The artworks are based on photographic collaborations with local photographers and models\, as well as non-referenced drawings. The series examines the deep psychological connection with the pose and innermost private movements. The poses are influenced by medieval\, baroque\, and Renaissance paintings\, contrasted with a focus on contemporary models selected for their confidence and individuality. Mezzini’s paintings reveal the meaningful search for the perfection of our outer persona\, internal experience\, trust in one another\, and pleasure\, all in the hours of the cool\, calm darkness. \nThe compositional process allowed the artist to use light and colour to represent the abstract elements\, with the intention of moving the viewer into the pattern of the chosen pose. By incorporating input from subjects\, studio photography\, and drawings\, the artist unified the material and form of all the paintings into a coherent theme and statement. These works were all created using oil paint to achieve a visceral skin and light quality influenced by various sources. Approaching figure and expression style from an abstract perspective offers a new and unfamiliar visual treatment of the subject matter. \nIn the last few years\, Mezzini has rediscovered the process of making art. He strived to reinvent himself initially\, working within his previous area of experience\, which was abstract art. Believing that artistic evolution is paramount\, he shifted his studies from abstraction to figurative art and pursued a different motif with these pieces. Each year\, he completely changed every part of his approach in this series to strengthen his chosen theme.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]EXHIBITIONS \n1994                      Graduates Exhibition group exhibition \n2019                     45 Downstairs solo “E lascia dir le genti” \n2019                     Art Box Switzerland top 100 artworks “Ad Apicem” \n2019                     Art Box Miami \n2019                      Emerge Brunswick st Gallery – group exhibition \n2021                      45 Downstairs solo “mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um” Postponed to January 2022 \n2021                      Primo Red group Exhibition – C&H gallery \n2021                      Here again 45 Downstairs online group exhibition \n2021                      Aliorum portrait Exhibition – POME gallery \n2022                     45 Downstairs solo “Monumentum” \n2022                     RED Exhibition – POME gallery \n2023                     45 Downstairs solo “Primavera” \n2023                     Beinart Gallery group Exhibition “Toddler pillar” \n2024                     Brunswick st gallery 50×50 \n  \nMEDIA \nMay 2019 Sunday Age – Art Sunday promotion solo exhibition “ELascia dir le Genti” \nApril 2019 Art Almanac promotion “ELascia dir le Genti” \nJune 2019 News fox Switzerland Australian Artist Awarded “Ad Apicem” \nNovember 2019 Penthouse Magazine online – Print Feb 2020 “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2020 Recorder south Australia “artist roller coaster” \nJanuary 2022 Penthouse Magazine online “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2022 Last post Magazine “Artist John Mezzini” \nJune 2023 Beat magazine “Primavera” \n  \nFacebook: johnmezzinart \nInstagram: jmezz1974[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1739258637508-d8c5fddf-7c10″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night celebrations \nTuesday 18th of March\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This remarkable work resonates universally and speaks directly to our times\, inviting audiences into a world both familiar and painfully revealing\, a world that lingers long after the final bow. \nImage by Ben Andrews[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f142bf-acdf”][vc_column_text css=””]Cast: Ben Walter\, Karl Richmond\, Justin Hosking\, Damon Baudin\, Akeel Purmanund\nwith: Pepe Wright\, Avyakt Pawar\, Smith Barling \nDirector: Keegan Bragg \nProducer: Ben Andrews \nStage Manager: Ella Campbell \nLighting + Sound Operator: Zsuzsa Gaynor Mihaly \nSet Design: Ben Andrews \nCostume Design + Scenic Art: Louisa Fitzgerald \nLighting Design: Georgina Wolfe \nSound Design: Ethan Hunter \nDrag Wig + Makeup Artist:  Becky Silveira \nMarketing: Bridie Pamment \nVocal / Accent Coach: Matt Furlani \nIntimacy Coordinator: Tegan Crowley[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f142bf-acdf”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $3.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. It is inspired by the objects patterns and colour combinations around her. The common thread which weaves her paintings together is her use of flowers in her intimate still lives. \nFollowing on from her previous body of work “The Lamp Series” the works on display at this exhibition ‘Still’ explore the same theme. Lamps\, flowers\, vases\, mirrors and fabric are gathered and arranged and depicted in great detail. However this series makes a departure from her previous work in that these current still life works are painted in oil on raw ply. Most of Alexandra’s previous work was painted in gouache on cardboard or canvas\, in order to acheive a high level of detail. \nAs this major body of work progressed Alexandra’s bold use of line and colour in oil progressed in terms of its delicacy and attention to detail. What started as a series of quick\, robust still lives in oil became more