With this series of oversized paintings – I imagine them to be as one whole artwork that is broken into a series of smaller (though still very large) paintings. \nWhen I plan and execute the work I document and lay them together – so the ideas and direction make sense to me. They then begin to tell a story. The works to me are a part of a larger milieu\, that I want the viewer to become ensconced within. \nI have always had a strong connection to literature. The titles for the works will often come from books or papers that I am currently reading. Time then spent researching and gathering ideas which help me form a feeling that I’ll maintain throughout the creation of the whole body of work. Once I have reached a certain point in my own research process – I have an enduring thought or feeling that stays with me while I paint several works. I paint until the urgency of this thought or feeling subsides\, then\, I’ll return to my reading and research process – and with this the cycle continues. \nWhen the works are finished\, I stand the works together and edit them back to a core of paintings that do not deviate from the central feeling I have maintained throughout the painting process. \nThe work is very much a diary of movement through thought and feeling\, and then revisiting of the idea of my purpose. In the past few years\, I have concentrated on paring back\, ensuring that the work is about the work itself\, the simplicity of practicing acts of love and the physicality of being in the studio every day. \nVisually I have intended for this body of work is joyful\, graphic\, strong\, confident. Dots\, stripes and virulent swirls. I want each painting to look like the palette of the work I had painted right before; for an assured viewer\, ready to embrace correlation and chance with shapes and colours\, someone ready to revel in a sense of abundance\, emotion and love.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Shayle Flesser \nEducation\n2004 Post-Graduate Diploma of Visual Art – Griffith University\, Queensland\n1996 Diploma of Psychology and Sociology – City College\, San Francisco\n1992 Bachelor of Visual Art (Painting & Ceramics) University of Southern Queensland\, Toowoomba \nIndividual Exhibitions\n2022- Launch – Emma Street Studio Gallery\n2021 – Emma Street Studio Gallery\n2017- Artworks Upstairs Gallery\n2013 – Platform – Jan Manton Gallery\n2012 –Doggett Street Studio\, Brisbane\n2012 – New Skin Tween driver Regional Gallery\n2008 Immaculate Heart – blkmrkt project space\, Queensland\n2008 – blkmrkt projects\, Southport \nGroup Exhibitions:\n2016 – Jan Manton Gallery\n2014 – Conny Dietzschold Gallery\n2014 – Jan Manton Gallery\n2013 – Group Show – Jan Manton Gallery\n2012 – Los Angeles Affordable Art Fair\n2012 – Toronto Affordable art Fair\n2011 – Prometheus Visual Art Award – All Saints Anglican School\, Merrimac\n2014 – Conny Dietzschold Gallery\n2014 – Jan Manton Gallery\n2013 – Group Show – Jan Manton Gallery\n2010 – Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award – Grafton Regional Gallery\, Grafton\n2010 – Drawings From Where We Are – Horus & Deloris Art Space\, Sydney\n2009 The Fourth Estate – Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery\, Queensland\n2009 Innocence – Lorraine Pilgrim Gallery\, Queensland\n2009 Eat your Heart Out – blkmrkt project space\, Queensland\n2008 Memento Mori – blkmrkt project space\, Queensland (Curated by Wayde Owen)\n2007 Taking Sides – blkmrkt project space\, Queensland\n2007 Put your Love on the Line – blkmrkt project space\, Queensland\n2004 Works for the Blues – Waterfront Place\, Brisbane\n2003 Mapping the Journey – Artworks Contemporary Artspace\, Queensland\n2002 Miniatures – Artworks Contemporary Artspace\, Queensland\n2002 Works for the Blues – Waterfront Place\, Brisbane\n2002 The Trinity Lutheran Art Award\, Trinity Lutheran College\, Queensland (Winner)\n2002 Marymount Art Award – Marymount College\, Queensland\n2002 New Paintings – Artworks Contemporary Artspace\, Queensland\n1993 Multiple Visions (Graduate show) – University of Southern Queensland\, Toowoomba\nAwards and Grants and Residencies:\n2011 – Prometheus Visual Art Award – All Saints Anglican School\, Merrimac\n2010 – Jacaranda Aquisitive Drawing Award – Grafton Regional Gallery\, Grafton\n2009 – Hill End Artists in Residence Program\n2008 – Arts Queensland\, Regional Arts Development Fund (New Work Grant)\n2008 – Arts Queensland\, Regional Arts Development Fund (blkmrkt projects)\n2007 – Prometheus Visual Art Award – All Saints Anglican School\, Merrimac\n2006 – Cite Internationale Des Arts – Paris\, France (AGNSW Studio)\n2008 Arts Queensland\, Regional Arts Development Fund (blkmrkt project space)\n2002 The Westpac Painting Award\, Trinity Lutheran College (Winner) \nCollections\nGold Coast City Art Gallery\, Queensland\nTrinity Lutheran College\, Queensland\nPrivate Collections Australia and New Zealand\, Singapore\, Hong Kong \nBibliography\nGold Coast Bullterin – May 2021\nGina Ciancio – Style Curator 2021\nSam Leach – Catalogue Essay 2012\nClarke\, S. 2008. It’s midnight in Cambridge\, and Rosalind Brixton is awoken by the footsteps of three young men on her roof. They are the Night Climbers\, a secret society that gathers on the rooftops long after they should be in bed. Hungry for adventure\, Rosalind is quickly initiated into this night-time world of clandestine oaths\, cleverness\, politics\, and sex. But when this Bohemian new world is shattered by a horrific betrayal\, she must choose between keeping quiet and seeking revenge. \nClimbers is a powerful and poignant exploration of the barriers women face in traditionally male institutions\, and the strength\, courage\, and solidarity it takes to dismantle them. \nPhotos by Harrison Baker[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f18d97-066d”][vc_column_text]\nWriter: Elly D’Arcy\n\nDirector: Monique Marani\n\nCast: Meg Taranto\, Veronica Pena Negrette\, Eddie Orton\, Sebastian Li\, Charlie Veitch\, Tyallah Bullock\, Tahlia Jameson\, Lotte Beckett\, Vitoria Hronopoulous\, Milijana Cancar\, and Chris Broadstock\n\nProducer & Production Manager: Harry Dowling\n\nSound Designer: Justin Gardam\n\nSet & Costume Designer: Savanna Wegman\n\nLighting Designer: Georgie Wolfe\n\nStage Manager: Kelly Wilson\n\nAssistant Stage Manager: Karen Ng\n\n\nIntimacy Coordinator: Isabella Vadiveloo\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f18d97-066d”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $30\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

