This progressive painting and body of work cascades as a visual journal of her time spent in Wentworth Falls. Anthea connected with the breath-taking nature of the sacred land of the Barkindrji river people and Gundungurra people. Anthea painted her connection to energy through lyrical abstraction and sensation that was found in the metaphysical energies in the earth and specifically the birdlife that consumed her during her stay in the Blue Mountains. This work is accompanied by tufted paintings that ground the avian energies\, through bulbs\, sunlight\, and landscapes of the elemental spirits of earth\, water\, air\, fire. \n  \nExhibition Text by Nirmala Krishnan PH.D \nAvian Consciousness in Flight\, an avian consciousness\, a winged geometry echoing with vibrational intelligence\, weaving songs of energy through spirals\, waves\, and multidimensional grids. The spirals at each end are feathers of ascension\, charting the soul’s flight inward and outward\, always returning to Source. Zigzags and waveforms ripple like wings mid-beat\, awakening the central chord\, unlocking codes hidden in bone and breath. \nLayer upon layer moves like wind currents\, etheric\, astral\, physical flowing together in interdimensional flight. Dots and curves are sky-beacons: nodes of intent pulsing across space\, as in cell into cell. At the heart\, a spiral sun the galactic nest radiates light codes. Infinity loops glide like eternal flight paths\, connecting mind to higher skies. Colours in harmony\, rhythm golds of solar wisdom\, greens of forest breath\, violets of crown-lit skies\, all in harmony\, all in motion\, all in flight. Golden grids shimmer like a lattice of sky-bound feathers\, the Matrix of Form\, unseen but always present\, holding the divine architecture of becoming.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Anthea Vayonitis is a Melbourne-based emerging artist\, graduating in Master of Fine Art at RMIT\, Melbourne\, Naarm. In 1995 Anthea completed a Bachelor of Fashion Design\, RMIT\, Melbourne\, Naarm\, alongside experienced training in Dance. Anthea works with painting through an intuitive process. Abstraction\, colour and sensation are explored through the metaphysical energies in nature. Like a dance\, one mark informs another and in creating a personal lexicon\, energy is represented as life force. She has participated in several art workshops led by Australian artist Yvette Coppersmith. Anthea took part of an artist residency at Loaf Gallery\, formerly known as Landslide\, Wentworth Falls\, Blue Mountains\, where is also had a studio visit with Australian artist\, Gene A ‘Hern. Anthea has painted for Cathy Freeman and presented works for her private collection. \nRecent Solo exhibitions include\, The Star\, the Sphere\, Helios\, Ra and the Golden Hour\, Rubicon ARI\, Melbourne\, 2025\, Gaia’s Golden Hour\, Brunswick Street Gallery\, Melbourne\, 2025\, Connective Chromatic Energies and Sensations\, Rubicon ARI\, Melbourne\, 2024\, Chromatic Sensations Of Spaces Between Spaces \, No Vacancy Gallery\, Melbourne\, 2024. When I had only 10% hearing as a Deaf child\, I was able to wear hearing aids and heard many sounds that became visuals. I have been using my artistic process to meditate on those memories into colour lines as notes. Working on this large 3-meter long work\, I filmed a portion of myself in creation process and saw my memories of those sounds play out in my movements and I chose music with the help of my hearing partner Zoe\, that fit just right with this work just like that. I recorded those notes of my memories of each section along the paper in white pen and pastel on the black that acts as a veil for memories of sound from Deaf ears.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Chelle Destefano is a Deaf multidisciplinary artist working in drawing\, painting\, printmaking\, performance work and textiles. Her works currently centre around memory and identity exploring childhood memories and her inner-child which is an important part of her identity and her Deaf experiences. Chelle believes Auslan should be a site of resistance against audism and oppression for the Deaf culture and Deaf community. Recently Chelle was selected for the Art Gallery of Ballarat exhibition program to have a solo exhibition later this year. Chelle has been a finalist in many art prizes including the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Prize\, Wyndham Art Prize\, Nillumbik Art Prize\, Castlemaine’s Print Prize\, Kedumba Drawing Prize\, Incinerator Art Award\, Footscray Art Award\, Lyn McCrea Drawing Prize and the Lake Art Prize. My art explores tension between illumination and obscurity\, inviting viewers to experience drama through contrast. In “Silence in