The six members of the smallCHESTRA explore the meeting point between folk melody\, jazz harmony and textural improvisation through a series of compositions written by Melville that allow and encourage spontaneous interaction\, introductions and endings as soloists\, duos and trios. \nFeaturing Melbourne jazz veterans Ronny Ferella (drums)\, Tamara Murphy (bass)\, Robbie Melville (guitar)\, Gideon Brazil (tenor saxophone\, alto flute) and Flora Carbo (alto saxophone/bass clarinet)\, and classical cellist Zoe Knighton\, the smallCHESTRA creates a spectacular range of dynamic and timbral possibilities in a relatively small package\, and blurs the barriers between contemporary folk\, jazz and classical. \n“Think Frisellian-cowboy-quirkestra ambling along with a cup of tea in one hand and a stein of beer in t’other. As well as a recognised composer and bandleader he is an in demand sideman and very active in the Melbourne music community organising concerts\, workshops and opportunities for non mainstream music performances. \nAs a bandleader Ronny led and composed for the successful group IshIsh\, which released five CDs and toured extensively around Australia as well as performing in Europe at the prestigious Umbria Jazz Festival (Italy) and Pori Festival (Finland). More recently he has led the group Wayfinders  and performs in the cooperatively led and highly regarded groups Omelette\, Peon and I Hold The Lion’s Paw. For the last 21 years he has played in and co-managed the Michelle Nicolle Quartet\, in which time the band has released eight recordings and toured all around Australia and many major festivals in Europe and throughout Asia. He is a committee member of the Moreland City Band which provides rehearsal and performance space and tutoring for over 14 bands and music organisations as well as presenting concerts for emerging artists. \nHis most recent project is the volunteer organisation\, small space music which aims to bring together curious listeners and small non mainstream music venues in Melbourne and regional Victoria. He is currently working with the venues The Brunswick Green and Cross Street where he helps to book young up and coming bands and artists to perform side by side with more established artists. \nIshIsh are an Australian musical phenomenon. Their conception is at once unashamedly accessible and highly challenging\, while each individual player is a true virtuoso. While transcendental looseness and abandon abounds\, impeccably tight ensemble and intonation is available when this too is required. Precious few groups can do both these things and produce music so simultaneously fascinating and moving. It is music for the head\, heart and feet…” – Mark Isaac Music Forum\n \n  \nZOE KNIGHTON \nAfter starting cello at the age of nine with Jill Kahans\, and graduating from the University of Melbourne with the highest mark of her year\, Zoe went on to establish herself as one of the country’s most sought after cellists. Having studied with Christian Wojtowicz\, Michel Strauss (Paris) Nelson Cooke\, and Angela Seargeant\, she is now in demand as chamber coach and teacher at various institutions. A regular panelist for major competitions\, Zoe combines many facets of her career with performing. \nZoe has played numerous concertos with Melbourne Orchestras and with pianist Amir Farid\, made an impressive debut at the Melbourne Recital Centre to great critical acclaim in 2009. Their partnership has resulted in recordings for ABC\, concerts throughout Australia and the release of five CDs on the MOVE label. Zoe and Amir will reunite in 2020 with performances in New York and throughout Australia. \nZoe has been praised for her “thrilling tenor sound” (Limelight Magazine)\, “sublime phrasing” and “many great technical demands carried off with ease.” She has released three other titles on the MOVE label\, including the complete suites for solo cello by J.S Bach. \nZoe is a founding member of Flinders Quartet and plays a 2020 Rainer Beilharz cello made in Castlemaine\, Victoria\, and a Michael Taylor bow made in 2012. Zoe has been following Rainer’s cello making for a number of years. After falling in love with the deep\, characterful sound and choosing to make this cello her own\, Rainer revealed that he had made it with her in mind. \n“Knighton has produced a reading of great artistic integrity.” – Gordon Kerry \n“She radiates confidence in her work and participates with personality and no little finesse … Well worth hearing for the pleasure given through this player’s familiar warmth and honesty of musical character.” – Clive O’Connell \n  \nROBBIE MELVILLE is a guitarist and composer. He began performing in his teens\, and in 2005 was offered the Principal Guitar Chair in the Australian Pops Orchestra\, appearing at Hamer Hall and the Sydney Opera House with artists such as James Morrison\, Marina Prior\, and Guy Sebastian. \nMelville’s compositions have garnered several awards. Most recently he became a recipient of the 2021 Johnny Dennis Music Award. In 2016 he was awarded both the Industry and Orkeztra prizes in the Composition Competition for world music