For example\, in the discolourations of a burnt slice of toast\, one might see the face of the Messiah. Or perhaps the image of Vladimir Putin in the soapy scum of a shower curtain. After finding some obscure images of an elephant and alien figure\, the artist gave up staring at the road… it was quite dangerous too and so he turned to a more fleet-footed graphical approach. \nThese graphics from the tarmac have been enhanced and the colours have been accentuated to a strident surrealism. Hong Kong\, Paris\, Tokyo\, London\, Rome\, New York\, Melbourne and Sydney and one photograph from Cairns Airport! \nMike Reed presents to you\, not so much “forty miles of bad road” but graphical and colourful sections of road on the gallery wall and much more in an exclusive innovative book\, certainly a desirable collectors edition. \nThe artist will also display in the smaller gallery a collection of his street photography in a salon style showing Recently Mike’s work was selected by the Editor of Life Framers in their ‘Street Life’ theme\, commenting on the “humourous visual narrative that Mike conjures through sharp timing and a clean composition”. \nTo view the complete catalogue\, please click here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-09339c42-5cd9″][vc_column_text]\nIt is hard for friends and colleges to understand Mike Reed in any way other than what he did day in day out … and nights too. \nHe has been film editing for 42 years\, yet photography has always afforded him his only private creative outlet for all those years. \nPhotography was portable\, instantaneous and satisfying in his short breaks from the screaming schedules (editing and running the business was soaking up his concentration 60-100 hours a week). \nHis camera was always there as he roamed his backyard and afar\, eyes alert for something that would catch his attention. \nHe’s always been a hoarder\, all things rusty\, crusty and novel. Photography is a further collection of moments. Quirky and delicious. \nEditing trained his eye to detail\, decision and dialogue. Culture\, creativity and cooking are also amongst his other pursuits. \nSo now retired from the maddening advertising affray\, he is armed with his cameras and visual diary passionately pursuing his love of the world around him. \nmikereedphotography.com\n@mikereedphoto[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Programming” tab_id=”1651128036895-b6d7a1ed-4755″][vc_column_text]Artist Floor Talk: Saturday 7th May 12pm – 1pm \nPlease join Mike Reed as he shares stories about his artistic journey and how and why he made the photographic series Road Works. \nFind out more about this graphic work from the tarmac that has been enhanced\, with colours that have been accentuated to a strident surrealism. Many never seen or exhibited before but all showcasing Winn’s highly unique\, powerful approach to monotypes. \nBeautiful\, powerful images of nudes evoking a raw sensitivity created both here and in New York will adorn the walls of the small gallery\, while images of dancers’ leap across the walls of the large space at fortyfivedownstairs. \nWinn’s introduction the world of dance in New York in 2007 was fortuitous. Inspired by the NYC Ballet’s Artistic Director describing the aesthetic of his dancers as being like Michelangelo’s sculptures resonated with the artist. \nWinn became immersed into the world of dance and the joy of creating artwork inspired by dance and dancers. Her artwork is saturated with light and movement. \n“With dramatic lighting and beautiful\, strong\, muscular\, lithe\, expressive bodies\, moving with passion and emotion\, it seems so obvious that dance would be a focus for my artwork” \nWinn’s dancers and nudes are not depicted in the way one might traditionally imagine\, but rather in a dynamic\, contemporary combination of expressive abstraction with realism. Winn has created this effect by layering colours onto a copper sheet and then wiping away the etching ink to reveal light and form bringing to life a sculptural and fully modelled figure. \n“With the strong element of chance\, the abstraction of marks and the unusual textures able to be created with rich etching inks\, monotype making is a technique hard to beat\,” says Winn. \nWinn’s most recent artwork is created from in-situ drawings and photographs made during rehearsals of Alice Topp’s Logos. This was one of The Australian Ballet’s last performances prior to COVID-19\, cancelled after Opening Night. The artwork captures the raw power and beauty of the performance. \nVisitors to fortyfivedownstairs can expect a transformation into the world of dance as they enter the warehouse-style space. With its wooden floors\, high ceiling and beautiful light\, it makes the perfect backdrop for Winn’s images. Much like the performances that inspire her\, Winn’s works are filled with great emotive energy. \nCurated by Mary Tokatlidis. \nTo view the complete catalogue\, please visit here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Programming” tab_id=”1646364239586-300988ed-a817″][vc_column_text]Programming \nOpening Night: Tuesday 29th March 6-8pm \nYou are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the opening of ‘Light’\, an exhibition consolidating over sixteen years of artwork inspired by life models and dance companies from New York to The Australian Ballet. \nThis evocative and exciting exhibition brings together artworks from across all periods of Debra Winn’s career. To prove to him that life is full of worth his classmates make a ‘pile of meaning’ and sacrifice things of great importance; Dungeons & Dragons books\, a fishing rod\, a pair of green sandals\, a pet hamster…  Then\, events start to take a morbid twist as each offering becomes more extreme. And what if\, after all these sacrifices\, the pile still isn’t meaningful enough to bring Pierre Anthon down? \nThe Australian premiere of this internationally acclaimed Danish novel is adapted by Fleur Murphy\, directed by Alonso Pineda and stars a lively ensemble cast including Connor James\, Rebecca Makar\, Jessica Martin\, Eddie Pattison and Laurence Young.  