These are rehearsed readings\, with a changing ensemble. The Highly Strung Players began appearing at fortyfivedownstairs in 2017. \nThe Innominable – a new play to be performed by Georgina Banks and Ellie Nielsen – introduces us to twin sisters in their fifties. They are waiting to collect their mother’s ashes. One of them (Glen-Rae) was named at birth. The other – known as the Innominable – was never named. Now she wants to know why. \nThe Siegfried Idyll – a duologue to be performed by Peter Rose and Claudio Bozzi – presents a seemingly contented gay couple contemplating the seismic repercussions of ‘a night at the opera’. Conrad is a capricious restaurateur\, Toby a long-suffering arborist. The Siegfried Idyll had one performance at fortyfivedownstairs in December 2024. \n“The Highly Strung Players’ original absurdist works are playful\, witty and multi-layered. Renowned wordsmith Peter Rose has a fine sense of what lies beneath the surface of relationships and social interaction. His clever duologues highlight our foibles and delusions with sensitivity and humour.” Helen Morse[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1a37e-8afc”][vc_column_text css=””]Georgina Banks – a writer\, facilitator\, and performer – was a professional actor in her twenties\, studying acting in New York and then working in theatre and television for over a decade (including Sydney Theatre Company\, Playbox\, Theatre South\, A Country Practice\, and Outback). In 2023\, she published her first book\, Back to Bangka. She began appearing with the Highly Strung Players in 2025. \nClaudio Bozzi has made two appearances with the Highly Strung Players: All Those Sunsets (2023) and The Siegfried Idyll (2024). A barrister and legal academic\, he is currently writing a book on the legalities of the Ukraine War. He prefers to spend the southern winter harvesting hay on his farm in Italy. \nEllie Nielsen holds a degree from VCA drama school and a Master of Creative Writing from RMIT University. As a Naarm (Melbourne)-based actor\, writer and dramaturg\, her work focuses on new and independent theatre. She is the author of the internationally published memoir\, Buying a Piece of Paris\, and has performed with the Highly Strung Players since 2023. \nPeter Rose is a poet\, novelist and memoirist. Attention\, Please! (2025) is his seventh book of poetry. Rose Boys\, a family memoir\, won the 2003 National Biography Award. He founded the Highly Strung Players in 1989 and revived it in 2017. Their bond is fragile — some close\, others linked more by memory than friendship. When one of their own announces his transition\, the circle begins to fracture. Loyalties splinter\, old wounds reopen\, and the meaning of identity and belonging is fiercely contested. \nFunny\, sharp\, and deeply human\, The Placeholder explores how feminism\, friendship\, and chosen family collide — and how love is tested when those closest to us change in ways we never expected. \nDirected by Kitan Petkovski (The Inheritance) and performed by an extraordinary ensemble\, The Placeholder is a fearless and emotionally charged work about the radical act of living truthfully in a world that resists change. \nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria\, and has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ec55-c59a”][vc_column_text css=””]Writer: Ben MacEllen \nDirector: Kitan Petkovski \nCast: Oliver Ayres\, Meredith Rogers\, Brigid Gallacher\, Rebecca Bower\, Michelle Perera\, and Alessandra Merlo \nProducer: 5 Foot Entertainment | Chelsey Weisz \nSet and Costume Designer: Bethany J Fellows \nLighting Designer: Tim Bonser \nSound Designer: Ian Moorhead \nStage Manager: Charlotte Fischer \nDramaturgy Consultant: Kate Mulvany \nDirecting Intern: Grace McLaughlin \nHero image: Meagan Harding \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ec55-c59a”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $45\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39\nEARLYBIRD: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. A pivotal age of finding a place in my identity\, growing in my power as a woman\, navigating my morals\, beliefs\, relationships and solidifying my belonging in the world. My ideas arrive intuitively\, pulled from unique and transformative experiences that shifted how I see myself and the world around me. The ideas are executed through the art of surrealism\, where imagery becomes whimsical\, thought provoking\, and delightfully out of the ordinary.  I move between seriousness and playfulness in both life and art\, and I have always been drawn to childlike cartoons and dreamlike animation. That influence naturally spills into the work. \nFor this exhibition\, my focus was on self discovery\, so I naturally gravitated toward self portraits\, often nude. I like the idea of painting myself naked in both an exposing and vulnerable way\, as I discuss personal topics\, and also in a self appreciative\, therapeutic way\, where I’ve found that doing nude self portraits gave me a new appreciation and love for myself and my appearance. I am heavily influenced by music\, where it’s extremely common for musicians to make songs about themselves and their feelings and experiences\, and so I’ve taken those concepts and applied them to my art practice and now use art as a medium to talk about myself.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Micca is a self-taught oil painter born and raised in Perth\, Western Australia\, who moved to Melbourne in 2022. With a natural inclination toward creativity\, she recalls drawing as early as four years old\, finding joy in learning how to capture different objects and discovering new techniques to express the visions she imagined. At sixteen\, she experimented with oil paint for the first time and instantly fell in love with its richness and depth. Having never received formal art training\, Micca chose to explore her artistic path independently\, guided by intuition and curiosity. In 2022\, she held her first solo exhibition and is set to present her second in 2026. \nInfluenced by artists such as Mark Ryden\, Shaun Tan\, and Miles Johnston\, Micca believes art is limitless; free from rules\, categories\, or boundaries. She found everyday life to be repetitive and mundane\, and combined with growing up in an emotionally chaotic environment\, she found solace in surrealism\, where she could build imaginative\, mystical worlds far removed from the ordinary. Her work often blends whimsy with introspection\, using symbolism and dreamlike imagery to convey emotion and meaning. \nMicca’s ideas stem from her inner life: her thoughts\, emotions\, and reflections on personal experiences\, deeply rooted in her faith in God. She carries a profound curiosity for human behaviour and the unseen layers of experience\, often listening to psychology talks or interviews with people from all walks of life while she paints. Through this\, she seeks to understand how experiences shape individuals\, including herself\, and these explorations emerge in her art in unconventional ways.