ensemble Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde with the piece ‘Tango In Pusan’. He was awarded first place for ‘Junkyard’ in the Instrumental Category of the 2018 International Songwriting Competition\, a competition that amassed over 19\,000 entries. The same song was shortlisted for the 2021 Composition-To-Choreography Competition “MadeBy”\, an initiative of OneMusic Australia and the Australian arm of the Royal Academy of Dance. \nIn 2007 his quintet cleverhorse independently released the album ‘Goodnight\, Mr. Monster’ featuring an eclectic range of Robbie’s compositions. The Sydney Morning Herald wrote\, “They are onto something. They are undoubtedly creative”. Their second album ’50:fifty’ was released on the prestigious Jazzhead label in 2016. \nMelvilles’s trio Antelodic released its debut album ‘Quiet Sufficient’ in 2017. Billy Pinnell wrote\, “Antelodic…have created a sonically daring\, accessible masterpiece”. 2019 found the trio road testing new material during a series of shows in London in preparation for their next record. \nIn March 2020 this new material was released as the album\, ‘To Iceland! To Iceland!’ on ABC Jazz. Award winning Australian saxophonist Julien Wilson wrote\, “Melville’s compositions are beguiling\, but it’s the way they’re realised by the whole group that makes this recording so special. There’s plenty of intrigue\, but always room to breathe”. The album was supported by a national Australian tour. \nRobbie’s propensity for musical variety\, and sensitivity as an accompanist\, has seen him engage in a diverse number of collaborative enterprises. He has worked on recordings for artists such as Shane Howard\, John Murry and Liz Frencham\, toured internationally with Irish musicians Mundy and Roesy\, performed with harpist/singer Mary Doumany\, Krystle Warren\, Nat Bartsch\, Gallie\, Aine Tyrrell\, Carl Pannuzzo\, Stephen Magnusson\, Zoe Frater\, Kristina Olsen\, and Sarah Carroll. \nHe has composed and recorded music for The Australian Diamond Company\, the Chinese/American short film\, ‘Hidden Truths’\, and the British documentary ‘Genus’. His combined interest in improvisation and silent film led him to form the Easy Street Ensemble\, a stable of rotating musicians who improvise live soundtracks to silent films. \nHe currently works as the in-house guitarist and musical arranger for Mark Stanley’s Red Room Recording Studio\, teaches guitar\, and performs regularly with Antelodic\, his new sextet the smallCHESTRA\, and with his trio and solo projects. \nWhile subtly evading expectations\, Robbie Melville loads his music with a restrained melancholy conveying innocence rather than knowingness\, the upshot being an unusual emotional ambiguity blending resignation and contentment – John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald 2021) \nRobbie’s style of minimalistic jazz is unique and distinctive\, perfectly phrased and placed\, but remains unpredictable – Indigo Music  \n  \nTAMARA MURPHY is a bassist/composer/educator based in Melbourne\, Australia. She has been flat out for over 20 years\, leading her own bands and performing with countless others. \nShe has released 10 albums as leader (or co-leader) and appears on over 30 recordings by other artists. She’s toured all around the world\, performing in Japan\, China\, Europe\, the UK and New York as well as Australia. \nCurrently\, Tamara Murphy performs with Kate Miller-Heidke\, Ali McGregor\, Harry Angus\, Clio Renner\, Andrea Keller\, Nat Bartsch\, Paul Grabowsky and Stephen Magnusson and many more artists in addition to her own band\, Spirograph Studies. \nShe ran her quintet Murphy’s Law for 14 years\, releasing four albums and was a member of Keller-Murphy-Browne (with Andrea Keller and Allan Browne)\, releasing two albums. She also performs and composes for other projects. Her albums have been nominated for The Age Genre Music Awards\, AIR awards and The Bell Awards. \nMurphy was awarded the inaugural PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission in 2011 and her compositions have appeared on albums by other artists\, including vocalist Elly Hoyt\, ATM15 Big Band\, pianist Tony Gould and saxophonist Rob Burke. In the last few years\, she has worked as a musical director and arranger for the Brunswick Music Festival and Monash University’s MLIVE Progress Festival. In 2019\, she was shortlisted for the National Live Music Awards (Best Jazz Act). \nIn 2019 her band\, Spirograph Studies\, toured around Australia and New Zealand to support the release of their debut album\, Kindness Not Courtesy (shortlisted for a Music Vic Award). Their second album Lowlights was released in October 2021. \nIn the lockdown of 2020\, Tamara Murphy started an interview series entitled ‘Flipped Interviews’. This fun series of interviews features male musicians being asked questions previously given to female musicians. It’s a cheeky\, yet inclusive way to highlight the different ways men and women are treated in our industry. Previous interviewees include Paul Grabowsky\, Harry James Angus and Scott Tinker.