This series of six fortnightly workshops can be booked individually\, or as a complete set. All materials are supplied\, so all you need to do is turn up (in clothing you don’t mind getting paint on!)\, and be ready to explore. \n\n\n\nWorkshop 1: Composition\n7 June\, 10am – 1pm\nThis workshop focuses on composition in painting\, and how you can use it to create harmony\, tension\, balance\, mood and interest in your work. We’ll talk through some basic compositional ‘rules’ then we’ll take you through a series of practical exercises that encourage you to explore compositional ideas for yourself – working within or without the ‘rules’.\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Subject matter\n21 June\, 10am – 1pm\nWhat do you want to paint? What do you want your work to communicate? This workshop helps you to unpack these questions\, exploring connection to your work as an artist. It could be a starting point for you\, a deep dive into existing themes that have appeared in your work\, or perhaps a change in direction. Expect self-reflection\, group discussions\, inspiration\, and practical exercises to help you build a personalised visual diary of your practice.\n\n\nWorkshop 3: Colour choices\n5 July\, 10am – 1pm\nThis session explores colour\, providing ideas and tools to give you more confidence with using colour in your work. We’ll discuss colour as a standalone presence\, colour combinations\, the art of manipulating colour through pairings\, and the use of colour in historical and current contexts. We’ll do some simple colour selection and mixing exercises to launch your own colour wheel collection\, creating a solid colour reference for your practice\, and some fresh inspiration.\n\n\nWorkshop 4: Mark-making\n19 July\, 10am – 1pm\nMark-making\, brushwork\, texture… these all work together to create depth\, energy and movement in a painting. This session gives you the chance to expand your mark-making vocabulary as we consider how the marks we make record our own experience as well as impact the viewers experience of our work.\n\n\nWorkshop 5: Strengthening your voice\n2 August\, 10am – 1pm\nThis workshop is more of an open discussion around our work and how we can strengthen our voice and the direction of our practice. Participants are required to bring in some of their own work to talk about. The session will be mostly discussion based\, with one painting exercise included.\n\n\nWorkshop 6: Building your practice\n16 August\, 10am – 1pm\nThis session will involve open discussions about the challenges of surviving as a practicing artist. We’ll give you some practical advice\, helpful templates and real life answers to all of your questions. We’ll have a mini play session creating a pop up exhibition where you’ll be encouraged to talk about your impromptu work in a relaxed and supportive environment. Whether you want to dip your toe into the world of galleries\, connect with other painters\, or break through personal roadblocks\, this session will build confidence and independence in whatever steps you choose to take next as an artist.\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Charlotte Ivey \nCharlotte Ivey is a visual artist born in Aotearoa/New Zealand where she studied Philosophy of Art at University of Canterbury. She now resides in Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. \nLargely focussed on oil painting\, Charlotte’s work is led by the impulses of the body – exploring the illusory nature of psychological states\, and how they dictate our experience of external environments. She charts a territory somewhere between the traditionally ‘beautiful’ and ‘distasteful’. \nhttps://www.charlotteivey.com/  \n  \nLana Daubermann \nLana Daubermann is a landscape and still life painter living near Melbourne’s Merri Creek. She has painted since she was a child\, slowly sidestepping her way out of a career in advertising to becoming a full-time artist. \nLana primarily works in oils and enjoys the immersive qualities of paint and its endless possibilities in mark-making. Painting en plein air and direct from life is an important part of her practice as she explores the process of painting and drawing and the unique way it can connect us to the world. With a traditional background in tonalism\, her attention over the years has shifted more towards intuition and colour. \nShe exhibits and teaches regularly\, and loves to share her passion for painting with others. \nhttps://www.lanadaubermann.com/ \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Their art holds the textures of experience while remaining vividly present. Each work invites us into a moment where seeing and making meet. \nBarbara Murphy is exploring the aesthetic act of observation. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is processed over time\, revealing poetic layers of the deeply felt experience of objects in space. \nErica Wagner’s paintings and mixed media artworks\, inspired by visitations from a neighbour’s white rabbit\, reveal her lifelong passion for storytelling and curiosity about personal narratives. \nJill Anderson’s work reflects the colour\, and vitality of the places she experiences. Her latest art works emerge from time spent in a tiny\, vibrant town high in the Peruvian Andes. \nLibby Letcher continues her quest of sense making and art making as a way of thinking. Nature’s way of self organisation\, and themes of process and emergence\, guide her distinctive approach. \nUsing the human hand as a icon of generosity\, creativity and reciprocity Lyn Pool explores the notion that ‘All Flourishing is Mutual’. \nInformed by her work as historian and human rights advocate. Mary Sullivan employs layering\, erasure and fragmentation to trace threads of power woven into human stories. \nThrough the lens of archaeology\, Phillippa Croll works in abstract to reconstruct places\, people and objects in the same way artefacts are recovered and put back together to find their true narrative. \nRosemarie Reber explores figures and landscapes shaped by experience\, memory\, and imagination. She uses paint to create expressive layered imagery that invites viewers to reflect on their inner worlds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