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1764983912121-79aa1f48-6619″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \n20 January\, 4-10pm \nBOOK TICKETS HERE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”PRICELIST” color=”success” size=”lg” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.miccamoo.com%2Fprice-list”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Is he dead? Maybe. Are his three evil advisors propping him up and carrying him around so that they may live the good life of creamed corn and gravy? It’s possible. The one thing that is certain is that the fate of the kingdom rests in the hands of the brave knight\, their squire\, their crazy friend Death and the enchanting princess. \nJoin Pummel Squad and a ragtag bunch of beloved Melbourne actors as they turn our beloved venue into the King’s banquet hall\, for a night of mayhem and revelry that’ll send the year packing with a laugh. \nPhoto by George Jefford \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f104cf-a51b”][vc_column_text css=””]\nCreators: Pummel Squad \nCast: Damon Baudin\, Bailey Ackling Beecham\, Keegan Bell\, Sam Buckley\, Sonya Chong\, Sophia Derkenne\, Maddi Formosa\, Sybilla George\, Eliza Grundy\, Blake Hohenhaus\, Molly Holohan\, Chris Kemp\, Harry McGee\, Ludomyr Kemp-Mykyta\, Stefan Kemp-Mykyta\, Sasha Lanyon\, Michael Leonard\, Indra Liyanaarachchi\, Cooper Donald McDonald\, Halyna Mykyta\, Dan O’Halloran\, Karl Richmond\, and Lauren Swain \nSet and Costume Design: Pummel Squad \nDesign Consultant: Savanna Wegman \nCostume Assistant: Lucy Mills \nLighting Designer: John Collopy \nSound Designer: Justin Gardam \nProducer & Dramaturg: Mark Pritchard \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1763000487564-81600435-2145″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. Swan Hill (Victoria)\, Wamba Wamba country. As the wildlife flees through the bush from an unseen threat\, three Wamba Wamba warriors – Wirramanda\, Warru and Dindi – must survive a cat-and-mouse chase across country to warn their people of the oncoming colonialists. Led by a volatile captain\, the colonialists have their own internal power struggles to contend with. \nAfter sold out seasons at the Castlemaine State Festival and Yirramboi Festival in 2021\, Soul Of Possum makes its return to fortyfivedownstairs. \nPlaywright Brodie Murray (Wamba Wamba) draws on stories handed down from his grandfather and father to tell a historical thriller that explores the contrasting relationships settlers and Blak peoples have with Country\, ecology\, leadership and spirituality. Directed by Beng Oh and Balla Neba (movement director)\, with a stellar cast including Wimiya Woodley (Panawathi Girl and Operation Boomerang\, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company). \nReviews \n“Other theatre makers could learn from this stripped back but powerful production …  The play is a huge achievement for Brodie Murray\, Declan Furber Gillick\, and their collaborators. Submissions were open to everyone – no matter their age\, experience\, or background – and every piece entered is included in the exhibition. \nArtworks by children\, first-time creators\, emerging talents\, and established professionals are displayed side by side. An endless variety of styles and media is represented\, including painting\, drawing\, sketches\, prints\, textiles\, and small sculptural works. All pieces adhere to a single rule: each must measure no more than 20 x 20 cm. \nEach work is priced at $150\, irrespective of the artist’s experience or medium. The artworks are presented anonymously to level the playing field\, encouraging buyers to choose based solely on personal connection and aesthetic appeal. The identities of the artists are revealed only after a work is sold\, making every purchase a surprise and a celebration of artistic equality. \nThis year\, for the first time\, we will be awarding prizes during the opening night on Wednesday\, November 26\, from 5 to 7pm. The award categories include: Under 18 Prize\, Painting Prize\, Drawing Prize\, Print-Making Prize\, Sculptural Prize\, Photography Prize\, Textile Prize and Mixed-Media Prize. Three seemingly disparate scenes that fit together\, Russian-doll style\, into a celebration of the lost art of spoken erotica. A play about the kind of sex we think about\, and not the kind we have – the places we go in our heads when our bodies are otherwise occupied. Structured like a concerto\, but performed as a play\, with live diegetic music. A cellist. A drummer. At times\, a band. Sex is awkward and funny\, dangerous\, dark and joyous. Sometimes all at once. \nWhat if you were just a character in someone else’s fantasy? \nFootfalls by Samuel Beckett \nA woman paces in half-light\, caught in the suspended breath between absence and presence:  What remains when care has nothing left to hold?  