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1feca-7ce4″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $35\nConcession: $25\nGroup 8+: $25 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Yet\, as it grows\, it escapes containment\, and the trace of the textiles is exposed\, showing what it was before\, and the new life that mycelium brings to the waste. In “Experiment 2”\, 128 small mycelium discs are placed together and allowed to grow into one another. Through repetition\, the mycelium discs start to resemble a tapestry. Although grown in exactly the same conditions\, the unpredictable nature of the living material produces variations in colour and visual texture. “Experiment 3” introduces charcoal to the mycelium. The colour and wood grain of the charcoal provide a counterpoint to the rhizomatic growth of the mycelium. Out of the burnt\, inert and lifeless charcoal\, new life emerges. \nMycelium grows on cellulose substrates\, such as banana\, wood\, cotton and paper. For the three experiments\, mycelium was grown on rice husks\, woodchips\, discarded textiles and charcoal – biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Unlike industrially processed materials such as timber\, steel and plastics\, a living material such as mycelium is unpredictable and hard to control. Mycelium is sensitive to its surrounding temperature\, humidity\, and light. \nThe materials and processes we use to make our buildings and objects contribute to environmental degradation. In order to address this\, together with technologists\, architects and designers are working with biomaterials\, such as microorganisms\, to replace traditional materials such as plastics\, leathers\, bricks\, and concretes. Mycelium is playing a central role in a shift away from materials that are extracted toward materials that are grown. \nThe work was a part of a commissioned project by KFive\, a local furniture company\, to Monash University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The exhibition features an eclectic mix of art created by the artist over the past five years. The vast body of work explores historic events\, personal experiences and the human condition narrated to us by the media and other central bodies. \nThe main feature of this exhibition is Fink’s most recent body of work titled: Perspective. This mixed media series looks at the way in which society lives under the power and influence of the various media outlets\, whose published material has decidedly far-reaching effects on how we think\, look and feel. The text used in this series is derived from real news headlines from a variety of news outlets\, text that is written in such a way to invoke strong emotional responses in the reader. Fink has reimagined and reworked the text to be less specific to a particular topic\, but instead to subjects that affect society as a whole. \nThe backgrounds are a unique style of photography\, created through the camera lens. The text is layered onto each photograph using acrylic paint and stencils. The series comprises 10 100.0 x 120.0 cm di-bond mounted mixed media archival images\, each ready to hang and add a touch of artistic expression to any lounge or dining room. \nOther works in the exhibition showcase Fink’s attention to detail with his use of several mediums\, including photography\, paint\, resin and timber.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Rory Fink Artist\nrory@roryfink.com\nEducation\n– 2000 – 2002 completed a Bachelor of Arts\, RMIT university\, Melbourne.\nAwards / Achievements\n– 2009 Guest Judge for competition aired on GO! His delicate and ethereal compositions reveal a preoccupation with surfaces\, layers and light. \nCrawling Through the Dust of Life is an exhibition of new work comprised of mixed media works on paper and a group of large-scale works on canvas.  This series has developed from an ongoing body of work in which abstract compositions are derived from natural forms and patterns. Rich surfaces are built through layers of texture and glaze. The final image emerges from a reductive process in which layers are stripped back with a palette knife. With densely textured surfaces creating movement and space\, the work is suspended somewhere between the metaphysical and material. While referring to the natural world the images ultimately evoke otherworldliness and suggest an internal process of revelation. \nThe exhibition features a large diptych\, the same dimensions (200.0 x 600.0 cm) as Claude Monet’s Water Lily Pond on permanent display at the beautiful Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima Island\, Japan. It was a photo of this gallery\, with visitors dwarfed by the Monet diptych\, which provided the idea to embark on a work of this scale. The work took two years to complete\, the first year to build up layers of oil colour and second for the painstaking process of scratching back the hardened oil paint. \nThe works on paper have developed over a 10 year period. Earlier versions were exhibited in 2012\, at which time they were principally watercolour\, but have since been entirely reworked by applying multiple layers of raw pigment and acrylic. The fresh layers have been stripped back revealing a ‘ghost’ of the underpainting through the distressed upper surface.