Traversing the innocence of youth and the wisdom adulthood\, NOTHING is a delicious delve into existential angst\, full of wry humour and engaging characters that highlight the weird and wonderful things we all find worth in. \n‘Janne Teller has with NOTHING written a novel that is as haunting as it is brilliant.’ El Tiempo\, Colombia \n‘This beautiful and frightening book stopped me in my tracks.’ David Almond\, The Guardian\, UK[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ee08-4171″][vc_column_text]Featuring Connor James\, Rebecca Makar\, Jessica Martin\, Eddie Pattison & Laurence Young \nWritten by Fleur Murphy \nDirected by Alonso Pineda \nAssistant Direction by Karla Livingstone-Pardy \nMovement Supervision by Cassandra Gray \nStage Management by Annie Gleisner \nCostume and Set Design by Karine Larché \nLighting Design by Harrie Hogan \nMusic Composition and Sound Design by Sam Porter \nMusic Advisor Lara Dawson \nSet Building by Madelline Hillam \nProduced by Ryan Stewart[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ee08-4171″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $30\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 8+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \n  \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Faces of the homeless are far away\, seen as objects. They have been there so long they’ve become invisible. Now there is an emerging group who live where they can; elderly women who use cars\, couch surfing\, house sitting or cheap and dangerous boarding houses for shelter. They are the fastest growing group of people in crises and are largely hidden. Many have never imagined they would become homeless\, buffeted by their environment and hidden behind structures that limit their choices economically\, socially and politically. These women face an uncertain future\, having no security\, assets or savings. All suffer from a profound loneliness that leaves them intimidated and with a feeling of hopelessness. \nHowever\, amongst the women artist Dorothy Lipmann met as a volunteer at Wintringham\, a Melbourne not-for-profit organisation that cares for the elderly homeless\, there is a quiet determination and freedom from convention reflected in their clothing and bearing. It is this sense of flux\, change and turbulence compounded by their diverse circumstances\, vulnerability\, inequality as well as their resilience that Lipmann chose to explore and depict. Their suffering deserves empathy and compassion. \nLipmann’s paintings are intuitive expressions of people she has known. Rather than paint realistically\, she emphasises the psychology of the subject without reverting to caricature. The subject is as much about the situation as the person in it. Close-ups are used to show the genuinely funny\, chaotic and extreme behaviours used in order “to belong”. \nCombining figurative and abstract elements to create movement and an atmosphere of unease\, Lipmann has “put it straight down as dreaming\, not narrative”. While it must be convincing\, the most interesting thing about a painting is the intangible; a sense of mystery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933908a-b636″][vc_column_text]Dorothy Lipmann is a Melbourne based painter who has exhibited regularly since 1987. The first work was created on the 10th of August 2020 with the last work being completed one year later on the same day. Each work is dated and signed on the back side with a select few that are signed with gold leaf\, imitating a collectable playing card and being deemed as a “special edition”. \nBraden Howard created these intuitive mixed media works through the influences of movies and television\, video games\, current events\, childhood memories and other artists. These works share many varying themes between them and act as a mental mapping of the year\, with many works being directly influenced by the day in which they were made. Some pertain to themes of particular political or social events that occurred on that specific day. Elements of war\, destruction\, mental health\, evil\, creation and religion spread throughout the large series with the use of humour and absurdism also finding its way into the mix. \nEach work ties into Howard’s broader artist practice\, building upon his personal mythology; telling stories of beings\, creatures and other worlds. Influenced heavily by science fiction and fantasy\, a large majority of the works contain alien-like beings\, characters with otherworldly powers and cult-like groups on the ultimate search for knowledge and power. With an addition to these mythological travellers\, the series of works also contain experimental explorations of mediums and drawing games. \nCollaborations with other artists\, imitations of artists Howard is inspired by\, and surreal exquisite corpses also find their way into these works as he continues to learn through the process of creating. With a heavy use of personal symbolism and experiences\, A Stream Of Consciousness: One Year Later invites you to find your own meanings and create your own stories behind each of the works.