Numbering in the thousands and piled up in no particular order\, this is the stuff of nightmares for conservators\, but it suits me. \nLooking back over old work\, the earlier drawings are easy to spot. They are self-consciously “scrawled”\, an affectation I thought was artful and one I sensibly gave up after a short time. \nOther idiosyncrasies jump out. She/her pronouns for any and all persons described\, and the use of one obscenity in particular. Both are a link to the antiquated gay slang language of Polari and more specifically to the foul-mouthed lesbian icon and Soho drinking club proprietress Muriel Belcher – whose name alone should qualify her for celebrity. \nThroughout the drawings\, heroes\, villains\, and victims are name checked or referenced obliquely. Ranging from pop culture staples to totally obscure personal obsessions\, here they’re forced to mingle in what might accurately be described as the cocktail mixer from hell. \nDifferent friendships have inspired different works. The stories and observations my friends share get the James Hale treatment\, usually with enthusiastic approval. \nEven more profound an influence on my work are eavesdropping and plagiarism. Bad habits that have served me in good stead. \nSome works here I had forgotten existed. Others are embarrassingly bad. Others still were too cruel\, disgusting\, or libellous to be included in this exhibition. \nIt’s tempting to compare my work en masse to an avalanche or some other non-specific natural disaster. Perhaps an enormous din\, a thousand voices talking at once\, is more accurate. \nThis makes for\, in my humble opinion\, a perfect viewing experience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]James Hale is a text artist working in Melbourne. He makes colourful paintings and austere drawings in his Brunswick studio. Part of the ‘Blue Streak’ program aimed at developing Britain’s military resources into a credible nuclear deterrent threat\, the rockets were loaded with inert 3000 kilotonne warheads. Fast forward to 2023\, and Australians are living in a place and time in which notions of global safety and wellbeing have never been more unstable. \nNear Sighted is an audio-visual installation comprised of six tiny interactive dioramas. Presented as a contemporary re-imagining of the ‘toy theatres’ of the nineteenth century\, the dioramas are sound-based works constructed with miniature painted watercolour cut-outs and lit from within. \nThis project marks a major shift in form for Kate Hunter\, after a number of years working in live performance. Near Sighted is a multi-modal experiment which disrupts ways of describing\, encountering\, manipulating\, and mediating performance ‘texts’ through a combination of theatre-making and devising practices\, sound and audio recording\, digital voice modulation\, writing and visual art processes. \nIt is also a personal story which draws on the artist’s father’s experience as an aeronautical engineer in the early days of rocket design to examine our relationship to place\, our collective imagination\, and our post-war identity in the face of multiple existential threats.   \nKate Hunter // Artist Statement \nCreatives\nConcept\, creation\, construction – Kate Hunter\nVoice – Josephine Lange\nDramaturge – Emilie Collyer\nComputer processing – Jem Savage\nAdditional coding – Benjamin Savage\nAudio mixing and mastering; publicity images – Leo Dale[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kate Hunter is an interdisciplinary artist working across performance\, improvisation\, painting\, and sound. Her work juxtaposes digital and analog technology\, storytelling and the live body\, and employs innovative use of found objects\, polyphonics and verbatim recordings to examine the complex interplay between hearing\, listening\, reading and speaking that is implicit in the ways humans communicate through language. \nRecently\, Kate has begun overlaying painted objects with personal narratives\, sound design and writing to create works which experiment with notions of perspective\, scope and size to bring into question our ocular-centric approaches to ways of being in the world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Jemima’s aim is to spark conversations about body acceptance and provide fat people a chance to see their bodies represented in a fine art capacity. Painting these figures is extremely relevant as fatphobia is ever present in society. There is constant discrimination to deal with when you are fat hence Jemima is regaining control over the perception of the naked body. They create an accepting space for women and non binary folk to feel not only comfortable but also celebrated. \nJemima Longworth // Artist Statement[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

During 2020\, a confluence of critical personal events motivated me to re-evaluate how I saw myself as an individual\, the identifications that others projected upon me\, and my relationship with others in Australian society. Guided by the photo therapy framework of Jo Spence and Rosy Martin\, in conjunction with a material engagement informed by Karen Barad’s agential realism\, I approached this self-reflection by engaging with a diverse range of photograph-centred practices throughout 2021 and 2022. Parental and institutional erasures of diasporic heritage\, and its replacement with the values of Australian middle-class suburbia and professional status\, were critically examined through this multimodal approach. \nI began work on this project with preconceived ideas about recovering some form of lost Hong Kong-Chinese heritage – or perhaps reconnecting with a forgotten community that I was separated from during our family’s diasporic trajectory. What emerged through this work eventually revealed my own identity(ies) and cultural position(s) to be more complex\, nuanced\, and unexpected. \nKelvin Lau // Artist