Snowy is trying to find himself. Fate has other plans. \nSimon Longman’s hilarious\, heartfelt black-comedy makes its Australian premiere\, produced by The Ninth Floor. \nAcclaimed director Iain Sinclair (A View From The Bridge and Berlin\, MTC) directs Laurence Boxhall (The Mousetrap\, Comedy Theatre) and William McKenna (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as Snowy and Paul in this mercurial\, darkly funny\, and deeply human play about friendship\, purpose\, loneliness\, and a cow named Sandy. \nWith lighting from multi-Green Room award winner Richard Vabre\, and a stellar team behind the scenes bringing rural Herefordshire to life in Melbourne\, ‘Milked’ sees Snowy and Paul navigate a world where the grass always seems greener on the other side. \nImage by Kirsty O’Connor \nREVIEWS \n★★★★ “I defy anyone not to laugh out loud at Milked… It’s an immersive theatrical experience\, deepened by the way it traces all the animal pain underneath the comedy.” The Age \n★★★★ “Sinclair gives the script and young cast physical and metaphorical space to shine… Boxhall and McKenna ably walk the play’s tonal tightrope\, making the audience chuckle then feel sad or uncomfortable a moment later. They have an excellent rapport…” Limelight \n“This production is tight\, focused and entwines the darkness and the light in a clear-eyed\, entertaining way. The audience is in the hands of theatremakers at the top of their craft.” Australian Arts Review \n“It’s carried by two excellent performances… McKenna and Boxhall handling the shifts in tone from funny to sad\, from harangue to revelation\, and realistic to ridiculous with accomplished ease.” Stage Whispers[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1e64f-de5b”][vc_column_text]Writer: Simon Longman \nDirector: Iain Sinclair \nAssistant Director: Kirsty O’Connor \nCast: Laurence Boxhall\, William McKenna\, Richard Piper \nLighting Designer: Richard Vabre \n\nSet and Costume Design: Louisa Fitzgerald \n\nSound Design: Connor Brown \n\nStage Management: Jessica Smart \nProduction Manager: Ashleigh Walwyn \nFight Choreographer: Lyndall Grant \nProducer: Laurence Boxhall \n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1e64f-de5b”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Set against the racialized backdrop of 1940s Australia\, a Ngarrindjeri family must make the impossible choice to leave home and country forever. \nDirected by Maryanne Sam (Coconut Woman\, Yirramboi Festival)\, The Whisper tells a story of courage and bravery. It reimagines the journey of one Aboriginal family striving to stay together at all costs\, in the context of the painful 20th century colonial policies of separation\, child removal\, and racial segregation. \n“I wanted to write this play to honour family\, to honour legacy\, to honour the stories of survival of people from South Eastern Australia. I felt like I wanted to shed a light in this story about how tough it was for Aboriginal people\, First Nations people\, to survive. And how we have survived\, and how we as a people and as families come together to survive. And I wanted to tell this story to honour Nan and to honour her journey.” Brodie Murray \nArtwork by Emma Salmon \nSupported by: Craig Semple \n \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b48a-b59e”][vc_column_text]Writer: Brodie Murray \nDirector: Maryanne Sam \nCast: Melodie Reynolds-Diarra\, Greg Fryer\, Balla Neba\, and Brodie Murray \nProducer: Sarah James \nDramaturgy: Glenn Shea\, Mari Lourey\, and Maryanne Sam \nLighting and Sound Designer / Stage Manager: Shane Grant \nScenic Artist: Emma Salmon \nSet Builder: Jim Stenson[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b48a-b59e”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35\nMobTix: $15 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE FOR VISA OR MASTERCARD[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