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933302c-213e”][vc_column_text]Braden Howard is a Melbourne based artist\, practicing in studio art. He originally grew up in the city of Wagga Wagga and moved to Melbourne in 2016 to study art. His current practice is heavily influenced by television and movies\, video games\, pop culture\, current events and childhood memories. He is deeply interested in fantasy worlds and mythologies\, working intuitively to create stories\, creatures and beings. In Hindsight 20-20: A Melburnian Perspective\, James Yuncken explores this question\, and the wider ramifications of Melbourne’s extended lockdown. The exhibition consists of just five works. \nIt is a Melburnian perspective on social and political climate in 2020\, both in Australia and with a view to the wider world. Simultaneously\, it’s a ‘compare and contrast’ with – some of John Brack’s 1950s paintings. \nIn Yuncken’s Collins St\, we look into the foyer at 356 Collins St\, just near where Brack used to meet up after work before going for a drink. There are few people inside. They wear masks: just one passer-by in the street. The foyer windows reflect the view of the street that is much like the one depicted in Brack’s painting. On the November afternoon the plane trees have burst into leaf. \nFrom this\, other John Brack paintings suggested themselves for re-visitation. \nGold Standard\, referring to Morrison’s swipes at Daniel Andrews by praising NSW\, substitutes Gladys Berejiklian and Scott Morrison for Brack’s Jockey and his Wife. The Telephone Box\, updated to Social Media\, substitutes Donald Trump for the lady with the curlers in her hair. His hypnotic effect on his supporters in the run-up and in the aftermath of the US election persists\, but somehow he is the lady with the curlers too. Hat Shop revisits Menswear\, two very different interiors and impressions. \nLastly\, Press Conferences\, the only work without link to John Brack\, documents the 120 days that Daniel Andrews stood and answered questions until the journalist had no more. One image from each of those 120 days\, it owes its genesis to Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. \nThe exhibition will be available to view in the gallery at fortyfivedownstairs\, as well as online here\, and through the artist’s website\, jamesyuncken.com.au. The exhibition will include public programming in the form of an artist’s talk and walkthrough. It is a new and exciting exhibition highlighting the abundance of textile artists in Victoria and showcasing the progressive art form of textiles including work that explores the relationship between textiles and other art disciplines. \nStitching Change takes shifts and changes as its theme\, in particular it is centred on the way in which practices have transformed during the COVID-19 pandemic. These shifts may be around changing attitudes\, the introduction of new materials and techniques\, along with the impact of innovative ideas and evolving technologies. \nThe exhibition will highlight and explore the emotive properties of textiles to generate\, communicate and preserve memories along with creating discourse for the future. It centres on the value of textiles in our lives and on the role of textiles in the process of recollecting past events\, telling stories\, recording experiences\, as well as the extent to which textiles can stimulate positive foresight. The exhibition enables participating artists to explore projects which manifest as transformations in their practice. \nStitching Change will be held at fortyfivedownstairs in Flinders Lane which has a rich history for textile production\, design and innovation. This exhibition aims to add to this history in the form of Contemporary Textile Art.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Naarm Textile Collective” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-09337d89-de6a”][vc_column_text]Naarm Textile Collective | Curator Biographies \nTamara Russell is a textile artist specialising in free machine embroidery\, hand stitching and mending. Her practice engages with the natural environment recreating the images and shapes in her embroidered works in both 2 and 3D form. Photos are the starting point as Tamara explores her subject matter directly onto fabric\, working with thread. In her work she is able to portray concerns around social issues including the environment\, climate change and the treatment of asylum seekers in Australia. She finds textiles to be a perfect medium for expressing her thoughts using both hand and machine stitching. Tamara’s work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom and Australia. \n“Working with found materials I find the joy is the unexpected uses that can be found for them. I love this unpredictability and enjoy the inventiveness necessary to transform them. The materials not only highlight a need to address the amount of waste we produce\, but also contributes to the story. I try to always use materials that are reclaimed\, things with a history that have been discarded and might otherwise end up in landfill.” \nAnna Taylor is a professional artist and educator. She works across various mediums including painting and sculpture. Anna’s work is held in public and private collections in Australia and internationally. \nShe is the creator of Home Sweet Home; a Memorial for the generations of families effected by the legacy of war. The on-going Memorial is a library of handmade books telling unique stories of the women and children effected. It is continuing until the end of 2018. \nAnna holds a BA (Fine Art) (with distinction)\, RMIT 2007\, and a Diploma of Visual Art\, CAE 2000. She has a Graduate Diploma in Community Development\, RMIT 1996\, and a Graduate Diploma in Education & Training from VU 1995.