involved. Attention to detail became more intrinsic. The works started taking longer to paint and Alexandra’s skill with oil paint and powers of observation developed. Colour on colour and pattern on pattern emerged. Schemes were explored where colours were used harmoniously and the palette was limited. \nAlexandra is predominately self taught as a painter. She completed a short oil painting course at Camberwell College in London in 1998 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics at RMIT. From there she graduated as a Secondary Visual Art Teacher from Melbourne University with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. She has also attained a certificate of Floristry and does flowers for weddings \nCurrently living in South Melbourne\, Alexandra lived in a small cottage in Daylesford for over ten years. Her quarter of an acre established cottage garden was a constant source of inspiration for her painting practice. Having flowers to pick and paint all year round was a joy. Alexandra began to plant the garden in particular schemes with a view to having vistas and colour arrangements to paint. One of her ‘en plein air’ garden paintings is included in this exhibition. \nAlexndra has had numerous exhibitions in Melbourne and has been represented at- and held exhibitions at- the Hive Gallery in Ocean Grove. \nAlexandra also paints interiors\, miniature landscapes\, cityscapes and occasionally portraits. She would like to do more ceramics and explore painting in the abstract.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1739258512218-3737ff8b-2b1f”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night celebrations  \nTuesday 4th of March\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Like many\, my preconceptions of America mainly came from film and television. But landscapes and monuments that are so vast and breathtaking can’t be compressed effectively into either of those mediums. Somehow the scale always gets lost. It seems the most appropriate reaction to these things in real life is to stand and stare (or pose for pictures in front of them). \nThe West has the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley\, the buttes and mesas recognisable from classic western movies and Roadrunner cartoons. Further north there’s a chance of running into a Wizard-of-Ozlike tornado which\, as it turns out\, can be house levelling. \nThe east coast also has its monuments\, the most iconic of which is probably the Statue of Liberty\, beautiful in spite of the patina of blue-green corrosion that is the inevitable fate of all copper\, especially when its final resting place leaves it exposed to salty harbour air. \nAs an outsider experiencing the difference of a land and culture which I mistakenly thought would be familiar\, I was surprised by how much and how quickly I developed a strong affection for this overwhelming\, complex and strangely beautiful place. This body of work is an attempt to represent some of the things mentioned above as they look and how they felt.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]James Bryans has been exhibiting since the mid-nineties\, presenting work in national and international institutions such as Stills Gallery\, NSW\, the National Portrait Gallery\, UK\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Linden Gallery\, and Green Floor Gallery\, VIC\, and the Melbourne Immigration Museum. For every weekend over 10 years I made a garden in Flinders\, a personal project informed by my experience as a garden designer. For me\, Musk Cottage Garden embodied a deep sense of connection to place\, and through a process of remembering\, has become both collaborator and muse for this body of work. Produced through a methodology of gardening\, I am guided by visual elements and principles of line\, form\, texture and scale\, to make visible that which has been lost or overlooked within the organic world. I’m interested in revealing the whole life of plants and gardens and drawing attention to the flux between renewal and decay. I have experimented with paint\, glazes\, colour and layering of digital imagery\, to suggest windows into other worlds that bring forward an interplay between depth and detail. These hybrid spaces are suggested through varying weights and types of paint\, and applied through methods of throwing\, cutting in\, scumbling\, spraying\, scraping and drawing. The physicality of painting connects me to the memory and act of garden-making\, and to the potential of regeneration. Through mark-making\, I am defining space\, cultivating\, and trans-planting open-ended and expansive landscapes\, with porous canopies\, vistas and caves\, which connect me to the memory of Musk Cottage Garden. \n  \nAll proceeds from artwork sales will be donated to Global Gardens of Peace.