When love is tethered to obligation\, and time loops endlessly back on itself? Samuel Beckett’s Footfalls is a meditation on grief\, devotion\, and the frail borders between. Celebrated artist Maude Davey embodies the role of May\, a woman bound by duty\, lost in quiet anguish\, her every step compelling us to confront the spaces between words – where time stretches thin\, and the heart beats with the quiet ache of a love that lingers. \nPhoto by Mark Gambino[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ebbb-7aac”][vc_column_text css=””]Dark Erotica Quartet \nDirector: Blake Barnard \nCast: Cait Spiker\, Matthew Connell\, and Tim Wotherspoon \nCellist: James Hazelden \nLighting Designer: Kris Chainey \nSet/costume designer: Oliver Hall \n  \nFootfalls \nDirector: Keith Brockett \nCast: Maude Davey \nLighting Designer: Kris Chainey \nSet/costume designer: Oliver Hall[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ebbb-7aac”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. Initially I constructed my compositions from patterns or shapes I found in nature. Over time I developed processes for layering and removing paint and pigment\, which allowed the images to develop in a more unplanned way. I love the physical qualities of paint and pigment so it’s easy for me to be seduced by their beautiful or interesting effects. While I do rely on these things to get a picture going\, I try to get past that and become absorbed with evoking a layered world of light\, movement and space. \nMy great-uncle was an artist called Carlyle Jackson who did lovely impressionist watercolours in the 1920’s and 30’s. I grew up with his work around me. I’ve only quite recently become aware there was a very vibrant art scene in Melbourne at this time which included Clarice Beckett and the tonalist group but also a group of more traditional landscape painters. I’ve become quite captivated by it all\, my house is filling up with landscapes from the era I’ve been collecting and eventually I decided ‘I might have a go!’ So I’ve been doing little paintings of scenes I encounter in my everyday life – walking the dogs\, driving round the Dandenong Ranges where I live or taking holidays here and there. It’s been quite an invigorating change for me after the arduous process of making my big abstract canvasses. I still don’t know whether all my years of abstract work is of any assistance with the landscapes – it’s a bit like changing from soccer to badminton![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Born Melbourne 1971 \nCurrently lives and works in Melbourne \n  \nSolo Exhibitions \n2025 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2022 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2015 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2012 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2010 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2006 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2004 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2002 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2001 The Motor Works\, Melbourne \n2000 The Motor Works\, Melbourne \n1997 The Motor Works Melbourne[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1759371967823-8dc51d8b-b7c3″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 11 November\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Exhibition Catalogue” color=”success” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F10%2FRichard-Besley-Catalogue-2.pdf”][vc_column_text css=””]For sales inquiries\, please contact fortyfivedownstairs at gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or 03 9662 9966.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her love of watercolour comes from its freshness\, directness and immediacy; also from a stubborn determination to master this difficult medium. \nThe artist has spent the last 12 years living between Melbourne and rural Normandy\, which has influenced her work to a great extent. She has long been interested in questions of time and place and identity and how these issues are interwoven with the natural world and the cycle of life. \nShe prefers to examine the small rather than the big picture\, so that her works are concerned with the minutiae of the landscape – the little things that make up the whole. \nInformed by\, but not bound by the rules of botanical and scientific illustration\, she deconstructs her environment in order to better understand it. \nCarolyn has a long exhibition history and has won several awards. A first-wave Melbourne modernist\, Hester was the only major woman artist of the original Heide Circle—unapologetically bold and critically dismissed\, she worked primarily in ink\, not oils\, and left behind an extraordinary oeuvre. \nAt 27\, Emma Louise Pursey was told she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Just like Joy. Both experienced chronic illness and profound loss—Hester until her death at 40 in 1960\, Pursey to this day. Hester died. Pursey lived—and made a play. \nTwo decades in the making\, this deeply personal work blends arresting physicality with direct storytelling and multidisciplinary design to reclaim Hester’s legacy with passion\, compassion and life-affirming humour. \nFeaturing an extraordinary\, all-women creative team\, the production is endorsed by Heide MoMA\, CMAG\, Janine Burke\, and the late Mirka Mora and Barbara Blackman AO. \nThis project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants\, The Robert Salzer Foundation\, and through the Australian Cultural Fund Boost program. They represent my experience and interpretation of a variety of Muslim\, Hindu\, Buddhist\, Shinto and Christian ways of praying. The works also reflect aspects of the distinctive environments in which they were produced. \nAs a visual artist\, my primary language is abstraction. Though reference to the real world can be seen\, it is through the lens of abstraction that I seek to interpret some of the ways humans pray and\, secondarily\, express the different contexts of the experiences. I have made particular use of rhythm and mark-making as interpretive and expressive devices. \nMy time in Indonesia was particularly important.  Thanks to generous support from Monash University\, I was able to pursue a residency at the Bandung Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Art & Design. Muslim\, Hindu and Christian colleagues were exceptionally generous\, inviting me to take part in their personal prayer rituals. The artworks that came from these experiences seek to express something of the power and beauty of their ways of praying\, from their formalised prayers to the spontaneous. \nSimilarly\, wonderful time was spent in a Buddhist nunnery in Nepal\, and visiting Buddhist\, Taoist and Shinto temples in the mountains and forests of Taiwan\, China and Japan. My own very personal prayer practises are shared here in such works as ‘Lamentation’\, my quantified intercessory prayers for the massive loss of life in Palestine painted on a rubbing taken off a giant tree stump in Bunga\, NSW; and ‘Zoom Prayers’\, the process over the internet of daily prayers with my partner\, during prolonged physical separation. I have greatly enjoyed making and thinking about these works\, it is my hope that you enjoy them too.