It is an attempt to capture the feeling of standing at the base of a mountain\, and feeling the presence of what our guide told us were the spirits of the mountains. Standing beneath their cold\, unyielding majesty\, it is hard to disagree that the mountains are indeed alive. \nAs an artist\, I wanted to capture the feeling of awe I felt when I first saw Machapuchare\, or Fishtail\, a mountain that is forbidden to climb and looms large over the Annapurna circuit. The sharp intake of breath\, followed by my eyes scanning\, focusing and readjusting repeatedly as I found more detail\, more mystery and more inspiration is a feeling I will chase for the rest of my life. \nTo create these works\, I’ve employed my entire skillset as a generative artist. \nI created a photorealistic simulation of the Himalayas\, including erosion\, sediment and debris. Once I was satisfied with the base terrain\, I scattered particles on the terrain and started to give them life and movement\, being careful not to lose the integrity of the mountains I was inspired by\, but also trying to reflect the feeling and spirit of what I saw\, not just a literal representation. \nIf I manage to capture a fraction of the awe I felt myself in Nepal\, then I’ve succeeded as an artist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kyle Minors is a generative 3D artist whose work is deeply inspired by the patterns and forms found in the natural world. Drawing inspiration from the stunning landscapes and patterns in the world around him\, he creates mesmerizing digital art that captures the beauty and complexity of nature. \nUsing algorithmic processes and generative techniques\, Minors explores the intricate patterns and shapes that emerge from natural phenomena like the flow of water\, the growth of plants\, and the cold majesty of mountains. \nThe result is a breathtaking collection of works that offer a unique perspective on the natural world. \nWith a keen eye for detail and a passion for innovation\, Minors pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in generative art. His work invites viewers to contemplate the mysteries of nature\, and to appreciate the stunning beauty that surrounds us every day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A forceful drive arose in me at that time; an urgency to express all of the tensions and fantasies that unfolded in the aligning of myself more closely with the natural elements. In more recent works however\, such observed fragments are becoming subtly unmoored and detached from their original environment\, creating new visual narratives of a more uncertain nature. \nAs a result of several moves during the pandemic\, internal layers of difficulty emerged. Despite this discomfort\, I was deeply inspired by the rich colours and the tangible spiritual presence of Northern Territory landscapes. I was grappling with the unresolved impact of colonial invasion impacting Alice Springs\, particularly as I sought to understand more deeply the magnificence of land and its inhabitants of over 65\,000 years. Integrating my inspiration and awe for aboriginal culture and their historical reverence for land with the daily challenges that arose generated conflicting feelings. I began reflecting on the Baroque period as I felt my work aligned with this period’s dramatic illuminations of beauty\, gloom\, uncertain emotions and mystery. My own works became disorientating and abstract; destabilising the viewer in subtle ways by skewing shadows\, light & dark orientations\, foliage and scale; encouraging reflection on one’s internal terrain. Formal qualities and times of day are disparate\, sometimes visually cacophonous. The light can be unsettling and worlds collide creating schisms to the eye. \nIn relating closely to the term ‘Barocco’ meaning disfigured or oddly shaped pearl\, I feel that so long as we are living\, mortal beings\, the openings to inspire us closer into who we are\, may require the light’s counterpart of darkness to never desist. \nI would like to give thanks to those involved in the physical theatre piece created for opening night\, including Sophie Thompson and Dean West for joining me in creating Orison’s physical theatre piece. I would also like to thank Matty Vehl for his glorious voice in my song ‘We Ran Forever’ used for soundtrack\, Mischa Baka for producing and editing the sound and supporting me throughout all of my art creations. I would also like to thank Cleis Pearce for her magical spell binding soundtrack ‘Always’. I am grateful to all of my gorgeous friends who have supported me and my art and Lastly I would like to thank Tessa and the team at fortyfivedownstairs for making Orison possible\, and Otomys for representing me and my work. \nTo view Rebekah’s dance works relating to this current exhibition\, click the following links. \nPerpetual \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJGay8C8BoE \nAlways\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHJr2rhkdmA[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Melbourne-based contemporary artist Rebekah Stuart studied at The University of Melbourne (VCA) 1994 – 1997. Using photography as a tool she  reconstructs fragments of nature to develop fantastical landscapes that don’t exist in the real world. Rebekah explores alternative aesthetics to that which our eyes see in day-to-day life. This process allows her to push the boundaries of the imagination and blur the lines of reality and the otherworldliness which characterises her work. \nA more in-depth inspection of Rebekah’s photography reveals a deeper story; one which changes over extended periods of time\, as new elements become apparent and others grow distant to make way for new realisations. \n‘My images evolve in a similar fashion to that of a painter\, over a long duration.  \nThe fragments are built and refined so a new whole emerges\, disorienting the observer in a subtle way to reflect on their internal terrain. The landscapes reflect the horizons within – an intimate sublime for a time when wilderness is perhaps uninhabitable’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Some of these artworks are created without specific references\, while others are inspired by poses crafted with the help of live models. A few pieces take on an abstract style\, incorporating representational elements to establish a deep psychological connection with the subject’s pose and their innermost\, private movements. \nThese paintings aim to capture personal and private states\, reminding viewers of the joy and significance found in expressive human movement and the accompanying psychological experience. \nIn recent years\, I’ve embarked on a journey of rediscovery in my artistic process. Drawing from my previous experience\, I sought to reinvent myself while embracing artistic growth. This led me to engage with performance artists from different parts of the world\, forming creative relationships that influenced the direction of my work. This shift allowed me to explore new themes and approaches. \nPrimavera\, named after the season of spring\, represents both the darkness and coldness as well as the promise of warmth and sunlight. As an artist\, I believe in the importance of describing the world using various stylistic methods\, even if it means venturing beyond my comfort zone and challenging my understanding. I resist the limitations of predefined ideas or singular moments. \nBy experimenting with different compositions\, I manipulate abstract elements such as light and colour to incorporate both representational and nonrepresentational aspects in each piece. This guides the viewer into the essence of the chosen pose and establishes a connection. Through collaboration with subjects\, studio photography\, and drawings\, I bring together the materials and forms\, creating a unified theme. I work primarily with oil paint to capture the tactile quality of skin\, while drawing inspiration from various sources to play with the element of light in my paintings. \nApproaching figure and expression from an abstract perspective\, I aim to present the subject matter in a fresh and unfamiliar visual treatment\, inviting viewers to perceive it in new and compelling ways.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]John Mezzini’s CV \nExhibitions \n1994                      Graduates Exhibition group exhibition \n2019                       45 Downstairs solo “E lascia dir le genti” \n2019                       Art Basel Switzerland top 100 artworks “Ad Apicem” \n2019                       Art Box Miami \n2019                      Emerge Brunswick st Gallery – group exhibition \n2021                      45 Downstairs solo “mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um” Postponed to January 2022 \n2021                      Primo Red group Exhibition – C&H gallery \n2021                      Here again 45 Downstairs online group exhibition \n2021                      Aliorum portrait Exhibition – POME gallery \n2022                       45 Downstairs solo “Monumentum” \n2022                       RED Exhibition – POME gallery \nMedia \nMay 2019 Sunday Age – Art Sunday promotion solo exhibition “ELascia dir le Genti” \nApril 2019 Art Almanac promotion “ELascia dir le Genti” \nJune 2019 News fox Switzerland Australian Artist Awarded “Ad Apicem” \nNovember 2019 Penthouse Magazine online – Print Feb 2020 “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2020 Recorder south Australia “artist roller coaster” \nJanuary 2022 Penthouse Magazine online “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2022 Last post Magazine “Artist John Mezzini” \nSocials \nFacebook: johnmezzinart \nInstagram: jmezz1974[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Memory\, myth\, record and place are all woven together and filled with knowledge about how and why things are\, were and will be. \nWe inherit stories older than recorded time. These orient us in the world and connect us as the next link in an unbroken and unending chain of survival and connection to this place. These stories guide us how to be and to see the inherent value in Country and what it nurtures and provides. \nThis exhibition looks at two fundamental parts of the intergenerational oral history tradition. For a story to survive over time and distance it must have gravitas to these who retell it. So what were old ones trying to tell us when we look at their stories or records or embellished memory? And knowing we are the next link in the chain\, how do we record story\, memory\, narrative for our decedents so that it will stand the test of time? \nThe Head – The Family\, holds\, gives\, hugs and receives \nCulture and understanding is shaped by the collective. Especially in our cultures. Knowledge is itself sacred. And the holding\, keeping\, protecting and sharing of knowledge and culture and history is both simultaneously a personal and collective responsibility. Several members of the broader Walsh\, Hamilton and Morphy families show some of their favourite stationary but moving piece\, from the moment of conception documented in grass to the overlaying of knowledge and symbols once removed from Country through colonisation now returning. \nThe Body – I give\, hold\, hug and receive \nIsobel Morphy-Walsh’s work explores the notions of Creation in two distinct ways. The first being to examine Biik (Bountry) and the creation of the landscape and thus the environment and culture that is infused into her bones and being. The second is through stationary object and image directly examining creation story and law. \nThis gallery show was commissioned by Yirramboi Festival and has received funding and support from Yirramboi Festival\, City of Melbourne and Creative Victoria through the Creative Projects Fund. \nTo read more about or book tickets to Isobel’s theatrical performances – please visit the performance page. \n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Isobel Morphy-Walsh\, a proud Nirim Baluk woman from the Taun Wurrung (Taungurung) people. Having not seen each other for five years\, the two complete opposites navigate the inextricable tension that permeates between them. The sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic father clash violently over a film script and the notion of what the West means. A brutal stand-off ensues. Perhaps they are not as different as they seem. \nThrough this dark comedy\, Shepard deeply explores the psyche through sibling rivalry\, revealing its double nature. Impressed by the card’s evocative nostalgia and intimacy\, they were\, according to Luccio\, “beautiful artefacts\, remnants of the past preserved in small and fragile time capsules”. That sentiment was reflected in Luccio’s wonderful collection of small-scale works\, New York Postcards (2019). In Cuorosensa we see an evolution into something much larger in scale\, both in size and substance. \nIn Cuorosensa\, the artist’s bold\, energetic and confident mark-making coheres into recognisable Luccio-esque themes — we see his Eiffel Tower\, his Trojan Horse\, his meditations on the myths and figures of classical antiquity — but closer inspection reveals a canvas of interlocking postcards with tantalising glimpses of the messages they once conveyed. When their contents are obscured completely by Luccio’s paint and ink\, the postcards form something of an edifice\, brick-like in their arrangement\, transformed from something fragile to bedrock. \nArchaeologists are known for digging down to gain insight into the daily lives of individuals who once constituted whole civilisations; in Cuorosensa this is reversed. Here the presumptive ephemera of material culture becomes the base upon which layers of bigger and vaster gestures are built. We see the expansive concept of civilisation layered over the intimate concept of community\, and it is unexpectedly coherent. Perhaps these small acts of practical sentimentality are what is really hidden in the Trojan Horse. What really propels the march of history\, of destruction and creation? Perhaps the idea of a blank canvas is its own myth\, an attempt to obliterate the foundation of community in favour of the fiction of self-contained individuality. \nCuorosensa: A Reverse Archaeology delivers a cracking blow to concepts we like to contain within neat boundaries. Even the exhibition’s title plays with these themes: cuorosensa— a fanciful word fashioned to slide off the tongue and evoke its Latin roots of heart and feeling—combined with the conjuring up of a discipline; a regime of serious study\, fired by applied curiosity. \nAs we move through a period of global upheaval\, there has never been a better time to explore the themes presented in Luccio’s Cuorosensa: A Reverse Archaeology. These works leave us contemplating what will become of our own heartfelt acts\, if only we take the time and energy to produce them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1676079125859-f3fccc2a-ed2a”][vc_column_text]CUOROSENSA\nA Reverse Archaeology \nOpening Event\nTo be opened by David Hunt\nTuesday 4 April from 5pm – 7pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nArtist Talk: The Making of Cuorosensa\nSaturday 15 of April from 2pm – 3pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nArt\, Health and Happiness\nA panel discussion hosted by David Hunt\nSaturday 22nd of April from 2 – 3pm\nFREE EVENT: RSVP essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nDrawing Sessions with the Artist\nFor the Love of Laneways: sketching in and around the laneways of Melbourne\nThursday 20 April from 11am – 1pm followed by a tour of the exhibition\n$100 per person\, email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or call 03 9662 9966 to book \nSoaring Cityscapes: sketching the built environment\nThursday 27 April from 11am – 1pm followed by a tour of the exhibition\n$100 per person\, email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or call 03 9662 9966 to book \nSketching for Sanity: How Drawing Can Improve Your Life\nSaturday 29 April from 10:30am – 12pm\n1.5 hour blitz with Marco Luccio on how to draw for pleasure for non-drawers\nFREE: RSVPs essential to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1676522419739-aba1c5c5-27b2″][vc_column_text]Marco Luccio Bio \nAward winning artist Marco Luccio has held upward of 50 solo exhibitions nationwide and internationally. \nLuccio’s work is represented in 42 public and corporate collections\, including the New York Public Library\, the Museum of the City of New York\, The New York Historical Society\, The National Gallery of Australia\, The National Gallery of Victoria\, The State Library of Victoria and The City of Melbourne. \nHis work has been shortlisted for many major awards including the Dobell Drawing Prize and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing and he has undertaken artist residencies in New York\, Paris\, Italy and Australia. \nIn 2021 Luccio launched his book and exhibition\, Tales from The Greek\, which featured work inspired by the writing of award-winning author John Hughes. Often a visual “mish mash”\, but somehow quirky and appealing. Charming buildings are squashed between seemingly looming and swaying architecture. New buildings can bring fresh colour and character to their classic neighbours. In Melbourne CBD also\, dear old buildings huddle beneath an ever-rising background of soaring skylines  –  our urban landscape. \nLocally\, I’ve lived through times past of some recognisable faces\, remembering when The Ritz in Fitzroy St had drag and strip shows.  