And shake them. And kiss them celebrates two artists who have been friends and colleagues for several decades and presents a continuing dialogue between their respective studio practices. \nBoth artists independently explore intimate topographies of love\, memory and history. These explorations raise questions of how certain objects\, notions and connections might exist outside of human understanding and how the gaps between intention and execution and between execution and reception leave marks and traces over time. \nThe title of the show speaks of an aspiration to share artwork that moves others.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Trudy Clutterbok\nTrudy Clutterbok makes space for people who have complicated feelings about themselves and life. She does this by making works on paper as part of her studio practice and in the setting of her psychoanalytic practice. Since 1984 she has made and shown drawings\, paintings and super 8 films. Since 2020 she has also focused on printmaking. She recently won the Michael Beazer Works on Paper prize. \n  \nSal Cooper \nSal Cooper is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice spans independent filmmaking\, hand-drawn and stop-motion animation\, installation and performance events. Her work centres on the animation of objects and drawings to explore the latent vitality of the world around us and consider how things might exist beyond human perception or understanding. Her collaborative work has given rise to a body of commissioned material that includes major theatrical/performance works\, concert pieces and music videos as well as short films. While the integration of music within the context of moving image is a central part of her practice\, Sal’s artistic output also includes expanded drawing works and sculptural pieces which she exhibits in regular solo and group shows. She has been selected as a finalist in a number of significant art prizes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Each line\, gesture\, or trace carries emotion\, memory\, and intention. These marks invite you to interpret\, to connect\, to complete the story in your own way. I have a narrative for every piece in this exhibition; every viewer will bring their own narrative. Every experience has a different story to tell; every story makes a different mark. \nArt has never needed to reproduce the world exactly. From the handprints on cave walls to the paintings in Lascaux\, mark making has always been a record of human presence – a narrative stretching across thousands of years. These early marks remind us that storytelling begins long before language. \nThis exhibition continues that lineage: marks as memory\, marks as meaning\, marks as narrative.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]I studied printmaking at CIT 1981 – 1983\, then Art on Paper Conservation at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts\, London. 1984 – 1986. Not happy with that I went on to a Post Graduate Diploma of Art History and Film Studies\, University of Melbourne\, 2003 and a Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching\, MGSE. 2012. \nI suppose that my art really tries to counter my life. \nMy reality is chaotic\, rushing trying to organize a million things. Looking after my autistic children and the chaos that brings. The endless questioning of myself by myself and I feel everyone else. Always being judged and found wanting. Mess. \nMy work to me exudes a calm that life is lacking; I am not trying to make a strong political statement. I could on so many topics; disability\, patriarchy\, ableism\, ageism\, the environment\, the inequality in our education system\, the life expectancy gap between indigenous Australians and white Australians\, homophobia\, transphobia\, people who hates cats\, people who judge others based on petty rivalries. Even this is an incomplete list. \nI want to create works that in the first instance\, I enjoy making. To be immersed in the process. Flow. To stop and look and think\, yep\, that makes me satisfied; that I have tried\, not every piece is a success\, but they are all part of the process. \nCalmness. Soothing – not a valley of misery. I want to share the stars. A sense of belonging.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

I spent more than thirty years volunteering within the court system and became deeply involved with a range of organisations supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged communities\, serving as an ambassador and contributing wherever I felt I could make a difference. These experiences brought immense meaning and purpose to my life. \nIn more recent years\, life shifted dramatically when my partner suffered a severe brain aneurysm. The last decade brought a very different role – that of caregiver\, advocate and companion. It was a journey filled with challenge\, devotion and resilience. Like many carers\, I found that while looking after others so much of myself was quietly put aside. \nAbove all\, my first and greatest love has always been family. Michael and I have been fortunate to build a life surrounded by love – with our two married children and their partners\, and six lively\, beautiful grandchildren who bring endless energy\, joy and colour to my world. Family has always been my anchor and remains at the centre of who I am. \nEventually I realised that somewhere beneath the responsibilities and routines\, there was another part of me patiently waiting – my inner self asking for space\, quiet and renewal. \nArt became that place. \nI attended the Victorian College of the Arts for approximately three years\, studying painting in evening classes. I loved everything about it – the energy of the students\, the stimulation of learning\, and most of all the joy of painting itself. I was honoured to be accepted as a full-time student; however\, when COVID arrived\, that path unexpectedly paused. \nWhen life gradually returned to a more normal rhythm\, I continued my artistic journey through the Victorian Artists Society\, where I have been fortunate to learn from an inspiring teacher and further develop my practice. I also completed three courses with L’Escalier\, a French art school\, through Zoom studies\, which opened new perspectives and challenged me to keep growing and experimenting. \nPainting gives me a freedom that is difficult to explain. When I paint\, I enter another world entirely. I no longer feel confined by age\, responsibility or expectation. Instead I feel like a young woman again – in my imagination I am wearing high heels\, red of course\, and a flowing red dress. There is movement\, confidence and joy. In those moments I am completely happy. \nI primarily work in oils and have developed a deep love of portraiture because faces hold endless stories. I am fascinated by expression\, by what sits beneath the surface\, and by the humanity we carry in our eyes. More recently I have also discovered a growing love for still life – finding beauty and quiet significance in ordinary