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Dr Ella Whateley is an Australian visual artist who undertakes practice-led-research through painting and drawing. Whateley has a keen interest in diverse religious traditions\, exploring the potential of art to engage with the spiritual primarily through the language of abstraction. Her work has become increasingly cross-cultural\, drawing on substantial periods in Indonesia\, Taiwan\, Nepal & China. She has had residencies at the National Taiwan University of the Arts and Bandung Institute of Technology\, Indonesia and has exhibited nationally and internationally\, in Taipei\, London\, Sydney\, Melbourne\, Canberra\, Bandung\, Jakarta and Wellington. \nWhateley maintains studios in Melbourne and Bermagui (far south coast NSW). She holds a PhD in Painting from the Australian National University\, where she was also Vice-Chancellor’s Visiting Artist Fellow in 2017. My signature cinematic drawing technique serves as a core methodology\, becoming a deliberate engagement with time itself—its relentless flow\, its subtle passing\, and the echoes it leaves behind on our consciousness. \nMy artistic output is broad\, encompassing the tactile intimacy of drawing and painting across multiple mediums\, the diverse narrative potential of photo-media explorations\, and the expansive ambition of spatial collaborative projects. Each facet of my work informs and enriches the others\, contributing to a holistic and deeply integrated investigation. \nThe collection of works you encounter here is more than an exhibition; it is a personal chronicle\, a reflection of my studio journey with time. With the sale of our home and a renovation project in Italy\, this very studio\, a crucible of intense focus and creative growth\, is now physically gone\, lending a resonance and a sense of conclusion to these pieces. First staged at The Kitchen in New York\, it has been hailed as a masterpiece of modern opera\, drawing influences from baroque to minimalism to indie rock. \nIsabelle Eberhardt’s journals were a rich source of inspiration for Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek. Eberhardt\, born in 1877\, led an extraordinary though short life. After the deaths of all her immediate family\, she travelled unfettered to North Africa on a journey of self-discovery. She rode through the desert dressed as a man\, outraged authorities\, married an Algerian\, converted to Sufism\, and died in a flood\, all by the age of 27. \nThe role of Eberhardt will be sung by the “commanding and captivating” mezzo-soprano Olivia Federow-Yemm supported by a cast of Melbourne’s most talented young singers and instrumentalists. \nPhoto by Jodie Hutchinson[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d10d-448a”][vc_column_text css=””]CREATIVES \nComposer: Missy Mazzoli \nLibrettists: Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek \nDirector: Beng Oh \nConductor: Patrick Burns \nSet and Costume Designer: Adrienne Chisholm \nLighting Designer: Shane Grant \n  \nCAST \nIsabella Eberhardt: Olivia Federow-Yemm \nChorus: Lisette Bolton\, Leah Phillips\, Olive Cullen\, Timothy Daly\, Daniel Felton[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1d10d-448a”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $30\nFull: $60\nConcession: $45\nGroup 6+: $45 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. The exhibition will showcase progressive textile art\, exploring the relationship of textiles to other art disciplines and the limitlessness of textile art. \nSocial Fabric will highlight and explore the ability of textiles to preserve memories of people\, places and times. The exhibition will look at the value of textiles in our lives and on the role of textiles in telling stories and presenting contemporary cultural and political issues. Flinders Lane was the centre of the fashion and textile trade in Melbourne for many years. Forty-Five Flinders Lane was part of this history as home to many textile businesses over the years. Social Fabric returns textiles to a place built to showcase them. \nSocial Fabric will highlight textile artists and the quality of their work raising awareness of contemporary textile arts. With textiles traditionally being held in low esteem and considered as ‘just women’s work’\, this exhibition will be an important opportunity to challenge its standing alongside other fine art. Social Fabric will showcase the variety of textile techniques\, wide range of materials and interpretations that challenge traditional ideas of textile art.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists” tab_id=”1759548842187-3b9d54a6-f035″][vc_column_text css=””]Naarm Textile Biennale – Social Fabric has been curated by Tamara Russell \nThe 97 Participating Artists are: \n\n\n\n\nAlex Hughes\nEllise Roberts\nMaryanne Moodie\n\n\nAli Griffin\nEnza Gandolfo\nMelanie Thoren\n\n\nAlison Cole\nErica Wells\nMelissa Laffy\n\n\nAlison Lewis\nFauve de Wilde\nMelody Chia\n\n\nAmanda Forsyth\nFiona Prendergast\nMichelle Trewin\n\n\nAmy Cohen\nGail Stiffe\nMillie Spagnolo\n\n\nAngela Rossitto\nGaye Naismith\nMiranda Brett\n\n\nAnnie Bolitho\nIaki Vallejo\nNicky Robinson\n\n\nArabella Strachan\nIsabel Deakin\nNicole Gammie\n\n\nAshley Mariani\nJane Burns\nNicole Kemp\n\n\nBarbara Roe Hebb\nJanita Ryan\nPat Porter\n\n\nBarbara Wheeler\nJayne Newgreen\nPeta Tranquille\n\n\nBonnie Lawrence\nJB Knibbs\nRebecca George\n\n\nBronny (Bell) Handfield\nJess Hall\nRobyn Elliott\n\n\nCarol Rowlands\nJessie Deane\nRobyn Stickland\n\n\nCarole Wilson\nJoy Barrett\nRonda Hazell\n\n\nCarolyn Cardinet\nJude Worters\nRosalind Byass\n\n\nCatriona Galbraith & Suzanne Swann\nJuliet D Collins\nRosalind Price\n\n\nChloe Kokoris\nKatherine Seaton\nSally Darlison\n\n\nChristina Turner\nKathy Landvogt\nSamantha Thompson\n\n\nChristine Lethlean\nKirsty Gorter\nSharon Greenaway\n\n\nChristine Tingay\nLeanne Poole\nSimone Kottmann\n\n\nClaire Humphrys-Hunt\nLindsay Hussey\nSonja Taylor\n\n\nClare Nelson\nLindy de Wijn\nSophia Slaney-Marsch\n\n\nClare Ryan\nLis de Vries\nSophie Shingles\n\n\nClaudia Bloxsome\nLouise Saxton\nSue Cunningham\n\n\nDeb K Williams\nLucy Hearn\nSze Tjin Yek\n\n\nDebra Billson\nLynn Berry and Margaret Knight\nTamara Russell\n\n\nDebra Howlett\nManasee Jog\nTim Craker\n\n\nDenise Honan\nMargarita Shoebridge\nZoe Jones\n\n\nDi Ellis\nMarie Bogoyevitch\nZoe Pavlou\n\n\nElizabeth van Herwaarden\nMark Ewenson\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”EXHIBITION CATALOGUE” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F10%2FCATALOGUE-compressed2.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

