The exhibition will showcase progressive textile art\, exploring the relationship of textiles to other art disciplines and the limitlessness of textile art. \nSocial Fabric will highlight and explore the ability of textiles to preserve memories of people\, places and times. The exhibition will look at the value of textiles in our lives and on the role of textiles in telling stories and presenting contemporary cultural and political issues. Flinders Lane was the centre of the fashion and textile trade in Melbourne for many years. Forty-Five Flinders Lane was part of this history as home to many textile businesses over the years. Social Fabric returns textiles to a place built to showcase them. \nSocial Fabric will highlight textile artists and the quality of their work raising awareness of contemporary textile arts. With textiles traditionally being held in low esteem and considered as ‘just women’s work’\, this exhibition will be an important opportunity to challenge its standing alongside other fine art. Social Fabric will showcase the variety of textile techniques\, wide range of materials and interpretations that challenge traditional ideas of textile art.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists” tab_id=”1759548842187-3b9d54a6-f035″][vc_column_text css=””]Naarm Textile Biennale – Social Fabric has been curated by Tamara Russell \nThe 97 Participating Artists are: \n\n\n\n\nAlex Hughes\nEllise Roberts\nMaryanne Moodie\n\n\nAli Griffin\nEnza Gandolfo\nMelanie Thoren\n\n\nAlison Cole\nErica Wells\nMelissa Laffy\n\n\nAlison Lewis\nFauve de Wilde\nMelody Chia\n\n\nAmanda Forsyth\nFiona Prendergast\nMichelle Trewin\n\n\nAmy Cohen\nGail Stiffe\nMillie Spagnolo\n\n\nAngela Rossitto\nGaye Naismith\nMiranda Brett\n\n\nAnnie Bolitho\nIaki Vallejo\nNicky Robinson\n\n\nArabella Strachan\nIsabel Deakin\nNicole Gammie\n\n\nAshley Mariani\nJane Burns\nNicole Kemp\n\n\nBarbara Roe Hebb\nJanita Ryan\nPat Porter\n\n\nBarbara Wheeler\nJayne Newgreen\nPeta Tranquille\n\n\nBonnie Lawrence\nJB Knibbs\nRebecca George\n\n\nBronny (Bell) Handfield\nJess Hall\nRobyn Elliott\n\n\nCarol Rowlands\nJessie Deane\nRobyn Stickland\n\n\nCarole Wilson\nJoy Barrett\nRonda Hazell\n\n\nCarolyn Cardinet\nJude Worters\nRosalind Byass\n\n\nCatriona Galbraith & Suzanne Swann\nJuliet D Collins\nRosalind Price\n\n\nChloe Kokoris\nKatherine Seaton\nSally Darlison\n\n\nChristina Turner\nKathy Landvogt\nSamantha Thompson\n\n\nChristine Lethlean\nKirsty Gorter\nSharon Greenaway\n\n\nChristine Tingay\nLeanne Poole\nSimone Kottmann\n\n\nClaire Humphrys-Hunt\nLindsay Hussey\nSonja Taylor\n\n\nClare Nelson\nLindy de Wijn\nSophia Slaney-Marsch\n\n\nClare Ryan\nLis de Vries\nSophie Shingles\n\n\nClaudia Bloxsome\nLouise Saxton\nSue Cunningham\n\n\nDeb K Williams\nLucy Hearn\nSze Tjin Yek\n\n\nDebra Billson\nLynn Berry and Margaret Knight\nTamara Russell\n\n\nDebra Howlett\nManasee Jog\nTim Craker\n\n\nDenise Honan\nMargarita Shoebridge\nZoe Jones\n\n\nDi Ellis\nMarie Bogoyevitch\nZoe Pavlou\n\n\nElizabeth van Herwaarden\nMark Ewenson\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”EXHIBITION CATALOGUE” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F10%2FCATALOGUE-compressed2.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

During her journey\, Gobey was granted the rare opportunity to paint en plein air in the historic gardens of the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcázar in Seville. It was here that the concept for her forthcoming exhibition\, The Garden of Life\, began to take shape. \nWhile Gobey has long been known for tackling challenging and emotionally charged themes in her work\, the turbulence of the current global climate prompted a shift. This new body of work offers viewers a moment of respite – an invitation to rest weary souls and reconnect with nature\, the subconscious\, and the unseen corners of the psyche. \nWorking primarily in oil\, Gobey has conjured an ‘other world’ populated by archetypal figures: cats\, horses\, and anthropomorphic beings set against dreamlike\, sometimes imagined\, sometimes real landscapes. Many of the works feature silver-leafed edges\, evoking the kind of quiet opulence found in Southern Europe’s ancient palaces and sanctuaries. \nA long-time student of psychology\, Gobey draws inspiration from the writings of Carl Jung\, particularly his reflections on nature’s restorative qualities: \n“Whenever we touch nature we get clean. People who have got dirty through too much civilization take a walk in the woods\, or a bath in the sea. Entering the unconscious\, entering yourself through dreams\, is touching nature from the inside and this is the same thing\, things are put right again.” \nThe Garden of Life is an exhibition shaped by this philosophy – a visual invitation to pause\, reflect\, and step beyond the conscious world into places both ancient and eternal. Opening night is Tuesday 30 September 5 – 7 pm and the exhibition closes on Saturday 11 October.