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]Richard Besley \nBorn Melbourne 1971\nCurrently lives and works in Melbourne \nSolo Exhibitions\n2015 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2012 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2010 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2006 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2006 Gallerie Arcturus\, Paris\n2004 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2002 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne\n2001 The Motor Works\, Melbourne\n2000 The Motor Works\, Melbourne\n1997 The Motor Works Melbourne[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Thus was born the first Salon des Refusés and the seed of Impressionism was planted. Using 5 famous paintings as focal points\, this program explores French poetry and music inspired by them through songs by Debussy\, Fauré\, Duparc and duets by Chausson. I think with being somewhat cloistered and remaining housebound and often losing any sense of time’s progress or the world beyond my designated perimeter\, my work became more complex. The vision was more myopic\, focused more intense\, l hope not to the point of neurosis\, but as time seemed limitless there was a slowness to the pace of my work. A sense that I could quietly explore\, avoid the virus and with no distractions\, the work often became an elaboration on an elaboration. Jewellery inside jewellery. \nMy exhibition held here in the small gallery at fortyfivedownstairs in 2016 called The Decorated Self contained similar themes\, my retort to minimalism and it’s structures. I wanted to pay my respects to Decoration. Decoration and detail are cousins and they both allow the eye to travel which is what the eye seeks. \nKate Durham[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kate Durham is a Melbourne artist\, practicing in jewellery\, painting\, decorative art\, interiors\, sculpture and drawing. In June 2002\, she travelled to Nauru with a BBC journalist and thus provided the first images of Australia’s Pacific Solution. \nIn the 1980’s Kate made popular her extravagant\, bejewelled jewellery\, head-pieces\, drawings\, paintings\, sculptures\, busts\, mirrors\, frames and furniture. Kate’s choice of materials from scraps\, remnants\, and rubbish informed her playful and unique anti-fashion\, fashion style. \nKate was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council (FDC) of Australia. They roam\, wander\, twist\nand turn. Starting with random mark marking\, they take on a momentum of their own until\nsemblances of images emerge. I use techniques as starting points to stimulate imagery\nfrom the subconscious mind. Continuous line drawing and doodling can encourage\nmeandering thoughts from which to build. Combining ink\, water and salt enables\ntransformations of found shapes and structures. Erasing graphite\, ink and pastel marks\nwith rubbers or water (if using yupo paper) leaves ghost prints to further develop. I see\nlines and I follow them; marks take on forms and I explore them as they lead me on an\nintuitive\, meditative journey. With the accompaniment of music\, a euphoric trance-like state\ncan be reached. \nRotation of the paper while working is an integral part of the process\, forcing the eye to\nsee in other ways. Numerous configurations in which to view diptychs and triptychs are\npossible. Which way is up? The excitement of resolving struggles to enable the work to\nreveal itself is addictive. \nThe consistent subject matter in my imaginary landscapes is triggered by an enduring\nfascination with textures\, patterns and life forms in the natural world. Although I don’t draw\ndirectly from nature or use references to create the works\, these worlds run parallel with\nmy art. Ambiguous macro scenes suggest forests\, subterranean and underwater worlds.\nSoft\, curved biomorphic forms merge internal and external worlds. \nDrawing has become my passion. As I come from a printmaking background where\nplanned and controlled processes were required\, it has been liberating to relinquish rigid\nmethods and embrace spontaneous exploration. \nThe works in this exhibition were made during the pandemic. As I worked on my art\, my art\nworked on me as a therapy\, providing comfort in times of stress and anxiety. I invite the\nviewer to engage with these works – to drift\, dream\, meditate and escape.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]Artist’s Bio // Alison Russell \nEducation\n1989\nBachelor of Fine Art majoring in Printmaking\nMonash University\, Caulfield \nSolo Exhibitions\n2019\nAcufitz\, Melbourne\n2018\nCambridge Studio Gallery\, Melbourne\nGroup Exhibitions\n2019\nEmerge\nBrunswick Street Gallery\, Melbourne\n2018\nFinalist in Life Abstracted\nCambridge Studio Gallery\, Melbourne\n2008\nAlafia Gallery\, Melbourne\nGasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n2007\nGasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n2006\nGasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n1990\nLinden Gallery\, Melbourne\n1989\nCaulfield Arts Complex\, Melbourne[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