Statement[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]\nKelvin Lau / Lau Wing Kei CV\nLast updated: May 2023 \nEducation\n2023 MA (Photography)\, Photography Studies College\n2017 PhD\, University of Melbourne\n2013 MPH\, University of Melbourne\n2006 FRACGP\, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners\n1997 BSc(Med) MB BS\, University of New South Wales \nSolo exhibitions\n2023 Painted Ghosts\, Sol Gallery\, Melbourne \nGroup exhibitions\n2023 Through Time and Space\, Museum of Chinese Australian History\, Melbourne\n2021 STAGES Life in Lockdown\, Monash Gallery of Art\, Melbourne\n2020 Bowness Photography Prize\, Monash Gallery of Art\, Melbourne\n2014-2020 Salon\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Melbourne\n1991 ArtExpress (1990)\, Art Gallery of New South Wales \nAwards\, grants\, residencies\n2023 Creative Residency\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Melbourne\n2021 Finalist\, Australian Photography Awards\n2020 Finalist\, Bowness Photography Prize\, Monash Gallery of Art\, Melbourne \nCollaborations\n2022 Consultant\, Unknowing Madness project by Thembi Soddell for The Big Anxiety Festival\, Melbourne\n2016 Co-facilitator\, Exploring Emotion Through Photography\, youth program with headspace Collingwood\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, and ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions \nPublications\n2017 Understanding mental distress in young people from a migrant background in Australia through photo-interviewing\, open access thesis\, University of Melbourne \nDeclared fields of interest\nReflexive photographic practice\nAutoethnography\nQualitative research methods\nVisual social research\nArts/health\nHealth/illness lived experience\nPrimary healthcare[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

If Myra had been Tereshkova\, she would not have lived her life moving in marital paralysis\, parenting her children and being the woman perennially behind the man. If Myra had been Tereshkova\, her children would respect her and not dismiss her for being a feminist traitor and doormat. If Myra had been Tereshkova\, she would have realised that little girl who showed the boys how things were done. Myra in Space tells the tragi-comic story of Myra Foreman\, a woman who missed her life on earth and is now going to live it\, in space. \nImage by Darren Gill \nSupported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d8e1-f6f9″][vc_column_text]Writer: Bridgette Burton \nDirector: Alice Bishop \nCast: Kelly Nash (Myra)\, Greg Parker (Bruce)\, Annie Lumsden (Valli)\, Nicholas Jaquinot (Phillip)\, and Rama Nicholas (Valentina Tereshkova) \nSet & Costume Designer: Silvia Shao \nLighting Designer: Richard Vabre \nSound Designer: Nat Grant \nProducers: Bridgette Burton and Christina Costigan of Baggage Productions[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d8e1-f6f9″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35 \nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \n*Please note\, a seniors card is not a valid concession for this performance \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

This collection not only celebrates their artistic achievements but also sheds light on the positive impact their artistic practice has had and continues to have on their lives. \n“The path isn’t always straight but you get to your destination in the end” \nIn this exhibition\, you will encounter a rich spectrum of artistic styles and mediums\, each mirroring the students’ distinct experiences and voices. As you explore the gallery\, you’ll encounter artworks that offer a unique insight into the worlds these students inhabit. These worlds are often silent\, but the meaning embedded in each artwork speaks volumes about resilience\, identity\, challenges\, and aspirations. \n“Our Worlds\, Our Words” is a celebration of the courage it takes to transform personal stories into visual narratives. From the intricacy of a finely detailed pencil sketch to the boldness of a sweeping acrylic stroke\, every piece tells a story – a story of growth\, of self-discovery\, and of the infinite possibilities that lie within creativity. \n“The blends I use in my landscapes move from dark to light to create a sense of moving forwards” \nArt is more than just colors on a canvas or shapes on paper; it is a lifeline and a sanctuary\, through which these students navigate the complexities of their worlds. In a society where words might often fail to capture the depth of feelings or experiences\, these young artists have discovered that their practice provides a safe haven for their thoughts and self-efficacy to take shape. \n“Our Worlds\, Our Words” not only invites you to witness the students’ creative prowess but also to understand the pivotal role that art plays in these young people’s lives. Through art\, these students have discovered a means to communicate their stories\, their dreams\, and their aspirations. \n“I want the audience to feel relaxed and intrigued by my art” \nAs you wander the gallery\, take a moment to reflect on what art signifies for these students. It is a tool for self-discovery\, a channel for building self-esteem\, and a vehicle for transcending barriers. The artworks speak not only of challenges faced and conquered but also of the immense capacity within each individual to transform pain into beauty and vulnerability into strength.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”About Parkville College” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Parkville College is a specialist Victorian Government School that provides education to students who are\, or have been\, detained in custody\, a secure care setting\, or transitioning from these settings. Working in collaboration with the Department of Justice and Community Safety and the Department of Families\, Fairness and Housing\, we deliver education across five diverse campuses throughout Victoria. \nParkville College operates 52 weeks a year and caters to some of the most vulnerable students in the state.  Providing education to students with diverse learning goals\, and abilities\, Parkville College individually tailors education to the student to give them the greatest successes. \nStudents become enrolled if they are detained in a Youth Justice Centre or a Secure Care Service (SCS) within Victoria. While enrolment numbers fluctuate daily\, the school typically provides education to around 300 students on any given day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

