SUMMARY:Romantic Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text el_class=”ffds-gallery-artistname”]\nJustine McAllister\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”ffds-gallery-exhibitionname”]\nRomantic Rebellion\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text css=””]7 – 16 November 2024\n\nhours:\nTuesday – Friday: 12pm – 7pm\nSaturdays: 12pm – 4pm\nadmission: Free[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_tabs][vc_tta_section tab_id=”1518320329614-868977ba-1f9e905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″ title=”Description”][vc_column_text css=””]\n‘Romantic Rebellion’ is an artist’s love letter to freedom. This exhibition embodies a celebration of liberated chaos\, where conventions are dismantled and expectations are cast aside. \n  \nJustine McAllister has created the world she wishes to see around her: one of acceptance\, nourishment\, and creativity\, free from shame and pretence. The figures in her works are depicted amidst fragmented surroundings\, calmly unapologetic about their existence and accepting of those around them. They remain serene amidst the engulfing noise. \n  \nThis exhibition features paintings\, works on paper\, and beaded textile artworks. These pieces celebrate the human touch and the physical process of creation. In an era where technology and AI are homogenising creativity and diminishing human physicality\, McAllister’s art offers a warm sense of intimacy and connection. \n  \nBy challenging both external and internal pressures\, McAllister has embraced a new\, unbridled aesthetic that defies perfection\, encouraging a departure from imposed norms and self-restriction. Her work rebels against the modern pursuit of fame and flawlessness\, serving as a reminder of the beautiful chaos inherent in authentic human relationships. \n  \nImage credits: ‘Romantic Rebellion’ installation view\, 2024\, photographer: Shannyn Higgins[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]\nJustine McAllister is a notable contemporary painter from Ballarat\, Australia\, now based in Melbourne. Born in 1987\, she has garnered acclaim for her large-scale murals that blend figuration with abstraction. Her work is celebrated for its vibrant\, dynamic quality and distinctive colour palette that has become integral to her style. \n  \nEmploying brush and roller to create her murals\, McAllister delves into themes of human connection\, abundance\, and acceptance. She sees her art as a personal visual language\, a way to interpret the complex chaos of modern life. \n  \nA passionate advocate for public art\, McAllister believes it serves as a powerful alternative to commercial advertising\, offering perspectives from individuals rather than corporations. She views murals as contemporary time stamps\, reflecting the experiences and values of their creators. For McAllister\, the creation of art in public spaces holds great significance\, as she believes public art invites contemplation and should be readily accessible to everyone. \n‘Romantic Rebellion’ is McAllister’s second solo show\, where she integrates her mural practice with the contemporary gallery space. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707887446229-aca4af4e-555c”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night \nFriday 8 November\, 5-7pm \n  \nArtist Talk \nSaturday 16 November\, 1pm. \nHosted by fellow artist Jack Rowland and followed by a casual Q&A.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”ONLINE CATALOGUE” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F11%2FRomantic-Rebellion-JMc-2024.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her exhibition is a political stance in an area that she feels passionate about: Africa\, the pain and the beauty. \nBrigitte is a qualified art therapist and psychotherapist in private practice\, spanning 15 years. For the past 10 years\, she has worked in the area of ‘art as medicine’ with children; adolescents; adults; and recently\, orphans in Africa who have experienced trauma. She delivers her evidence-based art therapy program to help clients externalise their trauma. These traumas can be domestic violence\, sexual abuse\, loss of a parent to suicide and parental substance use. Brigitte is currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate. Her thesis research project qualitatively assesses the healing powers of art. She is also an educator at IKON Institute of Australia teaching Bachelors in Art Therapy and Psychotherapy; College of Applied Professions (ACAP) Masters of Psychotherapy; and James Cook University. Fabrics and threads are vessels that carry memories of family\, place and history. Fortyfivedownstairs gallery is situated in Flinders Lane on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong/ Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nations who have been making art and textiles for over 40\,000 years. More recently\, Flinders Lane was the centre of Melbourne’s clothing industry\, or ‘rag trade’. This textile history adds a layered backdrop to the exhibition. \nThe contributing artists use traditional and non-traditional needlework practices and materials in innovative ways within a fine arts practice. Each artist has meticulously worked and reworked textiles and threads\, offering expanded interpretations of history\, origins and place – honouring the past through preserving its memories while forging new narratives. \nThis exhibition has been supported by a City of Melbourne Arts Grant. \nImages: \n1. Textiles can hold memories and stories. Helvi uses industrial