Shadow\,” I bring together oil paintings\, photography with gold or silver leaf to evoke the spirit of Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro. \nThe exhibition’s central theme is the interplay of ‘light and darkness’\, where moments of revelation and mystery emerge from contrast. Inspired by Caravaggio’s mastery of tenebrism\, I present subjects that appear to float on a void\, illuminated by an almost theatrical beam. These works delve into the beauty that light can reveal within darkness\, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own experiences of clarity and enigma. \nMaterials & Process\n-Oil paintings of vibrantly coloured still lives set against deep\, dark backgrounds\n-Black and white photographs hand painted with delicate tints and gold or silver highlights\, a whisper of luxury that punctuates areas of light. \nMy process embraces patience and precision: the photographic hand-painting demands careful attention\, while oil studies require meticulous layering to achieve the desired depth. \nI invite you to step into these contrasts and discover your own moments of illumination within the ‘silence and shadow’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Studios: Daylesford\, Australia & Citta Di Castello\, Italy\nWebsite: http://www.brianreberger.com\nEmail: brianreberger@gmail.com\nPhone: 0407 359 989 \nEducation\n1982: Diploma in Fine Art (Painting)\, Swinburne University of Technology (Prahran College)\, Melbourne\, Australia \nSelected Exhibitions – Solo\n2026 – “Silence in Shadow” 45 Downstairs\, Melbourne (Oil Paintings & Hand Painted Photographs)\n2023 – “Collezione Appassionata” Palazzo Del Podesta\, Citta di Castello\, ITALY (Charcoal Paintings & Hand Painted Photographs)\n2022 – “My Italian Life” Steps Gallery\, Carlton (Retrospective Exhibition)\n2022 – “My Italian Life” (Online Exhibition)\n2018 – “A Journey to New Beginnings\,” Steps Gallery\, Carlton (Charcoal Paintings)\n2016 – “Perspectives & Curioso\,” Steps Gallery\, Carlton (Charcoal Paintings)\n2015 – “Momenti Catturati\,” The Art Vault\, Mildura (Painting & Drawing)\n2015 – Convent Gallery\, Daylesford (Charcoal\, Pastel & Oil Paintings)\n2014 – “All That Glitters\,” Steps Gallery\, Carlton (Charcoal with Gold & Silver Leaf)\n2013 – “Italia-che Passione\,” Italian Institute of Culture\, Melbourne (Painting & Drawing)\n2012 – Steps Gallery\, Carlton (Painting & Drawing)\n2011 – Ballarat Foto Biennale\, Mercato @ Daylesford (Hand Painted Photographs)\n2006 – Hotel Sofitel\, Melbourne (Charcoal)\n2004/05 – Mercato @ Daylesford (Pastel & Charcoal)\n2002/03 – Hotel Sofitel\, Le Restaurant\, Melbourne (Pastel)\n2001/02 – Hotel Sofitel\, Atrium Gallery\, Melbourne (Pastel)\n2001 – Convent Gallery\, Daylesford (Photographic & Pastel)\n2000 – Chiara Goya Gallery\, Fitzroy (Pastel\, “Passionate Perspectives”)\n1999 – Convent Gallery\, Daylesford (“Italian Journey” – Photographic)\n1991 – Guilfoyles\, South Yarra (Pastel) \nSelected Exhibitions – Group\n2019\, 2017 – DMROS Open Studios Participant\n2013 – “The Three Amici\,” Bowen Hill Studio\, Buninyong (with Doug Wright & Anne Saunders)\n2010 – “Figure & Form: Five Artists\,” Greenwood Gallery\, South Melbourne (Oils & Charcoals)\n2005 – “When Fashion Meets Art\,” Tremayne\, Toorak (Pastel & Charcoal)\n2001 – Goya Gallery\, Melbourne (“50 Most Collectable Artists\,” Pastel)\n1982 – Hawthorn City Art Gallery (Graduate Exhibition) \nLectures & Workshops\n2001 & 2002 – Lectures to National Gallery of Victoria Society (Pastel Painting) \nCollections\nWorks held in private collections in Australia\, Asia\, Italy\, America\, England\, and Lebanon. \nPress\nEditorial coverage in Australia\, Italy\, and America. \nArtistic Travel\nExtensive travel for art practice\, photography\, and painting\, including:\nItaly  (2025\, 2024\, 2022\, 2019\, 2018\, 2017\, 2016\, 2015\, 2007\, 2001)\nEurope (2013\, 2009\, 2005\, 2003)\nVietnam\, Cambodia & Laos (2012)\nIndia & Indonesia (2011\, 2004)\nNew Zealand (2004)\nThailand (2002)\nAmerica (2001)[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Shadforth Financial Group                               Travel Professionals                                        Fine Wines of the King Valley \n                                                                                   \n  \n[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”PURCHASE AN ARTWORK” color=”black” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fgallery-shop-3603.myshopify.com%2Fcollections%2Fsilence-in-shadow”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