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Janice Gobey is a Melbourne-based artist working across oil painting and installation. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts with a Master of Visual Art (First Class Honours)\, her practice explores themes of memory\, displacement\, and the emotional states that shape human experience\, informed by her studies and interest in Psychology and Sociology. \nGobey has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally\, with residencies in London\, New York\, Berlin\, Leipzig\, Provence\, and at Château Orquevaux in France. In 2023\, Gobey was granted the rare opportunity to paint en plein air in the historic gardens of the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcázar in Seville. \nHer work has been recognised through selection for exhibitions including  The Linden Innovators\, The F Word at Ararat Regional Gallery and Fixation at Town Hall Gallery. She has also been shortlisted for major awards such as the Kennedy Art Prize\, Wyndham Art Prize\, Toyota Sculpture Prize and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize. She is a two-time prizewinner\, including Best in Show at the Red Hill Art Show.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

These passages\, often overlooked\, hold memories of those who move through them. They are witnesses to change\, both personal and ecological. \nMy linocuts map these spaces in intricate detail\, treating each mark as a form of care. Whether drawn from an overshadowed urban laneway\, or a rural track softened by wind and time\, each image is part record\, part response. The process itself- slow\, deliberate carving- is meditative\, mirroring the gradual regeneration I often witness in nature and in people. \nHaving worked in disaster recovery\, I see art as an act of reassembly and restoration. These images acknowledge loss while also pointing to quiet forms of repair. The pathways depicted here are not just physical\, they’re emotional cartographies\, tracing displacement\, rebuilding\, belonging. \nBy focusing on what’s often unseen or under-appreciated\, I invite viewers to consider how we move through the world\, and what it means to truly notice the spaces that hold us. \nLink to 3RRR SmartArts interview with Richard Watts and Amanda Western: https://www.rrr.org.au/shared/broadcast-episode/35180/9258000/10351000 \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Awards\n2025\n– Finalist\, Sunshine Coast National Art Prize (QLD)\n– Highly Commended\, Milburn Art Prize (QLD)\n– Best Other Media\, Bendigo Easter Art Show (VIC)\n– Winner Queenscliff Art Prize Print Award (VIC)\n– Finalist\, Flanagan Art Prize (VIC)\n– Finalist St Colombus Art Prize (NSW)\n2024\n– People’s Choice Award Winner\, Sunshine Coast National Arts Prize (QLD)\n– First prize\, Printmakers Exhibition\, Geelong Arts Society (VIC)\n– Finalist\, Southern Ocean Art Prize (SA)\n– Finalist\, Hornsby Art Prize (NSW)\n– Finalist\, Stanthorpe Art Prize (QLD)\n– Finalist\, Artists for Conservation International Juried Exhibition (online)\n– First Prize\, All Other Mediums\, Bacchus Marsh Annual Art Show (VIC)\n– Honourable Mention\, Castlemaine Annual Art Show (VIC)\n– First Prize\, Lineworks Art Show\, Geelong Arts Society (VIC)\n– Best “Other” Class\, Warrnambool & District Easter Arts Festival (VIC)\n2023\n– Visual and Performing Arts Award\, Ballarat Arts Foundation (VIC) \nCollections & Commissions\n2024\n– Sunshine Coast Art Collection (QLD public gallery acquisition)\n– Ballarat Grammar Fine Art Collection (VIC)\n– Mural\, City of Ballarat Winter Festival (VIC)\n– Mural\, Haymes Paints\, Ballarat (VIC)\n– Road Nationals Coffee Cup artwork\, City of Ballarat (VIC)\n2023\n– Mural\, The Mallow Hotel\, Ballarat (VIC) \nSolo Exhibitions\n2025\n– “Ways Through” fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n– “Imprint: Marks We Leave Behind”\, KANK Exhibition Space\, Ballarat\n2024\n– “Laneways & Lattes\,” Accent Gallery\, Ballarat\n-“Fragile Fight\,” Ross Creek Gallery\, Ballarat\n2023\n– “I See You; Do You See Me?” Old Butcher Shop Gallery\, Ballarat \nGroup Exhibitions\n2025\n– Milburn Art Prize\, Brisbane Institute of Art\, QLD\n– Habitat Exhibition\, Belco Arts\, Canberra\, ACT\n– Gathering II\, Goldfields Printmakers Exhibition\, Ross Creek Gallery\, VIC\n– Lineworks Exhibition\, Shearers Arms Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Flanagan Art Prize\, Ballarat\, VIC\n– St Colombus Art Prize\, Sydney\, NSW\n– Latest & Greatest III\, Caloundra Regional Gallery (invitational)\, QLD\n– Linden Postcard Show 2024-25\, Linden Contemporary Art\, St Kilda VIC\n2024\n– Southern Ocean Art Prize 2024\, finalist exhibition (invitational)\, SA\n– Hornsby Art Prize (invitational)\, NSW\n– Sunshine Coast National Art Prize (invitational)\, QLD\n– Stanthorpe Art Prize (invitational)\, QLD\n– Artists for Conservation\, International