objects. \nI also enjoy working in watercolour\, particularly while travelling\, where its spontaneity and ease allow me to capture moments and impressions with freedom and simplicity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Working across painting\, embroidery and sequinned textile\, the project unfolds as a sustained inquiry rather than a series of discrete statements. Through repetition\, gesture and duration\, twinhood is approached not as duplication but as relation – shaped through closeness and exchange. \nAcross the exhibition\, attention accumulates slowly. Familiar images of sameness are revisited and subtly shifted; difference emerges within resemblance. Gesture\, memory and perspective become sites where individuality and reciprocity are held in sustained tension. Hand-sewn sequins recur as both material and metaphor – registering time and labour while resisting the speed and frictionless clarity of digital imagery. Reflection remains unstable\, images shifting with light\, movement and proximity. \nThe exhibition resists immediacy and spectacle. Meaning develops through closeness and return\, producing a quiet disorientation in which looking becomes exchange. Rather than proposing resolution\, the works hold complexity\, thought and contradiction open.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Anne Dash \nAnne has loved working with textile since a young age. When completing her Fine Art Degree at Monash University\, Anne further explored and developed her signature\, emergent and highly intricate practice. Inspired by eighteenth century anatomical plates. Anne combined sequins\, patchwork\, and paint into richly layered compositions. These works led Anne to winning the Mama Duke Painting Prize at the Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition. \nAnne’s current practice focuses on twins\, investigating identity\, duality and the complex relationship between self and reflection. Through sewing sequins and textiles\, Anne uses material as metaphor for mirroring\, response\, and connection. Utilising the slow and meticulous process of tambour beading\, Anne’s work creates a space for contemplation\, new ways of seeing and understanding the movement and change in relationship with self and others. \n  \nEmma Dash  \nEmma Dash is a Melbourne-based artist working across painting and textiles. Her recent practice reflects on the experience of twinhood\, emergence from and the complexities of shared identity. Working collaboratively with her twin sister\, Anne Dash\, she explores intimacy\, mirroring\, identity\, and differentiation through layered material processes and figurative imagery. Her work is informed by an ongoing interest in relational psychology\, perception\, and the way identity emerges through proximity\, the traces left by prolonged relation and continual exchange.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1784798129293-2bef1bc8-51e7″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night\nTuesday 25 August 2026\, 5pm – 7pm\nwith guest speaker Professor Patrick McGorry \n  \nArtist Talk\nSaturday 5 September 2026\, 1pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Being a child migrant clearly affects my connection to the land. It is a strange place\, with its own rhythms\, regularly and brutally interrupted by human incursions. I often piece together drawings from excursions and immersion. The studio paintings are rarely representations of a single specific location but are collected narratives. The portrait works have been driven by the notion of ageing and invisibility\, often cited by older members of the community.  Whereas the recent sculptural forms explore a different kind of personal landscape\, in the issues of conflict over geography\, the resulting diaspora and displacement. \n  \nArtist Bio \nIan Bracegirdle studied a Diploma of Fine Art at Caulfield institute of Technology and a Graduate Diploma in sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts. Ian has been responsible for many projects in Australia and internationally\, including an appointment as designer for the River Parade at Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Working as a designer over many years he has been responsible Exhibitions at the National Museum\, The National War memorial\, Museum Victoria and the South Australian Museum. As well has his significant contribution in the design field\, he regularly exhibits his studio work\, the most recent work has been shown at 45 downstairs and the Montalto Sculpture Prize.\nIan is also a singer song/writer releasing his album in 2025 “the weather is broken” with his band Blueboat theory[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ponch Hawkes” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Artist Statement \nARCOLATRY. AND SPACE \nBears and humans have been dancing in my dreaming\, awake and asleep for some time now. About two years ago I read an article about bears and hibernation and how the scientists engaged in space exploration\,  saw promise in unlocking the mystery of this animal that could sleep for six months\, not eat or defecate and still maintain its bone density and muscle mass. \nHumans can’t match it. We just don’t have it\, we can’t be bears. \n  \nArtist Bio \nPONCH HAWKES has a long established photographic practice. Her work explores the themes of the body\, the environment\, community and relationships through a feminist perspective often using her imagery to engage in contemporary critical debates. In 2026 her work was exhibited at The Australian National Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria. This is her first painting exhibition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”View or Framed works are measured from the external edge of the frame. The total external dimensions of framed artworks must be under 20 x 20 x 20cm. \nDoes my artwork need to be framed? \nNo. However\, all artworks must arrive ready to hang. \nWhat does “ready to hang” mean? \nYour artwork must arrive ready for installation. Examples of artworks that are considered “ready to hang” include: \n\nFramed works with suitable hanging fixtures\, such as wire\, D-rings or sawtooth fixtures.\nUnframed canvases (which will be hung from their stretcher bars).\nUnframed works on paper (which may be pinned). Please affix adhesive tabs if you do not want your work to be pinned.\n\nfortyfivedownstairs will not accept artworks that are not suitable for installation. This includes: \n\nWorks with unsuitable hanging methods\, such as string\, double-sided tape or no hanging mechanism.\nPaintings that are not fully dry at artwork drop off.