As one-time pianist in Adelaide band Schmoe & Co\, he has appeared at national jazz events and as accompanist to numerous international and leading Australian jazz artists. He has recorded a number of albums and his compositions feature in the Australian Real Book \n\n\n“Alexander Nettelbeck\, a pianist of impeccable sensitivity and style\, has assembled a supergroup of talent: Conrad Henderson’s superb bass is delicately deadly dancing in interplay with Andy Horneman’s drums which ring in a finely tuned tapestry of rhythmic sounds enhancing the amazing saxophone(s) of Luke Carbon\, who plays as sweet and smooth as Tom Scott or as dirty and death-defying as Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Ten years later\, the company comes together for one last time to bring you another camp travesty from New York’s Queen of Queer Theatre\, just in time for Christmas. \nOne of the longest running plays in Off-Broadway history\, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom by Charles Busch tells the saga of two fatally seductive vampiresses whose paths first collide in ancient Sodom. Their bitter rivalry as bloodsuckers\, but more importantly\, as actresses\, endures for two thousand years with stops along the way in 1920’s silent movie Hollywood and contemporary Las Vegas. Vampire Lesbians of Sodom is a demented tribute to horror cinema and divas of the Golden Age. A cult camp classic comedy in the same vein as Elvira Mistress of the Dark and Death Becomes Her. \nWith a cast of Melbourne’s finest\, including Jennifer Vuletic (Wentworth\, Looking for Alibrandi)\, Artemis Ioannides (Wentworth\, Because the Night)\, Zoe Boesen (Abigail’s Party)\, Brigid Gallacher (In The Club)\, and John Marc Desengano (Looking for Alibrandi)\, this is Little Ones Theatre’s final celebration of all things ridiculous. \nIt’s time to laugh and get your fangs out. \nReviews for Psycho Beach Party:  \n★★★★★ “Sharp as a wet towel snap and very salty indeed”\nTime Out Melbourne \n★★★★★ “A perfect dollop of summertime silliness”\nTime Out Sydney \n★★★★1/2 ” Psycho Beach Party is an absolute cack. Hi-lar-ious. What fun… Its the funniest show around!”\nThe Age \n★★★★ “Perceptive\, bold and sharp”\nThe Guardian \n★★★★ “This is one show that pulls all the cheesy hallmarks of the genre into a blender\, sets it to high\, leaves the lid off\, and presses go\, letting the results splatter deliciously over the audience”\nBrisbane Times[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1480a-4c66″][vc_column_text]Director: Stephen Nicolazzo \nWriter: Charles Busch \nCast: Jennifer Vuletic\, Artemis Ioannides\, Ash Flanders\, Zoe Boesen\, Brigid Gallacher\, Tom Dent and John Marc Desengano\, with Marko Pecer\, Jasmin Larranaga\, Anastacia Barres\, and Jackie Van LieRop \nMovement Director: Ash Pike \nSet and Costume Designer: Nathan Burmeister \nLighting Designer: Katie Sfetkidis \nLighting Associate: Spencer Herd \nSound Designer and Composer: Daniel Nixon and Danni Esposito \nStage Manager: Harry Dowling \nAssistant Stage Manager: Finn McLeish[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1480a-4c66″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35 \nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nCabaret table for four: $220 ($55 per person) \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE for MASTERCARD or VISA payments[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Believing the land and himself damned\, the challenges of drought and the dark reaches of his own mind force an ultimate tragic act in an act of spite against the spectre that haunts him. \nIt’s a journey of outer and inner reflections\, exploring the fragmenting of mind and sanity during times of adversity\, when hopes and dreams transgress into nightmares.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Artist Statement \n“Through combining writing and photography I seek to shed light on mystery sensations we experience in certain spaces. Gut feelings\, a sixth sense\, ethereal sensations\, a shiver down the spine. What makes spaces magical? Foreboding? Beautiful? Remiss? Via the lens I hunt cracks in the doorways of life which provide a glimpse of what’s beyond and approximate hidden truths I see through written word.\nBuilding upon this with an extensive background in experiential reality technologies\, I look to transform exhibitions into immersive environments that reflect sentiments of the captured spaces and build abstract layers that complement the core narrative theme.” \n– Darren Vukasinovic[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1699496780202-fca67672-e3cf”][vc_column_text]Beyond Mind’s Shadow \nFriday 8th December\n5:30pm – 8:00pm\nLarge and Small Gallery\nTheatre \nFree Entry\, Optional Donation\nBooking Required\, Limited Spots Available (see link: https://events.humanitix.com/beyond-mind-s-shadow)\nBeverages Provided \nJoin us on Friday 8th December from 5:30pm – 8pm for an evening at fortyfivedownstairs alongside the immersive exhibition “The House That Jack Built”. Building on the themes in the poetic narrative of the exhibition itself\, the event will feature poetry\, music and dialogue centric to themes of mental