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Rick has been an influential and innovative creative force in Australia for over four decades. Founder of Eckersley Garden Architecture\, Rick is recognised as one of Australia’s foremost garden designers. Rick challenged the traditional ideals of the Australian garden and has inspired a generation of landscape designers and gardeners. Rick continues to be influenced by the natural world\, garden-making\, and the memory of place through a neurodiverse lens. In 2020 Rick authored his book Rogue: Art of a Garden\, centred around his love for Musk Cottage and featuring several established Melbourne artists. This is not a stuffy matinée. This is where classical music meets club and cabaret. \nCreating connections across community\, each composer has selected a piece of writing from the Queerstories archive that spoke to their own identity\, creativity or experience. \nWith compositions by Sia Ahmad\, Lucy Blomfield\, Gabi Cadenhead\, Connor D’Netto\, Olivia Diamant\, Leila Harris\, Lillian Hearne\, Cameron Lam\, Caerwen Martin\, James Rushford\, Alex Turley and Sally Whitwell. \nDrawing inspiration from stories by Liz Duck-Chong\, Teddy Dunn\, HANDSOME\, Dmetri Kakmi\, Paul Kidd\, Joe Levitt\, Fiona Kelly McGregor\, Tommy Misa\, Bastian Fox Phelan\, Fletcher Quilty and Omar Sakr. \nThis project marks the second iteration of Divisi’s Compose queer programming – developing work by emerging queer composers to tell our stories in new ways. Although there is a thriving amateur queer music scene of community organisations and hobby musicians\, there is limited opportunity for composers to express their queerness at a professional level. These programs give voice to tell stories at a professional quality of musical expression. \nDivisi Chamber Singers is a youth-led\, not-for-profit organisation that supports early-career creative artists. We strive to break down established norms of classical music through commissioning and performing innovative creative works and projects. \nQueerstories is a national LGBTQI+ storytelling project directed by Maeve Marsden for the last ten years\, with an award-winning podcast and events all around Australia\, from Sydney to Melbourne\, Hobart to Shepparton\, Newcastle to Brisbane\, to Albury\, Adelaide\, Mullumbimby\, Mudgee and beyond. \n“Precise blending of parts\, even at the most demandingly close intervals\, plus the bright purity of steady upper voices and the resonance of the lower voices impressed throughout.” – Heather Leviston\, Classic Melbourne \n“A warm and inviting anthology\, Queerstories welcomes you in with open arms and draws you into a rich conversation with some fresh and entertaining LGBTQI+ writers. Let’s hope there are more volumes to come.” – The AU Review[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b255-fc71″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $49\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. A collection of 50 postcard-size streetscapes reflect many of the places loved by visitors and locals around Melbourne and Victoria. What makes them special are the different perspectives\, light and angles that Chris chooses. \nChris is a modern impressionist and his art practices has been powerfully influenced by the Heidelberg school and the 9X5 exhibition of 1889. Chris pays tribute to them in this exhibition whilst bringing his own light\, colour and form to these images. A must-see collection by a talented and respected artist today. \n  \nchrispelchen.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]\n\n\n\n\nWith his talent for painting with a brush\, Chris became an award winning traditional Signwriter in the 1980’s\, establishing his own business\, Professional Signs\, which has been operating successfully for over 35 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris reignited his love for creative painting in 2007 when he completed a number of courses at the CAE Melbourne College in Life Drawing and Portraiture. It is apparent from his portrait work that Chris has a unique ability to capture the “essence” of his subject. Chris has since completed several commissioned portraits for various clients. \nContemporary influence of artists such as Brett Whiteley\, John Brack and Richard Larter have had a significant impact on Chris’ work. This influence\, together with the experience Chris has gained in the signage industry over the years\, has led Chris to experiment with different colours\, materials\, mediums and textures. \nChris lived in the Czech Republic and studied at Prague College doing technical drawing and life drawing at various studios\, to enhance the quality and composition of portraits and drawing skills. Travelling to New York\, London and Europe\, he visited many galleries to study techniques and draw inspiration from the finest artists in the world. \nChris draws mainly from original photography for his subjects\, “There is something magical about using a paint brush and depicting an image on a canvas\, whatever the medium”. \n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

After graduation\, she gained experience and knowledge in various fields through group exhibitions. She lives in Melbourne and studies Master Fine Art at RMIT University. Julia’s work explores traditional understandings of craft through mediums such as sculptural installation\, sound performance\, and short video. Through her experimental practice\, she explores the relationship between herself and objects\, creating novelty by mixing traditional methods and contemporary art. The work seeks to express the beauty of Oriental thought and the sorrow of immigrants. Her work unravels the confusion and complexity of self-identity and relationships in narrative form. Julia is currently suffering from memories of the past and no longer wants to work with clay\, shifting instead towards a metaphorical immersive space in which one’s body and mind are twisted and cut with cloth to reflect painful extremes of her experience and the sadness of afterimage. \nSewing is an exploration of forgetting pain and neglecting me in the repetitive movements of the unconscious. But sometimes when I feel pain from being stabbed by a needle sharpness\, how much more painful was it than this pain? I feel pain like stabbing my chest even more as I remember it. Deep inside my body\, there are only sadness and regret left in this world. There will be no pain in the world other than this\, but it’s a contradiction that I regret deeply only after I leave because I didn’t know how to leave. What choice would I have if I knew the future? What does it mean to live here alone? My work is a collection of repentance\, longing\, and immersed sad emotions. What would be the wrong choice in my life’s decision?