This has always been a conflicting idea for Sophie being born and having lived the first half of her life in Britain and now residing in Australia. Sophie’s practise has always explored this concept of place and displacement through paintings. \nAfter travelling to the East MacDonnell ranges last year Sophie began to understand the lure and pull of truly connecting with place. Surrendering to the calm and profound power of the place. \n‘Accepting the Love\, warmth\, solace\, strength\, peace \,protection and respite the land offers’. \nThrough her love of colour and mark making\, the paintings and drawings retell this visceral response of being in Country. Spending time working outdoors and observing the effect colour has on the emotional and physical self\, exploring how this response goes beyond the senses. \nThe scale of the works enables the movement to be transferred through the brush. Painted with the whole body\, inviting the viewer to question what is literally observed and what cannot be observed\, the feeling and soul of a place. Combining imagery with the story that other people will create by travelling this journey. \nThese series of paintings and drawings from night and day are a moment in time of being truly immersed and connected to nature.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1690608795651-6e5fdc0d-7772″][vc_column_text]Saturday 5 August – Panel discussion with Sophie Perez\, Mary Tonkin and Joe Blundell – facilitated by curator Esther Gyorki \nDetails \nTime: 2pm – 3pm \nWhere: fortyfivedownstairs large gallery 45 Flinders Lane Melbourne \nRSVP:  via ticketsearch \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Sophie Perez is a British Born artist who graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 2003 with an MA in painting. \nIn 2005 Sophie relocated to Melbourne Australia and now resides on the Mornington Peninsula with her family: drawing inspiration from the surroundings and everyday life. \nHaving a strong connection with the land has always been what drives and informs Sophie’s practise. \nSophie says her love of paint\, the physicality and endless possibilities of this medium give her a new language to describe the landscapes she emerges herself in. \nAbsorbing the atmosphere of her surroundings \, Sophie’s landscapes have a narrative\, history and memories that she describes through mark making[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

On his return to Melbourne\, he commenced a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. After graduating in 2016\, Grant spent several years travelling and working. \nAs for many other artists\, the 2020 lockdown forced a reset of his art practice. In this recent collection of work\, Grant has been drawn to the vibrancy and beauty of his Melbourne locale\, and its striking contrast to the rugged\, regional landscapes he grew up with. \nEducation\nBachelor of Fine Arts (Painting)\, Victorian College of the Arts – University of Melbourne (2014 – 2016) \nExhibitions\n2019 – ‘Portraits between Alice Springs and Darwin’ – Red Gallery (September 2019)\n2019 – ‘Portraits between Alice Springs and Darwin’ – Rubicon ARI (June 2019)\n2017 – Small painting exhibition Brunswick St Street Gallery (December 2017)\n2016 – Victoria College of the Arts Graduation Show (November 2016)[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Exhibition List” tab_id=”1622431168694-1bb1f4ab-9959″][vc_column_text]CLICK HERE for the Retreat price list.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Travel is her great escape\, from the daily grind of earning a living\, to a world of places\, experiences and romantic atmospheres that bring joy to her soul. \nIn 2018 Sophie’s journey to Hong Kong was different and she needed some support. This time it was travelling to work. Finding an everyday life in a foreign environment where you have no established friends or local connections is not the romance of travel. It’s a little daunting. I found myself – for first of many times – on a plane to Hong Kong. \nHong Kong – China: One Country\, Two Systems: The Asian Century. An Asian mega-city\, an international finance hub sporting an array of architectural show pieces promoting various brand-egos. \nBut what made an impression on me and what led me to paint was – \nThe airport: An artificial island in the South China Sea has spectacular views of cloud covered Lantau Mountain and its form signals China. The mountain is guarded by rows of apartment towers lined up like soldiers. Imagining a life there sends a shudder down my spine. Look in the opposite direction\, beyond planes\, runways\, hangers\, terminals and you’ll see the sea and ubiquitous clouds\, haze\, ships and busy swarms of dredges. \nThe harbour: The water\, where ships come and go as they have\, ever since and even before the British freebooters\, thugs and drug runners stole it at gunpoint. Those same ships I saw from the airport\, all shapes\, sizes and ages\, but mainly the grimy\, ships of work and commerce\, old\, new\, big and little. \nWhat I found was\, I guess\, what was ever there: the gateway to southern China\, to trade and riches. \nA haze sits over it all: the tropical haze\, the industrial haze. Everything is just that little unclear …[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Percy’s energetic and passionate nature reflects in her continued fascination in the balance and sensitivity of fluid line while making her mark. \nThe layering of contemplative\, gentle and meditative actioned marks reflects this passion and was the catalyst for quietude in place and space. This body of work is a series of landscape\, figurative and floral paintings on linen\, cotton canvas\, Japanese paper and yupo using acrylic paint\, ink and black carbon – created in the studio and from the live model. \nThe use of intuitive calligraphic fluid line in my work reflects an honest connection through the artist and onto the surfaces of natural fibre. Percy’s fascination with Japanese calligraphy art is evident in her work\, whilst recognising traditional painting techniques the works maintain a progressively contemporary style.