health\, loneliness and isolation. \nThe talented DJ Jasmine Speers (@jasmine_speers_music) will kick off the night from 5:30pm performing a set inspired by the dark and isolated themes of the exhibition itself. I’ll then host from 6:15pm starting with shedding light on my inspiration behind the installation\, and am super excited to share some new original pieces written especially for the night. \nSinger/songwriter Dan Cully (@dancully_music) will be performing a range of originals and covers on themes of isolation and hope\, and you’ll hear original spoken word poetry\, prose and perspectives from inspirational local writers Neha Kumar (@artfulyoga.gallery) and Harjyot Kaur (@hotgglue)\, with DJ Jasmine also taking the mic to share some original poetry of her own. \nTo wrap out the evening personal development coach Sam Berry (@earthsamlove) is joining us to share insights on mental health\, and useful tools and resources to identify and deal with our struggles. \nFREE entry (optional donation) with limited tickets available. Hugely grateful to the talented artists who’ve come together to help curate this event\, and to those coming and showing their support for the themes and artists. \nWe hope to see you there x[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

They are part of a patriarchal enforcement system\, reinstating a hierarchy that is entrenched in conceptions of motherhood\, in limited gender roles\, in traditional marriage and in the right to participate in the shaping of society. \n“Of Dingoes and Witch-Hunts” is inspired by familiar stories of Australian women and their journey to equality; powerful metaphors of suppression\, persecution and an evolving struggle that speaks to our history\, our culture and values. \nIn a series of figurative paintings depicting themes of persecution\, exile and misogyny\, the artist draws on historical references to witch-hunting – as well as contemporary Australian stories – to illuminate the persistence of the witch-hunt in its modern-day incarnation. \n-Sharon Monagle\, Artist Statement[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]SHARON MONAGLE // Artist CV \n“Through art I hope to explore\, understand and empathise with the human experience: our reactions to self\, to others and to the world around us”. \nEXHIBITIONS AND PRIZES \n2023\nGroup Exhibition\, Unframed Art\, Mornington \n2022\nGroup Exhibition\, Somers Art Fair\, Somers Vic\nPeninsula Studio Trail Group Exhibition\, The Studio\, Mornington Vic\nFinalist Southern Buoy Studios Portrait Prize Mornington Vic\nSummer Series Group Exhibition 26 Advantage\, Highett Vic \n2021\nFinalist Bluethumb Art Prize\nFinalist Southern Buoy Studios Portrait Prize\nCelebration of Life\, E + Hive\, Collingwood Vic\nWinter’s Light\, Group exhibition\, 26Advantage\, Highett Vic\n2020 Shelter in Place\, Solo exhibition G3Artspace Parkdale Vic\nLes Femmes\, Group exhibition\, THE SPACE Gallery\, Rosebery NSW \n2020\nFinalist Space2be Heads High Portrait prize\nFinalist\, Southern Buoy Studios Landscape Prize\nGroup exhibition\, The Portsea Gallery\, Portsea Vic\nHeads High Portrait show\, Space2b Gallery\, St Kilda Vic\nLinden Postcard show\, Linden New Art Gallery\, St Kilda Vic\n“International Women’s Day Group Exhibition”\, WHO Gallery Malvern Vic\n“Balancing Act”\, No Vacancy Gallery\, Melbourne Vic \n2019\nFinalist\, Southern Buoy Studios Portrait Prize\nSelected to interview with Artbank Roadshow\, Canberra ACT\n“Bayside Studio of Art Group Exhibition\,” Mulbury Gallery Highett Vic\n“Bodies: Paint\, poetry and form”\, Mulbury Gallery Highett Vic\n“Women\, Working and Wandering\,” Group Exhibition\, No Vacancy Gallery\, Melbourne Vic\nSolo exhibition “Falling Women\,” Mulbury Gallery Highett Vic \n2018\nSemi-finalist\, Cambridge Studio Gallery “Who’s looking at you” Portrait prize\nSemi-finalist\, Cambridge Studio Gallery “Life Abstracted” Abstract art prize\nDenis Diderot Artist-in-Residence Grant\, Chateau d’Orquevaux\, Champagne-Ardenne\, France\nFeatured Artist\, Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Collingwood Vic\n“Women\, Science and Faith”\, Group Exhibition\, No Vacancy Gallery\, Melbourne Vic\n“Diversity\,” Group exhibition Hall and Wilcox\, Melbourne Vic\nSandy Beach Community Art Exhibition\, Sandringham Vic\nGroup exhibition Le Studio Artspace\, Mordialloc Vic \n2017\nSemi-finalist\, Cambridge Studio Gallery “Who’s looking at you” Portrait prize\nSemi-finalist\, Cambridge Studio Gallery “Life Abstracted” Abstract art prize\nSemi-finalist\, Georges River Art