\nIt’s empty\, but we have to endure it \n몰입하기~\n재봉하는 행위는 무의식의 반복적인 움직임 속에서 고통을 잊고 나를 방치하는 탐구입니다. 제 인생의 결정의 무엇이 잘못된 선택일까요?\n공허하지만 견뎌내야 합니다[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]H Y U N – J O O K I M ( Julia ) \nBorn in South Korea\nLives in Melbourne \nEDUCATION\n2000 Bachelor of Fine Art (Ceramics)\, Hong-Ik University South Korea\, Seoul\n2021 Master Fine Art (Sculpture /ceramics)\, RMIT University\, Melbourne\nKorea\nOccupation\n2001 Curator at To-Art Space in Apgujon\, Seoul \nSELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS\n2003 Insa-Art Gallery (Kcdf)\, Seoul\n2005 In a View Gallery (Apgujon)\, Seoul\nAustralia \nSOLO EXHIBITIONS\n2016 ‘The Meeting of Paint and Ceramics’\, Canopy Art Centre\, Queensland\n2022 ‘HYUN_JOO KIM’ graduation exhibition\, BLACKCAT GALLERY\, Melbourne \nSELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS\n2017 ‘Artists of North’\, Tank4 Gallery\, Queensland\n2017 ‘Celebrating 25 years’\, Kick Contemporary Art\, Queensland\n2019 ‘Creative market’\, First Site Gallery\, RMIT Melbourne\n2020 ‘Fifty Squared Art prize’\, Brunswick street gallery\, Melbourne\n2020 ‘The Meaning of Things’\, Craft Victoria\, Melbourne\n2021 ‘Rock\, Paper\, Scissors’\, Red gallery\, Melbourne\n2021 RMIT MFA Graduation exhibition\, Site Eight Gallery. By using the methodologies of physical expression\, spontaneity\, gesture\, embodiment\, flow states and intuitive mark making\, his art captures the ever-changing states of being that are common to us all and also regarding experiencing a mental health issue. These states are expressed through free drawing\, and abstract painting and sculpture. While it is challenging to experience a mental health issue\, the relationship between his mental health issue and creative practices is considered to be a positive one\, forming as a necessary catharsis. \nHis artworks seek to represent elements on the continuum of human subjectivity to create a commonality between himself as an artist\, and the viewer\, forming into shared emotional experiences. He expresses what he is feeling via the artwork\, and this in turn resonates beyond the act of making as the artwork becomes a discursive object. Each of his pieces reflect specific states of being\, conveying basic human emotions. \nA flow state of mind is critical to achieving this. Ned has to focus intently on the task at hand to the point where he forgets himself and becomes lost in the making. His mind is occupied in the creative act where he is entirely present to himself and not the external world. This enables him to enter into a state of creativity where he is connected to himself without external or internal voices\, where he is in a state of wholeness and affirmation. \nSo\, he seeks to function with as little language as possible. This includes internal dialogues. This allows his state of being to be represented without distraction. Where the nonverbal creates a safe and productive space for him.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Ned Brook is an artist early in his career\, having his first group show at SOL Gallery in Melbourne recently. With research as photographer\, and subject\, and in collaboration with my queer and ‘othered’ community they actively queer and playfully weaponise: creative space for oppositional action; communal play; individual agency; self-expression; gender performativity; and the erotic. In deconstructing\, rearranging\, recontextualising and appropriating binary archetypes and narratives\, this collection enables the empowerment of individuals and communities alike\, and in doing so\, inspires those who have felt shame\, to make a stand\, for themselves\, and those they love.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Brent Leideritz is an independent Adelaide-based photographer who’s photographic practice originated with film during their self-taught and experimental formative period in the mid to late 90s and early 00s. Their practice has developed into digital mediums\, utilising digital post-production and more recently exploring ai-generated promptographic resolutions. They continue to expand on themes and subject matter seeded in their formative years. Brent continues to interrogate identity\, producing works that seek to question how an identity is formed and how identity is oppressed or liberated through family\, cultural structures\, kin and communities. \nBrent Leideritz’s portrait photography is centred in creatively capturing the moment of collaboration between photographer and individual. In most instances\, these moments coalesce into larger photographic series that explore themes such as: identity formation and politics; the human condition and connectivity; resistance of oppressive structures; cultural agitation for positive discourse and challenging