textiles to make artworks that blend the past and present. Her work delves into themes of grief\, change\, and embodied sensing. Through her work she connects the viewer and the artwork to explore broader social issues and human experience. She makes art that invites the viewer into a space for reflection. By using scale and materials\, Helvi wants viewers to be aware of their own bodies when they view her work. Helvi includes absurdist gestures in drawings\, movement and forms across her practice. This introduces elements of lightness and amusement. Helvi’s practice plays with the formal language of sculpture. She uses the flexibility of textiles to adapt the way that galleries traditionally exhibit and install artworks. Helvi Apted (Finnish/Australian) was born Djilang/Geelong. She has been a finalist in the Darebin Art Prize\, a recipient of the R.L. Foote Design Studio Award and the Masters Mentoring VCA Art Award. Helvi has exhibited at Blindside\, George Paton Gallery\, Trocadero Art Space\, Unassigned Gallery\, and the 2023 VCA Art Grad Show. Helvi is exhibiting at Linden New Art Project Space in October 2024. She is completing a Master of Contemporary Art at the VCA. \n  \nElise Cakebread \nElise Cakebread works across textiles\, sculpture\, installation and public art. Elise is driven by experimentation within traditional textile processes and techniques. Her work explores materiality\, tactility\, sustainability\, disposability\, and ornamentation. Through her artistic process\, Elise strives to achieve a form of true abstraction – an abstraction of materials that transcends their original context and significance. By repurposing discarded waste materials into intricate compositions\, she aims to strip away preconceived notions of value and utility\, allowing the inherent qualities of each material to shine through in unexpected and compelling ways. This approach not only challenges conventional definitions of abstraction but also invites viewers to contemplate the essence of materiality itself\, prompting a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things. Elise has collaborated with The Artling\, Gorman\, Dulux\, alt.material\, Local/Actual\, The Monolonglo Group\, SPACE furniture and Capella Sydney. Elise has exhibited at Linden New Art\, CRAFT Melbourne\, The Australian Tapestry Workshop\, Design Tasmania\, and The Australian Design Centre. She has been a finalist for the Northern Beaches Environmental Art Award and for the KAAF Art Award. Her work has been featured in Vogue Living\, Yellowtrace\, Grand Designs\, and The Design Files. \nElise holds a Bachelor of Arts – Textiles (with distinction) from RMIT (2012) and a Bachelor of Creative Arts from The Univeristy of Melbourne (2007). In 2022 Elise was awarded the Regional Arts Victoria Creative Fellowship. \n  \nJanelle Evans \nJanelle Evans (Dharug) is a multi-disciplinary visual artist\, curator and writer\, currently living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). Janelle’s work is informed by her cultural and ancestral connections to Country\, in which she seeks to question and disrupt the narrative of British and European first contact encounters\, and to create a counter-discourse to resultant mythologies that have formed in the national consciousness. Janelle has exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and biennales in Australia\, Japan and France and her works are held in public and private collections. Janelle has had artist residencies at Bundanon\, Tokyo Geidai\, and at Teerk-Roo-Ra\, in Queensland’s Moreton Bay. She has worked collaboratively with First Nations and other artists on several public and institutional art commissions for The State Library of Queensland\, The Australian War Memorial\, 4A Contemporary Asian Arts and Campbelltown Art Centre for the Sydney Festival. Janelle holds a PhD in Fine Art from Sydney College of the Arts\, University of Sydney and is currently Head\, Master of Contemporary Art at Victorian College of the Arts\, University of Melbourne. \n  \nRebecca George \nRebecca George is a Melbourne / Naarm based artist exploring patterns and shapes and connections between science\, nature and art. She has an engineering and manufacturing background and brings a love of process to her art practice. Repetition\, shadows\, mathematical shapes and perspective feature in her work. The use of found\, recycled or recyclable materials is important. She thinks through making. Rebecca started her art practice making hyperbolic crochet sculptures and is expanding it by introducing printmaking\, collage\, ceramics\, woodwork\, bronze casting and welding\, finding new applications for common materials. Rebecca won the Heide at Home Maquette Challenge in 2021. She was commissioned by Knox to be part of their Immerse Program in 2021 with an installation at Stamford Park Homestead. She has exhibited in Melbourne Design Fringe in 2021 and 2023\, and with Naarm Textiles Collective at fortyfivedownstairs and Assembly Point in 2022\, 2023 and 2024. Her work was included in the Australian Textile Art Award 2022. As a Grampian Arts tutor in 2023\, she exhibited at Ararat Gallery TAMA. Rebecca is completing a Master of Contemporary Art at the VCA in 2024. \n  \nPhong Chi Lai \nPhong Chi Lai (Studio PCL) is a Naarm/Melbourne-based designer/maker specialising in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork. Previously a shoe designer/maker\, Phong took the opportunity to work in textile-based social enterprises in Asia\, reinforcing his artisan ethos. Taking inspiration from these