During her journey\, Gobey was granted the rare opportunity to paint en plein air in the historic gardens of the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcázar in Seville. It was here that the concept for her forthcoming exhibition\, The Garden of Life\, began to take shape. \nWhile Gobey has long been known for tackling challenging and emotionally charged themes in her work\, the turbulence of the current global climate prompted a shift. This new body of work offers viewers a moment of respite – an invitation to rest weary souls and reconnect with nature\, the subconscious\, and the unseen corners of the psyche. \nWorking primarily in oil\, Gobey has conjured an ‘other world’ populated by archetypal figures: cats\, horses\, and anthropomorphic beings set against dreamlike\, sometimes imagined\, sometimes real landscapes. Many of the works feature silver-leafed edges\, evoking the kind of quiet opulence found in Southern Europe’s ancient palaces and sanctuaries. \nA long-time student of psychology\, Gobey draws inspiration from the writings of Carl Jung\, particularly his reflections on nature’s restorative qualities: \n“Whenever we touch nature we get clean. People who have got dirty through too much civilization take a walk in the woods\, or a bath in the sea. Entering the unconscious\, entering yourself through dreams\, is touching nature from the inside and this is the same thing\, things are put right again.” \nThe Garden of Life is an exhibition shaped by this philosophy – a visual invitation to pause\, reflect\, and step beyond the conscious world into places both ancient and eternal. Opening night is Tuesday 30 September 5 – 7 pm and the exhibition closes on Saturday 11 October.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Janice Gobey is a Melbourne-based artist working across oil painting and installation. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts with a Master of Visual Art (First Class Honours)\, her practice explores themes of memory\, displacement\, and the emotional states that shape human experience\, informed by her studies and interest in Psychology and Sociology. \nGobey has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally\, with residencies in London\, New York\, Berlin\, Leipzig\, Provence\, and at Château Orquevaux in France. In 2023\, Gobey was granted the rare opportunity to paint en plein air in the historic gardens of the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcázar in Seville. \nHer work has been recognised through selection for exhibitions including  The Linden Innovators\, The F Word at Ararat Regional Gallery and Fixation at Town Hall Gallery. She has also been shortlisted for major awards such as the Kennedy Art Prize\, Wyndham Art Prize\, Toyota Sculpture Prize and the Sunshine Coast Art Prize. She is a two-time prizewinner\, including Best in Show at the Red Hill Art Show.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

These passages\, often overlooked\, hold memories of those who move through them. They are witnesses to change\, both personal and ecological. \nMy linocuts map these spaces in intricate detail\, treating each mark as a form of care. Whether drawn from an overshadowed urban laneway\, or a rural track softened by wind and time\, each image is part record\, part response. The process itself- slow\, deliberate carving- is meditative\, mirroring the gradual regeneration I often witness in nature and in people. \nHaving worked in disaster recovery\, I see art as an act of reassembly and restoration. These images acknowledge loss while also pointing to quiet forms of repair. The pathways depicted here are not just physical\, they’re emotional cartographies\, tracing displacement\, rebuilding\, belonging. \nBy focusing on what’s often unseen or under-appreciated\, I invite viewers to consider how we move through the world\, and what it means to truly notice the spaces that hold us. \nLink to 3RRR SmartArts interview with Richard Watts and Amanda Western: https://www.rrr.org.au/shared/broadcast-episode/35180/9258000/10351000 \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Awards\n2025\n– Finalist\, Sunshine Coast National Art Prize (QLD)\n– Highly Commended\, Milburn Art Prize (QLD)\n– Best Other Media\, Bendigo Easter Art Show (VIC)\n– Winner Queenscliff Art Prize Print Award (VIC)\n– Finalist\, Flanagan Art Prize (VIC)\n– Finalist St Colombus Art Prize (NSW)\n2024\n– People’s Choice Award Winner\, Sunshine Coast National Arts Prize (QLD)\n– First prize\, Printmakers Exhibition\, Geelong Arts Society (VIC)\n– Finalist\, Southern Ocean Art Prize (SA)\n– Finalist\, Hornsby Art Prize (NSW)\n– Finalist\, Stanthorpe Art Prize (QLD)\n– Finalist\, Artists for Conservation International Juried Exhibition (online)\n– First Prize\, All Other Mediums\, Bacchus Marsh Annual Art Show (VIC)\n– Honourable Mention\, Castlemaine Annual Art Show (VIC)\n– First Prize\, Lineworks Art Show\, Geelong Arts Society (VIC)\n– Best “Other” Class\, Warrnambool & District Easter Arts Festival (VIC)\n2023\n– Visual and Performing Arts Award\, Ballarat Arts Foundation (VIC) \nCollections & Commissions\n2024\n– Sunshine Coast Art Collection (QLD public gallery acquisition)\n– Ballarat Grammar Fine Art Collection (VIC)\n– Mural\, City of Ballarat Winter Festival (VIC)\n– Mural\, Haymes Paints\, Ballarat (VIC)\n– Road Nationals Coffee Cup artwork\, City of Ballarat (VIC)\n2023\n– Mural\, The Mallow Hotel\, Ballarat (VIC) \nSolo Exhibitions\n2025\n– “Ways Through” fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n– “Imprint: Marks We Leave Behind”\, KANK Exhibition Space\, Ballarat\n2024\n– “Laneways & Lattes\,” Accent Gallery\, Ballarat\n-“Fragile Fight\,” Ross Creek Gallery\, Ballarat\n2023\n– “I See You; Do You See Me?” Old Butcher Shop Gallery\, Ballarat \nGroup Exhibitions\n2025\n– Milburn Art Prize\, Brisbane Institute of Art\, QLD\n– Habitat Exhibition\, Belco Arts\, Canberra\, ACT\n– Gathering II\, Goldfields Printmakers Exhibition\, Ross Creek Gallery\, VIC\n– Lineworks Exhibition\, Shearers Arms Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Flanagan Art Prize\, Ballarat\, VIC\n– St Colombus Art Prize\, Sydney\, NSW\n– Latest & Greatest III\, Caloundra Regional Gallery (invitational)\, QLD\n– Linden Postcard Show 2024-25\, Linden Contemporary Art\, St Kilda VIC\n2024\n– Southern Ocean Art Prize 2024\, finalist exhibition (invitational)\, SA\n– Hornsby Art Prize (invitational)\, NSW\n– Sunshine Coast National Art Prize (invitational)\, QLD\n– Stanthorpe Art Prize (invitational)\, QLD\n– Artists for Conservation\, International Juried Exhibition (online-invitational)\n– Shearers Arms Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Liminal Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Castlemaine Market Building Gallery (invitational)\, VIC\n– Fairbanks Eye Gallery\, Ballarat (invitational)\, VIC\n– Brunswick St Art Gallery\, Fitzroy (invitational)\, VIC\n– The Space Gallery\, Geelong\, VIC\n– Mercure Convention Centre\, Ballarat\, VIC \nMemberships\nCommittee of Management Member\, Print Council of Australia\nPresident\, Ballarat Society of Artists\nMentor\, Ballarat Arts Foundation (2024 & 2025)\nNational Association of Visual Artists (NAVA)\nGoldfields Printmakers Group (VIC) \nEducation\nMentoring program 2023-25\, Ballarat Arts Foundation\nCert III Visual Arts\, Oxygen College\, Ballarat \nResidencies\n2025 All That We Are Art Residency (Tasmania\, two week residential)\n2023 David Frazer etching workshop (Greece\, ten days residential)[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1753931943627-0daf081d-1b11″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 16 September\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In her bold and immersive style\, Shakespeare’s tragedy is distilled to its raw essence by Gerstle\, with a powerful five-actor ensemble delivering an intense\, deeply human exploration of jealousy\, power\, and betrayal. A gripping\, unflinching take on one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. \nWhen the esteemed general Othello elopes with Desdemona\, defying societal expectations\, his most trusted officer\, Iago\, begins a ruthless campaign of manipulation and deceit. As Iago’s poisonous whispers sow doubt and suspicion\, Othello is drawn into a spiral of paranoia that threatens to destroy everything he holds dear. \nLove twists into obsession\, friendship into treachery\, and trust into a deadly weapon in this gripping psychological thriller. \nPhoto by Elena Ruefenacht[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b27e-885a”][vc_column_text css=””]CAST \nOthello: Christopher Kirby \nIago: Dushan Philips \nEmilia/Bianca: Lucy Ansell \nCassio/Lodovico: Matthew Furlani \nDesdemona: Tanya Schneider \n  \nCREATIVES \nDirector: Tanya Gerstle \nArtistic Director: Jennifer Sarah Dean \nProducer & Production Manager: Seamus Allan \nSet Designer: Callum Dale \nAssociate Set Designer: Josh McNeill \nCostume Designer: Samantha Hastings \nLighting Designer: Sidney Younger \nLighting Associate: Viv Hargreaves \nSound Designer & Composer: Jack Burmeister \nStage Manager: Jade Hibbert \nAssistant Stage Manager: Siena Bonnici \nVoice Consultant: Geraldine Cook \nMarketing Coordinator: Bridget Sweeney \nPhotographer: Nick Robertson \nGraphic Designer: Louis Green[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b27e-885a”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. It is a universe created by Khaanis Uldur\, a being of shadow and darkness. Muktoraah\, a realm of chaos and destruction is controlled and ruled by divine beings known as the Kha Muktu. There are ten different Kha Muktu within Mukturaah\, each with divine powers of their own\, being loosely based on the seven deadly sins. This exhibition features creatures\, worlds\, gods\, magical beings and powerful relics from the realm of chaos. \nMy broader art practice involves this universe\, as well as three others that exist beside each other\, combining in the centre. Together they are called Ultahnor where every creation I make resides somewhere within. \nMy practice is heavily inspired by fantasy\, science fiction\, video games\, movies/tv\, current events and childhood memories. I often use shiny materials such as metal leaf to imitate rare collectable cards that I used to collect when I was younger. The stories and world builder aspect of my practice have also been heavily influenced by childhood memories of video games\, having strange worlds and peculiar characters in most games I played. \nThe exhibition ‘Mukturaah’ was created in a response to current world events. Global conflicts\, widespread diseases and financial stress have all played a part in these artworks. Containing works on board\, paper and resin I invite the viewer into the realm of Muktoraah\, to experience this fictional land of chaos and destruction.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Braden Howard is a Melbourne based artist\, practicing in studio art. Directed by Green Room Award-winner Tyran Parke (who first brought this gem to life at Chapel Off Chapel)\, this production promises heart\, humour\, and a beautifully intimate theatrical experience. \nSet in the chaos of New York City\, ‘Ordinary Days’ weaves together the lives of four strangers searching for connection\, purpose\, and meaning in the everyday. With a luminous score and stories that resonate long after the final note\, this is a show for anyone who’s ever felt lost — and found something unexpected along the way. \nClovelly Fox brings signature warmth and emotional clarity to this celebrated work. Don’t miss the chance to see a powerhouse team reimagine a modern musical classic with grace\, charm\, and truth. \nOrdinary Days is presented by permission of ORiGiN™ Theatrical on behalf of R&H Theatricals\, A