religious and societal norms. Their practice interrogates and challenges normative ways of being\, providing a space to those that are ‘other’ to be seen and heard. Developing their practice from within ‘othered’ communities as a neurovariant\, queer\, goth\, freak\, Brent gives space for playful opposition\, collaboration\, gender queering and representation. This creates space for communal deconstruction and reconstruction of the symbolism\, myth and narratives that exist within normative and conservative society. Brent’s work creates an ever-unfolding set of questions for viewers to explore\, and in doing so\, asks those who see the resultant photographic artworks to consider a viewpoint that may differ from their own\, as a way to move beyond dated binaries of the past. \nArtist’s website: b. | brent leideritz [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1734410378355-3887b156-f2b4″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night \nTuesday 21 January\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Exhibition Exegesis” color=”danger” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F12%2FBrent_Leideritz_Divergent_archetypes_for_old_ideas_exegesis_REPOSITORY.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As always\, the comedy is sharp\, mordant and absurdist. The Players will be joined by Julian McCarthy on percussion. \nThe Siegfried Idyll – a duologue to be performed by Peter Rose and Claudio Bozzi – presents a long-time\, seemingly contented gay couple contemplating the seismic repercussions of ‘a night at the opera’. \nLush Lyfe – a trilogue to be performed by Rose\, Bozzi and Ellie Nielsen – takes three somewhat reluctant siblings to a nursing home called Lush Lyfe\, where they wait endlessly for a glimpse of their parents. \n“The Highly Strung Players’ original absurdist works are playful\, witty and multi-layered. Founding member and renowned wordsmith Peter Rose has a fine sense of what lies beneath the surface of relationships and social interaction. His clever duologues highlight our foibles and delusions with sensitivity and humour.” Helen Morse[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f18753-1063″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $35\nConcession: $25\nGroup 6+: $25 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SMALL! is a truly democratic exhibition\, accessible for all artists regardless of experience or status.  \nSMALL! is an opportunity to see the walls of fortyfivedownstairs covered with an endless variety of styles and media including painting\, drawing\, photography\, sketches\, prints\, textiles\, and small sculptural works. As well\, submissions of linocuts\, relief prints\, sculpture using recycled materials and embroidery show that size is no barrier to experimentation. \nAll the submitted artworks fit our two simple criteria – they’re no larger than 20 x 20cm and can hang on the wall. \nAll the artworks will be priced at $150 no matter the artist or the medium\, making SMALL! a chance for audiences to access affordable art. And we want visitors to choose their favourites based solely on what they love\, so artist names won’t be listed alongside the pieces. \nWe can’t wait to show you what can be done in a small space! Wintringham delivers a wide range of services to aged people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. \nDorothy Lipmann’s art focuses on elderly women who make up half of Wintringham’s clients. Most of these women have been through some kind of trauma in their life. For many their stability is very fragile\, leading to isolation\, uncertainty\, division and stigma. But with support they no longer feel so powerless and refuse to become victims. The artist wants to make poverty visible and for people to consider what it must be like to be an elderly woman and homeless.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Dorothy Lipmann is a Melbourne based artist \n  \nTraining \n1967-69 – Fine Arts (Painting) – Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology \n1970 – Fellowship Year – Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Melbourne University \n  \nExhibitions \n1987 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1989 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1992 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1994 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  group show \n1995 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1997 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n1997 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  group show \n1999 – Pinacotheca Gallery\, Waltham Place\, Richmond –  solo show \n2001 – Polly Courtin Gallery\, Swanston Street\, Melbourne – solo show \n2004 – 4 Cats Gallery\, Johnston St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2005 – 4 Cats Gallery\, Johnston St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2008 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – group show \n2008 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2011 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2012 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2013 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2014  – Summer Salon – Collingwood Gallery – group show \n2014 – Leave the Animals Alone – Collingwood Gallery – group show \n2014 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2016 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2017 – Collingwood