experiences\, he developed his textile practice upon returning to Australia in 2018. Using upcycled/deadstock fabrics and natural dyes\, Phong takes a considered and intuitive approach\, responding to materials and his surroundings. He applies traditional techniques; hand-quilting\, assemblage and patchwork with an overtly free hand approach to build compositional complexity. Phong  has exhibited at The Wangaratta Art Gallery\, QuiltCon (USA)\, School House Studios Gallery\, Linden New Art Gallery and The Australian Tapestry Workshop. In her textile practice\, she explores her surroundings and interprets what she sees through embroidery. Her work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom\, Netherlands\, Canada and Australia. Tamara’s practice engages with the natural environment recreating images and shapes in her embroidered works in 2 and 3D form. In her work she is able to portray social issues including environment\, climate change and the treatment of asylum seekers. Textiles are the perfect medium for expressing thoughts using hand and machine stitching. Tamara works with found materials and finds joy in the unexpected uses that can be found for them. She loves this unpredictability and enjoys the inventiveness necessary to transform them. She uses materials that are reclaimed\, things with a history that have been discarded and might otherwise end up in landfill. Tamara was invited to Curtain Springs for a residency in 2019\, a finalist in the John Villiers Art Prize 2021 and the Australian Textile Art Award 2022 along with exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions. Her recent projects include facilitating the Moreland Quilt in 2017 – a community arts project\, exhibiting in Melbourne galleries and teaching workshops in hand embroidery\, free machine embroidery\, mending skills and garment reinvention. She also accepts  commissions to mend other people’s favourites. Tamara is founder of the Naarm Textile Collective\, curating their bi-annual exhibitions\, a member of the Embroiderers Guild Victoria\, Society for Embroidery Work (S.E.W.)\, Craft Victoria and Melbourne & Victorian Arts Inc (MAVA). Visit karhina.com or follow her on Instagram @karhina_textileart and @tamararussellart \n  \nBritt Salt \nBritt Salt works across tapestry\, drawing\, sculpture\, installation and public art. Her works are complex in their construction and minimal in aesthetic\, exploring site-specific and imagined architectures. Using intuitive geometry and hand-crafted methodical processes\, Salt traces the intricacies of order in public and private space\, internal and external worlds and increasingly uncertain environments. Salt has exhibited at CRAFT\, Melbourne; Linden New Arts; Town Hall Gallery\, Hawthorn; Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery; and PICA\, Perth. She has received prestigious awards such as the Art & Australia Emerging Artist Award\, Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship\, and Kate Derum Award. Salt has undertaken residencies at the Australian Tapestry Workshop; Youkobo\, Japan; Arteles\, Finland; Heima\, Iceland; and Red Gate Gallery\, Beijing. She has created major public artworks for Melbourne International Airport\, Tsinghua University Beijing\, and Fender Katsalidis Architects. Salt holds a Masters of Contemporary Art (First Class) from Victorian College of the Arts (2023) and Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours- First Class) from Curtin University of Technology. Collections include Wangaratta Art Gallery; University of Melbourne; Justin Art House Museum; and Artbank. She was recently awarded the Fiona Myer White Story Residency 2024. \n  \nShannon Slee \nShannon Slee is a contemporary artist living and working on Wurrundjeri Woi-Wurrung land in Melbourne’s north. Shannon has a fascination with the deconstruction and reparation of cloth to create textile works that considers intimacy to connect with conditions of the human experience. Informed by feminist theories\, she presents clothing as a direct representation of the body’s experience. Unpicking and piecing together discarded clothing with fabric remnants\, she creates textile sites that not only trace histories but materially links\, joins and attaches us to them. Shannon recently completed a Masters in Contemporary Art with first class honours at Victoria College of the Arts at Melbourne University. She has exhibited at The Australian Tapestry Workshop\, VCA grad-show\, VCA Artspace\, Linden New Art Project Space and George Paton Gallery. She is exhibiting at Linden New Art Project Space in October 2024. Ness’s photographs\, rich in detail and emotion\, invites viewers to witness the aftermath of the fire’s fury and the subsequent rebirth. \nThe bushfire of 2023 left an indelible mark on Tyagarah Nature Reserve\, altering its landscape and ecosystems in profound ways. “Aftermath” is a call to action\, urging viewers to consider the impact of their actions on the planet and to appreciate the fragile beauty of nature. \n  \nImage caption: Silenced Witness (Giving voice to our most vulnerable inhabitants)[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]More details coming soon…[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707888249779-1c562d92-abb0″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night \nTuesday 8th of October\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In Valimberti’s paintings\, she works to transform the mundane into something quietly beautiful through traditional oil painting. \nDrawing attention to the gaze\, Valimberti