We are the unwelcome. We should take our misfortune elsewhere. \n– Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini \nThey desperately fled the danger and horror of their homes\, now deserted. They left with longing and loss for those who had to stay behind\, for the promised land\, not their own\, far away and unwelcoming. The journey dangerous and frightening\, in the rubber boats into which they were crammed\, men\, women and their children\, whilst the waves mounted and their flimsy transport to freedom and safety\, disintegrated beneath them. One can die in many ways. They are asylum seekers. \nIn my work I have tried to represent the danger\, despair and lingering hope in the faces\, caricatures of humanity. \nI have chosen a combination of yacht sails with the rubber dinghies. At once symbols of lingering hope and creeping fear and despair. The hope remains in the sails as a propulsive force that with the wind\, which exits\, but cannot be seen. \nThey risk everything for a chance of freedom.  How many boats are never seen.  How many people are never fished from the sea. \nIn contrast to the imagery of asylum seekers we see in journalistic imagery presented through newspapers\, journals and the news\, this body of work presents my personal\, emotional expression. \nMargaret Gold \nSupport can be sort through:\nAsylum Seeker Resource Centre\nAustralian Red Cross\nFoundation House and the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project \n*The artist has pledged a percentage of sales from this exhibition to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre \n\nFounded in 2001\, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum.\nThe ASRC is an independent not-for-profit organisation whose programs support and empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical\, mental and social wellbeing.\nThey champion the rights of people seeking asylum and mobilise a community of compassion to create lasting social and policy change.\nThe ASRC movement is proudly supported by a community of committed volunteers and supporters and assists around 7\,000 people seeking asylum each year.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]\nMARGARET GOLD C.V.\nBorn in Melbourne\, Australia\n1979 – 81 Studied at Richmond College in London\n1982 – 84 Fine Arts degree at the Victorian College of the Arts\, majoring in Sculpture and Painting \nSelected Solo Exhibitions\n2022 fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2018 fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2013 fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2010 fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\nSPAN Galleries\, Melbourne\nSPAN Galleries\, Melbourne\nAustralian Galleries\, Collingwood\nJudith Pugh Gallery\, Fitzroy\n1990 Arden Street Gallery\, North Melbourne \nSelected Group Exhibitions\n2019     Group Show – 45 Downstairs\, Melbourne 20 x 20 cm\n2018     Group Show – 45 Downstairs\, Melbourne 20 x 20 cm\n2017     45 at 45 – Exhibition 45 Downstairs Gallery\, Melbourne\n2014     WHO’s LOOKING AT YOU – Portrait Prize\, Cambridge Studio Gallery\n2011     Postcard Show – Linden Galleries\, St. Kilda\n2010     Exhibition – Chapman and Bailey Gallery – Belle Arti Prize\n2007     Group Show\, SPAN Galleries\nMelbourne Art Fair – Exhibition Building\n1998     Group Show – 45 Downstairs (anti-Grand Prix)\nFitzroy Gallery\, Fitzroy\nDrawing Exhibition – Raw Studios\n1988     Tenth Mildura Sculpture Triennial\n‘Sculpture ‘85’\, World Trade Centre\, Melbourne\n‘Graven Images’\, Art Gallery of Western Australia in association with Perth International Festival of the Arts\, Perth W.A.\nGroup Show\, Victorian College of the Arts\n1981     Orleans House\, London U.K. \nCollected in London\, Germany\, U.S.A.  and Australia \nPublications:  Tenth Mildura Sculpture Triennial ‘Graven Images’ Perth International Festival of Arts\, W.A.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The elements of composition are both rigid and fluid\, angular and curvy\, resulting in endless possibilities. The concept of radical geometry revisited and reconceptualised. \nMichelangelo & Jenn have introduced fabric and stitching into Vele. The hard lines that defined earlier collaborations begin to soften with curves of the fabric\, where rigid geometry dissolves into perforated skins and flowing sails transporting the viewer to another dimension. Broken and torn fabrics are stitched and the fluidity of the newly acquired shapes would merge with the landscape\, the built environment and ultimately with our souls to take us on a Vele journey.