Nick Cave played at The George (later this building was rejuvenated by restaurant entrepreneur\, Donlevy Fitzpatrick). The Prince is Victoria’s oldest gay pub where theatre friends partied at Pokies\, and The Espy – it always rocked! \nGrowing up\, going into the city to catch-up with friends was always\, “Meet me under the clocks” at Flinders St Station. Collins Street was ‘the Paris end’ and Federation Square was the Gas & Fuel building site. \nWanting to capture this new energy\, I sketched with ink pen\, working freely\, intuitively\, enabling movement to depict what I call my Urban Abstract works. Later\, I added a little colour with pencil or watercolour. \n– Pamela Reid / Artist St \nwww.pamelareid.biz\nInstagram: @pamelareidart[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]A passion can be sublimated\, postponed\, pushed down and neglected. But eventually it demands to\nbe recognised and dealt with. A fervour for art and photography from childhood took back seat as\nPamela pursued a career in the advertising industry (both here and in UK)\, then for over 25 years in the\nEntertainment/Music industries in artist management\, concert touring\, event project management\,\nmarketing and publicity. \nPamela’s love of both performance and visual arts\, along with an ability to visualise and comprehend\ndesign and composition\, played an essential role in her day job\, while working with photographers\,\ngraphic designers\, illustrators\, film and theatre-makers informed the artist emerging in her personal life.\nMuch of Pamela’s artwork comes from the impact of light and the framework of life drawing\, those\ncreative responses to form\, gesture\, volume and tonal qualities. She works in a variety of mediums:\npastel\, charcoal\, Ink & watercolour\, acrylic\, collage and printmaking techniques. “There’s such\nindividuality in what evokes response. I don’t restrict myself to a single medium. Rather\, I work with what\nfeels right and the artworks evolve.” \nThree of her solo exhibitions\, “Pen to Paper” (2017)\, “Women in Love” (2015/2016) and “Light & Day”\n(2009)\, illustrated her shared passion for literature and art\, with all works being married to writings by\nfavourite authors and classic prose. \nWith a belief that ‘everybody is an artist’ and wanting to work with communities\, Pamela was successful\nin obtaining two local Arts & Culture Grants for projects titled: \nThe Village Artists – In the tradition of the Village Artist\, Pamela sketched and painted with the\nneighbourhood children and at the local primary school. The resulting exhibition represented both her\nwork and the young artists\, reflecting their creativity and contemporary village lifestyle within the historic\,\narchitectural backdrop of Middle Park. (The project was supported by the City of Port Phillip Cultural\nDevelopment Fund\, 2018.) \nThe Urban-Eyes Project – Pamela invited the people around Stonnington to paint; spontaneous\,\nunstructured. While they painted\, Pamela captured the essence of the community through her camera\nlens. From family birthday celebrations in the gardens\, to market shoppers\, dog walkers and the Principal\,\nstaff and students at Prahran High School\, these collaborate outcomes comprised the “Urban-Eyes” art\nand photography exhibition staged in both the foyer and mezzanine galleries at Chapel Off Chapel\,\nPrahran. (Project was supported by a City of Stonnington Arts & Cutlure grant\, 2019.) \nPamela also conducts ‘Introduction to Life Drawing’ workshops for those who lack the confidence or\nbelief that they can draw or create art. She devised this program using yoga poses and model to\ndemonstrate the foundations for capturing gesture and human form.\nShe sees her growth as an artist as continued ‘new beginnings’. Pamela has been accepted for an\nArtist’s residency at Arte Studio Genestrelle in Assisi (Italy) in June 2023.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A complimentary dance of opposites attracting. \nEvery park is different\, but also the same. The same magic. \nParks are peaceful but never still. All parks transform\, they are changelings\, both serene and constant\, and dynamic and quickening.\nParks take us journeying about the cycles of our Earth; the lengthening heat of Summer\, and the bold blaze of Autumn\, the cruel of Winter\, and the seductive promise of Spring. \nWhen I paint\, I breathlessly chase their changing palette. Trees catch and shape light. Winding paths dim and brighten. Sunlight dapples and cold skies deepen and cool.\nParks can be places of hushed silence until we allow them to speak to us. Until we halt and listen carefully to the poetry.\nThe sigh of wind. The gust and clatter of leaves like the sassy lifting of a skirt. Birdsong both sweet and raucous. People talking\, dogs barking and in the distance\, children at play. \nParks are deeply mysterious and always generous. They bring out the best in us and they remind us that this best was always within us.\nParks remind us to breathe deeply. They redden our cheeks and arouse our senses. We take these things with us into the park\, and the park awakens them. \nParks gift us a priceless portable freedom.