I’m deeply curious about the distinction between the exterior and interior self (or the private and the public self) and the consequent mapping of our own body’s boundaries – the way in which the formless matter of the female psyche has to be contained within these boundaries\, conventions and poses. Through my exploration into these ideas I hope to create a visual language that speaks to and of the female experience and the continual search for the meaning and possibilities of personal identity\, whilst always posing the question – what defines an autonomous and absolute woman when the surface of her body has become her frame\, her armour? \nThe abstracted works Darker Places aim not to transcribe\, but rather imply\, a feeling of of the feminine and all that this carries with it: strength\, motherhood\, fragility\, sexuality\, burden and beauty. I’ve studied the female silhouette as a solidified whole – reworking and reducing the body to its most essential form in order to heighten it’s expressive power\, ultimately hoping to break the body out of it’s framing contours\, and instead creating new\, unapologetic boundaries. \nThe process of reduction plays an essential part in the creation of this new series of artworks\, subtracting detail and simplifying forms to create highly abstracted artworks that although streamlined still hope to achieve a sense of expression and vitality. It is as much about the lines that I choose to paint as it is about the lines I choose to leave out\, with simplification of form being at the core of this.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9efcee8-1cd1″][vc_column_text]Caroline Walls\nb. 1984\, Auckland NZ \nMelbourne-based Caroline Walls is a contemporary New Zealand-born artist working across a number of media\, including painting\, drawing\, sculpture and print-making. Walls draws inspiration from the movement and fluidity of the female form\, moments of intimacy\, contemporary perceptions of women’s sexuality in the current cultural sphere\, as well as notions of gender and fertility. Born in 1984 in Auckland\, New Zealand she has studied at Swinburne University of Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts. She has spent extensive time living abroad in London and New York before returning to Australia to continue her art practice. \nKeenly interested in the construction and complexity of the female identity\, and the distinction between the private and the public self\, which are key themes of the work she produces\, her artistic practice is grounded in a sensitive use of colour and a deep understanding of composition and form. Caroline’s reductive paintings are stripped back to the most essential line and shape to heighten the expressive power of each artwork. There is obvious intention behind the lithe colour scheme of her paintings\, which resonate with fleshy\, natural milk and oak tones of the skin. \nCaroline has previously had three solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney\, Australia and has also exhibited in a number of group shows including the AFF in New York City\, Platform\, Los Angeles and the The Other Art Fair. Darker Places will be her fourth solo exhibition to date\, opening in August 2018 at fortyfivedownstairs on Flinders Lane in Melbourne\, Australia.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The exploration of these memories coupled with day-to-day happenings has brought an expressive freedom to Ali’s work. Using flora and fauna as a catalyst\, this fresh perspective has seen her creating a personal iconography through the use of oil paint. \nAlways returning to pure expression through line\, Ali finds figurative shape and definition through negative spaces\, conveying a strong sense of motion and urgency in every movement. This results in a loose mapping of Ali’s past and present. \nWorking to a large scale\, Ali’s process is intuitive and fast paced. Drawing on a distinctive colour palette\, she weaves memory and line over controlled layers of paint. Gaining inspiration from the characteristics of the oil\, the artist is anything but sparing. Manipulating the medium to suit her expressive style\, she relishes in the artistic process\, drawing on every characteristic of the paint. \nAli describes her artistic process as an author writing a book. \n“I always feel as if I am working on the edge of something\, with my sole aim being to give life to the painting. The painting takes me where it wants to go” [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b31dcb-e5de”][vc_column_text]Predominantly influenced by her love of landscapes and brave colour combinations\, British born Ali McNabney-Stevens has quickly become one of the most collectible emerging artists within Australia\, whilst simultaneously attracting worldwide attention for her art practice. \nHaving earned her Honours degree in Design and History of Art from Edinburgh College of Art\, with further fine art studies at London’s prestigious St Martin’s\, Ali consistently displays her pedigree with an impressive body of original and limited edition abstract works that demonstrate versatility and individuality. \nAs a feature artist in many leading interior editorial spreads\, international blogs\, and of late regular guest appearances on primetime National TVC – it is fair to say that Ali continues to make her mark on the art world\, whilst working on new and exciting collaborations with other well-known creatives.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The line indicates the location and the extent of an object and often—albeit by symbolic representation—what that object is. The line seen in these paintings performs a different function. Lines are liberated from materiality\, though admittedly still constrained within an orthogonal grid. Unlike a vector with two defined points located in Cartesian space\, the lines of colour have no particular beginning or end. The vertical line is occasionally cut or overlayed by an invisible or visible horizontal element.  Some solid elements are sliced into thin fragments of colour\, revealing ambiguously negative or positive remnant stripes. Unlike the intended flatness of a colour field painting\, lines or their fragments become ‘figure’ to a spatially located ‘ground’. There is an incidental perspectival recession that occurs when a strip of colour floats over or intersects the colour in the background. \nThe lines are a vehicle by which the artist explores the strong and weak forces of each colour or hue. A subjective decision responds to adjacent colours and whether harmony or discord is the response to the enforced co-existence. \nThe ‘lines’ paintings have no intended viewpoint and could be segmented into many small compositions. Many small phrases repeat\, creating a dimension of time. Here the intention is more meditative than narrative. \nOther works adopt a different approach to colour. The relationship attempted is more kinetic. Coloured elements run\, jump or float along horizontal planes. \nThe organisation is in fields of coloured bands varying in hue and intensity. In some works\, the linear elements are actual separate canvases jammed together implying the potential slippage or fracturing along a horizon.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1451285630325-09def419-bb74b1db-6de15fd4-0563″][vc_column_text]Retiring after a few decades as a practising architect\, Andrew Scollo has returned to his first interest: making art. He initially graduated from art school in the early seventies majoring in sculpture. During the last few years he began exploring ideas and speculations about painting\, producing small works on paper.  Despite the many and recent pronouncements of the death of painting\, he extended this experimentation to paint on canvas. This resulted in the work for the current and his first solo exhibition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The inspiration for his current body of work emerges from time spent observing the ever-changing\, dramatic landscapes of the Mutawintji National Park. \nOf his practice David Hirst writes “Art attempts to trap an emotion or a memory so the feeling can be shared with others. My practice explores emotional events that I experienced during my travels in life and as a research scientist. I seek the parallels between both fields\, ultimately striving to present an observation for contemplation.” \nThe success of Hirst’s career as a research scientist was spurred on by his active\, hands-on experimental work\, and this approach is clearly evident in his approach to art-making which demonstrates a vibrant and dynamic quality.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