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]Michelangelo Russo born 1962\, Campobasso\, Italy. With a captive eye only the sound of art can perceive\, a fresh scent is awakened\, an endless story is revealed. \nThe idea for The Book of Fabulas and Scented Echoes was born in 2020\, during lock down. Being at home\, inspired Drasko to open forgotten art books and play with the concept of having a museum in your own backyard. Drasko has experimented with 3-D art for over a decade\, and he developed the concept of 3-D cut outs\, or ‘analogue augmented reality’\, by which he holds a cut out of characters from\, mostly\, European famous paintings and juxtapose them with a background of daily life in Australia\, in photographic work. This contrast makes reference to colonial narratives and puts forward the need to bring stories of yesteryear to life with a new lens; in the land that is our home. \nIn addition to the images\, Drasko has collaborated with partner in life\, the literary translator (English into Spanish) and emerging artist Eleonor Palacio\, who added another layer to the atmosphere of the works by writing accompanying poetic descriptions inspired by the visuals\, to create a single voice. As Dr Bernhard Sachs has described it\, the series presented in this show ‘draws from a persistent and lively thematic threaded throughout [Drasko’s] practice\, a rich Balkan folkloric imaging tradition\, its contemporary analogue in popular culture and its humorous\, affectionate and ironic perspective on so-called high art. The meeting of this with the intense literary tradition of its South American corollary in Melbourne proposes a sophisticated larrikin poetic’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef”][vc_column_text]Drasko Boljevic has an extensive career as an artist working in a variety of mediums. A Victorian College of the Arts graduate (Bachelor or Fine Art\, 1998 & Master of Contemporary Art-Painting\, 2012)\, he started his studies training as a sculptor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb (former Yugoslavia). His art practice\, which includes\, among other forms\, sculpture\, painting\, installation\, stencil art and photography\, strikes an unusual balance between classically trained skill and contemporary innovation. A part of the Melbourne art scene for almost three decades\, Drasko has a long exhibiting history and his work has attracted recognition both locally and internationally\, most recently being shown at the Urban Art Biennale in Volglingen Hutte\, Germany. His stencil art has featured in half a dozen publications in Australia\, UK and France. \nEleonor Palacio (aka Ele Cronopia) is a literary translator (English-Spanish) and linguist who loves diving into art and crafting words. \nThe pair have been partners in life for the last 20 years and often muse for each other’s creative endeavours. This recent collaboration has seen Eleonor tracing a poetic narrative inspired by Drasko’s artwork to create a single voice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

However\, in the course of the history of culture\, this sensory approach has more often been replaced by an intellectual understanding of the form of well-known objects. Thought\, content\, and illustration suppressed form; the description replaced the understanding. \nFilip’s sculptures are born out of a deeply personal iconology which resist interpretation in terms of simplistic symbolic equations. The major aim in creating his works is “to give to materials\, such as metal and stone\, a new identity – encoding messages of human emotion\, solitude\, and the inevitability of death within forms – all things that future generations will have to face as long as the planet Earth exists”. \nThe artist combines metal and stone forms\, suggesting the frailty of human existence\, or powerful monolithic shapes\, tarnished by the patina of time\, in an effort to indicate “visibly or invisibly” fragments of human existence. \nThis latest collection of sculptures visually examines the deep convictions of human experience. These emotions are often associated with struggle that we are all so familiar with. They are celebrated through simple abstract shapes and forms. The human figure is distorted to an elegant simple form creating tension and silent dialogue between the viewer and sculpture. The narrative of the characters contrasts with its hi-tech surface finish and colour further evoking their symbolism. They are all individual pieces and yet they share certain emotive and spiritual qualities that unite them all together. \nAbove all\, Filip’s sculptures\, project a sense of timelessness\, a concept of fragments from the past located now between the past and the future – with all the sense of mystery\, which this concept holds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Bringing together ten artists\, the exhibition explores the spectrum of effects that the pandemic had on artistic practices. \nFor two years\, the world – especially those of us in Melbourne – was confronted by challenges during the pandemic. Thoughts of vaccine hesitancy\, the spread of misinformation\, and extended lockdowns had severe psychological consequences. \nThe effect of the pandemic on the visual arts community was similar. Artists faced many unprecedented interruptions – studio spaces were closed\, exhibitions were postponed or cancelled\, access to materials was halted\, and many had loved ones to care for. The effect on artists varied widely; isolation encouraged frustrated artmakers to escape reality