He has further expanded his craft with the introduction of organic textured materials such as stitched canvas coffee bags\, fabric\, rope\, cardboard incorporated into rich layers of pigmented wax\, the ancient encaustic technique. \nIn 2019 Michelangelo collaborated with artist Jennifer Jabu exploring themes of sustainability with the use of all natural materials. These hung artworks are textural\, jutting from the surface\, their multidimensionality referencing architectural relief. The exhibition also includes examples of three-dimensional sculptural works in a rich array of pure solid colours enveloped by the encaustic technique. \n-Mariella DelConte\, Curator[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Michelangelo Russo was born in 1962\, Campobasso\, Italy. Michelangelo started painting at the age of 12\, he had his first solo exhibition in 1977. After studying architecture and graphic design in Pescara and Rome he relocated to Berlin in early 1990 where he lived for 4 years before moving to Melbourne Australia in 1994. During his career Michelangelo had several solo and group shows in Italy\, Germany\, Cuba and Australia. Michelangelo has had a lifelong interest not only in painting but also music.  Since 1979 he has played in several bands in Italy\, Germany and Australia. He has toured Europe playing concerts and experimental music festivals\, and has appeared on several seminal recordings. Since 1994 he collaborated widely with musician/songwriter/producer Hugo Race\, and composers/musicians Wendy Morrison and Andrew Ogburn amongst others\, appearing in many projects\, recordings and performances.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Jemima’s aim is to spark conversations about body acceptance and provide fat people a chance to see their bodies represented in a fine art capacity. Painting these figures is extremely relevant as fatphobia is ever present in society. There is constant discrimination to deal with when you are fat. Hence\, Jemima is regaining control over the perception of the naked body. They create an accepting space for women and non binary folk to feel not only comfortable but also celebrated.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Artist’s bio[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

It is a continuation and exploration of my past artistic themes and metaphors including the cocoon\, elephant\, and gorilla. My work always concerns the seeking and creation of safe spaces and is motivated by pleas to look after each other and to protect nature in the great unravelling that seems to be the current state of the world. \nSince my 2021 solo exhibition\, Making Nonsense\, the world has continued its crazy upside-down trajectory. At a time when the world should have been coming together to combat climate change\, turmoil continued with rampant political upheaval\, the effects of Covid 19\, human rights violations and in February 2022\, the invasion of Ukraine by an unhinged Russian dictator. \nMy response then became an all-consuming social project\, the #sunflowerquiltforukraine\, forged in a spirit of solidarity\, love\, and hope. Designed to be wrapped\, draped\, or laid out Christo-style. It can inhabit various settings and means different things in each. It is both a cover for sites of atrocities and a symbol of comfort\, safety and the capacity of people to come together\, replying to the effects of war and destruction with something creative\, hand-made and often deeply personal. In July 2022\, I flew the quilt to London\, and together with Ukrainian refugees\, exhibited it all over the UK\, including 10 Downing Street\, the Albert Hall\, Tate Modern\, Hyde- and St James Park\, on the banks of the Thames and in Sussex farmland. It was used in performances and installations and for recitals. In the Albert Hall our quilt was part of the BBC Proms event\, displayed in a giant prayer-circle with the Ukrainian freedom orchestra. \nWhile it has been uplifting\, hopeful and inspiring\, it has simultaneously been an experience full of sadness\, pain\, conflict and chaos. Unsprung is a response to\, and an escape from the latter\, a document underpinned by the unravelling of the world and myself. My daily exposure to the effects of war have\, despite my best intentions\, bled into my daily life\, as a carer for my son with autism\, and as a wife with an often-absent partner. \nUnsprung is a defiant celebration that seeks to offset the grinding force and horrors of conflict\, though I chose spring as a deliberately ambiguous metaphor. Oscillating between recognizable floral motifs\, abstraction\, simple shapes\, and more complex decorative layering\, vibrant colour dances in gestural strokes. Tangible threads combine with invisible stories of loneliness\, hope lost and found. Paintings are massive or tiny\, stretched and unstretched\, to suggest something innocent yet ‘unsprung’. \nBy 2023 the #sunflowerquiltforukraine installation was over 250 long. We are continuing to sew today with the aim of doubling our 250m installation. \nArtist Statement by Janno McLaughlin and edited by Rose Lang \nPhotographs by Simon Strong[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Graduating with a Masters of Contemporary Art from Victoria College of Arts\, Melbourne University in 2018\, Janno has spent most of her time prior\, living between New York and