\nWe take this gift home with us\, and I paint this freedom. \nGretchen Kaye | Visual Artist[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Painter Gretchen Kaye studied oil painting in Hamburg (International Summer Academy for Art and Design) and in Berlin (Schule für Bildende Kunst und Gestaltung) after completing her Diploma of Visual Arts at CAE with Prudence Flint (painting) and Richard Stringer (sculpture). \nMystery\, narrative and movement are the main themes of her work. \nHer style is described as abstract realism. \nKaye has exhibited in group exhibitions and her works form part of private collections internationally. In 2018\, celebrity interior designer and TV host\, Shaynna Blaze\, selected Kaye’s painting\, ‘The Secret’ to form part of her design for Channel Nine’s real estate reality show\, Buying Blind. \nKaye designed and painted a theatre backdrop for stage show\, Tango’s Violin\, used for performances at major venues in Sydney\, Melbourne and Perth. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her sublime lithographs of birds helped cement the Gould name in ornithological history. Elizabeth’s life was short but eventful\, unfortunately dying after giving birth to her eighth child. \nWith Elizabeth’s drawings and lithography skills and John’s research\, they produced a number of significant books of ornithology. Elizabeth also illustrated Charles Darwin’s Galapagos finches and emus. \nIn 1838-1840 Elizabeth Gould\, mother and wife made a courageous journey to Australia. Leaving her younger children in London in her mother’s care\, travelling by sea with her eldest son on “The Parsee” accompanying John in his ambition to research and document Australian bird species as yet unseen in Europe for their book\, The Birds of Australia. Over the years the acknowledgement of Elizabeth’s contribution was not always clear in the signage of the lithographs. \nDying a year into the publication of The Birds of Australia\, her beautiful illustrations and preliminary watercolours were finished off by H.C. Richter.  Celebrating Elizabeth’s Australian journey my paintings are the re-working of the many Australian birds featured in Elizabeth’s detailed lithographs.  I have made works in which native flora and fauna are entwined\, some of these species are now extinct or endangered. \nIn a contemporary portrayal of Elizabeth\, I have set her against a backdrop of the Australian bush. Gentle triggers allude to her uncertainty in an unknown land\, perhaps a fear of finding herself unwelcome. \nMy works bring awareness to the life and lithographs of Elizabeth Gould\, together with a continuation of the task of observing and documenting our native Australian flora and fauna\, so many species of which are also at risk of disappearing without a trace. \nBronni Krieger\, Artist Statement[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Profile” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Bronni’s work fills a space with beauty and emotion\, her pieces evoking vulnerability and love. The work she creates deals with the protection of animals\, mankind and the transient nature of life. \nThrough her delicate and gentle works\, a message is often conveyed. \nHer work raises awareness and protection of our native animal species.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Practicing with an acknowledgment of duality\, these works seek not to deceive but rather to simultaneously appreciate and critique. Paint is explored in both its intangibility as colour and its tactile embodiment\, from its innovations of manufacture to the traditions of its application. \nHistory folds into the present\, symbolism merges with the literal\, and representation remains a painting.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]b. 1992 \n2017 Bachelor of fine art (Drawing and Print Media) VCA (Melbourne University)\, Naarm/ Melbourne\n2013 Bachelor of Communication Design\, RMIT University\, Naarm/Melbourne \nOliver Bradley is an early career artist practicing on Wurundjeri country\, Naarm (Melbourne) and Dja Dja Wurrung country. It’s been an overwhelming and exhausting journey to clear the place. Originally built by my Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandmother\, over time it has quietly decayed away. Once loved\, the dust took over. Books\, unopened boxes\, and hoarded objects filled the rooms and hallways. \nRestoring a place that is filled with so many memories\, bright and dark\, melancholic and vibrant\, has tested my mother’s perseverance. Despite that\, in the midst of a pandemic\, the devotion I witnessed to give this home some kind of new meaning in its next life has made her true strengths shine. And I couldn’t be prouder. \nThroughout the years we spent working on clearing the rooms bit by bit\, I occasionally pulled out my camera to make photographs of the ever precarious moments that symbolised the end of its journey for my mother and our family. Focusing on the process\, transformation and experience of clearing and restoring my mother’s childhood home\, we encounter familial possessions once thought lost and reminisce about moments from here and there. \nObserving the relationship of the human condition\, time\, family and place Off the Well-Worn Path seeks to connect the past and present through inheritance and regeneration. It seeks to explore an open dialogue that seeks to exchange the ever-increasing tension internally and externally of a childhood home\, losing its relationship with its kin. Often seen with a camera in his hands or around his shoulders\, he creates with spontaneity\, natural tendency and direction. His earliest memories of making photographs and films in his youth have led him to capture a diverse range of visual subjects. From his vibrant\, soulful vision of the Australian live music scene to his personal\, introspective visual projects\, his work encapsulates a spirited\, creative and visionary approach to storytelling. \nIn his effort to explore complex dialogues\, his personal work proposes to illuminate light on issues which require further understanding. Suggesting an exchange that is often contemplative\, he seeks to abandon traditional ways of seeing\, to question what is being observed without passivity