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The resulting works move the viewer into the orchestrated pattern of the chosen gesture or expression. \nMezzini collaborated with his performance artist subjects in terms of pose\, style and resulting shapes\, as well as utilising studio photography and drawings in the creation of these paintings. mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um is the result of this coherent theme and statement.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-09334f03-16b4″][vc_column_text]An engineer by trade\, John Mezzini has recently returned to painting after studying at the North Adelaide School of Arts over twenty years ago. After encouragement from friends and a renewed enjoyment of the process\, Mezzini began again. He first exhibited E lascia dir le genti  at fortyfivedownstairs in 2019. \nSince then\, Mezzini has participated in SWISSARTEXPO\, and was placed in the top 100 artworks of the fair. He has also shown work at Art Box Miami\, and was part of the group show Emerge at Brunwick Street Gallery\, both in 2019. Once a thriving species\, the Helmeted Honeyeater’s numbers plummeted to a low of 50 individuals due to the destruction of their habitat after colonisation.  A team of citizen conservationists at Yellingbo Reserve have worked with scientists for fifty years to bring the ‘HeHo’ numbers back up to 250\, but the bird is still critically endangered. Jane’s new work\, with text by acclaimed director and writer Theresa Borg\, tells the story of these birds\, their habitat\, the people who work to keep them alive\, and the rich indigenous backdrop to this narrative. \nThis work is perfectly paired with Ross Edwards’ vibrant saxophone concerto in a new arrangement for saxophone\, piano and percussion\, Full Moon Dances\, Here\, Ross Edwards depicts the universal Moon Goddess incarnate\, source of plant life and protector of the environment\, performing a series of ritual healing ceremonies.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1399c-e04f”][vc_column_text]\nTICKET PRICES:\nBe part of the limited live audience at the venue: \nFull price: $40 Music students: $25\nLivestream at home: $25 (Friday 16 July 7.30pm AEST) \n  \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Live Zoom Broadcast” tab_id=”1617942889645-d6a4702f-fbef”][vc_column_text]Recording\nIf you are unable to tune into the performance on the night\, please email us at communications@fortyfivedownstairs.com to let us know. The subject matter shifts from abstract and organic to landscape\, figurative and conceptual. \nRecurring themes move between microscopic scientific and biological environments towards overviews of constructed worlds\, while matter emerges from the immaterial\, governed by whatever cognitive state is present on the day\, in this current climate of stasis and uncontrollable flux.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933f371-18b1″][vc_column_text]Michael Wedd is a Melbourne-based visual artist\, primarily working as a painter. He has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally\, and is represented in collections worldwide including in Australia\, UK\, Italy\, Germany\, USA. \nCLICK HERE for CV[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Exhibition Essay by Dr. Christopher Heathcote” tab_id=”1626763141528-5263a6cf-7244″][vc_column_text]Real art is never poorly composed. Where curatorial talk often orbits around representing\, studio banter invariably fixes upon composing. Visiting Michael Wedd’s studio I am reminded how for painters this never-ending pursuit seems to guzzle their studio hours. Be prepared for a sermon on what dense issues are being signified if you ask a curator about contemporary painting or sculpture; but ask artists themselves what honestly absorbs their creative energies when working (the driven artists\, like Michael)\, and you will hear how they strive to stimulate the viewer visually. \nWedd’s latest work confronts this impulse. This extended suite of works was painted over the Melbourne ‘Lockdown’ of 2020. Those months in a drawn-out medical quarantine became for Wedd a deepening period of creative contemplation and sustained self-reflection. Turning his back upon isms and style trends while ignoring obligatory subjects and ‘correct’ political themes\, the artist set himself to enticing the inquisitive eye\, of stirring the seasoned imagination\, of composing afresh. \nHis process was basic. Concentrating on one piece at a time\, Wedd took a sheet of fine artist’s paper which he fixed to a watercolour board\, then he set to improvising with runny inks. He poured on black ink\, tilting the surface and allowing this dark medium to flood over the paper\, then working from each side he dripped on water to thin certain sections\, at points steering his ink into veins of marbled tone with fine brushes. This wasn’t done in one rushed