Concord Theatricals Company[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1613a-4d88″][vc_column_text css=””]CAST \nJason: Bobby Fox \nClaire: Sarah Morrison \nWarren: Joel Granger \nDeb: Melanie Bird \n  \nCREATIVES \nDirector: Tyran Parke \nMusical Director: Vicky Jacobs \nSet Designer: Richard Roberts \nLighting Designer: Gavan Swift \nCostume Designer: Louisa Fitzgerald \nSound Designer: Jack Scandrett \nStage Manager: Dioni Butt[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1613a-4d88″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $69\nConcession: $49\nGroup 6+: $49 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. My intention has been to capture the shared\, everyday experience of moving through the city – an essential and uncelebrated part of contemporary urban life. From walking down crowded streets to riding escalators\, waiting on train platforms\, or standing at tram stops\, we navigate these public spaces in the quiet company of strangers. \nMuch of the inspiration for this body of work has been my weekly train ride from Melbourne’s inner north where I live\, to the city where I teach a painting class. That journey has become more than just a routine – it’s a window into the rhythm and richness of the public realm. Each trip offers a glimpse into a diverse world where everyone is quietly moving through their own story. \nI’m especially drawn to those small\, unspoken moments of connection – a glance\, a shared pause\, the way strangers shuffle to make room on a crowded train\, or the momentary connection made through shared frustration or delight – a late train\, or an overheard joke. \nThese moments make the city feel deeply human – and endlessly captivating. \n  \nPre-sales will open on Friday\, August 15\, at 12pm. Working in oil on linen\, I create richly textured tonal pieces marked by sparse\, carefully arranged compositions in an effort to evoke a feeling of quiet simplicity and calm. \nMore recently I have shifted my focus to create a new body of work that is focused on documenting snippets of my time spent travelling into and out of the city. These paintings have both a compassionate and slightly melancholy atmosphere.  Through them\, I express my deep connection to the city that has shaped me — its light\, its texture\, its heart.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816688131-c7b41ae7-bea9″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 19 August\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”EXHIBITION CATALOGUE” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F08%2FGoing-Places_Catalogue_updated_26.8.2025.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

These values tend to be differently expressed by each artist\, though all three share gravitational pulls to bold colour and to the use of citational strategies. \nIn the case of Johnson and Burder\, representations of landscape/field/country are physically suffused by or overlaid with uncanny colour; in the case of Watson Knight and Burder\, hard-edge figurative elements disappear in favour of blurred outlines that suggest illusion and speed\, the ephemeral nature of perception. The careful distillation of such influences can be seen over the numerous visual iterations and exhibitions held by each artist since they first studied art together at RMIT in the early 1990s. Echoing cultural pasts remains a crucial part of each artist’s process\, but the works here ultimately speak directly to the present. \nMichele Burder’s paintings explore views from roads as seen through bus or car windows\, as well as those captured on walks through public parks and local reserves. They reflect on the transience of nature\, meditating on movement and stillness\, celebrating the temporal and constructed nature of these landscapes. Genres of landscape as well as the literal photographed ‘field’ are a starting point for Burder’s dynamic gestures in paint. These emphasise reverberations of movement\, Richteresque blurs. The paintings play with distortion\, subtle colour schemes and echoing forms. The resulting obscuring of the scene or field is a way for the painter to allude to memory and passage through urbanised space. \nIn Susan Watson Knight’s recent work\, traditional quilting shapes have provided the starting point for the development of high-coloured pigment prints (as echoes from the past). Familiar geometric shapes such as the polygon and the rhombus are scaled up and their edges blurred as Watson Knight conflates traditional oil painting and digital technologies. These images pay particular homage to anonymous Amish quilters from the early 1900s with their vibrant modernist approach to colour and design. Pigment prints variously evolve through ongoing experimentation with shape and colour and exaggerated blurring techniques. This renders pictorial outcomes kinetic\, as shapes across the picture plane appear to move and expand in interesting ways. \nAmanda Johnson works directly with echoes of colonial landscape genres and site-specific observation of degraded ‘wilderness’ areas. In the resulting temporal mashups\, the painter uses toxic colour to manipulate generic landscape atmosphere. While sunset views traditionally suggest time passing and lyrical escape\, Johnson’s DayGlo ‘fields’ elicit mourning and disquiet; invasive weeds insinuate foreground\, middleground and background and remnant stands of giant eucalypts frame depleted vistas. In the studio\, historical landscape sources recede as the artist maps changes to vegetation profiles and species diversity. The artist’s most recent depictions of botanical infestations and logging aftermath arise from field trips to the Otway State Forest\, Tarkine and Florentine Valley.