Buenos Aires\, Argentina. Janno’s artworks seek to sow hope\, bravery\, love\, optimism\, resilience\, and whimsy; -anchored by a deliberately ridiculous and unwavering sense of humour. Her approach is unapologetically bold with a preference for blazing colour and mixed media. Janno deploys paint\, thread and richly associative metaphors to portray the most vulnerable\, fragile and endangered in society. In her ten solo exhibitions\, Janno has explored the theme of outsider; the foreigner living in a non-English speaking world; the disenfranchised urban poor; and closer to home and as the mother of a child with autism\, the isolation of disability and need for safe spaces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1691639761237-627ed375-a8a1″][vc_column_text]Opening Night \nThursday 10 August 2023 \n5pm – 7pm \nfortyfivedownstairs \n  \nArtist Talk \nSaturday 12 August 2023 \n1pm – 3pm \nfortyfivedownstairs[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This has always been a conflicting idea for Sophie being born and having lived the first half of her life in Britain and now residing in Australia. Sophie’s practise has always explored this concept of place and displacement through paintings. \nAfter travelling to the East MacDonnell ranges last year Sophie began to understand the lure and pull of truly connecting with place. Surrendering to the calm and profound power of the place. \n‘Accepting the Love\, warmth\, solace\, strength\, peace \,protection and respite the land offers’. \nThrough her love of colour and mark making\, the paintings and drawings retell this visceral response of being in Country. Spending time working outdoors and observing the effect colour has on the emotional and physical self\, exploring how this response goes beyond the senses. \nThe scale of the works enables the movement to be transferred through the brush. Painted with the whole body\, inviting the viewer to question what is literally observed and what cannot be observed\, the feeling and soul of a place. Combining imagery with the story that other people will create by travelling this journey. \nThese series of paintings and drawings from night and day are a moment in time of being truly immersed and connected to nature.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1690608795651-6e5fdc0d-7772″][vc_column_text]Saturday 5 August – Panel discussion with Sophie Perez\, Mary Tonkin and Joe Blundell – facilitated by curator Esther Gyorki \nDetails \nTime: 2pm – 3pm \nWhere: fortyfivedownstairs large gallery 45 Flinders Lane Melbourne \nRSVP:  via ticketsearch \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Sophie Perez is a British Born artist who graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 2003 with an MA in painting. \nIn 2005 Sophie relocated to Melbourne Australia and now resides on the Mornington Peninsula with her family: drawing inspiration from the surroundings and everyday life. \nHaving a strong connection with the land has always been what drives and informs Sophie’s practise. \nSophie says her love of paint\, the physicality and endless possibilities of this medium give her a new language to describe the landscapes she emerges herself in. \nAbsorbing the atmosphere of her surroundings \, Sophie’s landscapes have a narrative\, history and memories that she describes through mark making[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Who will tell her what’s really going on? And where will the discoveries she makes that night take her in the years to come? \nA playwright of genuine audacity and assurance\, Caryl Churchill is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost innovators of theatrical language. Far Away is her masterwork\, presenting audiences with a profound and unexpected vision of a world sliding into chaos. Arguably her most famous play\, Far Away delivers a dazzling satire on the crude but increasingly popular idea that there is a binary divide between virtue and iniquity\, between good and evil\, and most pertinent to the times we find ourselves in\, between an “us” and a “them”. \nFeaturing an astonishing cast led by acclaimed and award-winning actor Alison Whyte\, Far Away marks Patalog Theatre’s highly anticipated return to the Melbourne Independent Stage and fortyfivedownstairs following a series of critical successes; namely Punk Rock (2019) at fortyfivedownstairs and Tusk Tusk (2019) at St Martins Youth Arts Centre.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f13593-b6eb”][vc_column_text]Director: Cassandra Fumi \nCast: Alison Whyte\, Lucy Ansell and Darcy Kent\, with Darcy Sterling-Cox and Noray Hosny \nDesigner: Dann Barber \nLighting Designer: Rachel Burke \nComposer and Sound Designer: Rachel Lewindon \nAssistant Director: Kuda Mapeza \nAssociate Designer: Savanna Wegman \n\nTechnical Lighting Assistant: Spencer Herd \nStage Manager: Luci Watts \nAssistant Stage Manager: Finn McLeish \nProducers: Ben Walter and Thalia Dudek \n\n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f13593-b6eb”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession / Under 30’s: $39\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members/Under 30’s \n*Please note\, a seniors card is not a valid concession for this performance \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