or judgement. Whether he is spending the day on long-term visual projects or working commercially in the studio\, he often creates sequences that open up imaginative\, contemplative and rhythmic dialogues. \nIn 2020\, Ryley was awarded the Baillot and Balfour Endowment for his ongoing visual narrative and self-published photobook\, As Memories & Time Entwine\, A Hanging Branch Connects Us. His visual and written work has been extensively published in Savage Thrills\, The British Journal of Photography\, NME\, Beat Magazine and has exhibited his photographs at SunStudios\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Bluethumb Art Gallery\, MGA and FortyFiveDownstairs. Often presenting his work in various solo and group exhibitions\, his work takes form in publications and installations. \nRyley would like to acknowledge\, with deep respect\, the sovereignty of the Wurundjeri people as the first custodians of the land on which I work and live. Space is much more than just materials. It is the place we find for ourselves\, in spite of everything. It is finding pockets of joy among others and with ourselves. It is community. ‘Transcending Spaces’ presented by fortyfivedownstairs will showcase gender euphoria by exhibiting trans* artists working in mediums that have traditionally been gendered. This is a celebration of trans joy. \nTo exist in a space is not only to inhabit it but find contentment in community and from within. Where trans people constantly feel unsafe\, they have found safety in their creative work – finding and making their own space from inaccessible spaces\, in spaces coded by gender. Taking what you want from those spaces is a powerful expression of trans joy\, trans resistance\, and our loving trans community. \nTranscending Spaces is a love letter to trans joy from unlikely sources\, seemingly inaccessible spaces\, and finding safety from within typically gendered art mediums. This exhibition will showcase trans artists from all mediums and challenge gendered spaces\, whilst acknowledging the vital role of community in making us feel loved and safe. \nfortyfivedownstairs respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which we are located\, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin nation. We pay respect to their Elders past\, present and emerging. We also acknowledge the harmful effects of colonisation in brutally erasing Indigenous peoples’ gender diversity that existed long before the trans identity emerged. Always was always will be Aboriginal land. \nTrans* recognises all gender-diverse people\, which includes non-binary people and gender non-conforming people. You do not have to wholly identify as trans. You deserve to celebrate your own gender euphoria\, in whatever stage you are on in your gender journey. \nSupported by the lovely folk at Bodriggy.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1674802164597-118f8900-da07″][vc_column_text]Tuesday 7 February from 5pm-7pm: Opening night \nSunday 12 February from 2pm-4pm: Low sensory event\, please RSVP to gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nSaturday 18 February from 1pm-3pm: Embroidery workshop with CJ Starc. $30.00 for a two hour workshop with all materials provided. Furthermore\, my name is connected to the work as the original meaning of my name\, Soile\, comes from the “movement of water” – like moiré that resembles liquid or ripples in water. The work investigates the concept of not belonging through the lens of ‘inside(r) ‘/’ outside(r)’ in the form of illusion and interference\, drawing on my personal experience of isolation and alienation as a Finnish national living in Melbourne during extended Covid-19 lockdowns. \nThe general perception in the world is that Finn’s desire to avoid verbal or physical contact is such a common tendency that it is rooted in the culture. In fact\, there is a proverb that goes\, “Silence is gold\, talking is silver\,” which suggests that one should remain silent if they have nothing insightful to offer. This impression may lead one to believe that\, as a Finn\, I was less likely to experience the social isolation brought on by Covid-19 limits and less in need of companionship. However\, as an extrovert\, my experience of alienation was exacerbated by cultural profiling. This juxtaposition of alienation and wanting to belong is repeated in my work’s stochastic and rational patterns\, while the use of the Finnish language is intended to replicate my experience of alienation for the non-Finnish-speaking viewer. \nA core visual element of the work is the moiré effect\, image interference between two or more superimposing patterns or grids at different angles that clash\, creating a wavy interference pattern. The work explores overlapping sound wave patterns in different forms created from words related to the subject matter in my native Finnish language. By altering the frequencies\, I have created a soundtrack that recreates digitally formed soundwaves\, reflected back to their natural form on the surface of the water. A custom-made sound pool will trigger the sound visible by generating physical\, visible waves in response to sonic sound waves. \nThe artwork embraces and examines the interference that occurs when technology and nature exchange properties\, rational and random patterns interpenetrate\, and regular structure produces irrational effects. \nWords: Home\, Love\, Friendship\, Family\, Distance\, Memories\, Longing\, Outsiderness\, Isolation\, Strength\, Weakness\, Powerlessness\, Lost\, Loss[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Soile Paloheimo’s print-informed art combines traditional print techniques with a contemporary subject matter. A native of Finland\, Paloheimo earned a Bachelor’s degree in Culture and Arts from the Espoo-Vantaa Technical University of Applied Sciences\, Finland\, in 2006 and graduated with BA in Fine arts at RMIT University\, Melbourne in 