Prize\nFinalist and Special Merit Award\, Light Space and Time “Women Only” exhibition\n“Nausea in my arm”\, Solo exhibition\, G3 Art space Parkdale Vic\nGroup Exhibition Le Studio Artspace\, Mordialloc Vic\n“Life Abstracted” abstract art exhibition\, Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Collingwood Vic\nGroup exhibition\, AK Bellinger Gallery\, Inverell NSW\n“At Home”\, Group Exhibition Birds Gallery\, Kew Vic\n“Landscapes Reflected and Represented\,” Group exhibition\, Brunswick St Gallery\, Brunswick Vic\n“Meanderings in Visual Language”: Group Exhibition\, No Vacancy Gallery\, Melbourne Vic\nContemporary Art Society A4 Art Australia Exhibition\, Herring Island Vic\nMESAC Easel art exhibition Beaumaris Vic  \n2016\nRunner up: James and Nicky Humphrey Encouragement award  (Highly Commended) Beaumaris Art Group\n“Who’s looking at you?” Portrait exhibition\, Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Collingwood Vic\nLinden Gallery Postcard show St Kilda Vic\nBeaumaris Art Group members exhibition\, Beaumaris Vic\nThe Belle Arti Art Prize\, Richmond Vic\nGroup exhibition Le Studio Artspace\, Mordialloc Vic \nWEBSITE: sharonmonagleart.com\nInstagram: sharonmonagleart[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1699497295399-baa7a9ef-2787″][vc_column_text]Poetry Reading \nSaturday 11th November\n2:00pm – 4:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nJoin us as Melbourne poets Rose Lucas\, Anne Elvey\, and Angela Costi share work created in response to the exhibition. \nFree Entry\nAll Welcome\nNo Pre-Booking Required\nBeverages Provided[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

On viewing her work\, Ilana appreciated Ashbolt’s intuition for representing movement and it was through the course of the collaboration the pair developed a way of working.  Starting with photographs and memories narrated by Ilana\, Ashbolt studied body language\, positioning of family members and at times considering who might have taken the photo and why.  These discussions offered clues for how each work would evolve – the motivation for each painting developed over time and conversation. \nIlana: “Through this project I learnt to look\, through Dena I learnt to see\, to recognise things in my life I hadn’t noticed before.  The image of Mama and myself at the table – I had always thought I had a bad relationship with my mother – it was only when we painted this image that I could sense the joy we felt for each other. “ \nDena: “Our relationship with time\, and time passing\, is something that underlies pretty much all of my work\, in very diverse contexts\, and this project has allowed me to explore that.  It has been such a magical commission – freedom to interpret stories\, photographs\, moments in time.  To evolve an impression of a person\, place and family.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]\nDr Dena Ashbolt is a perceptual artist whose cinematic drawing technique consistently engages with time\, its flow and passing. The result is a rich\, compelling\, and poignant love story that ponders on the power and preciousness of human connection in a seemingly random universe. \nArtefact Theatre Company’s Matthew Cox directs this beautiful new production starring Mark Yeates (Much Ado About Nothing\, Mr Burns) and Bridie Pamment (The Real Inspector Hound). \nConstellations is set to be a captivating and intimate night of theatre for anybody who’s ever reflected on a love they take for granted\, or one that got away.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f187f6-8326″][vc_column_text]Director: Matthew Cox (he/him) \nCast: Mark Yeates (he/him) and Bridie Pamment (she/her) \nExecutive Producers: Mark Yeates (he/him) & Matthew Cox (he/him) \nProducer: Sarah Cuthbert (she/her) \nGraphic Design + Photography: Ben Andrews (he/they) \nSound Design: Ben Andrews (he/they) \nProduction Design: Sunshine Cooper (she/her) \nProduction Assistant: Georgia Duncan (she/her) \nSocial Media: Teresa Giansiracusa (she/her) \nSet Construction: Nick Runia (he/him) \nLighting Design: Tim Bonser (he/him) \nLighting Operation: Jackson Passlow (they/he) \nVoice & Dialect Coach: Suzanne Heywood \nIntimacy Coordination: Annabelle Tudor (she/her) \nBritish Sign Language Interpreter & Coach: Helen Thomas \nRehearsal Photography: Evangeline Kepler (she/her) \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f187f6-8326″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $30 \nFull: $40\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nPlease note\, a seniors