taking to the air was both a logical and aesthetically beautiful choice in how best to capture and experience the lake’s many intricacies. \nWhen you take to the air its true complexity\, variety and immensity is breathtakingly revealed. Salt deposits\, eroded channels and inlets\, layers of sediment and algal blooms provide endlessly subtle variations of texture\, lines\, pattern and colour. \nThe dreamtime story of the Arabana people tells of how the lake was formed from the skin of a kangaroo where it was laid down in place after being hunted and killed. \nYou can almost imagine this as you witness the immense array of worn\, dried and wrinkled folds in the terrain. \nA strong sense of spirit seems to emanate from this land. Mysterious shapes and outlines reveal themselves as you pass over them\, speaking to you in quiet whispers of perhaps more than what can be seen. \nWe invite you to travel through this sensual visual narrative and reflect on our interpretations of the deeply captivating and somewhat mystical landscape that is Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre. \nthelightcollective.com.au[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”The Light Collective” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3b748-1af0″][vc_column_text]The Light Collective is a group of Australian based fine art landscape photographers who have come together to inspire each other to push the boundaries of their craft. By combining their considerable resources and abilities they are able to take on much larger and more ambitious ventures such as the RGB Australia Project. \nFirst formed in 2014\, the visual artists involved are becoming leaders in their field and are renowned for their progressive\, interpretive and artistic approach to image making. As a collective they seek to expand the boundaries of modern landscape photography by embracing the full creative capacity of the digital realm. \nA more noble purpose behind their imagery is to inspire and empower a deeper connection and relationship with this country’s incredible natural landscapes and awaken a greater sense of ownership and responsibility for their conservation. \nThe artists that make up the group are Adam Williams\, Luke Austin\, Ignacio Palacios\, Ricardo Da Cunha and Paul Hoelen. \nthelightcollective.com.au[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”The RGB Australia Project” tab_id=”1519275511313-344b502b-f5db”][vc_column_text]The Red Green Blue Australia Project is a large scale and long-term venture by The Light Collective intending to explore and interpret a significant expanse of the immense visual tapestry of landscapes that Australia holds within its island confines. \nThese colours symbolise three simplified bands of landscape type flowing from inward to outward geographically. Red symbolises the vast desert country at the heart of this great land\, green the richly forested and mountainous areas that arise around its edges and blue the vast ocean and coastline periphery that encircles it all. The map presents a visual illustration of this concept. \nThe colours Red\, Green and Blue are iconic primary colours that hold both cultural and aesthetic significance within these landscapes and also form the bedrock of the digital photography and printing world. The Light Collective has completely embraced the digital realm and its capacity to support a wide latitude of creative expression and interpretation. \nThe larger RGB project is being approached by selecting one unique location at a time. Each area is thoroughly researched and an intensive\, targeted itinerary designed for the entire Light Collective to focus their creative vision on at any one time. \nKati Thanda–Lake Eyre is the first of such areas.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
