It is with a primordial lens in mind that Nicholls strives to sculpt universal concepts\, and the emotional impact of our existence.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Born in 1960\, Mike Nicholls grew up on a dairy farm at Narre Warren North on the out skirts of Melbourne\, where he still has a studio-gallery and maintains the family property. \nHe majored in sculpture at the Caulfield Institute of Technology receiving a high distinction in his final year for his fabricated steel sculptures. \nFrom the formal training in abstraction\, where he concentrated on line\, balance\, movement and gesture\, Mike migrated to Fitzroy in the early eighties becoming a founding member of Roar Studios\, his work influenced by the fellow artist’s of Roar\, made a shift to expressionistic figuration. \nBy the mid 1980’s the artists eye sought to simplify his previously visually busy works\, Nicholls has slowly cultivated his quietly methodical practice; paring it back and reducing it to an elemental visual diary. \nMike has sought to incorporate an Australianness within his art; much of his reference has been visually and culturally sourced through travelling on plien air painting trips for months at a time\, spending time on relatives cattle stations in central Queensland and visiting remote areas within Australia. Mike has held woodcarving workshops in remote aboriginal communities of Cape York and the Torres Strait\, ass well as extensive over seas travel. \nHe has developed a deeply personal vocabulary of motifs\, striving to create a sense of feeling and or place\, focusing on his ultimate goal of imbuing his work with expression\, soul and a reflection of the human spirit.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Programming” tab_id=”1667547468743-eb814861-1a2f”][vc_column_text]Opening Night: Tuesday 8th of November from 6pm – 8pm \nYou are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the opening of ‘Bird Call’\, a reflection onto the human’s consciousness of the world that surrounds us. \n  \nArtist Talk with Mike Nicholls: Saturday 12th of November 3-4pm \nPlease join Mike Nicholls for a free event where the public can gain insight into his impactful and inspired work. \nPlease RSVP to this free event by contacting communications@fortyfivedownstairs.com  \nWe can’t wait to see you![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As a young girl growing up in Zimbabwe\, Phiri was encouraged to learn a variety of creative skills including\, crafting\, sewing\, and clay work. Phiri learned to sculpt and mix different coloured clays by decorating the wall plastering of the huts where she lived and grew up. Phiri channels and repurposes these skills in her artwork today\, choosing to work instead on canvas and with acrylic mediums. Her artwork focuses on life through positivity. Through her work she seeks to engage the viewer with stimulating colours and a whimsical joy that draws from the beauty of everyday life.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her wide ranging cross-platform practice covers independent filmmaking\, hand drawn and stop motion animation\, installation and performative events. \nHer work utilizes an observational language that gives expression to deliberate misunderstandings\, absurd irregularities and comic abstractions. She employs complex and refined production techniques to project a lyrical depth and meaning onto objects and landscapes – fully exploring the imaginative possibilities of the ordinary world around us. \nThe integration of music within the context of moving image is a central part of her practice as can be seen in her ongoing collaboration with composer Kate Neal under the title Flight Risk. This collaboration has given rise to a body of commissioned material that includes major theatrical/performance works\, concert pieces and music videos as well as work for cinematic settings. \nSal was co-artistic director of While You Sleep\, a live theatrical performance piece for string quartet and visual media\, which explored the boundaries between visual art and music and premiered in a sell out season at Arts House in November 2018. While You Sleep will commence national touring in 2022. Further works include The Commuter Variations a work for solo piano and animation that was commissioned by The Melbourne Recital Centre\, the award-winning theatrical music work Semaphore on which she was a key collaborator\, and numerous short animated films including Song For a Comb which was a Tropfest finalist and won both Best Animation and Best Woman in Film Awards. As well as her engagement in large scale performative and collaborative events Sal exhibits regularly in solo and group shows. \nIn the course of Sal’s practise she has undertaken several public art projects and attended residencies in Australia and overseas. Her short films and experimental videos continue to be screened around the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Bringing together ten artists\, the exhibition explores the spectrum of effects that the pandemic had on artistic practices. \nFor two years\, the world – especially those of us in Melbourne – was confronted by challenges during the pandemic. Thoughts of vaccine hesitancy\, the spread of misinformation\, and extended lockdowns had severe psychological consequences. \nThe effect of the pandemic on the visual arts community was similar. Artists faced many unprecedented interruptions – studio spaces were closed\, exhibitions were postponed or cancelled\, access to materials was halted\, and many had loved ones to care for. The effect