alludes to the historical context of depicting the figure and subtly challenges conventional perspectives. \nNuance and contemplation of the moment are captured\, unpacked and re-assembled here. The body is often not depicted whole\, but a glimpse or fragment is provided from which the viewer can construct a story. Her paintings emphasise ambiguity\, inviting the viewers’ interpretation and imaginative faculty in the portrayal of the figure. \nValimberti’s paintings convey a sense of introspection and sensitivity through the handling of light\, tone\, and texture. \nImage #1: Secondhand Sheets\, Elena Valimberti\, oil on linen\, 158.75 x 104.14cm\nImage #2: Walter\, Elena Valimberti\, oil on linen\, 146 x 108cm\nImage #3: Garden Party\, Elena Valimberti\, oil on board\, 60cm diameter[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]More details coming soon…[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707888535933-4f426886-be75″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night \nTuesday 10th of September\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Through Rose’s photographic works\, film\, printmaking\, painting and installations\, the potentiality for environmental recovery is explored by posing questions around land use and conservation in the Australian context. This body of work critically explores the impact of colonial systems on the environment\, through transdisciplinary research that blends Rose’s artistic practice with scientific inquiry. Rose seeks to inspire a sense of reverence for the beauty and resilience of the natural world and invites the viewer to engage with the importance of addressing intertwined ecological and cultural injustices. \nFeatured in the exhibition is the critically threatened Murnong Yam Daisy\, traditionally a staple food source for First Nations Peoples. The Murnong has been severely affected by consequences of intensive colonial agricultural methods and loss of traditional land management practices by First Nations Peoples due to colonial occupation. The photographic works Murnong Daisy Passage and Murnong Daisy Rising\, depict the once thriving Murnong emerging from a clump of wheat within a fabricated imperial steel vessel\, set against the backdrop of canola fields located on the fringe of Lake Tyrrell (Direl)\, Victoria. The imperial vessel symbolises the imposition of foreign agricultural practices that disrupt traditional ecological balances. This visual metaphor poignantly illustrates the Murnong’s precarious existence amid landscapes altered by colonial systems. Informed by eco-feminism\, post humanism\, and non-representational theories in geography Rose leads us to the works\, Unveiling Echoes Rorschach and Unveiling Echoes.  In these works\, Rose evaluates the colonial exploitation of landscapes and emphasises the need for restorative ecological practices\, embracing Indigenous knowledge\, truth telling and critiquing patriarchal structures of colonial systems that perpetuate environmental and cultural degradation. \nExtending the narrative\, Rose’s film\, Scar\, Mallee Rally\, Lake Tyrrell (Direl) draws our attention to the recreational off-road motor sport\, the ‘Mallee Rally’\, an 85-kilometre racing circuit around the foreshore of Lake Tyrrell (Direl). Since 1974\, the Mallee Rally has expanded to include unprecedented numbers of racing motor vehicles\, spectators\, private vehicles\, caravans and camping over the lakes dunes\, ironically calendared on the Queen’s (King’s) Birthday long weekend. \nLake Tyrrell (Direl) is Victoria’s largest inland salt-lake\, a significant biodiverse and cultural landscape\, covering approximately 20\,860 hectares and located North of the town of Sea Lake\, Victoria. Through Rose’s photographic documentation of the environmental destruction wrought by the rally and proposed construction of a caravan park close to the shoreline\, multiple submissions to Federal and State environmental departments have been made in collaboration with local and First Nation Peoples lobby groups amid concern for the lack of environmental and cultural protection. \nAfter fifty-two years of environmental destruction\, in 2019\, after mounting pressure a permit for the Mallee Rally was denied\, Lake Tyrrell (Direl) had time for respite. A stop works order was placed on the caravan park development and subsequent appeals were denied in 2023. Rose’s dedication to the long-term protection of Lake Tyrrell continues\, the film works Respite\, Lake Tyrrell (Direl) and Unveiling Echoes\, serve as documentation of environmental recovery and the importance of advocacy for the protection of Lake Tyrrell (Direl). Rose is pleased to announce that her 2024 PhD graduate research is centred on Lake Tyrrell (Direl). \nFor over two decades Rose has been in the process of discovering her ancestral histories. Her inquiry led her to the shoreline of Lake Tyrrell (Direl) where her ancestors worked in the colonised salt factory and adjoining sheep and wheat farms. She came to learn that she is of Irish heritage\, and that her grandfather Laurence Taggert was born in Sea Lake. Rose continues to search for the broken ancestral lines in her personal histories. \nRose is the founder of the art therapy program Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne and international published author of ‘Finding Peace with Death and Dying in Everyday Life’. Rose’s occupational history led her to discover that art could be therapy\, and the natural environment a place of healing and worth protecting. In 2019 after an extensive career as an art