Gallery\, Smith St\, Collingwood – solo show \n2020 – Tanami Desert – drawings \n2021 – 45 Downstairs\, Flinders Lane – group show on line \n2022 – 45 Downstairs\, Flinders Lane – solo show \n2024 – 45 Downstairs\, Flinders Lane – solo show \n  \nAcquired By \nMuseum of Modern Art\, Brisbane \nYarra City Council\, 2013 \n  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1708388130131-1a25d11d-1099″][vc_column_text css=””]More details coming soon…[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Chloe makes intimate drawings on plywood and paper of people\, moments\, animals\, trees and waterways. Each drawing is made as a response to a long loving look\, listening to life sing. Working with colour pencils\, Chloe is drawn to a space between the branches\, upon the stones\, the hum of footsteps\, the feeling of being here\, witness to all this beauty\, this everyday magic. Chloe’s drawings offer a place to dream\, to wander\, to reflect\, to see and to see again\, to change perspective. ‘We are all listening to the river\,’ words handwritten in Chloe’s studio\, spoken by a friend that inspires her heart. Drawing\, for Chloe\, is a practice of being moved by the wild possibilities of friendship\, walking and poet tree. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]\nChloe Vallance studied drawing at RMIT University\, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts\, Honours in 2009\, and a Masters of Art (Fine Art) by Research in 2014. This exhibition embodies a celebration of liberated chaos\, where conventions are dismantled and expectations are cast aside. \n  \nJustine McAllister has created the world she wishes to see around her: one of acceptance\, nourishment\, and creativity\, free from shame and pretence. The figures in her works are depicted amidst fragmented surroundings\, calmly unapologetic about their existence and accepting of those around them. They remain serene amidst the engulfing noise. \n  \nThis exhibition features paintings\, works on paper\, and beaded textile artworks. These pieces celebrate the human touch and the physical process of creation. In an era where technology and AI are homogenising creativity and diminishing human physicality\, McAllister’s art offers a warm sense of intimacy and connection. \n  \nBy challenging both external and internal pressures\, McAllister has embraced a new\, unbridled aesthetic that defies perfection\, encouraging a departure from imposed norms and self-restriction. Her work rebels against the modern pursuit of fame and flawlessness\, serving as a reminder of the beautiful chaos inherent in authentic human relationships. \n  \nImage credits: ‘Romantic Rebellion’ installation view\, 2024\, photographer: Shannyn Higgins[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]\nJustine McAllister is a notable contemporary painter from Ballarat\, Australia\, now based in Melbourne. Born in 1987\, she has garnered acclaim for her large-scale murals that blend figuration with abstraction. Her work is celebrated for its vibrant\, dynamic quality and distinctive colour palette that has become integral to her style. \n  \nEmploying brush and roller to create her murals\, McAllister delves into themes of human connection\, abundance\, and acceptance. She sees her art as a personal visual language\, a way to interpret the complex chaos of modern life. \n  \nA passionate advocate for public art\, McAllister believes it serves as a powerful alternative to commercial advertising\, offering perspectives from individuals rather than corporations. She views murals as contemporary time stamps\, reflecting the experiences and values of their creators. For McAllister\, the creation of art in public spaces holds great significance\, as she believes public art invites contemplation and should be readily accessible to everyone. \n‘Romantic Rebellion’ is McAllister’s second solo show\, where she integrates her mural practice with the contemporary gallery space. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707887446229-aca4af4e-555c”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night \nFriday 8 November\, 5-7pm \n  \nArtist Talk \nSaturday 16 November\, 1pm. \nHosted by fellow artist Jack Rowland and followed by a casual Q&A.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”ONLINE CATALOGUE” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2024%2F11%2FRomantic-Rebellion-JMc-2024.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Africa is a continent that experiences financial\, disease and mental health challenges. Yet\, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO)\, Africa receives the least amount of mental health services. \nConversely\, Africa is rich in colour\, beauty\, and creative expression. Brigitte has witnessed the great beauty of the people\, the generosity they show one another\, and their smiles and laughter. The colours of their clothing and the breathtaking landscapes of the indigenous Maasai highlands are also a highlight for the artist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Brigitte Marie Pascal has delved in and out of art for almost 6 decades\, she began drawing portraits from the age of 3. Her exhibition is a political stance in an area that she feels passionate about: Africa\, the pain and the beauty. \nBrigitte is a qualified art therapist and psychotherapist in private practice\, spanning 15 years. For the past 10 years\, she has worked in the area of ‘art as medicine’ with children; adolescents; adults; and recently\, orphans in Africa who have experienced trauma. She delivers her evidence-based art therapy program to help clients externalise their trauma. These traumas can be domestic violence\, sexual abuse\, loss of a parent to suicide and parental substance use. Brigitte is currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate. Her thesis research project qualitatively assesses the healing powers of art. She is also an educator at IKON Institute of Australia teaching Bachelors in Art Therapy and Psychotherapy; College of Applied Professions (ACAP) Masters of Psychotherapy; and James Cook University. She is currently\, remotely\, training the management team in the Morning Star Children’s Home\, an orphanage in Naivasha\, Kenya.