by looking inwards and focusing on their artistic practice. New techniques emerged and were developed\, new mediums tried and tested\, and different landscapes of the imagination were explored. Artists took the opportunity to reflect on past work and reconsider it in a new context. They found togetherness through collaborative projects with one another\, developing our ideas about community\, love\, and the sustaining principles of a kinder world – a compassion that unites us in uncertain times. \nOut of the pandemic emerged art founded on resilience\, humour\, absurdity\, and the celebration of life. Not only had we found hope through the consumption of art – in music\, books\, and media – artists channelled their survival into and through their creative endeavours. This exhibition is a visual acknowledgement of the beacons of light\, gems of hope\, and human strength that we now irrevocably share in our collective conscience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Their aftermath had a devastating impact on people and the land. Thoughts of recovery seemed far from our\ncontrol. To make sense of it all\, Gavin Brown painted a work called After the Fire – an attempt to find beauty amidst the\nchaos of the crisis. \nAnd then coronavirus hit. The artist spent the majority of Melbourne’s lockdown in his studio\, looking outward. Once again\,\neverything appeared so ugly. Trying to make sense of this bizarre and difficult time\, Gavin turned his focus to hope. Instead\nof dwelling on the destruction he chose to concentrate on the regrowth of Australia’s flowering gums and native flowers. In\nresponse to this\, he set about creating optimistic artworks out of that time of devastation. \nAfter the Fire aims to bring a series of works that inspire confidence in the resilience of humankind and the regrowth of\nnature.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A melancholic wink at consumerism and spirituality. A dialogue between a certain past and an uncertain future. \nThe artist reclaims engravings of Renaissance images and layers them with a mélange of modern detritus – from aluminium cans to discarded laptop motherboards – scanned at ultra-high resolution to reveal surprising new views and hidden landscapes. \nTechnology is as omnipotent and omnipresent as religion once was\, controlling what we see and feel\, for better or worse. In the past\, priests and preachers were the exclusive producers of cultural propaganda\, but today this role is subsumed by the ubiquity of our devices and our connection to the internet. \nSacellum is a contemplation of this control of our hearts and minds; a moving patternation of the contemporary and the classical. The portals of belief continue to look over us\, providing a glimmer of hope for what lies ahead. \nView the catalogue for this exhibition here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Or is that to be to rape and pillage the resources to fix Earth…as PEAK is drawing near. \nThe project planning & preparation began in early 2018\, with specific image items collected\, some items photographed then printed to create the visual / narrative.  As the series developed and world events such as the Coronavirus came into play\, each scene electrified the significance of the message. \nThe artist began creating this body of work in solation during the COVID-19 lockdowns. \nThis body of work is collage on large canvas to be sold as an original piece at gallery exhibition. \nPrints of the series will also be available in various sizes (unframed only).[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-093309a6-495c”][vc_column_text]There’s no glimmer with our glamazon.\nShe’s the glambassador of intersexuality.\nThe land of zoom where all creatures are fun and wise.\nWhere did this artsexual come from? \nThe gutter would be fashionable\, but that’s not it. \nYou could say Venus came from Cool City. And you’d be right.\nShe’s been chilling in Cool City until the eggs of genius hatched.\nAnd we love a smart chick. \nIt all started with art and heart.\nA growth through the wonders of the free mind.\nVenus always saw the pinnacle of acceptance would come from those who adore the oomph of the new and wonderful. \nShe is the product of a rampant imagination that found itself applying to all areas of beauty\, business and enterprise. There was something missing though. She found it in the wardrobe of deluxe fabrication. The wow factor made her whole. Her fate was to be a femme. The proper use of the femme fatale if the truth be known. \nOut of the shell came Venus. The fashionistic. \nAnd with such impact. She has rocketed to the galaxy of untold glamour and panache. \nNever has an emergence been quite so fun and phallic. Riding a rocket\, the glamazon … you do the math. \nIn the distance behind this rocketing star are strewn her huge careers in music\, design\, fashion\, make-up\, hair and all the other dazzlers. \nEnter now\, please\, the Glamazone. \nVenus Virgin Tomarz has eclipsed everything. \nThe glamburger with the lot. \nEat. \nAuthor – Ian Buckland 2016 ©\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