Juried Exhibition (online-invitational)\n– Shearers Arms Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Liminal Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Castlemaine Market Building Gallery (invitational)\, VIC\n– Fairbanks Eye Gallery\, Ballarat (invitational)\, VIC\n– Brunswick St Art Gallery\, Fitzroy (invitational)\, VIC\n– The Space Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Mercure Convention Centre\, Ballarat\, VIC \nMemberships\nCommittee of Management Member\, Print Council of Australia\nPresident\, Ballarat Society of Artists\nMentor\, Ballarat Arts Foundation (2024 & 2025)\nNational Association of Visual Artists (NAVA)\nGoldfields Printmakers Group (VIC) \nEducation\nMentoring program 2023-25\, Ballarat Arts Foundation\nCert III Visual Arts\, Oxygen College\, Ballarat \nResidencies\n2025 All That We Are Art Residency (Tasmania\, two week residential)\n2023 David Frazer etching workshop (Greece\, ten days residential)[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1753931943627-0daf081d-1b11″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 16 September\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In her bold and immersive style\, Shakespeare’s tragedy is distilled to its raw essence by Gerstle\, with a powerful five-actor ensemble delivering an intense\, deeply human exploration of jealousy\, power\, and betrayal. A gripping\, unflinching take on one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. \nWhen the esteemed general Othello elopes with Desdemona\, defying societal expectations\, his most trusted officer\, Iago\, begins a ruthless campaign of manipulation and deceit. It is a universe created by Khaanis Uldur\, a being of shadow and darkness. Muktoraah\, a realm of chaos and destruction is controlled and ruled by divine beings known as the Kha Muktu. There are ten different Kha Muktu within Mukturaah\, each with divine powers of their own\, being loosely based on the seven deadly sins. This exhibition features creatures\, worlds\, gods\, magical beings and powerful relics from the realm of chaos. \nMy broader art practice involves this universe\, as well as three others that exist beside each other\, combining in the centre. Together they are called Ultahnor where every creation I make resides somewhere within. \nMy practice is heavily inspired by fantasy\, science fiction\, video games\, movies/tv\, current events and childhood memories. I often use shiny materials such as metal leaf to imitate rare collectable cards that I used to collect when I was younger. The stories and world builder aspect of my practice have also been heavily influenced by childhood memories of video games\, having strange worlds and peculiar characters in most games I played. \nThe exhibition ‘Mukturaah’ was created in a response to current world events. Global conflicts\, widespread diseases and financial stress have all played a part in these artworks. Containing works on board\, paper and resin I invite the viewer into the realm of Muktoraah\, to experience this fictional land of chaos and destruction.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Braden Howard is a Melbourne based artist\, practicing in studio art. He originally grew up in the city of Wagga Wagga and moved to Melbourne in 2016 to study art. His current practice is heavily influenced by TV/movies\, video games\, pop culture\, current events and childhood memories. My intention has been to capture the shared\, everyday experience of moving through the city – an essential and uncelebrated part of contemporary urban life. From walking down crowded streets to riding escalators\, waiting on train platforms\, or standing at tram stops\, we navigate these public spaces in the quiet company of strangers. \nMuch of the inspiration for this body of work has been my weekly train ride from Melbourne’s inner north where I live\, to the city where I teach a painting class. That journey has become more than just a routine – it’s a window into the rhythm and richness of the public realm. Each trip offers a glimpse into a diverse world where everyone is quietly moving through their own story. \nI’m especially drawn to those small\, unspoken moments of connection – a glance\, a shared pause\, the way strangers shuffle to make room on a crowded train\, or the momentary connection made through shared frustration or delight – a late train\, or an overheard joke. \nThese moments make the city feel deeply human – and endlessly captivating. \n  \nPre-sales will open on Friday\, August 15\, at 12pm. Working in oil on linen\, I create richly textured tonal pieces marked by sparse\, carefully arranged compositions in an effort to evoke a feeling of quiet simplicity and calm. \nMore recently I have shifted my focus to create a new body of work that is focused on documenting snippets of my time spent travelling into and out of the city. These paintings have both a compassionate and slightly melancholy atmosphere.  Through them\, I express my deep connection to the city that has shaped me — its light\, its texture\, its heart.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816688131-c7b41ae7-bea9″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 19 August\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”EXHIBITION CATALOGUE” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F08%2FGoing-Places_Catalogue_updated_26.8.2025.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