therapist\, and international lecture on death and dying\, Rose recommenced study at the University of Melbourne\, with a focus on Art Ecology. Rose’s work is held in private collections in Australia\, UK\, USA\, Turkey\, Uzbekistan\, Ukraine\, Sweden\, Russia\, Malaysia\, India\, Singapore\, China and by First Nations Peoples Australia. \n  \nImage 1 Murnong Daisy Passage to Seeding Hope\, archival pigment print 310gsm 100% cotton rag photographic paper Edition of 3 +AP Imperial carriage\, murrnong\, wheat and canola field. It is literally a three dimensional memoir of events & experiences that display a distinctly feminine visual signature and addresses everyday situations such as parenting\, mundane chores\, chauvinism\, suicide\, family\, cosmetic enhancement and humorous incidents. The individual sculptures reflect the feminine sensuality and struggle of women whilst revealing the conflict between necessity and the desire to pursue goals. \nThe media used are mostly Australian hardwoods which have traditionally been a primarily male dominated choice of material. Girls were not allowed to do woodwork when I attended school so becoming a High school woodwork/metal/Visual Arts teacher in the chauvenistic 1980’s was instrumental in providing inspiration for many aspects in this collection of works. “Just a Sheila” resembles a visual timeline of varied life experiences and random incidental moments in time. These recycled hardwood timbers are physically demanding and time consuming to work with but resolution always results in strong forms & exquisite unpredictable surfaces. The flaws & cracks are accentuated & appreciated as they enhance the fragility & strength of the subject matter. A combination of techniques involving resins\, metal\, found objects\, stenciling & paint are also incorporated in the artworks. \nEarly exposure to the sculptures of Rodin\, Louise Bourgeois\, Inge King\, Bronwyn Oliver\, Giacometti and classical figures were instumental in inspiring my passion for sculptural form. \nA series of mix media drawings that relate to a variety of life experiences also accompany the sculptures. \n  \n– Artworks are currently held in Private & public collections in Australia\, Berlin\, New York & Italy. \n– Overseas exhibitions – New York\, Barcelona\, Paris\, Rotterdam\, Italy (Florence\, Capri\, Naples & Palermo in Sicily) \n  \nImage 1: Expectations\, Domestic Torso series\, Josie Lowerson\, stringybark and paint\, 100cm H\, 21kg\nImage 2: Bloodlines\, Josie Lowerson\, grey box and hoop pine\, 1700cm H\nImage 3: Just a Shiela\, Josie Lowerson\, jarrah and paint\, 80cm H\nImage 4: Bowerbird conspiracy\, Josie Lowerson\, mixed media and grey box\, 57cm H\nImage 5: Hanky Head\, Josie Lowerson\, white cedar and paint\nImage 6: Rabbiter\, Josie Lowerson\, Silver Valley box and found objects\, 1800cm H[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]BIOGRAPHY – JOSIE LOWERSON \n2024 – Solo exhibition\, Just a Sheila\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Flinders Lane\, Melbourne \n2022 – Display of sculptures at Lenny Street eatery/wine bar\, Tolga\, Queensland \n2019 – Exhibition\, SMALL\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Flinders Lane\, Melbourne\n– Exhibition\, Paper & Sticks\, O.P.O Gallery\, Atherton (with printmaker Bek Honeyman) \n2017 – Exhibition\, Contemporary ‘17\, Gallery Etienne de Causans\, Rue de Seine\, Paris\, France\n– Exhibition\, Capri-Isle of Art\, Villa La Floridiana\, Isle of Capri\, Italy\n– Workshop (Cairns) with Australian artist Abdul Abdullah\n– Member of Australian Womens Art Register\, Richmond\, Melbourne\, Victoria \n2016 – Exhibition\, Pazzi per Napoli at Castel dell Óvo\, Naples\, Italy\n– International Art Fair\, Rotterdam\, Netherlands\n– Exhibition\, Eight by Ten\, KickArts Contemporary Art Gallery\, Cairns\, Australia\n– Tolga Woodworks Gallery\, display of sculptures \n2015 – International Art Fair\, Paris 015 Art Salon\, Carrousel Du Louvre\, Paris\, France\n– Exhibition\, Get Kicking\, KickArts Contemporary Art Gallery\, Cairns\, Australia\n– Exhibition\, Bienal De Arte\, Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona\, Spain\, opened by Jose Van Roy Dali (heir of Surrealist artist Salvador Dali)\n– Exhibition\, Florence Art\, International Collective\, Guicciardini Bongianna\, Florence\, Italy\n– Exhibition\, 2nd International Biennale\, Palazzo Sant Elia\, Palermo\, Sicily \n2014 – Art residency\, Galleria Monteoliveto\, Naples & Pollena Trocchea in Italy\n– Solo Exhibition\, The Great Art Hunt\, Interactive childrens event\, Cairns Art Gallery \n2013 – Exhibition\, Portals of Perception\, Agora Gallery\, West 25th Street\, Chelsea\, New York\, U.S.A.\n– Organiser of “Art Aid”\, project supplying art-packs to underprivileged schools in East Timor\n– Queensland local finalist in NEITA Excellence in Teaching Award (Art) \n2012 – Exhibition\, Birds of a Feather\, Cairns Art Gallery\, Queensland (Patron – Chinese Association) \n2011 – Walk to Art Tour\, New York\, U.S.A.