\nFrames that are damaged\, unstable or unsuitable for exhibition.\nArtworks that may damage other artworks.\n\nWhere can I find frames under 20cm? \nGood places to look include: \n\nFraming stores\, which often stock ready-made frames\, canvases and boards.\nHomewares and home décor stores.\nOp shops and second-hand stores.\n\nIf you are based in Melbourne\, we recommend checking out Frames Readymade. Their Reclaimed + Range of Artist Packs\, which includes sizes from 4” x 4” to 5” x 7”\, are excellent as pre-framed boards for paintings\, while their ‘Seconds Stock’ in 4” x 6” and 5” x 7” are ideal for framing photos and drawings. \nCheck the external dimensions carefully before purchasing. The size listed on a frame usually refers to the size of artwork it holds\, not the overall size of the frame. A frame advertised as 20 x 20cm may therefore measure more than 20 x 20cm once the frame and backing are included. \nBecause all framed artworks must measure under 20 x 20 x 20cm externally\, we recommend choosing a frame with an advertised artwork size smaller than 20 x 20cm and checking its actual external measurements. \nPlease note: Some ready-made frames advertised as having a 20 x 20 cm external frame size actually exceed the SMALL size limit. Here are some common KMART frames where the exterior measurements exceed 20 cm (even though they are labelled as 20 cm): \n\n‘Nice Photo Frame – 6 in. x 6 in. (15 x 15 cm)’ (exterior measures 22.5 cm)\n‘Nice Photo Frame – 4 in. x 6 in. (10 x 15 cm)’ (exterior measures 22.5 cm)\n‘Manhattan Frame – 4 in. x 6 in.’ (exterior measures 22.5 cm)\n‘6 Piece Gallery Frame Set’ (exterior measures 21.5 cm)\n\nCan I enter a diptych\, triptych or multiple works as one artwork? \nYes\, provided all components together measure under 20 x 20 x 20cm when installed. \nThe work will be displayed as a single artwork\, with one title and sale price. The parts cannot be sold separately. \nCan I enter a 3D artwork? \nYes\, as long as the artwork measures less than 20 cm in all dimensions and can be hung on the wall\, it is acceptable. For example\, you could submit a ceramic plate and include hanging plate wires\, such as these ones available from Bunnings. \nDo you accept artworks requiring power? \nPowered artworks may be accepted if they can be connected to a standard power outlet and have been tagged and tested by a qualified electrician. \nArtists must provide batteries or other power sources for battery-operated works. The gallery cannot replace batteries during the exhibition. \nCan I use AI to create my artwork? \nNo. Artworks generated through AI\, even partially\, will not be accepted. \nSubmission \nHow do I enter? \nTo enter SMALL!\, scroll further down on this page\, complete the online Entry Form and pay the entry fee. \nWe will need your name\, address\, bank account details (to pay you for sold artworks)\, your ABN (if you have one)\, your artwork details (title\, medium\, size\, colour)\, and an image of your artwork (even if it isn’t finished). \nWhat is the entry fee? \nThe entry fee is $25. \nHow many artworks can I enter? \nEach artist may submit a maximum of two artworks. Each artwork must be entered separately\, with a separate Entry Form and $25 entry fee for each artwork. \nWhat is the deadline? \nThe deadline is Monday 9 November 2026\, 5pm. Late entries will not be accepted. \nDoes my artwork need to be completed by the entry deadline? \nNo. The entry deadline is for submitting the Entry Form only. Artworks must be completed and exhibition-ready by the Artwork Drop Off dates. \nWhy do I need to submit an image of my artwork? \nAll eligible artworks will be exhibited. Images are used to identify and administer artworks throughout SMALL!. By submitting an artwork image\, artists grant fortyfivedownstairs permission to use images of their artwork for SMALL! marketing and promotional purposes\, including online\, social media\, media releases and promotional materials. \nHow do I know my entry is confirmed? \nYou will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours of submitting your entry. If you do not receive a confirmation email\, please check your spam or junk folder. If you still have not received confirmation after 24 hours\, contact: gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com \nMy submission form is not working. What should I do? \nTry: \n\nRefreshing your browser.\nEnsuring images are under 2MB. You can take a screenshot of your image to reduce file size.\nUsing a different browser.\n\nIf the issue continues\, contact: gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or 03 9662 9966 \nI received a notification that SMALL! has reached maximum capacity when I tried to submit my entry. Can I still enter? \nSMALL! can accept a maximum of 1\,000 entries. Once this limit has been reached\, the online Entry Form will close and no further entries can be accepted. \nCan I edit my submission after submitting? \nPlease ensure all information is correct before submitting. If you need to amend information\, contact: gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com. No amendments can be made after Friday 20 November 2026\, 5pm. \nHow is my information used? \nInformation supplied through the Entry Form is used only by fortyfivedownstairs staff for SMALL!. Artist information will not be shared with third parties or used for other purposes. Artist addresses may be used for return postage arrangements\, and bank details may only be used in the event of an artwork sale. \nWhy do you have a limit of 1000 entries for SMALL! 2026? \nUnfortunately\, we cannot store or display more than 1000 artworks in our gallery. As SMALL! has grown every year since it began in 2018\, we have had to limit the number of entries to 1000 artworks. Please enter as early as possible to avoid missing out. If we receive more than 1000 entries before the final submission date of 9 November\, we will have to close submissions early. \nArtwork Care and Responsibility \nHow will my artwork be cared for during SMALL!? \nfortyfivedownstairs will take reasonable care of artworks while they are in its possession; however\, artists acknowledge that artworks are exhibited and stored at their own risk. \nfortyfivedownstairs accepts no responsibility for loss of\, or damage to\, artworks. \nfortyfivedownstairs’ reasonable care obligation does not extend to: \n\nNormal wear and tear.\nInherent faults\, weaknesses or deterioration in the artwork or materials.\nDamage caused by inadequate packaging or transportation.\nDamage caused by unsuitable hanging methods\, installation requirements or artwork preparation.