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1728694928247-6db50be3-f9ba”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night \nTuesday 22 October 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Pristine and remote areas are her passion. She uses her emotional response to capture the essence of the land- in colour texture and movement. \nTerry’s love of nature came from living in an aboriginal community in far North Queensland where she volunteered to teach arts to the community. \nShe has had over 28 solo exhibitions and her work is held in public and private collections both here and abroad. Her paintings can be found in the Federal Government offices in Brisbane\, The State Library of Brisbane and Regional Galleries. \nTerry’s latest body of work has been done over three years with nine seperate painting trips across the top end of Australia. Fortyfivedownstairs gallery is situated in Flinders Lane on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong/ Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nations who have been making art and textiles for over 40\,000 years. More recently\, Flinders Lane was the centre of Melbourne’s clothing industry\, or ‘rag trade’. This textile history adds a layered backdrop to the exhibition. \nThe contributing artists use traditional and non-traditional needlework practices and materials in innovative ways within a fine arts practice. Each artist has meticulously worked and reworked textiles and threads\, offering expanded interpretations of history\, origins and place – honouring the past through preserving its memories while forging new narratives. \nThis exhibition has been supported by a City of Melbourne Arts Grant. \nImages: \n1. Textiles can hold memories and stories. Helvi uses industrial textiles to make artworks that blend the past and present. Her work delves into themes of grief\, change\, and embodied sensing. Through her work she connects the viewer and the artwork to explore broader social issues and human experience. She makes art that invites the viewer into a space for reflection. By using scale and materials\, Helvi wants viewers to be aware of their own bodies when they view her work. Helvi includes absurdist gestures in drawings\, movement and forms across her practice. This introduces elements of lightness and amusement. Helvi’s practice plays with the formal language of sculpture. She uses the flexibility of textiles to adapt the way that galleries traditionally exhibit and install artworks. Helvi Apted (Finnish/Australian) was born Djilang/Geelong. She has been a finalist in the Darebin Art Prize\, a recipient of the R.L. Foote Design Studio Award and the Masters Mentoring VCA Art Award. Helvi has exhibited at Blindside\, George Paton Gallery\, Trocadero Art Space\, Unassigned Gallery\, and the 2023 VCA Art Grad Show. Helvi is exhibiting at Linden New Art Project Space in October 2024. She is completing a Master of Contemporary Art at the VCA. \n  \nElise Cakebread \nElise Cakebread works across textiles\, sculpture\, installation and public art. Elise is driven by experimentation within traditional textile processes and techniques. Her work explores materiality\, tactility\, sustainability\, disposability\, and ornamentation. Through her artistic process\, Elise strives to achieve a form of true abstraction – an abstraction of materials that transcends their original context and significance. By repurposing discarded waste materials into intricate compositions\, she aims to strip away preconceived notions of value and utility\, allowing the inherent qualities of each material to shine through in unexpected and compelling ways. This approach not only challenges conventional definitions of abstraction but also invites viewers to contemplate the essence of materiality itself\, prompting a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things. Elise has collaborated with The Artling\, Gorman\, Dulux\, alt.material\, Local/Actual\, The Monolonglo Group\, SPACE furniture and Capella Sydney. Elise has exhibited at Linden New Art\, CRAFT Melbourne\, The Australian Tapestry Workshop\, Design Tasmania\, and The Australian Design Centre. She has been a finalist for the Northern Beaches Environmental Art Award and for the KAAF Art Award. Her work has been featured in Vogue Living\, Yellowtrace\, Grand Designs\, and The Design Files. \nElise holds a Bachelor of Arts – Textiles (with distinction) from RMIT (2012) and a Bachelor of Creative Arts from The Univeristy of Melbourne (2007). In 2022 Elise was awarded the Regional Arts Victoria Creative Fellowship. \n  \nJanelle Evans \nJanelle Evans (Dharug) is a multi-disciplinary visual artist\, curator and