These values tend to be differently expressed by each artist\, though all three share gravitational pulls to bold colour and to the use of citational strategies. \nIn the case of Johnson and Burder\, representations of landscape/field/country are physically suffused by or overlaid with uncanny colour; in the case of Watson Knight and Burder\, hard-edge figurative elements disappear in favour of blurred outlines that suggest illusion and speed\, the ephemeral nature of perception. The careful distillation of such influences can be seen over the numerous visual iterations and exhibitions held by each artist since they first studied art together at RMIT in the early 1990s. Echoing cultural pasts remains a crucial part of each artist’s process\, but the works here ultimately speak directly to the present. \nMichele Burder’s paintings explore views from roads as seen through bus or car windows\, as well as those captured on walks through public parks and local reserves. They reflect on the transience of nature\, meditating on movement and stillness\, celebrating the temporal and constructed nature of these landscapes. Genres of landscape as well as the literal photographed ‘field’ are a starting point for Burder’s dynamic gestures in paint. These emphasise reverberations of movement\, Richteresque blurs. The paintings play with distortion\, subtle colour schemes and echoing forms. The resulting obscuring of the scene or field is a way for the painter to allude to memory and passage through urbanised space. \nIn Susan Watson Knight’s recent work\, traditional quilting shapes have provided the starting point for the development of high-coloured pigment prints (as echoes from the past). Familiar geometric shapes such as the polygon and the rhombus are scaled up and their edges blurred as Watson Knight conflates traditional oil painting and digital technologies. These images pay particular homage to anonymous Amish quilters from the early 1900s with their vibrant modernist approach to colour and design. Pigment prints variously evolve through ongoing experimentation with shape and colour and exaggerated blurring techniques. This renders pictorial outcomes kinetic\, as shapes across the picture plane appear to move and expand in interesting ways. \nAmanda Johnson works directly with echoes of colonial landscape genres and site-specific observation of degraded ‘wilderness’ areas. In the resulting temporal mashups\, the painter uses toxic colour to manipulate generic landscape atmosphere. While sunset views traditionally suggest time passing and lyrical escape\, Johnson’s DayGlo ‘fields’ elicit mourning and disquiet; invasive weeds insinuate foreground\, middleground and background and remnant stands of giant eucalypts frame depleted vistas. In the studio\, historical landscape sources recede as the artist maps changes to vegetation profiles and species diversity. The artist’s most recent depictions of botanical infestations and logging aftermath arise from field trips to the Otway State Forest\, Tarkine and Florentine Valley.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Biographies” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Michele Burder \nMichele Burder’s paintings explore views from roads as seen through bus or car windows\, as well as those captured on walks through public parks and local reserves. Genres of landscape as well as the literal photographed ‘field’ is a starting point for Burder’s dynamic gestures in paint. These emphasise reverberations of movement\, Richteresque blurs. The paintings play with distortion\, subtle colour schemes and echoing forms. The resulting obscuring of the scene or field is a way for the painter to allude to memory and passage through urbanised space. \nMichele Burder is a painter based in Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. She completed a Fine Arts Honours degree and Master of Arts (Painting) at RMIT. Since 1990 she has shown regularly in solo and group exhibitions. In 2005 she was an Artist in Residence at the Arthur Boyd Trust\, Bundanon. Her work has been shortlisted for the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize\, Bendigo Art Gallery. \n  \nSusan Watson Knight \nSusan Watson Knight’s geometric images fuse painting\, photography and digital printing technologies in an ongoing experimentation with the polygon\, rhombus and other traditional quilting shapes. Warm and