session\, but slowly over days\, the paper being redampened so forms were worked further\, and touches of primary colours added. \nImprovisation was the guiding rule\, Wedd only ceasing to manipulate when satisfied a work was complete. Then he assigned a number to it (the sequence of the compositions is easily traced) and turned to the next piece. \nThis approach is indebted to the surrealists\, especially Max Ernst\, Paul Klee and Andre Masson—artists Wedd deeply values. In using their improvisational methods he did not intend to use free association to tap his unconscious\, being interested more in this as a means of creative play. Much of his conversation is about savouring the range of visual effects he can get with such basic pigments\, while how he allows the unfettered imagination to take flight. \nAfter a lifetime painting\, he tried to remove suggestions of purposeful control. There was no tinkering to insert images\, or impose suggestions of structure\, least of all to resort to tidy order. Linear grids or shapes were not layered on top. The work had to sit on the edge of formlessness\, stirring the viewer’s mind with a relentless and niggling ambiguity. \nChatting in his studio\, Wedd insists he has no weighty message to press\, and rejects political meanings. Instead by their very fluid nature he wants his abstractions more to suggest those tiny protoplasmic forms that underpin life. Pointing to certain works\, he tells me how with them he especially wants to evoke that miniature world of our internal biology\, an intricate myriad of tiny organisms and essential bacteria and delicate membranes and cell clusters and enzyme threads all within us\, such intricate inner multitudes which are revealed via electron microscopes. \nAs he talks of these things\, I am thinking how—as a virus threatens—it appears Michael Wedd has quite unconsciously taken our vulnerable human biology at his subtle theme. ‘We don’t catch hold of an idea\,’ the poet Heine once said\, ‘rather the idea catches hold of us.’ These works are surely exemplars of that artistic truth. In withdrawing from that hurdy-gurdy media chatter about viral contagions\, trying to escape a spreading public hysteria\, Wedd’s imagination has circled right around and indirectly confronted the wondrous mysteries of the human organism. \n—Christopher Heathcote[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”COVIDSafe venue information” tab_id=”1635900380923-6b8a8e47-6f82″][vc_column_text]welcome back to a COVIDSafe fortyfivedownstairs! \nThe following information is to keep you and our staff safe during your visit to fortyfivedownstairs. On the 90-day voyage from England\, a deadly typhus epidemic swept through her decks\, taking nearly 200 of her 800 Scots passengers. Forbidden to enter Melbourne\, the Ticonderoga’s passengers and crew were set down on a little beach inside the heads while the ship’s surgeon – assisted by a brave young Highland girl – did their best to heal and comfort. \nOne of the biggest stories of its day – now all but forgotten\, Michael Veitch plays the surgeon in later life recounting the dramatic saga. But Hell Ship is more than just a maritime tale – the surgeon was Michael’s own great-great grandfather\, and the young nurse his great-great grandmother. \nResonating powerfully with today’s world\, and accompanied by original music performed by Michael’s son Thomas Veitch\, Hell Ship is a story of hope\, love and survival. \nWritten & Performed by: Michael Veitch \nDirected by: Peter Houghton \nMusician: Thomas Veitch (cello)[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Bio.” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1595c-34dd”][vc_column_text]Michael Veitch \nPerformer\, writer and broadcaster\, Michael Veitch began his career during the heyday of 1980s Australian sketch comedy in such iconic shows as D-Generation and Fast Forward\, before progressing to stage performance and newspaper writing. Some of the stories remain set in ancient Greece\, while others provide a more modern context for the adaptation. \nLuccio has responded to these stories with a series of dramatic and gritty artworks. Using a variety of mediums\, he has created a suite of works that brings the text to life in a powerful and memorable way. \nInternationally recognised for his cityscapes\, Luccio has previously depicted stories by John Hughes in the beautiful book\, The Garden Of Sorrows\, described by some as the hardcover answer to digital storytelling with its art object construction and generously illustrated presentation. \nWith Tales from the Greek\, Luccio’s artworks are at once compelling and confronting. They invite instant reaction and attention. When charcoal is employed\, the images are filled with classical and sculptural chiaroscuro. But when etchings are the chosen medium\, the works are filled with the signature Luccio style of energetic mark making often described as honest\, direct and instantly recognisable. \nThese new works by Luccio will surprise and delight visitors to the show who will be greeted with a rich and powerful exhibition created by an artist who has always been interested in the classical world whilst remaining relevant and contemporary with his practice. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Marco Luccio & John Hughes” tab_id=”1632277520161-3387b06a-5b8e”][vc_column_text]John Hughes and Marco Luccio met while Luccio was an artist in residence at Sydney Grammar in 2010. Hughes\, the Head Librarian\, invited Luccio to collaborate on The Garden of Sorrows after seeing his artwork. Consequently\, they have collaborated again to produce the breathtaking Tales from the Greek. \nMarco Luccio is an award- winning artist whose work is represented in over 40 major public collections both nationally and internationally\, including the New York Public Library\, the Museum of the City of New York\, The Skyscraper Museum and the National Gallery of Australia. His exhibition history includes 50 major solo exhibitions\, and 170 group\, curated and award shows. He has also received many commissions. Luccio has also been shortlisted for many major awards\, including twice for the Dobell prize\, Australia’s most prestigious drawing prize\, and in 2013 for the Adelaide Perry Prize for drawing. A feature documentary about Marco Luccio is currently in production. \nJohn Hughes is the author of seven books. His first book\, The Idea of Home\, won the 2005 NSW Premier’s Award for Non-Fiction\, the 2006 National Biography Award\, and was the National Year of Reading ‘Our Story’ winner for NSW in 2012. His second book\, Someone Else: Fictional Essays\, won the Adelaide 2008 Festival Award for Innovation and the 2008 Queensland Premier’s Award for Short Stories. His third book\, The Remnants\, was published in 2012 by UWAP\, who also published The Garden of Sorrows in 2013\, Asylum in 2016\, and No One in 2019\, which was shortlisted for the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award. His latest novel\, The Dogs\, was published by Upswell in September.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1632277645070-839a9155-0139″][vc_column_text]TALES FROM THE GREEK\nMyth\, Beauty and Brutality \nOpening Event & Book Launch\nFriday 19 November\nDue to density limits\, there will be two sessions for the event: 5pm – 6.30pm & 7pm – 8.30pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential. I had worked with John last on The Garden of Sorrows\, which has had great critical acclaim. John’s words inspired so many ideas along the themes of love\, power\, war\, hate\, revenge and ambition\, together with a multitude of emotions. I love challenging myself to create new work and am constantly seeking ways to expand my artistic ability and creative scope. My hope for these works is that they not only resonate in a traditional way\, but also are seen as fresh and contemporary interpretations of Greek mythical imagery. To respond to words with such depth and layering was challenging and inspiring. John’s sentences seem to be so beautifully crafted and thought-out\, that each paragraph gave birth to countless possibilities. \nI started way back in 2016\, by reading the text and making small notes next to each story in the form of one or two words plus a thumbnail sketch. Each story required a great time in between to absorb\, so it was a time-consuming process. After the thumbnails next to the text\, I would do a storyboard in my sketchbook with captions. This gave me a good sense of the drama and flow of the images\, and helped make sure they were in order. \nFrom there I then hired both male and female models to pose in the scenes required\, from which I would then work up big charcoal drawings. After the charcoal drawings there came paintings\, monotypes and drypoints\, and later ink drawings  and collagraphs\, as well as an array of assemblages too. \nSome of the works are massive\, others small\, intimate portraits. Each medium allowed its own kind of effect and offered moods that are unique. The charcoals allowed for incredible chiaroscuro\, giving the images depth and dramatic light and dark. Perfect for some of the scenes where richness in mood and feeling were desired and conveyed in John’s rich text. The drypoints give the images gritty and powerful lines. They create an effect resonating energy and a visceral quality that is particular to the medium. The paintings allowed me to create a grander statement. The massive waterscape inspired by Icarus\, for example\, gave me the opportunity to paint water in an abstracted and physical manner using slates of wood to move the paint across the canvas. The images of the Trojan Horse seemed to demand a large scale\, so those were painted on 6ft canvasses. \nOne of my favourite stories to draw from was Sisyphus. What an amazing story\, and John’s take on it is so beautiful\, sad and at the same time filled with a philosophical complexity that is inspiring. Maybe during Covid times this story resonates the most as we all feel like we’re pushing our metaphorical rocks up and down the same hill. In fact\, I have deliberately omitted the rock that Sisyphus is pushing so that we all may place our own metaphorical obstacle in the space. \nI loved working on Achilles; the great battle scenes were thrilling to depict. It was such pleasure to draw the heroes Achilles\, Hector and Paris holding shields and wielding spears. And\, of course\, to draw the Trojan Horse that the soldiers hid in to surprise their hosts. \nAll the stories lend themselves so well to energetic mark making. I have chosen the splash of colour on a number of pages to evoke the colour of the old Greek vases\, but also to give a sense of ancient memory. A kind of earthy colour that feels old world whilst remaining complementary to the black and white images that are the main style in the book and in the exhibition itself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI chose the cover image because the