on artists varied widely; isolation encouraged frustrated artmakers to escape reality by looking inwards and focusing on their artistic practice. New techniques emerged and were developed\, new mediums tried and tested\, and different landscapes of the imagination were explored. Artists took the opportunity to reflect on past work and reconsider it in a new context. They found togetherness through collaborative projects with one another\, developing our ideas about community\, love\, and the sustaining principles of a kinder world – a compassion that unites us in uncertain times. \nOut of the pandemic emerged art founded on resilience\, humour\, absurdity\, and the celebration of life. Not only had we found hope through the consumption of art – in music\, books\, and media – artists channelled their survival into and through their creative endeavours. This exhibition is a visual acknowledgement of the beacons of light\, gems of hope\, and human strength that we now irrevocably share in our collective conscience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Yet ninety percent of the mansions of Shekhawati are abandoned\, secured at best by the presence of a caretaker. \nAbandonment is a recurring theme in photographer Kip Scott’s work\, whether the disused factories of the West or the redundant institutions of Europe. In Shekhawati one feels a greater urgency to capture and preserve the past for fear it may disappear. \nFading frescoes adorning walls capture the spirit and humour of artists and original owners\, and the sense of a time of great wealth when the arts were patronised. The ghosts of the past are never far away even in images of silence\, of erosion and decay. For the past is never the past.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de19b4c-e102″][vc_column_text]Kip Scott is a Melbourne based photographer and video artist. Even the most rigid of materials\, including steel and ceramics\, reveal almost infinite flexibility of design. \nEach object features intricate geometric patterns or sinuous curves; each has its own seemingly dynamic nature.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de1d37f-3fec”][vc_column_text]Known for her future forward approach to design\, Sarah Ceravolo has embraced computational design processes and fabrication methods in order to produce optimal and dynamic functional form. His work walks the line between high and low brow\, graphic and fine\, abstract and cartoon\, jazz and pop. \n“That is my thing\, and from this I have learned something of myself.” \nRaglus is not particularly concerned with ‘genres’ either in music or art; his work is not confined to a movement or group. Raglus refers to his art practice as abstract cartoon or pop art. \nThere is always a correlation between Raglus’ music and art. In 2014\, with his partner in life and art Vicki Philipp and their musical project Victoriana Gaye\, Raglus toured and played music in the UK\, Scotland\, Copenhagen\, Germany\, Holland and France. They checked out every art gallery they came across. He did no art for four months\, just played music\, and looked. \nOn their return to Australia\, Raglus decided to exhibit again\, and has been painting since then\, towards this show at fortyfivedownstairs. At the same time\, Raglus and Philipp have toured around Australia a few times. \nTravelling on the back roads and through small country towns was particularly inspiring visually. They regularly play in Melbourne\, and a lot of the work in this exhibition is based on Melbourne as seen by an outsider arriving or leaving from the West. \n“Looking back to a time when I played with Fitzroy band The Bachelors from Prague\, record company executives often said\, ‘You are too rock for jazz\, and too jazz for rock’. I often feel that way – in between the buttons.” \nHalf jazz – half pop. \nview online at jeffraglus.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de102fa-b103″][vc_column_text]Jeff Raglus is one of a unique group of contemporary artists who divide their practice equally between music and the visual arts. Encompassing all that is pop\, Jeff’s work constantly blurs the boundaries between fine and graphic art. \nJeff is a multi instrumental musician\, who has toured overseas and around Australia many times with various ensembles.\, including The Eskalaters\, The Nicest People\, The Black Sorrows\, The Bachelors from Prague\, The Feeling Groovies and The Beachniks. He also plays with the Rebecca Barnard Band\, Victoriana Gaye and the Ross McLennan Orchestra. \nStarting off his art career in the seventies airbrushing surfboards\, he has screen printed fabrics\, T shirts and posters\, made clothes\, stage sets\, designed CD and record covers and helped make video clips. \nHe has worked for Mambo\, Swatch\, Ansett Airlines and The Arena Theatre Company. \nJeff has written and illustrated numerous children’s books\, two of which have been published overseas\, he has also worked as an animator. \nEven though Jeff moves around in many mediums and genres\, including sculpture and Screen printing\, he sees himself primarily as a painter and a musician. He has at least one solo and one group exhibition every year\, and is involved in several ongoing musical projects. \nIn 2008 he released his first solo album Bellatrix. His band Fogg were chosen to perform at the Sapporo Jazz Festival in Japan in 2009. \nFor the last 3 years he has been writing\, recording and touring with his partner in life and art Vicki Philipp and their musical project Victoriana Gaye. \njeffraglus.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