cool\, complimentary and simultaneous contrasts of colour assist the artist’s continuing investigation of complex relationships between colour and shape. The edges of her forms and colour fields are softened and blurred to some extent and in the more exaggerated renderings these shapes pulsate and quiver. Many of the dazzling colour choices are inspired by the surrounding landscape and the birdlife and foliage outside her studio. The colour palette from the Birdsong Series directly echoes the brilliant plumage of the Crimson Rosellas and King Parrots\, whereas other compositions are more directly influenced by the artists interest in Amish quilts designed and completed in the early part of the 20th Century. \nSusan Watson Knight is a visual artist living and working on the outskirts of Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. After studying Arts and Education at La Trobe University she completed a Fine Arts Degree and Honours Year at RMIT. Her work was recently shortlisted and exhibited in the 2024 Biennale of Colour and Light and the 2025 Omnia Art Prize. \n  \nAmanda Johnson \nAmanda Johnson typically retraces locations where optimistic views of early colonial landscape painting were made. Paintings mimic nineteenth-century landscape silhouettes\, but heightened colour\, alongside the foregrounding of invasives and stunted epicormic growth invites reconsideration of the landscape view; are these paintings images of beauty\, erasure or threat? The resulting temporal\, cultural ‘mashups’ remind us that the colonial past is not remote\, but part of a colonial present in which ecological violence goes unchecked. \nAmanda lives and works on Gadabanud Country at Cape Otway and in Naarm/Melbourne. Her paintings were recently shortlisted in the Hadley’s Art Prize (2024\, 2023\, 2021\, 2019)\, the 2024 Len Fox Art Prize and the 2024 John Leslie Landscape Prize. Her recent solo show\, Stranglehold\, Colonial Heat was held at fortyfive downstairs in 2024\, continuing the artist’s long-term exploration of landscape\, country and toxicity. Since graduating from a Master’s degree at Victorian College of the Arts in 1995\, she has been the recipient of Asialink and Arthur Boyd Bundanon painting residencies.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816603277-13d69d57-c399″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 5 August\, 5-7pm \n  \nArtist Talk \nSaturday 16 August\, 2pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This insight has conjured a plethora of images for me\, some joyful and others more painful where I’ve been pushed to the brink of darkness. \nThese lessons have shaped who I am today and I am grateful for them as they have led me on a path of self discovery and awareness through the art of meditation. \nThis stillness has provided me with clarity\, and has brought me a new perspective that has allowed me to grow and evolve as a human being. \n“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly\, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” \nMAYA ANGELOU \n  \nAberrations by Michaela Sandberg \nIn an age ruled by screens\, where perfection can be attained through pixels\, Aberrations seeks beauty in error and the unexpected. \nThrough a process of digital exploration\, these photographs dissolve into artifacts of technological infancy. Here\, software is utilized not as a means to perfection\, but as a medium that speaks its own visual language. A language that risks extinction as technology hurdles toward idealised uniformity. \nAn aberration is a deviation. Within these deviations\, there is an invitation to welcome what was not planned for. Each image is a negotiation between control and surrender\, between the software’s pursuit of perfection and the artist’s embrace of imperfection. Aberrations critiques our desire to correct\, enhance\, and manipulate\, and serves as a reminder that\, in the midst of rapid technological evolution\, one thing remains constant: the beauty that exists beyond our intentions and plans.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’s Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Dawn Allmark \nDawn has been a practising artist for over 30 years and is also the driving force behind Madam Frou Frou\, a successful hair & beauty salon based in Carlton\, Melbourne. He is currently living and working in Melbourne. \nHis exhibition history includes 20 solo exhibitions and many group shows. \nSmith has been a finalist in art prizes including the Archibald Art Prize\, Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize and the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize. \nHis work has primarily been landscape-based\, usually through a lens that focuses on the essence of the subject\, resulting in an abstract representation that invites the viewer’s resonant interpretation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816396890-125289f5-79a5″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 