To this day\, weekly art workshops continue with the women at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in Melbourne and Tarrengower Women’s Prison in Central Victoria. \nWomen come to the art room with no preconceptions. They are often low in confidence\, have experienced trauma and have little\, if any\, formal training in visual art. However\, they come with a wealth of life experience and stories inherent in cultural diversity. \nOnce the women overcome their initial fear and self doubt\, they enter a world of creativity and a blossoming self determination. There is a positive\, focussed\, almost meditative energy in the art room\, as the women approach their work with palpable enthusiasm and commitment. The deep satisfaction and sense of achievement the women experience can be life changing and in some cases\, life saving. \nAnnually there is an exhibition showcasing women’s artwork in tandem with a theatre production at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre\, open to invited audiences including friends and families of the women. \nTheir artwork communicates a multitude of themes\, voicing the women’s humanity\, vulnerability and dreams. The work is powerful\, sometimes raw\, often beautiful and always a testimony to resilience. \nThis exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs is a selection of artworks collected over the many years of Somebody’s Daughter’s work with women in Victorian prisons. \n              [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Performances” tab_id=”1686807038317-7f7db3f9-85fd”][vc_column_text]Performances\nThursday 13 July 12.30pm\nFriday 14 July 12.30pm\nSaturday 15 July 1:30pm – PERFORMANCE\, ARTIST Q&A \nExperience the transformative power of art and storytelling as Somebody’s Daughter presents a captivating exhibition of artwork by women in Victorian prisons at fortyfivedownstairs. Through a unique blend of original music and song\, this powerful production offers an uplifting and inspirational insight into the resilience and strength of the performers. \nShe Swallowed That Lie beautifully captures the stories and voices of women who have experienced the cycles that lead to their experiences with prison. Delve into their world as they share their personal narratives and shed light on the human spirit’s unwavering ability to overcome adversity. \nDon’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness the artistry and resilience of the women supported by Somebody’s Daughter. I was fascinated by the raw beauty of contemporary dance and its ability to give voice to genuine emotions\, thoughts\, and desires that we often keep hidden from others. The series captures improvised performances from three contemporary dancers: Chloe Leong\, Donnie Duncan\, and Aslan Mukhametzhanov. \nThe fluid lines of each piece follow the dancers’ movements\, conveying a sense of harmony with their feelings and the music. My aim was to create a sense of weightlessness and expansion\, allowing viewers to get carried away with the rhythm of the performances. I hope these pieces transport viewers to a moment of pure emotion that is both calming and invigorating.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Ksenia’s lifelong passion for painting began from as early as she can remember\, always wishing to incorporate art into her way of life and inspire others. Now a contemporary artist based in Melbourne\, Australia\, Ksenia captures a sense of tranquility found in the exploration of her surroundings such as nature\, photography and architecture. Her minimalistic style balances a soft fluid palette with refined abstract forms\, built layer by layer. \n“When you immerse yourself in your environment and calm your mind\, you notice subtle details with beauty in essence.” \nHer creative path further developed in Tokyo\, Japan\, where she completed a degree in fashion design. The pure aesthetic and unobtrusive beauty of the country heavily influenced her work\, visible through her selection of raw canvas and organic processes. \n16 years in the fashion industry gave Ksenia the possibility to experiment in a broad spectrum of creative styles and refine her artistic vision. The transition to painting was a natural step that furthered the connection with her inner self allowing expression through her work. \nKsenia’s work aims to open an intimate dialog that transitions the viewer from their daily chaos to a remote restorative space\, inviting them to look within and find the connection to the wider world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Wagner’s confirmed PhD research and artworks ask\, ‘how can contemporary art methods reveal new social and aesthetic understandings of our connections with water ecology and floodplains?’ Her investigation seeks to interrogate the ways in which our understanding of water emerges from diverse knowledge systems straddling both fact and fiction and argue for the methodological value of art as a crucial and unique set of modalities that can extend our understanding of water as a socially mediated element\, beyond physical and psychological distance. \nFocusing on a specific water system\, the Murray River Floodplains network\, Wagner seeks to create a network of material and socially-engaged artworks that brings into view both our individual and collective social and political memories of water. Drawing on a method that connects a dialogical engagement with targeted participants\, the interview’s sound recordings are edited and harnessed to produce sound and light art installations. In choosing to work with a diverse group of participants who are asked to share their memories of water\, \nWagner’s work seeks to offer new understandings of the relationship between socially-engaged art\, sculpture and sound. She argues that a process of abstraction occurs in the slippage across media resulting in a current of noise whose meaning is elusive. Employing artworks (installations) to act as provocations that focus the audience’s attention while creating the pre-conditions for change\, she so to affirm our innate connection with water and the need to maintain it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Annette Wagner is an emerging artist\, PhD Candidate\, founder of Wunder Gym and a Creative Director. \nWagner grew up on the lands of the Latji Latji\, where the Murray and the Darling rivers meet and understands water is a social medium as much as it is a biological necessity. Her interdisciplinary\, practice-led research\, is situated in contemporary arts\, exploring concepts