\n\nArtists are responsible for ensuring artworks are appropriately packaged\, transported and prepared for exhibition. \nArtwork Drop Off \nWhen do I need to deliver my artwork? \nArtwork must be received by: Friday 20 November 2026. Works can be delivered during gallery opening hours anytime before this date. \nLate artworks cannot be accepted and entry fees will not be refunded. \nCan someone else drop off my artwork? \nYes. A friend or nominated proxy may deliver your artwork on your behalf. \nCan I send my artwork by post? \nYes. We accept artworks sent by post or courier. \nPlease send artworks to: \nfortyfivedownstairs gallery\nLower Ground\n45 Flinders Lane\nMelbourne VIC 3000\nAustralia \nPlease package your artwork securely using materials suitable for return postage. \nDo I need to label my artwork? \nYes. Each artwork must be securely labelled on the back with: \n\nArtist name.\nArtwork title.\nHanging orientation.\n\nUnlabelled or unidentifiable artworks may not be exhibited. \nDo I need to bring packaging? \nNo packaging will be stored for artworks dropped off in person. Artists should take their packaging with them after delivery and reuse it for artwork collection. fortyfivedownstairs will only store packaging for artworks sent by post or courier to the gallery. \nCollection and Return \nWhen can I collect my unsold artwork? \nArtwork collection dates: Friday 18 December\, 12:00 – 6:30pm and Saturday 19 December\, 12:00 – 3:30pm. \nWhat do I need to do when collecting my artwork? \nWhen collecting your artwork\, you must: \n\nCheck in with gallery staff so your artwork can be located and recorded.\nProvide identification before your artwork can be released.\n\nNo artwork will be released without verification of ownership or proof of identity. \nCan someone else collect my artwork? \nYes. You may nominate a proxy to collect your artwork. Please email the name of your nominated proxy to: gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com. Their identification will be checked before the artwork is released. \nI cannot collect my artwork on the collection days and I don’t have anyone to collect for me. What are my options? \nYou have the option to have your artwork returned by post during the submission process for a fee of $25. \nIf you are unable to collect your artwork and did not arrange for return postage when you submitted it\, please contact the gallery before the end of the exhibition (17 December). Please note that if you arrange for return postage after submitting\, the fee will be $40. \nReturn postage fees are non-refundable unless the artwork is sold. \nArtworks that are not collected\, and where no alternative arrangements have been made\, will be held for four weeks after collection dates. After this time\, artworks may be disposed of by the gallery. \nWhen will the posted artworks be returned? \nReturned artworks will be dispatched within 30 days of the exhibition closing. Please allow additional time for packing and postage. \n  \nExhibition Events \nWhat is the preview night? \nThe preview night is an exclusive ticketed event for collectors to view and purchase works before the exhibition opens. The artist’s name will be shared with the buyer after purchase. \nCan I share my artwork on social media? \nYou are welcome to promote your participation in SMALL! on social media. In distilling plants and landscapes to their essence\, she finds order in a disordered world. \nIn a broader sense\, the study of biocosmology reveals why natural forms centre and ground us. \nBiocosmology shows life’s ability to create and maintain order is not a contradiction of the universe’s chaos\, but a delicate interplay between opposing forces. This dance is crucial for comprehending the nature of life and our place in the cosmos. \nBotanic structures’ mathematical underpinnings reflect universal principles governing the cosmos. These forms show the universe is not just an arbitrary collection of matter\, but an organised and interdependent system. \nThe works in Cosmic Forms can be seen simply as meditations on order within disorder. Yet they also examine our interconnectedness with all living things – from plants\, to animals\, to each other.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Works may explore tensions between control and impulse\, nature and artifice\, reason and sensation\, or the conscious and unconscious. \nArtists may respond conceptually\, emotionally or physically to the theme of instinct as a driving force in human behaviour and creativity. \nThe exhibition will feature a wide range of voices and visions. Through painting\, drawing\, mixed media\, photography\, video\, digital media\, installation or interdisciplinary practices\, artists are invited to respond\, exploring what it means to act\, create and exist before logic\, before structure\, before explanation. \nThe Polish Art Foundation will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. A not-for-profit organisation\, it was founded in Melbourne in 1977 and has played a distinctive role in promoting artists of Polish heritage within Australia\, while also creating opportunities for artistic exchange between Polish\, Australian and broader multicultural communities. \nThe Foundation emerged from a practical act of support for artists who had recently arrived from Europe at that time\, giving rise to an organisation dedicated to cultural connection through contemporary visual art. Today\, almost five decades later\, the Foundation continues to present thematic exhibitions\, workshops\, social events and collaborative projects\, supporting both established and emerging artists. \nIts aims include promoting artists of Polish heritage to the Australian community\, collaborating with local Australian artists\, encouraging contemporary visual art in all its forms\, working with aligned cultural institutions and galleries\, and building a collection of works for future generations. For more information including our past exhibition catalogues visit www.polishartfoundation.org.au \nCurator: Ms Grazyna Kubic[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”‘Meet the Artists’ Event” tab_id=”1788329508889-e99d4e90-067c”][vc_column_text]Thursday 1 October\, 5:30-6:30pm \nJoin us for a special Meet the Artists event as part of the Polish Art Foundation’s Primary Instincts exhibition. \nMeet participating artists Olga Dziemidowicz and Kasia Dudkiewicz and discover the ideas\, inspirations and creative processes behind their work. Enjoy an informal conversation with the artists\, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions\, explore