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933c7a3-9ab2″][vc_column_text]Alison Percy is an Australian artist living near the Murray River in Albury on the border of NSW and Victoria. Working in the creative industries has been Percy’s life. She completed an Associate Diploma in Visual Arts while training as a graphic designer in a fast paced advertising art department. \nPercy has developed a diverse range of skills over her career. Her eye for detail and passion for all things art\, design and colour has seen her tutor Illustration\, Design and Visual Arts at Wodonga Institute of TAFE to Painting and Life Drawing at Murray Art Museum Albury. \nPercy’s energetic and passionate nature reflects across landscape\, figurative and floral works which varies from a loose and instinctive mark to one that is highly considered. Intuitive use of fluid line initiates an honest connection through the artist and onto the surface using ink\, charcoal\, acrylic and gouache onto linen and paper. \nAfter 36 years working as a designer\, interior design consultant and calligrapher\, she took a leap of faith in October 2018 to focus solely on her visual arts practice – which has opened the door to residencies\, awards plus ongoing exhibitions\, private sales and commissions. Her first solo was in May 2015 and the upcoming solo exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs in January 2021 will be her 11th along has been apart of 36 group exhibitions…excited by the continued growth\, Percy remains focused on ‘enjoying the journey’![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”GALLERY TALK” tab_id=”1582678435229-e5876ba4-7ad4″][vc_column_text]Taking the plunge: from designer to artist\nTalk by Alison Percy\nSaturday 30 January\, 1.30pm \nAs part of her solo exhibition QUIETUDE of the land\, the figure and the flower\, Alison Percy will give an artist talk about her career as a graphic designer\, and her recent transition to full time artist. The use of intuitive fluid line reflects an honest connection through her as an artist and onto the surface. \nThis body of work is a series of gouache paintings produced en plein air and acrylic paintings produced on canvas back in the studio.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1ff27-19d7″][vc_column_text]Alison Percy is a visual artist living close to the Murray River in Albury. Growing up on the land saw her immersed in nature from an early age. Studying\, working and tutoring in the creative industries has been Percy’s life and a shift from design to visual art is no surprise – coming full circle to now focus full time on drawing and painting. \nPercy’s energetic and passionate nature reflects across landscape\, floral and figurative works which varies from a loose and instinctive mark to one that is highly considered. Intuitive use of fluid line initiates an honest connection through the artist and onto the surface using ink\, charcoal\, soft pastel\, watercolour\, acrylic and gouache onto canvas and paper. \nA passion for life drawing inspires endless exploration into the nuances of the human figure and the development of techniques and use of media. Inspired by natural forms\, Percy’s first Melbourne solo exhibition Captured Landscapes reflects her continued fascination in the balance and sensitivity of fluid line – painting in the studio and most recently out in the landscape en plein air.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He has painted Melbourne and its environs at night (Rivers of Light 2010)\, as a topographical map (Mapping Melbourne 2011)\, a geographic coordinate (145 Degrees East 2012)\, an historic grid (GRID 2014)\, a state of mind (Melbourne on my Mind 2014) and from an imagined Astral Plane (2015). The exhibition Eureka! (2016) served as a visual metaphor for the immoderate ambitions of Melbourne’s architects\, designers and city planners to see the city grow and prosper. \nThe title of this latest exhibition\, Mighty Melbourne (2018) is a nod to Melbourne’s vainglorious rise as a global city\, a vast living organism pulsating with human energy. Powell continues to take an abstract approach in reimagining the city from vantage point above\, this time along a stretch of the Yarra River. From an imaginary birds-eye view Melbourne’s footprint appears smaller\, and abstract patterns emerge that are not evident at street level. \nOn paper and canvas\, Powell attempts to capture in real time what is here today and will be gone tomorrow. A moment in time when the last vestiges of Mighty Melbourne (as it was once coined in the nineteenth century) are rapidly vanishing beneath shiny glass towers\, and once recognisable landmarks are sliding into illegibility\, reclothed in bright new cladding. The almost one million people present in the city on any given day [1] lost in the blue darkness of shadow cast long against towering walls and onto pavements below. \n[1] City of Melbourne\, Daily Population Estimates and Forecasts\, 2017[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3f462-dae5″][vc_column_text]Arthur Ted Powell is a British-born contemporary landscape/cityscape artist\, printmaker\, urban sketcher and advertising art director living in Melbourne\, Australia. He studied Fine Art and Advertising Design at Ealing College of Art and St Martin’s School of Art in London\, under influential abstract artists\, including Roy Ascott\, Anthony Benjamin and Bernhard Cohen\, before embarking on a career in advertising. For many years he worked full-time as an art director and creative director in some of the world’s largest advertising agencies in Australia\, New Zealand\,Taiwan\, USA\, UK and Thailand\, and won numerous international awards for his work. Powell returned to Australia in 2004 to embark on a full-time career as a painter and printmaker. It is inspired by the overlaying of the shadows of the past and the foreshadowing of the future which are in evidence in our cities\, towns and countryside. \nWhat may appear to be\, on first sight\, an empty landscape carries within it deep indigenous knowledge and culture\, stories of creation and landforms. \nPeople moved through this landscape for many thousands of years treading lightly on the land and taking care of it. \nContrast the impact of human development on landscape\, the tilled fields of Vietnam\, the urban landscape of the city\, the cleared hills of Gippsland where native vegetation has been replaced by imported grasses and windbreaks of cypress trees. \nThe severe impact of a few hundred years of anthropogenic climate change\, compared to millennia of humankind walking lightly on the land which is a part of them\, taking only what is necessary\, taking care of the source of all being.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1d821-e8b5″][vc_column_text]Artist/architect Geoffrey Falk began drawing and painting seriously during his architecture studies at RMIT. The course in those days had a strong emphasis on hand drawing\, model making and painting. \nGeoffrey’s work has a wider public element through his practice as an architect\, urban designer and illustrator.