of memory and water ecology. Socially engaged methodologies inform her creative practice to examine notions of psychological distance. Her creative practice maps connections with water through oral histories and abstracts their sound frequencies into ‘voice prints’\, generating contemporary artworks using light and sound\, demonstrating our innate and enduring connection with water itself. She does this to support her artistic strategy\, using contemporary art to promote engagement and connection\, unravelling abstract concepts of climate change\, shifting mental perceptions and encouraging social action. \nHer PhD is generating a contemporary art response for the Victorian Murray River Floodplain Restoration Project (VMFRP). Mapping expansive personal water narratives central to our identity\, exposing the significant gap in memories of water using contemporary art. Her reticulated methodology and artwork places public engagement centrally in an effort address community disconnection and impacts on our waterways and environments.  \nIn 2019 she founded a social practice called the Wunder Gym. Partnering with prominent arts events\, institutions and LGA’s she successfully delivers community arts programs nurturing creativity and curiosity\, with diverse exhibition outcomes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This rarely seen play\, in Bloomsday’s crisp new adaptation\, is an intriguing and provocative challenge to conventional sexual morality. \n‘It took a crucial revival by Harold Pinter in 1970-1 and subsequent triumphs in London and New York in 2006 for audiences to begin to grasp its true subversiveness\,’ says Bloomsday’s Artistic Director\, Frances Devlin-Glass. ‘These productions highlighted the play’s dark humour\, its unspoken psychological menace and darker motivations. Exiles was belatedly recognised as a new kind of theatre\, quite different from the well-made and morality-focussed plays of Ibsen.’ \nLong before Free Love\, Polyamory\, Homoeroticism\, Bisexuality and Thruppledom\, there was Exiles. Far ahead of its time\, it updates the nineteenth-century adultery triangle\, presenting not one but two sets of potential partner exchanges\, and an additional homoerotic undercurrent. It prompts questions: when experimental individuals in a repressed culture untether themselves from sexual conventions\, what gives? What are the limits to freedom in love? What are the dangers? \n‘I’m intrigued by the energy of the play\,’ says Director Carl Whiteside. ‘We’ve stripped away the conventional trappings to reveal a gutsy\, passionate piece that is as relevant today as when it was written – perhaps more so.’ \nBloomsday in Melbourne is also presenting two one day sessions to help new readers break into James Joyce\, and when you book for either course\, you can bring a friend for free! With this series of oversized paintings – I imagine them to be as one whole artwork that is broken into a series of smaller (though still very large) paintings. \nWhen I plan and execute the work I document and lay them together – so the ideas and direction make sense to me. They then begin to tell a story. The works to me are a part of a larger milieu\, that I want the viewer to become ensconced within. \nI have always had a strong connection to literature. The titles for the works will often come from books or papers that I am currently reading. Time then spent researching and gathering ideas which help me form a feeling that I’ll maintain throughout the creation of the whole body of work. Once I have reached a certain point in my own research process – I have an enduring thought or feeling that stays with me while I paint several works. I paint until the urgency of this thought or feeling subsides\, then\, I’ll return to my reading and research process – and with this the cycle continues. \nWhen the works are finished\, I stand the works together and edit them back to a core of paintings that do not deviate from the central feeling I have maintained throughout the painting process. \nThe work is very much a diary of movement through thought and feeling\, and then revisiting of the idea of my purpose. In the past few years\, I have concentrated on paring back\, ensuring that the work is about the work itself\, the simplicity of practicing acts of love and the physicality of being in the studio every day. \nVisually I have intended for this body of work is joyful\, graphic\, strong\, confident. It’s midnight in Cambridge\, and Rosalind Brixton is awoken by the footsteps of three young men on her roof. They are the Night Climbers\, a secret society that gathers on the rooftops long after they should be in bed. Hungry for adventure\, Rosalind is quickly initiated into this night-time world of clandestine oaths\, cleverness\, politics\, and sex. But when this Bohemian new world is shattered by a horrific betrayal\, she must choose between keeping quiet and seeking revenge. \nClimbers is a powerful and poignant exploration of the barriers women face in traditionally male institutions\, and the strength\, courage\, and solidarity it takes to dismantle them. \nPhotos by Harrison Baker[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f18d97-066d”][vc_column_text]\nWriter: Elly D’Arcy\n\nDirector: Monique Marani\n\nCast: Meg Taranto\, Veronica Pena Negrette\, Eddie Orton\, Sebastian Li\, Charlie Veitch\, Tyallah Bullock\, Tahlia Jameson\, Lotte Beckett\, Vitoria Hronopoulous\, Milijana Cancar\, and Chris Broadstock\n\nProducer & Production Manager: Harry Dowling\n\nSound Designer: Justin Gardam\n\nSet & Costume Designer: Savanna Wegman\n\nLighting Designer: Georgie Wolfe\n\nStage Manager: Kelly Wilson\n\nAssistant Stage Manager: Karen Ng\n\n\nIntimacy Coordinator: Isabella Vadiveloo\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f18d97-066d”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $30\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