card is not a valid concession for this performance \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Numbering in the thousands and piled up in no particular order\, this is the stuff of nightmares for conservators\, but it suits me. \nLooking back over old work\, the earlier drawings are easy to spot. They are self-consciously “scrawled”\, an affectation I thought was artful and one I sensibly gave up after a short time. \nOther idiosyncrasies jump out. She/her pronouns for any and all persons described\, and the use of one obscenity in particular. Both are a link to the antiquated gay slang language of Polari and more specifically to the foul-mouthed lesbian icon and Soho drinking club proprietress Muriel Belcher – whose name alone should qualify her for celebrity. \nThroughout the drawings\, heroes\, villains\, and victims are name checked or referenced obliquely. Ranging from pop culture staples to totally obscure personal obsessions\, here they’re forced to mingle in what might accurately be described as the cocktail mixer from hell. \nDifferent friendships have inspired different works. The stories and observations my friends share get the James Hale treatment\, usually with enthusiastic approval. \nEven more profound an influence on my work are eavesdropping and plagiarism. Bad habits that have served me in good stead. \nSome works here I had forgotten existed. Others are embarrassingly bad. Others still were too cruel\, disgusting\, or libellous to be included in this exhibition. \nIt’s tempting to compare my work en masse to an avalanche or some other non-specific natural disaster. Perhaps an enormous din\, a thousand voices talking at once\, is more accurate. \nThis makes for\, in my humble opinion\, a perfect viewing experience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]James Hale is a text artist working in Melbourne. Part of the ‘Blue Streak’ program aimed at developing Britain’s military resources into a credible nuclear deterrent threat\, the rockets were loaded with inert 3000 kilotonne warheads. Fast forward to 2023\, and Australians are living in a place and time in which notions of global safety and wellbeing have never been more unstable. \nNear Sighted is an audio-visual installation comprised of six tiny interactive dioramas. Presented as a contemporary re-imagining of the ‘toy theatres’ of the nineteenth century\, the dioramas are sound-based works constructed with miniature painted watercolour cut-outs and lit from within. \nThis project marks a major shift in form for Kate Hunter\, after a number of years working in live performance. Near Sighted is a multi-modal experiment which disrupts ways of describing\, encountering\, manipulating\, and mediating performance ‘texts’ through a combination of theatre-making and devising practices\, sound and audio recording\, digital voice modulation\, writing and visual art processes. \nIt is also a personal story which draws on the artist’s father’s experience as an aeronautical engineer in the early days of rocket design to examine our relationship to place\, our collective imagination\, and our post-war identity in the face of multiple existential threats.   \nKate Hunter // Artist Statement \nCreatives\nConcept\, creation\, construction – Kate Hunter\nVoice – Josephine Lange\nDramaturge – Emilie Collyer\nComputer processing – Jem Savage\nAdditional coding – Benjamin Savage\nAudio mixing and mastering; publicity images – Leo Dale[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kate Hunter is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance\, improvisation\, painting\, and sound. Jemima’s aim is to spark conversations about body acceptance and provide fat people a chance to see their bodies represented in a fine art capacity. Painting these figures is extremely relevant as fatphobia is ever present in society. There is constant discrimination to deal with when you are fat hence Jemima is regaining control over the perception of the naked body. They create an accepting space for women and non binary folk to feel not only comfortable but also celebrated. \nJemima Longworth // Artist Statement[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