writer\, currently living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). Janelle’s work is informed by her cultural and ancestral connections to Country\, in which she seeks to question and disrupt the narrative of British and European first contact encounters\, and to create a counter-discourse to resultant mythologies that have formed in the national consciousness. Janelle has exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and biennales in Australia\, Japan and France and her works are held in public and private collections. Janelle has had artist residencies at Bundanon\, Tokyo Geidai\, and at Teerk-Roo-Ra\, in Queensland’s Moreton Bay. She has worked collaboratively with First Nations and other artists on several public and institutional art commissions for The State Library of Queensland\, The Australian War Memorial\, 4A Contemporary Asian Arts and Campbelltown Art Centre for the Sydney Festival. Janelle holds a PhD in Fine Art from Sydney College of the Arts\, University of Sydney and is currently Head\, Master of Contemporary Art at Victorian College of the Arts\, University of Melbourne. \n  \nRebecca George \nRebecca George is a Melbourne / Naarm based artist exploring patterns and shapes and connections between science\, nature and art. She has an engineering and manufacturing background and brings a love of process to her art practice. Repetition\, shadows\, mathematical shapes and perspective feature in her work. The use of found\, recycled or recyclable materials is important. She thinks through making. Rebecca started her art practice making hyperbolic crochet sculptures and is expanding it by introducing printmaking\, collage\, ceramics\, woodwork\, bronze casting and welding\, finding new applications for common materials. Rebecca won the Heide at Home Maquette Challenge in 2021. She was commissioned by Knox to be part of their Immerse Program in 2021 with an installation at Stamford Park Homestead. She has exhibited in Melbourne Design Fringe in 2021 and 2023\, and with Naarm Textiles Collective at fortyfivedownstairs and Assembly Point in 2022\, 2023 and 2024. Her work was included in the Australian Textile Art Award 2022. As a Grampian Arts tutor in 2023\, she exhibited at Ararat Gallery TAMA. Rebecca is completing a Master of Contemporary Art at the VCA in 2024. \n  \nPhong Chi Lai \nPhong Chi Lai (Studio PCL) is a Naarm/Melbourne-based designer/maker specialising in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork. Previously a shoe designer/maker\, Phong took the opportunity to work in textile-based social enterprises in Asia\, reinforcing his artisan ethos. Taking inspiration from these experiences\, he developed his textile practice upon returning to Australia in 2018. Using upcycled/deadstock fabrics and natural dyes\, Phong takes a considered and intuitive approach\, responding to materials and his surroundings. He applies traditional techniques; hand-quilting\, assemblage and patchwork with an overtly free hand approach to build compositional complexity. Phong  has exhibited at The Wangaratta Art Gallery\, QuiltCon (USA)\, School House Studios Gallery\, Linden New Art Gallery and The Australian Tapestry Workshop. His work ‘Creating Character’ won Best Object Design at Design Fringe 2023\, Phong is a 2024 Artist in Residence at The Australian Tapestry Workshop and a finalist in The Irene Davis International Tapestry Prize. In her textile practice\, she explores her surroundings and interprets what she sees through embroidery. Her work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom\, Netherlands\, Canada and Australia. Tamara’s practice engages with the natural environment recreating images and shapes in her embroidered works in 2 and 3D form. In her work she is able to portray social issues including environment\, climate change and the treatment of asylum seekers. Textiles are the perfect medium for expressing thoughts using hand and machine stitching. Tamara works with found materials and finds joy in the unexpected uses that can be found for them. She loves this unpredictability and enjoys the inventiveness necessary to transform them. She uses materials that are reclaimed\, things with a history that have been discarded and might otherwise end up in landfill. Tamara was invited to Curtain Springs for a residency in 2019\, a finalist in the John Villiers Art Prize 2021 and the Australian Textile Art Award 2022 along with exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions. Her recent projects include facilitating the Moreland Quilt in 2017 – a community arts project\, exhibiting in Melbourne galleries and teaching workshops in hand embroidery\, free machine embroidery\, mending skills and garment reinvention. Shannon has a fascination with the deconstruction and reparation of cloth to create textile works that considers intimacy to connect with conditions of the human experience. Informed by feminist theories\, she presents clothing as a direct representation of the body’s experience. Unpicking and piecing together discarded clothing with fabric remnants\, she creates textile sites that not only trace histories but materially links\, joins and attaches us to them. Shannon recently completed a Masters in Contemporary Art with first class honours at Victoria College of the Arts at Melbourne University. She has exhibited at The Australian Tapestry Workshop\, VCA grad-show\, VCA Artspace\, Linden New Art Project Space and George Paton Gallery.
