I think with being somewhat cloistered and remaining housebound and often losing any sense of time’s progress or the world beyond my designated perimeter\, my work became more complex. The vision was more myopic\, focused more intense\, l hope not to the point of neurosis\, but as time seemed limitless there was a slowness to the pace of my work. A sense that I could quietly explore\, avoid the virus and with no distractions\, the work often became an elaboration on an elaboration. Jewellery inside jewellery. \nMy exhibition held here in the small gallery at fortyfivedownstairs in 2016 called The Decorated Self contained similar themes\, my retort to minimalism and it’s structures. I wanted to pay my respects to Decoration. Decoration and detail are cousins and they both allow the eye to travel which is what the eye seeks. \nKate Durham[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kate Durham is a Melbourne artist\, practicing in jewellery\, painting\, decorative art\, interiors\, sculpture and drawing. She was trained in fine art in Melbourne. \nHer work has been shown in Japan\, England\, the USA and around Australia. Kate has sold her designs in several boutiques and gallery design stores. \nKate is represented in major collections\, including the National Gallery of Victoria\, The National Gallery\, Canberra\, Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Sydney Powerhouse Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences\, the Victoria & Albert Museum\, London and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery\, Launceston and Shepparton Regional Art Gallery\, Victoria \nIn 2001\, Kate established Spare Rooms for Refugees\, a project to provide community accommodation for asylum seekers. In June 2002\, she travelled to Nauru with a BBC journalist and thus provided the first images of Australia’s Pacific Solution. \nIn the 1980’s Kate made popular her extravagant\, bejewelled jewellery\, head-pieces\, drawings\, paintings\, sculptures\, busts\, mirrors\, frames and furniture. Kate’s choice of materials from scraps\, remnants\, and rubbish informed her playful and unique anti-fashion\, fashion style. \nKate was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council (FDC) of Australia. A non-profit collective supporting emerging and alternative fashion\, emanating from the street and the nightclub scene of the early 1980’s. \nwww.katedurham.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Programming” tab_id=”1657000836653-a6600828-eeeb”][vc_column_text]Artist talk & drinks hosted by Janice Breen Burns with Kate Durham\, Susan Cohn & Deborah Thomas. \nSaturday 20th August from 2pm.\nFree event. SUMMARY:Uncanny Life - artifact and identity
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]\nJan Donaldson\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]13 February – 3 March 2018\n\nhours:\nTuesday – Friday 11am to 5pm\,\nSaturday 12pm to 4pm\nadmission: Free[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]\nThese objects serve as a bridge between our hidden and conscious worlds. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″]Jan Donaldson\, The Infant of Prague \n[/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_tta_tabs][vc_tta_section tab_id=”1451285630039-f4b33ad9-e290b1db-6de1fbf4-ee16″ title=”Description”][vc_column_text]The Uncanny Life – artifact and identity exhibition is an extension of the research undertaken for Jan Donaldson’s PhD project and explores the doll/puppet as a cultural icon and artifact.  Including contemporary jewellery\, object and sculptural works\, the research investigates the doll as not just a plaything\, but as an object intimately linked to identity. \nDonaldson’s fascination with the uncanny includes experimentation with puppetry and masks and forms an important aspect of the project. These theatrical elements\, which include the ability to express identity through movement\, allow for the exploration of larger narratives\, alluding to the drama and folly of human existence. When inanimate objects are seen to be brought to life\, preconceived ideas about the boundaries between life and death blur. These objects serve as a bridge between our hidden and conscious worlds. \nSome of the works also reference folk tales and nursery rhymes. Donaldson seeks to recover a more sensual\, childlike world\, with all its attendant bafflement\, shock\, raw desire\, clumsiness\, illusion and disenchantment. Though re-interpretation and the re-telling of folk-lore\, contributions to new stories and myths are created and benefit their evolution\, culture and dispersion. \nThe works are displayed in a ‘built room’ installation. Donaldson’s intention is to create an intimate space\,  integrating notions of personal place and intimate themes/settings\, such as the tomb and the theatre\, associated with the prevalence of doll artifacts throughout history and across different cultures. \nIndividually and collectively the dolls reveal the intimate and the personal. Imbued with both historically generic as well as autobiographical associations – reliquaries of the artist’s own contemporary existence – they come together as a collection of individual artifacts that are at once ‘canny’ and ‘uncanny’ in their creation; objects to show our existence – a trace of self.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1fbf4-ee16″][vc_column_text]Artist\, jeweller\, maker and teacher for many years\, Jan Donaldson studied at RMIT University in Melbourne and holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Fine Art\,  Master of Arts (Fine Art)\, and a Diploma of Fine Art in Gold and Silversmithing. \nDonaldson exhibits regularly in Australia and internationally and is a recipient of many awards. Her work ranges in scale from jewellery to large sculptural works and she is known for my use of the figure and text\, as well as for her research into the relationships between objects and identity. Donaldson’s recent work explores the relationships between artifacts and identity\, provoking us to think more deeply about the doll as a cultural artifact. The research\, and her fascination with the uncanny\, includes experimentation into the theatrical narratives of puppetry and masks. \nDonaldson has been lecturing for over 29 years in Regional Victoria and Melbourne\, is a former President of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (JMGA) Vic and past editor of Lemel Magazine\, the quarterly journal of the JMGA.  She has been an artist in residence and workshop instructor at numerous schools\, universities\, arts organisations and galleries. Donaldson is a former gallery director and also has extensive experience working on community arts projects.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