During 2020\, a confluence of critical personal events motivated me to re-evaluate how I saw myself as an individual\, the identifications that others projected upon me\, and my relationship with others in Australian society. Guided by the photo therapy framework of Jo Spence and Rosy Martin\, in conjunction with a material engagement informed by Karen Barad’s agential realism\, I approached this self-reflection by engaging with a diverse range of photograph-centred practices throughout 2021 and 2022. Parental and institutional erasures of diasporic heritage\, and its replacement with the values of Australian middle-class suburbia and professional status\, were critically examined through this multimodal approach. \nI began work on this project with preconceived ideas about recovering some form of lost Hong Kong-Chinese heritage – or perhaps reconnecting with a forgotten community that I was separated from during our family’s diasporic trajectory. What emerged through this work eventually revealed my own identity(ies) and cultural position(s) to be more complex\, nuanced\, and unexpected. \nKelvin Lau // Artist Statement[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]\nKelvin Lau / Lau Wing Kei CV\nLast updated: May 2023 \nEducation\n2023 MA (Photography)\, Photography Studies College\n2017 PhD\, University of Melbourne\n2013 MPH\, University of Melbourne\n2006 FRACGP\, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners\n1997 BSc(Med) MB BS\, University of New South Wales \nSolo exhibitions\n2023 Painted Ghosts\, Sol Gallery\, Melbourne \nGroup exhibitions\n2023 Through Time and Space\, Museum of Chinese Australian History\, Melbourne\n2021 STAGES Life in Lockdown\, Monash Gallery of Art\, Melbourne\n2020 Bowness Photography Prize\, Monash Gallery of Art\, Melbourne\n2014-2020 Salon\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Melbourne\n1991 ArtExpress (1990)\, Art Gallery of New South Wales \nAwards\, grants\, residencies\n2023 Creative Residency\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Melbourne\n2021 Finalist\, Australian Photography Awards\n2020 Finalist\, Bowness Photography Prize\, Monash Gallery of Art\, Melbourne \nCollaborations\n2022 Consultant\, Unknowing Madness project by Thembi Soddell for The Big Anxiety Festival\, Melbourne\n2016 Co-facilitator\, Exploring Emotion Through Photography\, youth program with headspace Collingwood\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, and ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions \nPublications\n2017 Understanding mental distress in young people from a migrant background in Australia through photo-interviewing\, open access thesis\, University of Melbourne \nDeclared fields of interest\nReflexive photographic practice\nAutoethnography\nQualitative research methods\nVisual social research\nArts/health\nHealth/illness lived experience\nPrimary healthcare[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

If Myra had been Tereshkova\, she would not have lived her life moving in marital paralysis\, parenting her children and being the woman perennially behind the man. If Myra had been Tereshkova\, her children would respect her and not dismiss her for being a feminist traitor and doormat. If Myra had been Tereshkova\, she would have realised that little girl who showed the boys how things were done. Myra in Space tells the tragi-comic story of Myra Foreman\, a woman who missed her life on earth and is now going to live it\, in space. \nImage by Darren Gill \nSupported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d8e1-f6f9″][vc_column_text]Writer: Bridgette Burton \nDirector: Alice Bishop \nCast: Kelly Nash (Myra)\, Greg Parker (Bruce)\, Annie Lumsden (Valli)\, Nicholas Jaquinot (Phillip)\, and Rama Nicholas (Valentina Tereshkova) \nSet & Costume Designer: Silvia Shao \nLighting Designer: Richard Vabre \nSound Designer: Nat Grant \nProducers: Bridgette Burton and Christina Costigan of Baggage Productions[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d8e1-f6f9″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35 \nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \n*Please note\, a seniors card is not a valid concession for this performance \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