\n– Award\, Queensland Government International Year of the Woman\, “Ordinary women / Extraordinary lives”\n– Exhibition\, Language of Art\, Carrington Art Gallery\, Noosa\, Queensland \n2010 – Solo Exhibition\, Attire\, Cairns Art Gallery \n2007 – Form Sculptors of North Queensland\, Display of two sculptures in windows of Cairns Art Gallery \n2005 – Exhibition\, Women in Action\, Foyer Gallery\, Atherton \n2002 – Exhibition\, Atrium Gallery\, Paradise Palms\, Palm Cove \n2001 – Solo exhibition\, Extracted\, Cairns Art Gallery \n1998 – Exhibition\, Works on Paper\, Bendigo Art Gallery\, Non-acquisitive Award Winner \n1997 – Exhibition\, Sandhurst Trustees Women Sculptors\, Capitol Theatre\, Bendigo\, Finalist\, Sculptural works selected by Inge King\n– Exhibition\, Finalist\, Works on Paper\, Bendigo Art Gallery\, Victoria\n– Organisation & construction of sculptural “Peace Garden”\, Barkly Street\, Bendigo\, Victoria \n1996 – Exhibition\, Second Agenda\, Convent Gallery\, Daylesford\n– Worked on Artist in Residence program (C.C.B. Written for and performed by Brigid Gallacher (In The Club and Things I Know To Be True at Theatreworks) and Charles Purcell (Apokalypsis at The Substation and The Inheritance at fortyfivedownstairs)\, Milk and Blood present unflinching examinations into violence and desire\, shame and self sabotage\, and the power of redemption. \nMilk tells the story of Mummy\, a young mother whose unconditional love for her incarcerated son\, Boy\, has led her to staunchly defend his violent sexual crimes. Through monthly visits to Boy\, Mummy meditates on redemption\, motherhood and accountability. While her faith is tested\, her love for him endures. \nBlood tells the story of Daddy\, an experienced sex worker and professional Dom who has devoted his life to caring for\, teaching\, and protecting the queer community. It depicts nature alongside roads as seen through bus or car windows\, as well as moments when captured on walks through public parks and local reserves. They represent samples of time\, fleeting scenes which reflect on the transience of nature – these landscapes even though they are ordinary they presage threats from development\, overuse and pollution. The works in the exhibition describe meditations on movement and stillness\, celebrating the temporal nature of our passage through space. Some works are revealed as dynamic gestures and some are more contemplative. \n  \nImage captions: \nPark Walk\, Michele Burder\, 2023\, oil on panel\, 51 x 51cm \nBus 508 Wilson Street\, Michele Burder\, 2024\, oil on linen\, 91 x 91cm \nRoute B121 #1 and #2\, 2024\, Michele Burder\, oil on linen\, each 97 x 97cm \nPath NW3 7JN\, Michele Burder\, 2023\, pen and ink on watercolor paper\, framed  48 x 38cm \nM1 Ring Road\, Fyansford Dusk\, Michele Burder\, 2024\, oil on linen\, 50 x 50cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]\nMichele Burder is an artist working in Naarm/Melbourne. The pieces merge abstract art\, poetry and guided meditation\, taking viewers on an introspective journey exploring the terrain of one’s heart. Examining a broad array of emotions and states that lies on the surface or hidden deep within\, the pieces act as an anchor to take your consciousness to the heart space to promote self-awareness and discovery. \nInspiration for Heartscape comes from a practice of meditation\, allowing the themes and words to emerge and be transferred onto the canvas without judgment and social constructs. This allows an honest expression to come to fruition in a physical form for the viewer to experience\, and touch their senses. \nThe artist’s signature paint strokes are created in a movement like rhythmic Tai-chi\, it is an expression of energy rather than trying to create a beautiful stroke. It expresses honest beauty\, rawness\, and ugly. The aim is not to create something aesthetically pleasing\, but to emit the energy of each gifted theme. To capture the energy of the emotion that comes up. By moving through each theme without logically placing a label of negative / positive or sad / happy it allows one’s heart to breathe\, giving it space to just be as they are. It’s a practice resisting the knee-jerk action of jamming one’s heart into an ‘always happy’ box. The aim of Heartscape is to create a place where your heart can just BE. \nImage 1: Cup Runneth Over\, Melinda Ly\, August 2022\, acrylic on canvas\, 56 x 81cm\nImage 2: Inner Landscape\, Melinda Ly\nImage 3: Diver\, Melinda Ly\, December 2021\, acrylic on canvas\, 91 x 122cm\nImage 4: Rose\, Melinda Ly\, August 2022\, acrylic on canvas\, 116 x 116cm\nImage 5: Rise from the Mud\, Melinda Ly\, April 2022\, acrylic on pine wood\, 90 x 120cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]As an abstract artist I explore the intersection of abstract art and meditation. Like a moth to a flame\,\ncolour\, is the initial spark\, inspiration of her imagination. Colour differentiates and\nindividuates spaces and places\, Tone\, Hue\, and Texture\, follow. The peripheral and\nsensual activation of the senses\, smell\, taste\, touch\, sound\, come later\, colour\nprecedes all. From the innumerable locations discovered\, over the many expeditions\nin search of the next encounter around the next corner\, these photographs testify an\nongoing commitment and curiosity to her practice. \nSeemingly instinctual decisions\, made on the fly\, ensure an authenticity to her\nmethodology. Photographs presented\, all shot on Ektrachrome 120mm film\, in\npreference to the Digital format\, ensuring a freshness of Image. You\, the viewer\, are\npresented with the best opportunity to experience what Gamvros has been\ncourageous enough to seek\, encounter and record. Fresh and fast\, instantaneous\,\ndecisions are made and actioned on site\, in double quick time. \nLocations\, presented in this exhibition include Spain\, Portugal\, Greece\, Morocco\nThailand\, Malaysia and the USA. The recurring theme\, “Everyday Activity\,” within\nbuilt environments\, communities gather\, buy\, sell and share amongst other things\nfood from the smallest of markets\, back lanes\, canteens and