horse to me represents civilisation. A horse can be very architectural. Without horses\, cities couldn’t be built in ancient civilisations. And of course\, most of all\, the Trojan Horse. The horse on the cover appears out of what could be seen as smoke after a fire…perhaps after the battle. \nSome of the stories are so breathtakingly beautiful the images poured out and the only question was how to limit myself and decide which were vital to the story. ‘Corruption’ was the first story. The hero trapped on an island with only his falcon companion\, which represented freedom and his rotting foot. This is where the idea came to me of looking at iconic religious painting where the head is tilted. I wanted these images to have the meaningful and layered appearance of a religious icon. Hence you will see in many of the stories the heads of the characters lean to one side in an exaggerated style\, which is highly visible in the woman and child in ‘Lady Macbeth of Tamarama Bay’\, as well as other stories in the book. \nI looked at artists such as Picasso and Rouault\, as well as years of studying what makes an image memorable and powerful. In addition\, I poured over my books on Ancient Greek myth\, as well as sketching the Greek and Roman artefacts in the New York Metropolitan Museum. I feel that this body of work is a combination of everything I have learnt in over thirty years of making art\, and that I needed that experience to be able to do justice to such powerful words. \nThe myth of Icarus and the story of the Minotaur was one story I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. How wonderful to depict this story so well-known yet told in a such a new and beautiful way. As an artist I salivated at the idea of drawing the wings of Icarus falling from the sky. To get my teeth into sketching how to make him fall dramatically\, I hired a model to pose upside down\, leaning against a wall to appear to be falling. And later\, with the model posed to appear squashed and broken. I used feathers I have collected over the years as inspiration\, along with looking at dead birds and classical renderings by Michelangelo and others of falling men. Also\, the prospect of creating my own version of the Minotaur after years of looking at Picasso was at once daunting and inspiring. I made many different versions and I’m proud of the one I have come up with. I hope that it has its own style born from me and the words of John. (Oh\, and the wooden cow in this story was a gift to me from the writer. I loved making her using drypoint to depict the hard nails hammered into slates of wood to create a visual effect filled with deep scratched marks whilst remaining somehow light in quality. The cow almost seems like the posters you might find in an old butcher shop showing the prime cutlets on the beast. With this story I went away for a couple of days to Daylesford and spent countless hours making the sketches in my hotel room. By the end of it\, the room was filled with drawings covering the bed and the floor\, and I went back home ready to turn those sketches into drypoints for the book.) \nThroughout the image making I would look for potential characters to use in the book. I also used some of the images I had made previous to the book coming into existence. I would draw the same poses over and over. For instance\, in ‘Corruption’ one of the characters listens whilst hiding. I photographed a friend posing with his hand near his ear. I kept refining it\, drawing it in ink\, charcoal and then finally with drypoint\, until it looked just right\, with a balance of light and dark\, whilst keeping a stark and graphic quality which I think works well with John’s writing. I found myself being innovative too\, exploring new methods I had not used before such as collagraphs. This is visible in the image of cracks in a wall in ‘Knots’\, where I used an old book cover that I painted glue over and then scratched and ripped away to create the appearance of cracks. They are really cracks in a way\, just like the leaves in the Icarus story are real leaves I pasted onto cardboard and printed over. Something about the materials being the real thing they are depicting is very appealing and new for me. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImages such as Electra cutting her hair on the grave in ‘Knots’ needed great thought and many reworkings to get exactly right. The words pushed me to create imagery that I would otherwise never make. Sometimes the characters in the stories turn wild\, hissing like cats or howling like wolves. Oh\, what fun and joy it was creating those\, pushing my model\, who wore various wigs and outfits\, to crawl around the floor and rise like a madwoman\, hissing and howling in the studio. I would often try to feel what the characters are feeling\, so the stories needed me to stay away for a while to fully absorb the nature of each character and what the images should convey. \nShowing time going backwards in ‘Riddle’ was an incredible challenge. I loved making the clocks seem warped and mangled\, and drawing the woman walking like a ghost. Men and women falling on swords was another beautiful challenge. Once again\, my model posed\, faking her death over and over in various configurations to help me depict the scene realistically and dramatically. \nThe challenge was to be creative whilst imagining everything to be true. I was glad to draw a dragon. That was a terrific experience\, as who wouldn’t want to draw a