22 July\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Glenn has a crisis on his hands. He’s had a successful career as a marketing exec. for a major Oil company\, selling the fuel for the American Dream. Now he’s waking up to the damage it’s doing to the climate. In a secret meeting he consults with Bud\, a slick young talent from the Tobacco industry\, to figure out how to sell a toxic product – and how to live with yourself if you succeed. \nCompelling\, unnerving\, and piercingly relevant\, Smokescreen is a psychologically-charged battle of wits that unpicks how the climate crisis we face today was shaped by the invisible hands of Ad Men. Searing performances by Damon Baudin and C.S. Carroll ignite a pressure-cooker of manipulation\, morality\, and earth-shattering choices about controlling the narrative while the planet burns. \n“It’s the job of the arts to challenge and confront\, especially in difficult times. Showcasing Snelling’s unstoppable no-holds-barred performance style\, this rollercoaster show aligns the personal with the universal\, and makes visible the invisible experience of chronic illness like you’ve never seen before. \nWith unflinching rawness\, gut-punching comedy and a heavenly twist\, Happy-Go-Wrong blends clowning\, poetic existentialism\, otherworldly movement and rollerskating with a spellbinding brown paper set that moves with Andi in striking visual metaphor. \nIn a remarkable parallel journey to Andi’s own recovery from Lyme disease\, Happy-Go-Wrong truly is the little show that could. Her illustrative stylized banksias are painted in accordance to the flower spikes and leaf information diligently recorded by the authors. The seed cones are a point of colourful whimsy and the backgrounds acknowledge the land these beautiful plants were created in. \nThe artist’s interest was piqued on realising that a banksia was not just a shrub with yellow tubular shaped flowers and saw tooth leaves. Banksias are trees\, shrubs\, prostrates and ground cover. Flower spikes range from about 3cm high to 40cm\, most are upright but some are pendulous\, they can have a vertical axis\, be round or have cone shaped clusters\, and range in colour from green to creams\, yellows\, oranges\, reds & to purples. Leaves can be ivy shaped\, feathered like a fern\, saw-toothed\, finely serrated\, linear\, oblong\, obovate or elliptical and sized from a few millimetres to 50cm. Each banksia on display shows the simplistic essence of how particular species differ from others.  All 79 species are displayed in this exhibition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Athenie Leckey came to art officially while studying an Advanced Diploma Of Visual Arts after many years studying and working in areas of Health and Education. Crafting was a powerful family influence and she looks at acrylic painting as an extension of all that has come before. \nAthenie has participated in many group exhibitions since her first student exhibitions in 2018. This is her first solo exhibition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1744777618188-926c0421-347c”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 24th June\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Franklin (aka sue.k.). \nWith the intent to open the experience of viewing to one that’s unhindered by narrative\, each work exhibited as part of Drawing Space: minus and plus depicts a sphere\, or spheres\, and a horizon line only. While minimal in what is presented\, these\, along with the surface marks found in most\, become the tools to negotiate the complexities of space\, time\, and the emotive power of colour and image. Conventional means with which to apply narrative are negated leaving nothing but a pure experience of what is before\, the material substance of the work. \nThe approach taken in the production of these works\, and the framing choice specific to the aesthetics\, lead to a blurring of multiple boundaries. Layering of colours and marks in a similar way found with painting leave the boundary between drawing and painting precarious and in question. This is compounded by the choice to frame to the edge of the work without the traditional mounting on matboard found with drawings\, while still placing the work under glass\, as is traditional in drawing work. The antiquated wide scoop style of the dark timber frame with its high edge lends itself to a removal of temporal positioning\, a removal of time. This is further enhanced with the absence of narrative in the pictorial space and the painterly approach to application of the medium\, they too allow a positioning of time and experience of space that is not now. Yet in contrast\, the abstract presentation of sphere and line heralds modernity and brings in to play a tension between contemporary and bygone and unveils a dichotomy within the work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]ABOUT \nSuzanne .k. He’d make a stage of anything\, dancing around\, singing to anyone who’d listen. His repertoire was packed full of gems\, but there’s one in particular we adored—the chicken dance. He’d shove a cork into his mouth as a beak and waggle about like a chicken yearning to fly. A simple idea\, really\, but the performance was something else. We’d be in stitches by the end of it—every single time. \nI was feeling lonely yesterday\, so I dug up the family archives. They’re packed away in a large cardboard box beneath the stairs\, crammed between the vacuum cleaner and Dutch oven. I can barely carry them anymore—I usually have Ellie drag them out. I was curious to see if we’d captured the famous chicken dance. \nFor the first time\, I realised Ellie appeared incrementally less over the years. At around fifteen\, he was almost entirely absent from the collection. Looking closer\, I observed a peculiar pattern. It appeared that once he caught sight of a camera\, he’d scurry off beyond the frame to avoid having his picture taken. In many of them you can see only parts of him—legs and arms mainly. It’s baffling to me how my beautiful boy could be deeply self-conscious. \nThen I remembered how much I resent having my picture taken.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Hamish Tobias is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in drawing and painting\, with a growing interest in sculpture. His work examines the ways we fixate on aspects of our appearance that others never notice\, magnifying perceived flaws to monstrous proportions in our minds. Through his practice\, he challenges conventional beauty standards and distorted self-image\, exploring the effects of warped self-perception on mental health. By creating a dialogue between opposites and evoking a sense of precariousness through imbalance and contrasting materials\, he seeks to convey these ideas with greater intensity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1743575580996-2ffc8bfe-195a”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 13 May\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

They had to drain the sea to make a country to live in. \nHitherto landscapes had served as scenery for mythological and religious subjects. Jacob van Ruysdael established the oevre in the 17thcentury with a long career essentially painting the weather.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1741934322509-588ba325-069f”][vc_column_text css=””]Edward Coleridge trained and practised as an architect in the UK until\, on a trip to South America\, he held an exhibition of Chilean landscapes in Santiago. On return he enlisted in the City and Guilds of London Art School whose Principal was the landscape painter\, Roger de Grey\, the then President of the Royal Academy. \nOn graduating in 1987 Edward joined the First Fleet Re-enactment Voyage in Mauritius for the leg across the Indian Ocean and was fortunate to crew on the brigantine\, Soren Larsen\, where he found that a sailing ship and its crew (and attendant albatrosses) a constant supply of subject matter. \nWhen becalmed in the Doldrums he had the strange experience of re-enacting a scene from his ancestor’s epic poem The Ancient Mariner\, was while able to sketch the replica of the motionless Bounty nearby\, literally illustrating the line from his ancestor’s epic poem The Ancient Mariner.  \nThe galleon lay motionless\, literally: ‘as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean’. \nThe crew cheerfully him blamed for the delay. Next day a breeze bringing the first serene albatross. \nEdward engaged in a Masters study of the landscape of western Victoria at a time when the long out-of-fashion works of Eugene von Guerard were being rediscovered. This happened just as every view the German artist painted in the Western District of Victoria was about to play host to a wind farm\, the vast white turbines providing a perversely paintable subject matter. \nA fascination with mapping\, and missing the revealing style of the Ordnance Survey maps of the UK\, led to a PhD Study of Major Thomas Mitchell’s maps and artwork at Federation University\, titled Mapping Australia Felix. It centred on the Surveyor of General of NSW‘s Journal of his 1836 expedition when he ‘discovered’ Western Victoria and\, enraptured by the “completely uninhabited region”\, dubbed the region Australia Felix. \nEdward’s paintings study the rural landscape on the eastern side of the so called Western District as where the Great Dividing Range officially ends at Mount Misery\, as well as\, in contrast\, the contemporary cityscapes of Melbourne. \nThe concept of ‘Letterbox Landscapes’ was first exhibited at QDOS gallery in Lorne in January 2024.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1743575653024-f7087076-ecd8″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 13 May\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