their artistic practice and hear the stories behind the works. \nAn engaging afternoon for art lovers\, collectors and anyone curious about the creative process. \n  \nOlga Dziemidowicz \nOlga Dziemidowicz is a Polish-born\, Melbourne-based visual artist working across landscape\, abstraction and portraiture. Using landscape as a starting point\, she works with colour\, texture and intuitive mark-making to explore what we notice in nature and the energy and aliveness beneath what we see. \nOriginally trained as an architect\, Olga spent seven years working in service design before turning to art full-time in 2021. She studied visual art at the Victorian College of the Arts and has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Australia. \n  \nKasia Dudkiewicz \nKasia Dudkiewicz is a Melbourne-based contemporary fibre artist whose sculptural practice explores tactility\, repetition\, memory and the emotional language of material. Working predominantly with cotton rope and thread\, she uses slow\, repetitive hand processes to create richly textured forms that sit between textile and sculpture. \nLargely self-taught\, her practice has evolved from traditional fibre techniques into a distinctive sculptural language\, grounded in the human hand\, imperfection and the traces of experience held within the things we make. Her work has gained growing recognition through exhibitions and art prizes across Australia\, including selection as a finalist in the 2026 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Supported by \n         [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As he fumbles through relationships and unusual friendships\, Xavier continues to orbit Sebastian\, sometimes closely\, sometimes from afar\, infuriating him and craving him in equal measure as they gradually figure out what they mean to each other. \nPresented by fortyfivedownstairs as part of the 2026 Fringe Festival\, Margot Morales (And She Would Stand Like This\, Antipodes Theatre) directs the Melbourne premiere of this funny and touching play by Eric Jiang (Lacuna\, Griffin Theatre) about the unexpected forms love takes. \nREVIEWS FOR THE SYDNEY PREMIERE \n“a delightful\, sassy saunter through the life of a friendship as it is redefined and liberated from the shackles of expectation” Theatre Thoughts \n“a pureness in thought and purpose that really shines\, for a work memorable for both its style and meaning… joyful” Suzy Wrong \n“diverse\, inclusive\, full of possibilities\, warmth and love” Sydney Arts Guide[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1f23b-2275″][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]Writer: Eric Jiang \nDirector: Margot Morales \nCast: Ken Paolo (Xavier)\, Lawrence Hawkins (Sebastian) and Chad Rosete (Felix and Lachie) \nSet & Costume Designer: Amy Todd \nLighting Designer: Spencer Herd \nSound Designer/Composer: James Gales \nStage Manager: Teri Steer \nProducer: Cameron Lukey for fortyfivedownstairs \nAssociate Producer: Kayla King \nImage: photo by George Jefford\, edit by Anna Piper Scott[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1f23b-2275″][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $30\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35\nUnder 30s: $35\nMob tickets (discount for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island mob): $30 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. Moonlight bathes a troubled Northern Ireland in a mournful melancholy. Night after night\, a young woman lies awake\, seeing phantoms in the shadows and hearing banshees wail on the gusts of night. \nDierdre is stuck – between friends\, lovers and nations; haunted by the ghosts of the lives she almost lived. When her old school friends gather in her kitchen on Christmas Eve\, their once charming differences devolve into divisive fractures\, revealing a dormant powder keg tempting the tiniest of sparks. \nSet against the backdrop of an occupied Ireland\, Grace Chapple’s scorching debut play is an unforgettable drama of home\, friendship\, the decision to leave or stay and the possibility of forgiveness. A new Australian work from a young playwright ruminating on her ancestral land\, Never Closer catches the tremors of a whole country and time\, resonating with striking clarity to this present moment. \n★★★★ “one of the finest ensemble performances I’ve seen for a while” Cameron Woodhead\, The Age \n★★★★ “packs a powerful punch” Thuy On\, Limelight \n★★★★ “Grace Chapple has a shining future ahead of her.” Jennifer Beasley\, Theatre Matters[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b840-8ba4″][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]Writer: Grace Chapple \nDirector: Marni Mount \nAssociate Director: Maeve Hook \nCast: Damon Baudin\, Rupert Bevan\, Enya Daly\, Ella Ferris\, Molly Holahan & Kaivu Suvarna \nSet & Costume Designers: Dann Barber & Ella Butler \nSound Designer: Rachel Lewindon \nLighting Designer: Sam Martin \nStage Manager: Liz Bird \nVoice & Dialect Coach: Anna McCrossin-Owen \nProducer: Ben Walter (Patalog Theatre) and Cameron Lukey (fortyfivedownstairs) \nAssociate Producer: Seamus Allan (Patalog) \nAssociate Sound Design: Julian Smith-Gard \nAssistant Stage Manager: Ivy Miller \nIntimacy Co-ordinator: Eliza Grundy \nFight Choreographer: Joshua Bell \nDesign Assistance: Maz Tynan[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b840-8ba4″][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49 ($55 Sunday)\nConcession: $39 ($45 Sunday)\nGroup 6+: $39 ($45 Sunday)\nMob tickets (discount for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island mob): $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. Franklin (sue.k.) returns to Melbourne with a new body of work. Further exploring her materialist positioning as an artist\, the development of the work for Slivers of Time adhered to strict rules of format and composition with the motif of a single sphere and an horizon line becoming simply devices for navigating space. Freed is the exploration and discovery of the material of the medium of Inktense Pencil. \nBy approaching the production of the work in a diaristic structure\, with an addition of writing down thoughts and feelings relevant to the day when a drawing was completed\, each work provides a slice of time framed and hung one-by-one in a row that mimics that of a filmstrip. Moments caught in time. \nFull of colour and texture\, the work pushes the boundaries between drawing and painting while concurrently capturing the passing of time. \nPlease note: the artist will be in attendance at the opening on Tuesday 20th Oct. and on Saturday 24th and 31st Oct. 12pm – 4pm.