restaurants\, offering\nlocal and seasonal produce\, as it has always been done. Seeking and reflecting the\ncolour of Built Environments that influence all those who live and work there. This is\nthe colour of space and place that Gamvros seeks\, perceives and now presents\nthrough her photography. \nEnjoy… \nImage 1: Post Covid Singapore Central Market\, Joanne Gamvros\, 2022\nImage 2: Malaysia Car Red\, Joanne Gamvros\, 2014\nImage 3: New York Mist Central Park\, Joanne Gamvros\, 2009\nImages 4-7: Greece Athens set\, On Call\, Joanne Gamvros\, 2000[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Jo is the co-owner of Bar Lourinhã Melbourne\, where she runs the front of house team. Elegies takes us on a musical journey that explores the modern world that we live in and life’s infinite joys. \nThis production features four celebrated performers – Nadine Garner (The Blake Mysteries)\, Kerrie Anne Greenland (Miss Saigon)\, Marty Alix (Hamilton)\, Anton Berezin (The Phantom of the Opera)\, and Glenn Hill (Matilda) – who take on a variety of roles across an 80-minute journey of constant transformation. In each character\, we respond to echoes of those closest to us\, our family\, and our friends\, as well as the family we choose. \nThe debut production of Clovelly Fox Productions and acclaimed director Tyran Parke promises to be something special.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1baf6-d1a7″][vc_column_text css=””]Cast: Nadine Garner\, Kerrie Anne Greenland\, Marty Alix\, Anton Berezin\, and Glenn Hill \nDirector: Tyran Parke \nMusical Director: Vicky Jacobs \nChoreographer: Freya List \nProducer: Pella Gregory \nProduction Manager: Jasmine Doak \nStage Manager: Lexi Jaensch \nSet/Costumes Designer: Miki Looker \nLighting Designer: Tom Vulcan \nSound Designer: Jack Scandrett \nProjection Design: Martyn Coutts \nProjection Design assistant: Lara Gabo[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1baf6-d1a7″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $55\nFull: $69\nConcession: $55\nGroup 8+: $55 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

But architecture also occupies time. In this instance\, not old or new\, or the clock-time so conveniently measured by our phones\, but by the liminal space of collective memory and potential futures. This ensures the pursuit of ‘newness’ in architecture is as dangerous as Homer’s attraction to the alluring song of the Sirens. \nSo\, how do you make something Brand New? \nThe exhibition explores this proposition through a series of six NH projects\, recently completed and in mid-flight. Most notably the redevelopment of the Queen Victoria Market and Arts Centre Melbourne. Both endeavours engage the challenges of respecting Naarm’s ecologies\, geographies and multiple histories whilst foregrounding each project’s onward journey. \nArchitecture is a slow art form with long gestation periods followed by the chaotic act of designing and making. When created at the scale of public and city architecture\, it involves respect for Country\, an array of collaborators\, a network of disciplines and the demands of multiple decision-makers. \nThe exhibition reveals how the NH Studio has developed a working method using tactics\, strategy and tools to deal with large-scale legacy projects. Where ideas are located between formative concept drawings and the rebounding pragmatics inherent in a project’s construction. In this nonlinear process\, knowledge can be generated simultaneously at different junctions of a problem. Design can therefore equally occur within the pragmatics of a construction program as in the theoretical realm of applied research. \nTo quote the title of a recent exhibition by American artist Cy Twombly\, it is the process of ‘Making Past Present’. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]NH Architecture is a leading Australian group of architects and designers working in a collaborative\, open forum. This grew to a focused visual interest and wonder in all trees. \nInitial black and white drawings evolved to include colour\, folding and embossing of the paper\, emphasising the flow and movement of foliage and branches and giving a sense of dimension and depth. These elements and interests are influenced and continuing from my theatre and dance design practice with the added importance of lighting to give shadow and dimension. \nAll the drawings are based on and inspired by real trees\, though I am mostly drawn to those with a particular and unusual character\, spirit and shape or strong individual patterning of bark and trunks. \nAll the trees were discovered and observed on walks around Melbourne including the gardens behind the NGV\, the Botanic Gardens\, Royal Park and many local walks during COVID lockdowns. Later more distant walks included Sherbrooke Forest and East Warburton where I rekindled my love and fascination with tree ferns. \nI prefer having sections of the original unmarked paper showing in the drawings and although the later drawings fill the entire sheet of paper with pastel markings there is always some rubbing back revealing the original paper and light surface below. \nImages: Arboreal series\, Michael Pearce\, 2023\, pastel on Velin Arches 300gsm paper[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Michael Pearce is a visual artist \,theatre set and costume designer and occasional performer\, designing for dance and drama companies in Australia New Zealand\, Asia and Europe. His large Vietnam inspired drawing installation Flow was exhibited at at the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick in 2000 and then Hanoi in 2002. \nUnwrapped Hong Kong exhibited at fortyfivedownstairs in 2013 was developed from twice being Artist in Residence teaching at The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and exhibiting in HK. Michael has also been a guest teacher at WAAPA and The Victorian College of the Arts. \nMichael’s previous exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs Unfolding in 2019\, introduced his interest in folding and embossing the drawings which developed from his stage design practice making set design models. \nHe has designed for many theatre and dance companies from Dance North in Townsville to the Netherlands Dance Theatre and is the recipient of three Victorian Green Room Awards for Best Dance Design – all designs for The Australian Ballet. \nThis is Michael’s first exhibition focused entirely on drawing trees though his last stage designs\, for Stephen Baynes Night Path for the Australian Ballet and Douglas Wright’s The Kiss Inside in Auckland\, both featured large sculptural tree elements. \nwww.michaelpearcemelbourne.com\nInstagram michaelpearcemelbourne \nEDUCATION\nDiploma in Art (Teaching) – South Australian School of Art 1967\nBachelor of Arts Degree (Drama\,English\, Fine Arts) Flinders University\, Adelaide 1970 \nSOLO EXHIBITIONS\nUnfolding\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2019\nLacuna\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2015\nUnwrapped Hong Kong\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2013\nFluid\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2011\nHong Kong Unwrapped\, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts Gallery 2009\nFlow\, Nha Trien Lam/Exhibition House\, Hanoi Vietnam 2002\nFlow\, Harbourside\, Darling Harbour\, Sydney Gay Games Cultural Festival 2002\nFlow\, a drawing installation Counihan Gallery in Brunswick 2000\nWorks On Paper\, Scope Gallery\, Melbourne 1995\nDrawings\, Firestation Community Arts Centre\, Dandenong Vic 1993\nDrawings\, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery\, Townsville Qld 1992\nDrawings\, Adelaide Festival Centre\, Adelaide 1992\nDrawings\, Malthouse Gallery\, Malthouse Theatres\, Melbourne 1991\nStranded Shores\, Reconnaissance Gallery\, Melbourne 1987\nDrawings\, University Gallery\, Adelaide University\, Adelaide 1978 \nGROUP EXHIBITIONS\n45 at 45\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2017\nEclectic St.\, Easey St Artist Studios 2017\nIdentity\, Midsumma\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2011\nConstellations – A Large Number of Small drawings\, RMIT Gallery 2010\nThree by Three –designs for AB’s Interplay\, Vic Arts Centre 2008\nDrawn to the Stage\, Victorian Arts Centre Gallery 2007\n308b an exhibition of five artists\, Counihan Gallery in Brunswick 2001\nN.A.V.A. Beginning with a diploma of art and design at Caulfield Tech Clive went on to complete a major in painting. \nHe then worked for a wide variety of theatre companies as a designer\, painter\, props maker and stage hand\, including four years working on stadium shows with the Walt Disney Company that toured throughout Australia\, New Zealand\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan and Japan. \nDuring this time he developed an interest in the forms of cultural imperialism represented by American entertainment productions. These working-class reflections on cultural forces were also developed through travelling and artistic observation. Clive travelled widely in a pre-globalisation era\, when much of the world still retained strong national identities represented through clothing\, imagery and costume. \nA journal practice of frequent drawing and photography emerged to document these rare experiences\, building up folios of notes and references that would create a wealth of reference material for Clive to draw on in future paintings. \nAlongside these travels\, he developed a significant career as an art director in the emerging Australian film and television industry with roles on productions such as The Sullivans in 1976\, Against the Wind\, Ned Kelly\, Road Games\, The Blue Lagoon filmed in Fiji in 1979\, continuing with Strikebound\, Kangaroo\, Five Mile Creek\, Round the Twist etc. Following a move to New Zealand\, Clive worked as an art director on the 90s US TV series Hercules\, which sparked a keen interest in Greek mythology. \nOn his return to Australia Clive built a studio at home so he could concentrate on his own painting. He continues to work as a specialist scenery painter and scenic artist in film and television on shows such as Shantaram\, The Dry\, Dirt Music\, The Newsreader\, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart etc. \nClive has maintained a decades long studio practice as an oil painter\, and in 2010 he staged his first self titled solo exhibition of large canvases at 1000 Pound Bend gallery in Melbourne CBD. This was followed in 2018 by Light and GLOOM at Neon Parlour in Thornbury. In 2023 he held a third successful solo show In Reality at a Fitzroy gallery. In 2024 he shows new paintings in his exhibition more than this at fortyfivedownstairs gallery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707889612488-51f9dd9f-ea8d”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night\nTuesday 18th June\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”VIEW FULL ONLINE CATALOGUE” color=”warning” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Ffile%2Fd%2F1MsKChbn7zUI_YWvvvux_mpvquUbAmGFC%2Fview%3Fusp%3Ddrive_link”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