dragon? So much fun\, and the creature lends itself well to the medium of drypoint with its scales and claws. \nI myself posed for some of the images as reference too\, such as in ‘Lady Macbeth of Tamarama Bay’\, where the couple are mourning at the grave. The fortune teller too was a great one to draw. I had my model wear a crazy wig and black long-sleeved top\, and I drew countless versions to get to the one I selected that best showed the mood and character required from the text. \nMarionettes and puppets appear a few times in the book. I loved looking at classical ceramic versions\, as well as my own wooden art version as inspiration. The stories also mention vultures and wolves devouring bodies. This was again something I would not normally draw\, so it allowed me to push myself further in the scope of my image making. I must say I also found it exciting\, rewarding\, and just plain fun to draw some bloodthirsty and dramatic scenes. \nIn addition to all the images for the book\, the words have inspired many assemblages of men riding horses and metal Spartans made from found metal discards from my local railway line. The idea of old welded found metal artefacts lends itself well to the stories and again gave birth to new image-making approaches for me \nThis exhibition and book have been years in the making. It seems as if John’s stories and my ideas have lived in my mind for an age. I feel like Zeus giving birth to Athena: the images have now sprung to life from the fertile world of John’s words into my world of image making. I think that Tales from the Greek is something of a Magnus Opus for me personally. I hope readers find inspiration to delve further into the richness of Greek mythology. \nMarco Luccio \n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”COVIDSafe venue information” tab_id=”1635900835324-3bbb96c5-dd31″][vc_column_text]welcome back to a COVIDSafe fortyfivedownstairs! \nThe following information is to keep you and our staff safe during your visit to fortyfivedownstairs. The work moves between the surreal and absurd exploring universal human themes of memory and dreams\, their fragility\, transience and power. Like a dream itself\, White Day Dream recalls subconscious emotions\, where things are at once unexpectedly linked and disconnected. \n\n\n\n\n\nWeave Movement Theatre is an ambitious and diverse Melbourne-based hybrid dance and theatre performance company\, comprised of people with and without disabilities. The company formed in 1997 through an Arts Access Victoria project and continues today developing high quality performances. Weave Movement Theatre’s work subverts audience’s expectations\, and challenges conventional ways of seeing dance and disability. They present a distinctive and progressive model for inclusive dance performance. \n…wildly surreal visual theatre…. Killer clowns dissect concepts of individuality and difference as they search for the one victim that has eluded them. \nSet in an rickety abattoir-shack\, the Pigs are working hard on their latest obsession\, to rid the world of every last red nose clown. \nSpine tingling original theatre that is hilariously dark and frighteningly funny. \nJoin this underground clown cult that audiences have been raving about. \n“The Long Pigs is juvenile\, blasphemous and almost completely inexplicable. But it is probably the most engrossing and satisfying work of physical theatre I’ve seen in the better part of a decade: strange and terrific indeed”. The Australian \n“The Long Pigs is a dirty little masterpiece\, and it’ll change the way you think about clowning. It might even go some of the way to curing your fears.” Herald Sun \n  \nThe Long Pigs was performed at fortyfivedownstairs in 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f173cc-a3a6″][vc_column_text color=”#000000″]Devisors/Creators/Performers: Clare Bartholomew\, Derek Ives-Plunkett\, Nicci Wilks \nDevisor/Director: Susie Dee \nSet Design: Anna Tregloan \nSound Design: Jethro Woodward \nLighting Design: Andy Turner[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f173cc-a3a6″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\n  \nwatch at home: $20 \n  \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs]watch at home [vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A former Minister in the Hawke Government\, his interests are extraordinarily wide ranging\, and his deep love and encyclopaedic knowledge of poetry and music inspired us to hold a birthday celebration almost a decade ago. It was so enjoyable we’ve been doing it ever since. \nLast year we were devastated when it appeared impossible to hold the celebration due to the lockdown but streaming came to the rescue\, and instead of selling out all 120 seats\, the virtual audience numbers were estimated at more than 400 friends and admirers. \nThis year the breadth of his interests and friendships will be reflected in another fascinating online celebration with appearances from actor Jillian Murray to former PM Malcolm Turnbull\, cellist Zoe Knighton to Nobel laureate Peter Doherty and many more. \nPour a glass of something you enjoy\, cut a slice of cake\, and settle back to enjoy a unique event\, Barry Jones’ 89th birthday![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Event Access Details” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f151c9-0972″][vc_column_text]Your link to join the live Zoom broadcast will be sent via email from 24 hours before the start time of the event.