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1787131951383-51b96f1a-c01a”][vc_column_text css=””]Suzanne .k. Its an asymmetrical movement indicating uneasiness and discomfort\, with a sense of impermanence and loss of control. The concept of slipping sideways encompasses the absurd\, out of character\, not normal\, and free of directness. \nMore elderly women are becoming homeless who have never faced circumstances outside of their control before. This is a re-occurring theme in my work which involves memory and a sense of injustice since I started exhibiting in 1987. It allows for hybrid forms to go off at a tangent into something you don’t know what you are looking at.  It is crossing a line with what society chooses not to see\, and how it views women who don’t conform to its norms. The point is\, it could be anyone\, battling for visibility and wanting to be treated with humanity. \nThe essence is towards a unity of opposites even when the present is unpredictable and uncertain. This is about finding the extraordinary in something very ordinary\, where something seen sparks the imagination and gives total freedom to paint exactly as we please. \nThis exhibition also depicts paintings from the Pilbara\, where I saw Burrup  Peninsula rock art (petroglyphs) being sacrificed for mining. \nI see a commonality between our attitude to homelessness and our reluctance to control mining excesses. \nI want to give form and feeling to concerns such as what it is like to live rootless\, as a drifter without a home or connections\, and to live in a landscape that we mythologise yet exploit.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist CV” tab_id=”1787131951383-51b96f1a-c01a”][vc_column_text css=””]Dorothy Lipmann is a Melbourne based artist. \n  \nTraining \n1967-69 – Fine Arts (Painting) – Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology \n1970 – Fellowship Year – Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Melbourne University \n  \nExhibitions \n1987 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1989 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1992 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1994 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  group show \n1995 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1997 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1997 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  group show \n1999 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n2001 – Polly Courtin Gallery\, Swanston Street\, Melbourne – solo show \n2004 – 4 Cats Gallery\, Johnston St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2005 – 4 Cats Gallery\, Johnston St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2008 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – group show \n2008 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2011 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2012 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2013 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2014  – Summer Salon – Collingwood Gallery – group show \n2014 – Leave the Animals Alone – Collingwood Gallery – group show \n2014 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2016 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2017 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2020 – Tanami Desert – drawings \n2021 – fortyfivedownstairs\, Flinders Lane – group show online \n2022 – fortyfivedownstairs\, Flinders Lane – solo show \n2024 – fortyfivedownstairs\, Flinders Lane – solo show \n2026 – fortyfivedownstairs\, Flinders Lane – solo show \n  \nAcquired By \nMuseum of Modern Art\, Brisbane \nYarra City Council\, 2013[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

She has a BA Fine Arts (Printmaking) with a special interest in creating unique state prints. \nJennifer was born in north west NSW into an aviation family. Flying low over the Australian landscape in small aircraft gave her an aerial perspective of the world from a very young age.  Living close to the bush and swimming in the sea have always been close to her heart\, producing a profound fascination with the natural world and this ancient land we call home. \nGathering detritus from storm washed beaches\, kelp\, seaweed and sea sponges\, delicate plant life\, the patterns of roots and branches\, the mysterious sacred geometry of our world that knits everything together. Intricacies of plant forms\, in sea or on land\, ancient formations of weathered stone or mountain ranges all exert a powerful fascination that never grows old. \nJennifer spent nine years in Italy\, living in a rural area absorbed in local life\, history and culture while working and exhibiting. Home is now on the Mornington Peninsula\, Bunurong country\, where she swims in the Bay and delights in the beauty of this diverse geographical area. \nOver many years exhibiting in solo and selected group shows\, of opening her studio to the public on a regular basis\, Jennifer’s work has been collected by private\, public and corporate collections. \nFB       :           Jennifer Fletcher Artist\nIG        :           @jennifer.fletcher.artist\nPST    :           www.peninsulastudiotrailinc.org[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Lisa O’Keefe” tab_id=”1787214879275-0c2fec48-c572″][vc_column_text css=””]Lisa O’Keefe studied Art at the ECOLE NATIONALE SUPERIEURE des BEAUX-ARTS\, Paris\, graduating with Honours in Painting. \nIn the nearly 15 years she lived there\, her work gradually moved from abstract to figurative\, becoming more so on her return to Australia.  However\, abstraction did not disappear entirely.  The figures and other figurative elements exist within an abstract framework\, and within this\, she sets out to explore colour and texture (or the illusion of it). \nThe stories that unfold\, often diverse and detailed\, are juxtaposed against a smooth and empty background\, the intention being to create an area of calm\, a void.  These are paintings from the imagination but rooted in reality. – the world around us\, anecdotes\, personal experiences.   Questions are asked.  Do we have answers? \nAnd\, they express that endless need to record\, make marks and communicate in a visual way. \nLisa has exhibited consistently over the years\, picked up several awards and is represented in private and public collections in Australia and overseas. \nWebsite:        www.lisaokeefe.com.au\nInstagram:     Lisa.okeefe4\nGroups:          MSWPS (Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors)\nMelbourne Artists Society\nPAS (Peninsula Artists Society )[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Carolyn Roberts” tab_id=”1787214951249-0ebdeebf-2b4c”][vc_column_text css=””]Carolyn Roberts is a multi-media artist who works mainly in watercolour and mixed media on paper.  