2022. \nHer practice for the last decade has been in graphic design. However\, after moving to Melbourne\, she translated her artistic vision into the medium of printmaking\, continuing to transform it into an exploration of print and installation. \nPaloheimo uses various print matrixes\, such as etching\, relief and screen print\, to create intricate and thought-provoking works. Her recent work questions the notions of interference and memory within society after multiple isolation periods caused by Covid-19. Her work is intended to replicate the experience of alienation and seeks to be a tribute to the ubiquity\, irrationality\, and unpredictability of life[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Under the direction of Kitan Petkovski\, Smyth’s powerful performance is supported by a live choir of four singing Rachel Lewindon’s hauntingly beautiful original score. The result is a transcendent take on what it means to be human\, imagining Christianity’s message of love extending to embrace all those traditionally excluded because of their sexuality or gender. \n“I wrote The Gospel According to Jesus\, Queen of Heaven because I wanted to resist\,” says Jo Clifford. “Resist the profound and damaging shame and fear and guilt that has been with me almost all my life. The shame and the fear and the guilt that comes on almost all of us trans women and men born into this hostile world.” \n“An amazing fusion of theatre\, storytelling and ritual.” Stage Whispers \n“An inspiring antidote to the legacy of shame left by many a church upbringing.” The Age \n★★★★½ “Smyth’s performance is enthralling” Arts Hub \n★★★★½ “This is a deeply affecting piece of theatre” Theatre Matters \nPhotos by Daniel Rabin \nSupported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1c3de-c779″][vc_column_text]Director: Kitan Petkovski \nPerformer: Kristen Smyth \nComposer: Rachel Lewindon \nSet and Costume Designer: Bethany J. This can be heard from the very opening bars of Beethoven’s late Piano Sonata Op. 90. The two movements of this sonata were described by Beethoven’s biographer Schindler as ‘a struggle between the heart and the head\, and a conversation with the beloved’. Chopin’s haunting Nocturne Op. 48 No. 1 follows\, which contrasts immense beauty and lyricism against ferocious octave passages. Liszt knew these works well and performed them regularly\, and their influence can be heard in his gigantic Sonata in B minor. The extra musical narrative of which is often considered to be the legend of Faust and the moral conflicts it represents.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Biography” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d0f9-59ba”][vc_column_text]Tristan Lee is an Australian pianist internationally recognized\, and critically acclaimed\, for his distinctive recitals and recordings. It is based on the theory of deterrence\, which holds that the threat of using strong weapons against the enemy prevents the enemy’s use of those same weapons. As ridiculous as such a thing sounds\, it is still utilised today as a modern nuclear deterrence. But how did we get to this point? \nMike Green’s latest body of work grapples with the task of comprehending the incomprehensible. In an era marred by narrow political thinking\, social media influence\, and mass consumerism\, madness is mainstream – and more dangerous than ever. \nWhat happens when you multiply insanity with deranged leadership? \nSituations are born like the one painted above – the 2020 capitol attack in Washington: a giant pack of babies storming a sacred American political institution in the name of a criminal. \nMike Green is an established artist with over forty years of exhibition history within leading commercial galleries in Australia and throughout America. Although he is an accomplished watercolourist and well known for his technically adept landscape paintings\, his new body of work is a dramatic departure from the calming works of the artists oeuvre. Politically charged and full of humour\, his new work strikes a balance between real and ridiculous during this pivotal point in human history.\nFor many years Australian politics have not included any big thinking. Short term decisions – including the Iraq war and Australia’s response to global warming and asylum seekers – have cost billions. Meanwhile\, successive governments have plead lack of funds for vital social needs\, whilst ignoring\, for example\, reformation of the taxation system. At the same time\, the international situation has continued to deteriorate following the pandemic\, which brewed a melting pot of counterculture distrust and madness. \nThese paintings are a refuge point for Green to comment on the current situation\, and humour is the code to engage with them. Green creates ridiculous paintings for these ridiculous times. Fictional characters including kewpie dolls\, toy soldiers\, and Mexican wrestlers become protagonists in modern historical contexts. The figures serve as a gateway to question our shortcomings and how absurd it all really is. According to Green\, “… trying to paint this madness out of my head using irony and metaphor\, with some admitted pleasure.” \nOpening at fortyfivedownstairs on November 22nd\, let the madness begin. \nPresented by fortyfivedownstairs and Magma Galleries. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Programming” tab_id=”1668155882775-4b634a2e-0ed5″][vc_column_text]Opening Night: Tuesday 22nd of November from 6pm – 8pm \nYou are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the opening of ‘M A D: Mutually Assured Destruction’ by Mike Green. \nArtist Talk with Mike Green: Saturday 26th of November 2-3pm \nPlease join Mike Green for a free event where the public can gain insight into his impactful and inspired work.\nRSVP to this free event by contacting communications@fortyfivedownstairs.com [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