This collection not only celebrates their artistic achievements but also sheds light on the positive impact their artistic practice has had and continues to have on their lives. \n“The path isn’t always straight but you get to your destination in the end” \nIn this exhibition\, you will encounter a rich spectrum of artistic styles and mediums\, each mirroring the students’ distinct experiences and voices. As you explore the gallery\, you’ll encounter artworks that offer a unique insight into the worlds these students inhabit. These worlds are often silent\, but the meaning embedded in each artwork speaks volumes about resilience\, identity\, challenges\, and aspirations. \n“Our Worlds\, Our Words” is a celebration of the courage it takes to transform personal stories into visual narratives. From the intricacy of a finely detailed pencil sketch to the boldness of a sweeping acrylic stroke\, every piece tells a story – a story of growth\, of self-discovery\, and of the infinite possibilities that lie within creativity. \n“The blends I use in my landscapes move from dark to light to create a sense of moving forwards” \nArt is more than just colors on a canvas or shapes on paper; it is a lifeline and a sanctuary\, through which these students navigate the complexities of their worlds. In a society where words might often fail to capture the depth of feelings or experiences\, these young artists have discovered that their practice provides a safe haven for their thoughts and self-efficacy to take shape. \n“Our Worlds\, Our Words” not only invites you to witness the students’ creative prowess but also to understand the pivotal role that art plays in these young people’s lives. Through art\, these students have discovered a means to communicate their stories\, their dreams\, and their aspirations. \n“I want the audience to feel relaxed and intrigued by my art” \nAs you wander the gallery\, take a moment to reflect on what art signifies for these students. It is a tool for self-discovery\, a channel for building self-esteem\, and a vehicle for transcending barriers. The artworks speak not only of challenges faced and conquered but also of the immense capacity within each individual to transform pain into beauty and vulnerability into strength.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”About Parkville College” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Parkville College is a specialist Victorian Government School that provides education to students who are\, or have been\, detained in custody\, a secure care setting\, or transitioning from these settings. Working in collaboration with the Department of Justice and Community Safety and the Department of Families\, Fairness and Housing\, we deliver education across five diverse campuses throughout Victoria. \nParkville College operates 52 weeks a year and caters to some of the most vulnerable students in the state.  Providing education to students with diverse learning goals\, and abilities\, Parkville College individually tailors education to the student to give them the greatest successes. \nStudents become enrolled if they are detained in a Youth Justice Centre or a Secure Care Service (SCS) within Victoria. While enrolment numbers fluctuate daily\, the school typically provides education to around 300 students on any given day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He has further expanded his craft with the introduction of organic textured materials such as stitched canvas coffee bags\, fabric\, rope\, cardboard incorporated into rich layers of pigmented wax\, the ancient encaustic technique. \nIn 2019 Michelangelo collaborated with artist Jennifer Jabu exploring themes of sustainability with the use of all natural materials. These hung artworks are textural\, jutting from the surface\, their multidimensionality referencing architectural relief. The exhibition also includes examples of three-dimensional sculptural works in a rich array of pure solid colours enveloped by the encaustic technique. \n-Mariella DelConte\, Curator[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Michelangelo Russo was born in 1962\, Campobasso\, Italy. Michelangelo started painting at the age of 12\, he had his first solo exhibition in 1977. After studying architecture and graphic design in Pescara and Rome he relocated to Berlin in early 1990 where he lived for 4 years before moving to Melbourne Australia in 1994. During his career Michelangelo had several solo and group shows in Italy\, Germany\, Cuba and Australia. Michelangelo has had a lifelong interest not only in painting but also music.  Since 1979 he has played in several bands in Italy\, Germany and Australia. He has toured Europe playing concerts and experimental music festivals\, and has appeared on several seminal recordings. Since 1994 he collaborated widely with musician/songwriter/producer Hugo Race\, and composers/musicians Wendy Morrison and Andrew Ogburn amongst others\, appearing in many projects\, recordings and performances.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Jemima’s aim is to spark conversations about body acceptance and provide fat people a chance to see their bodies represented in a fine art capacity. Painting these figures is extremely relevant as fatphobia is ever present in society. There is constant discrimination to deal with when you are fat. Hence\, Jemima is regaining control over the perception of the naked body. They create an accepting space for women and non binary folk to feel not only comfortable but also celebrated.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Artist’s bio[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