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Biographies” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Michele Burder \nMichele Burder’s paintings explore views from roads as seen through bus or car windows\, as well as those captured on walks through public parks and local reserves. Genres of landscape as well as the literal photographed ‘field’ is a starting point for Burder’s dynamic gestures in paint. These emphasise reverberations of movement\, Richteresque blurs. The paintings play with distortion\, subtle colour schemes and echoing forms. The resulting obscuring of the scene or field is a way for the painter to allude to memory and passage through urbanised space. \nMichele Burder is a painter based in Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. She completed a Fine Arts Honours degree and Master of Arts (Painting) at RMIT. Since 1990 she has shown regularly in solo and group exhibitions. In 2005 she was an Artist in Residence at the Arthur Boyd Trust\, Bundanon. Her work has been shortlisted for the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize\, Bendigo Art Gallery. \n  \nSusan Watson Knight \nSusan Watson Knight’s geometric images fuse painting\, photography and digital printing technologies in an ongoing experimentation with the polygon\, rhombus and other traditional quilting shapes. Warm and cool\, complimentary and simultaneous contrasts of colour assist the artist’s continuing investigation of complex relationships between colour and shape. The edges of her forms and colour fields are softened and blurred to some extent and in the more exaggerated renderings these shapes pulsate and quiver. Many of the dazzling colour choices are inspired by the surrounding landscape and the birdlife and foliage outside her studio. The colour palette from the Birdsong Series directly echoes the brilliant plumage of the Crimson Rosellas and King Parrots\, whereas other compositions are more directly influenced by the artists interest in Amish quilts designed and completed in the early part of the 20th Century. \nSusan Watson Knight is a visual artist living and working on the outskirts of Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. After studying Arts and Education at La Trobe University she completed a Fine Arts Degree and Honours Year at RMIT. Her work was recently shortlisted and exhibited in the 2024 Biennale of Colour and Light and the 2025 Omnia Art Prize. \n  \nAmanda Johnson \nAmanda Johnson typically retraces locations where optimistic views of early colonial landscape painting were made. Paintings mimic nineteenth-century landscape silhouettes\, but heightened colour\, alongside the foregrounding of invasives and stunted epicormic growth invites reconsideration of the landscape view; are these paintings images of beauty\, erasure or threat? The resulting temporal\, cultural ‘mashups’ remind us that the colonial past is not remote\, but part of a colonial present in which ecological violence goes unchecked. \nAmanda lives and works on Gadabanud Country at Cape Otway and in Naarm/Melbourne. Her paintings were recently shortlisted in the Hadley’s Art Prize (2024\, 2023\, 2021\, 2019)\, the 2024 Len Fox Art Prize and the 2024 John Leslie Landscape Prize. Her recent solo show\, Stranglehold\, Colonial Heat was held at fortyfive downstairs in 2024\, continuing the artist’s long-term exploration of landscape\, country and toxicity. Since graduating from a Master’s degree at Victorian College of the Arts in 1995\, she has been the recipient of Asialink and Arthur Boyd Bundanon painting residencies.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816603277-13d69d57-c399″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 5 August\, 5-7pm \n  \nArtist Talk \nSaturday 16 August\, 2pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This insight has conjured a plethora of images for me\, some joyful and others more painful where I’ve been pushed to the brink of darkness. \nThese lessons have shaped who I am today and I am grateful for them as they have led me on a path of self discovery and awareness through the art of meditation. \nThis stillness has provided me with clarity\, and has brought me a new perspective that has allowed me to grow and evolve as a human being. \n“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly\, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” \nMAYA ANGELOU \n  \nAberrations by Michaela Sandberg \nIn an age ruled by screens\, where perfection can be attained through pixels\, Aberrations seeks beauty in error and the unexpected. \nThrough a process of digital exploration\, these photographs dissolve into artifacts of technological infancy. Here\, software is utilized not as a means to perfection\, but as a medium that speaks its own visual language. A language that risks extinction as technology hurdles toward idealised uniformity. \nAn aberration is a deviation. Within these deviations\, there is an invitation to welcome what was not planned for. Each image is a negotiation between control and surrender\, between the software’s pursuit of perfection and the artist’s embrace of imperfection. Aberrations critiques our desire to correct\, enhance\, and manipulate\, and serves as a reminder that\, in the midst of rapid technological evolution\, one thing remains constant: the beauty that exists beyond our intentions and plans.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’s Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Dawn Allmark \nDawn has been a practising artist for over 30 years and is also the driving force behind Madam Frou Frou\, a successful hair & beauty salon based in Carlton\, Melbourne. With boundless energy and an infectious enthusiasm for life\, Dawn constantly strives to push back any boundaries between her and her chosen field\, and endeavours to both unite innovation with creativity. By bringing joy and inspiration to everyone she meets\, Dawn hopes to touch the viewer with her abstract paintings in such a way as to elicit a deep and meaningful response. \n  \nMichaela Sandberg \nMichaela Sandberg is a multidisciplinary artist working from Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. Through the amalgamation of disparate elements\, her work seeks to merge the traditional with the neoteric\, the human with the ethereal\, and the intimate with the monumental. Practising fine art and photography in both analogue and digital forms\, hse employs an ever-expanding range of mediums to construct her work. She embraces the exclusive opportunity of each medium independently continuing to explore the limitless potential for harmony and synthesis between them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816500348-bf5fbf5c-26a5″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 22 July\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