It is an attempt to capture the feeling of standing at the base of a mountain\, and feeling the presence of what our guide told us were the spirits of the mountains. Standing beneath their cold\, unyielding majesty\, it is hard to disagree that the mountains are indeed alive. \nAs an artist\, I wanted to capture the feeling of awe I felt when I first saw Machapuchare\, or Fishtail\, a mountain that is forbidden to climb and looms large over the Annapurna circuit. The sharp intake of breath\, followed by my eyes scanning\, focusing and readjusting repeatedly as I found more detail\, more mystery and more inspiration is a feeling I will chase for the rest of my life. \nTo create these works\, I’ve employed my entire skillset as a generative artist. \nI created a photorealistic simulation of the Himalayas\, including erosion\, sediment and debris. Once I was satisfied with the base terrain\, I scattered particles on the terrain and started to give them life and movement\, being careful not to lose the integrity of the mountains I was inspired by\, but also trying to reflect the feeling and spirit of what I saw\, not just a literal representation. \nIf I manage to capture a fraction of the awe I felt myself in Nepal\, then I’ve succeeded as an artist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kyle Minors is a generative 3D artist whose work is deeply inspired by the patterns and forms found in the natural world. A forceful drive arose in me at that time; an urgency to express all of the tensions and fantasies that unfolded in the aligning of myself more closely with the natural elements. In more recent works however\, such observed fragments are becoming subtly unmoored and detached from their original environment\, creating new visual narratives of a more uncertain nature. \nAs a result of several moves during the pandemic\, internal layers of difficulty emerged. Despite this discomfort\, I was deeply inspired by the rich colours and the tangible spiritual presence of Northern Territory landscapes. I was grappling with the unresolved impact of colonial invasion impacting Alice Springs\, particularly as I sought to understand more deeply the magnificence of land and its inhabitants of over 65\,000 years. Integrating my inspiration and awe for aboriginal culture and their historical reverence for land with the daily challenges that arose generated conflicting feelings. I began reflecting on the Baroque period as I felt my work aligned with this period’s dramatic illuminations of beauty\, gloom\, uncertain emotions and mystery. My own works became disorientating and abstract; destabilising the viewer in subtle ways by skewing shadows\, light & dark orientations\, foliage and scale; encouraging reflection on one’s internal terrain. Formal qualities and times of day are disparate\, sometimes visually cacophonous. The light can be unsettling and worlds collide creating schisms to the eye. \nIn relating closely to the term ‘Barocco’ meaning disfigured or oddly shaped pearl\, I feel that so long as we are living\, mortal beings\, the openings to inspire us closer into who we are\, may require the light’s counterpart of darkness to never desist. \nI would like to give thanks to those involved in the physical theatre piece created for opening night\, including Sophie Thompson and Dean West for joining me in creating Orison’s physical theatre piece. I would also like to thank Matty Vehl for his glorious voice in my song ‘We Ran Forever’ used for soundtrack\, Mischa Baka for producing and editing the sound and supporting me throughout all of my art creations. I would also like to thank Cleis Pearce for her magical spell binding soundtrack ‘Always’. I am grateful to all of my gorgeous friends who have supported me and my art and Lastly I would like to thank Tessa and the team at fortyfivedownstairs for making Orison possible\, and Otomys for representing me and my work. \nTo view Rebekah’s dance works relating to this current exhibition\, click the following links. \nPerpetual \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJGay8C8BoE \nAlways\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHJr2rhkdmA[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Melbourne-based contemporary artist Rebekah Stuart studied at The University of Melbourne (VCA) 1994 – 1997. Using photography as a tool she  reconstructs fragments of nature to develop fantastical landscapes that don’t exist in the real world. Rebekah explores alternative aesthetics to that which our eyes see in day-to-day life. This process allows her to push the boundaries of the imagination and blur the lines of reality and the otherworldliness which characterises her work. \nA more in-depth inspection of Rebekah’s photography reveals a deeper story; one which changes over extended periods of time\, as new elements become apparent and others grow distant to make way for new realisations. \n‘My images evolve in a similar fashion to that of a painter\, over a long duration.  \nThe fragments are built and refined so a new whole emerges\, disorienting the observer in a subtle way to reflect on their internal terrain. The landscapes reflect the horizons within – an intimate sublime for a time when wilderness is perhaps uninhabitable’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Some of these artworks are created without specific references\, while others are inspired by poses crafted with the help of live models. A few pieces take on an abstract style\, incorporating representational elements to establish a deep psychological connection with the subject’s pose and their innermost\, private movements. \nThese paintings aim to capture personal and private states\, reminding viewers of the joy and significance found in expressive human movement and the accompanying psychological experience. \nIn recent years\, I’ve embarked on a journey of rediscovery in my artistic process. Drawing from my previous experience\, I sought to