It is a continuation and exploration of my past artistic themes and metaphors including the cocoon\, elephant\, and gorilla. My work always concerns the seeking and creation of safe spaces and is motivated by pleas to look after each other and to protect nature in the great unravelling that seems to be the current state of the world. \nSince my 2021 solo exhibition\, Making Nonsense\, the world has continued its crazy upside-down trajectory. At a time when the world should have been coming together to combat climate change\, turmoil continued with rampant political upheaval\, the effects of Covid 19\, human rights violations and in February 2022\, the invasion of Ukraine by an unhinged Russian dictator. \nMy response then became an all-consuming social project\, the #sunflowerquiltforukraine\, forged in a spirit of solidarity\, love\, and hope. Designed to be wrapped\, draped\, or laid out Christo-style. It can inhabit various settings and means different things in each. It is both a cover for sites of atrocities and a symbol of comfort\, safety and the capacity of people to come together\, replying to the effects of war and destruction with something creative\, hand-made and often deeply personal. In July 2022\, I flew the quilt to London\, and together with Ukrainian refugees\, exhibited it all over the UK\, including 10 Downing Street\, the Albert Hall\, Tate Modern\, Hyde- and St James Park\, on the banks of the Thames and in Sussex farmland. It was used in performances and installations and for recitals. In the Albert Hall our quilt was part of the BBC Proms event\, displayed in a giant prayer-circle with the Ukrainian freedom orchestra. \nWhile it has been uplifting\, hopeful and inspiring\, it has simultaneously been an experience full of sadness\, pain\, conflict and chaos. Unsprung is a response to\, and an escape from the latter\, a document underpinned by the unravelling of the world and myself. My daily exposure to the effects of war have\, despite my best intentions\, bled into my daily life\, as a carer for my son with autism\, and as a wife with an often-absent partner. \nUnsprung is a defiant celebration that seeks to offset the grinding force and horrors of conflict\, though I chose spring as a deliberately ambiguous metaphor. Oscillating between recognizable floral motifs\, abstraction\, simple shapes\, and more complex decorative layering\, vibrant colour dances in gestural strokes. Tangible threads combine with invisible stories of loneliness\, hope lost and found. Paintings are massive or tiny\, stretched and unstretched\, to suggest something innocent yet ‘unsprung’. \nBy 2023 the #sunflowerquiltforukraine installation was over 250 long. We are continuing to sew today with the aim of doubling our 250m installation. \nArtist Statement by Janno McLaughlin and edited by Rose Lang \nPhotographs by Simon Strong[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Graduating with a Masters of Contemporary Art from Victoria College of Arts\, Melbourne University in 2018\, Janno has spent most of her time prior\, living between New York and Buenos Aires\, Argentina. Janno’s artworks seek to sow hope\, bravery\, love\, optimism\, resilience\, and whimsy; -anchored by a deliberately ridiculous and unwavering sense of humour. Her approach is unapologetically bold with a preference for blazing colour and mixed media. Janno deploys paint\, thread and richly associative metaphors to portray the most vulnerable\, fragile and endangered in society. In her ten solo exhibitions\, Janno has explored the theme of outsider; the foreigner living in a non-English speaking world; the disenfranchised urban poor; and closer to home and as the mother of a child with autism\, the isolation of disability and need for safe spaces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1691639761237-627ed375-a8a1″][vc_column_text]Opening Night \nThursday 10 August 2023 \n5pm – 7pm \nfortyfivedownstairs \n  \nArtist Talk \nSaturday 12 August 2023 \n1pm – 3pm \nfortyfivedownstairs[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