Her love of watercolour comes from its freshness\, directness and immediacy. \nShe has long been interested in questions of time\, place and identity\, interwoven with the natural world and the cycle of life.  Carolyn examines the big picture\, by the close observation of its components; her works examine the minutiae of the landscape\, the little things that make up the whole. \nCarolyn has spent the last 13 years living between Melbourne and rural Normandy\, which has influenced her work to a great extent.  This latest body of work is concerned with destruction and regeneration; in particular the bombing of the city of St Lo by the allies in 1944. \nThe built environment has been restored since the war\, just as the natural world continually restores itself.  However the scars still remain visible in the landscape. \nInformed by\, but not bound by the rules of botanical and scientific illustration\, the artist reconstructs her environment in order to better understand it. \nCarolyn has a long exhibition history and has won several awards.  She has works in both private and public collections. \nShe has a Master of Fine Arts from Monash University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Chris Rowe” tab_id=”1787214992702-88ceeca6-5cc4″][vc_column_text css=””]Chris is a full time award winning mixed media artist\, holds a BA Fine Art (Painting) and has been exhibiting nationally and internationally in solo\, selected and group shows since the late 1980s. \nCombining collage with a variety of compatible professional mediums has been her enduring challenge and continuing journey. \nOver the years Chris’ works\, informed by her life’s experiences\, have gradually become more complex and multilayered. \nHer people gather and wonder in environments of unknown composites. \nThey confer\, wait\, and search to understand themselves\, each other and their world. \nPerspectives are altered\, different in time and place while simultaneously\, an echo of life. \nWhat if anything is real or purely imagined? \nHer works are the imagery\, the viewer creates their story\, where the more one looks\, the more one sees. \nWebsite: www.chrisrowe.com.au\nBluethumb Online Gallery: https://bluet.hm/ChrisR\nInstagram: @chrisrowefineart[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Jill Symes” tab_id=”1787215058377-84b57aa8-e43a”][vc_column_text css=””]Jill Symes is a Melbourne based ceramic artist working with hand built terracotta and white earthenware since the 1970’s. This absurdist troupe\, which began appearing at fortyfivedownstairs in 2017\, presents rehearsed readings with a changing ensemble. Now the Highly Strung Players return to fortyfivedownstairs with its most ambitious program yet: a two-night season of four inter-related plays\, with Rose’s trademark ironies and satire. Along the way we meet or learn about many of his eccentric characters\, including the enigmatic and much-maligned Vanessa. The season culminates with Rose’s latest play\, The Volcano. Audiences can expect two nights of sophisticated humour and absurdist leaps. \n“The Highly Strung Players’ original absurdist works are playful\, witty and multi-layered. Renowned wordsmith Peter Rose has a fine sense of what lies beneath the surface of relationships and social interaction. His clever duologues highlight our foibles and delusions with sensitivity and humour.” Helen Morse \n“The more you see The Highly Strung Players perform\, the more you learn. The company’s repertoire comprises not separate plays but is part of an ever-expanding continuum. Peter Rose’s words are naturally poetic\, proving the power of poetry in motion and emotion. As with fine chamber music\, Peter’s words are designed to make you listen\, to pay attention\, to focus – to narrow down on all the quirks and frailties and intensities of the human condition. \nThese are true conversation pieces. At first\, the exchanges may seem like small talk – superficial\, brittle\, even bitchy – but they coalesce gradually\, inexorably\, to reveal a world of past experiences and associations that have occurred somewhere offstage\, remaining unforgotten and often unforgiven. There are epiphanies\, too\, an ominous undercurrent that is indicative of profound\, life-changing force. Surprises\, even shocks\, can erupt swiftly.” Michael Shmith[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Program” tab_id=”1787121213739-0564f716-1d67″][vc_column_text]The Marriage Game – Tuesday\, December 1\, 2026 \nPeter Rose and Ellie Nielsen present three short plays drawn from The Ones\, Rose’s celebrated series of satires about publishing and married life. We follow our two publishers over the course of twenty years: from the start of their relationship to the brittle present\, when Robert seeks to revisit the ‘pact of infertility’. \nThe program will run for ninety minutes\, including one interval.  \n  \nThe Volcano – Wednesday\, December 2\, 2026 \nRose’s new play (2026) presents four characters not encountered in previous works\, but they have deep social connections with those featured in The Ones and other plays. In the first act we meet Dallas and Edward\, tourists in Sicily who contemplate a momentous visit to a volcano. In Act 2\, five years later\, their twin children (Timmy and Melody) recall the events of that day and reminisce about a lost sibling\, Teddy. In the final act\, Timmy – trying to make sense of why he has been disinherited – is enlightened by an unexpected guest. \nThe Volcano (performed by Georgina Banks\, Ellie Nielsen and Peter Rose) will run for ninety minutes\, including one interval.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Biographies” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1c796-b36f”][vc_column_text]Georgina Banks – a writer\, facilitator\, and performer – was a professional actor in her twenties\, studying acting in New York and then working in theatre and television for over a decade. She first performed with the Highly Strung Players in 2025. \nEllie Nielsen holds a degree from VCA drama school and a Master of Creative Writing from RMIT University. As a Naarm (Melbourne)-based actor\, writer and dramaturg\, her work focuses on new and independent theatre. She is the author of the internationally published memoir Buying a Piece of Paris\, and has performed with the Highly Strung Players since 2023. \nPeter Rose is a poet\, novelist\, memoirist and critic.