reinvent myself while embracing artistic growth. This led me to engage with performance artists from different parts of the world\, forming creative relationships that influenced the direction of my work. This shift allowed me to explore new themes and approaches. \nPrimavera\, named after the season of spring\, represents both the darkness and coldness as well as the promise of warmth and sunlight. As an artist\, I believe in the importance of describing the world using various stylistic methods\, even if it means venturing beyond my comfort zone and challenging my understanding. I resist the limitations of predefined ideas or singular moments. \nBy experimenting with different compositions\, I manipulate abstract elements such as light and colour to incorporate both representational and nonrepresentational aspects in each piece. This guides the viewer into the essence of the chosen pose and establishes a connection. Through collaboration with subjects\, studio photography\, and drawings\, I bring together the materials and forms\, creating a unified theme. I work primarily with oil paint to capture the tactile quality of skin\, while drawing inspiration from various sources to play with the element of light in my paintings. \nApproaching figure and expression from an abstract perspective\, I aim to present the subject matter in a fresh and unfamiliar visual treatment\, inviting viewers to perceive it in new and compelling ways.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]John Mezzini’s CV \nExhibitions \n1994                      Graduates Exhibition group exhibition \n2019                       45 Downstairs solo “E lascia dir le genti” \n2019                       Art Basel Switzerland top 100 artworks “Ad Apicem” \n2019                       Art Box Miami \n2019                      Emerge Brunswick st Gallery – group exhibition \n2021                      45 Downstairs solo “mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um” Postponed to January 2022 \n2021                      Primo Red group Exhibition – C&H gallery \n2021                      Here again 45 Downstairs online group exhibition \n2021                      Aliorum portrait Exhibition – POME gallery \n2022                       45 Downstairs solo “Monumentum” \n2022                       RED Exhibition – POME gallery \nMedia \nMay 2019 Sunday Age – Art Sunday promotion solo exhibition “ELascia dir le Genti” \nApril 2019 Art Almanac promotion “ELascia dir le Genti” \nJune 2019 News fox Switzerland Australian Artist Awarded “Ad Apicem” \nNovember 2019 Penthouse Magazine online – Print Feb 2020 “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2020 Recorder south Australia “artist roller coaster” \nJanuary 2022 Penthouse Magazine online “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2022 Last post Magazine “Artist John Mezzini” \nSocials \nFacebook: johnmezzinart \nInstagram: jmezz1974[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Accompanied by The Song Company’s Francis Greep on grand piano\, Capsis will perform an intimate acoustic set of cabaret\, jazz\, and ragtime classics by Kurt Weill\, John Kander\, Billy Joel\, Elton John\, Melody Gardot\, Johnny Mercer and more\, with influences from Marianne Faithfull\, Jimmy Scott\, and Nina Simone. \nCapsis and Greep selected the program to take the audience on a deeply personal journey. A story of love gained\, love lost\, and strength found again\, told through an uncompromisingly honest and powerful evening of song! \n“It was Paul Capsis as Paul Capsis. Raw\, vulnerable and honest as he took us on what seemed to be a personal journey of his life through song.” Theatre Travels \n“Heart-stopping … Unforgettable.” Stage Noise \nPhoto by Warren Lee \n  \nOfficial Hotel Partner \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f15e35-76a3″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $55\nConcession: $45\nGroup 6+: $45\nTable for 4 (limited availability): $240 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nNO BOOKING FEE SURCHARGE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

They change and move subtlety as the times do. The past and future always echo in the present tense. \nJoin this family of storytellers – Uncle Larry Walsh\, Victoria Morphy\, Hannah Morphy-Walsh\, and Isobel Morphy-Walsh – as they weave creation\, song\, story\, and movement together to tell the big stories that travel through the generations. You know the ones. Today we are descendants using our history\, connections\, and worldview as guides. But tomorrow we will be ancestors being reinterpreted and told anew. \nHear songs of healing\, see harvest through dance\, hear of the platypus and how he connects to the spent criminal conviction act and the stolen generation\, hear words of weavers! \nPresented as part of the 2023 Yirramboi Festival.  \nThis production was commissioned by Yirramboi Festival and has received funding and support from Yirramboi Festival\, City of Melbourne and Creative Victoria through the Creative Projects Fund.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1a6e0-94ae”][vc_column_text]Devised and performed by: Isobel Morphy-Walsh\, Hannah Morphy-Walsh\, Larry Walsh\, and Vic Morphy \nDirection: Margie Mackay and Gilbert Douglas \nTechnical Production /stage Management: Douglas and Mackay \nMovement Mentor: Gilbert Douglas \nElder on project: Uncle Larry Walsh \nArtist Bio: Isobel Morphy-Walsh\, Hannah Morphy-Walsh\, and Uncle Larry Walsh are all proud nirim baluk people from the Taun Wurrung (Taungurung) Nation. Vic Morphy has an Australian settler heritage steeped in the bush\, football\, and Holden cars. Together they make up the Morphy-Walsh family. They are all known for a wide variety of things. Amongst this group there are 3 wordsmiths\, 2 weavers\, 3 storytellers\, 1 dancer\, 4 makers\, 2 song women\, 4 arts workers\, educators\, image makers\, activists\, and lovers of place and people.