If you would like to purchase a package to see multiple concerts at a reduced price\, click HERE. \n\nOpening Night: Hamlet\, Ophelia and a Midsummer Night\nTuesday 21 April\, 7:30pm \nTo open the 2026 Chamber Music Festival\, pianists Coady Green\, Ian Munro and Charlotte Roberts will be joined by renowned actor Helen Morse to present a program inspired by the Bard – Edward MacDowell’s Hamlet and Ophelia Opus 22 arranged for two pianos\, Sally Beamish’s Sonnets for three pianists on two pianos (narrated by Morse)\, Liszt’s Hamlet S.644 arranged for two pianos\, and Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Opus 61 arranged for four hands (narrated by Morse). \nBUY TICKETS \n\nDante’s Lovers and Visionaries\nWednesday 22 April\, 7:30pm \nInspired by Dante’s La Commedia\, this evocative program traces a journey from the torments of Inferno to the redemptive vision of Paradise. Liszt’s monumental Après une lecture du Dante features amongst a sequence of works exploring Dante’s most compelling figures\, including the tragic Francesca da Rimini. At the heart of the concert is the world-premiere of Gordon Kerry’s major song cycle Dante and Beatrice\, performed by soprano Rachel Joyce\, mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd\, tenor Boyd Owen\, and baritone Christopher Hillier. Drawing on Sir Samuel Griffith’s English translation (OUP\, 1911)\, with story adaptation by Margot Costanzo and libretto by Costanzo and Kerry\, the cycle charts Dante’s spiritual passage toward Beatrice. Music by Granados and new commissions\, including Gulliver Poole’s Paper Love\, create an unmissable Dantean tableau. \nbuy tickets \n\nBeethoven 9th Symphony arranged by Franz Liszt\nThursday 23 April\, 7:30pm \nLegendary Australian pianist Michael Leslie returns from Germany to join Melbourne virtuoso Peter de Jager for a monumental musical event: Franz Liszt’s epic two-piano arrangement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. A towering feat of pianistic imagination\, Liszt’s arrangement is a complete re-creation of Beethoven’s orchestral\, choral\, and solo forces through the hands of just two performers. In this dazzlingly difficult tour de force\, two pianists at two pianos conjure the full sonic architecture of the symphony\, from its elemental opening to the transcendence of the “Ode to Joy.” Liszt\, himself the greatest piano virtuoso of the nineteenth century\, created these symphonic transcriptions to bring the orchestral canon to wider audiences before the age of recording. Today\, the Ninth Symphony arrangement remains one of the rarest and most formidable works in the entire piano duet repertoire\, seldom performed\, and even more rarely attempted live in concert. \nbuy tickets \n\nMy Favourite Penis Poems (and Other Love Stories)\nFriday 24 April\, 7:30pm \nPulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici was one of the first major classical composers to fully embrace queerness in a radical act of joy\, eroticism\, and defiance. This concert highlights two sides of Del Tredici’s queer expression. There’s the outrageously camp My Favourite Penis Poems – a virtuosic\, hilarious\, and unabashed song cycle setting his favourite poems on the rise and fall of His Majesty\, the Penis – and the deeply moving Gay Life – a meditative and tender exploration of queer identity\, composed in 2001. Both works receive their Australian premieres\, performed by a sensational ensemble of musicians including acclaimed American pianist and Del Tredici’s longtime friend\, Marc Peloquin\, baritone Bailey Montgomerie\, tenor Boyd Owen\, and soprano Marjorie Hannah. \nbuy tickets \n\nFrom Verona to Manhattan: Romeo and Juliet in Music\nSaturday 25 April\, 7:30pm \nOpening with Bellini’s rarely heard overture on the warring Montagues and Capulets\, this celebration of Shakespeare’s timeless love story continues with Linda Kouvaras’ The Nurse’s Curse from She Who Should Have Been a Queen\, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story for two pianos\, the Australian premiere of Tchaikovsky’s epic Romeo and Juliet Overture arranged for two pianos by Karl Klindworth\, and Ned Rorem’s Four Dialogues\, a witty and lyrical set for two voices and two pianos. Performers include pianists Coady Green and Marc Peloquin and soprano Elena Xanthoudakis. \nbuy tickets \n\nThe Melbourne Mozart Project \nSunday 26 April and Sunday 3 May \nClick HERE for more information on this exciting series of events. \n\nBrahms\, Liszt & Mendelssohn: Hungarian Fire and Italian Light\nTuesday 28 April\, 7:30pm \nPerformers Josephine Vains (cello)\, Sofija Kirsanova (violin)\, Coady Green (piano)\, and Ricardo Roche Idini (piano) combine forces in this expansive celebration of Romantic colour\, vitality\, and collective virtuosity. The program begins with the complete set of 21 Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms. Arranged for piano four hands\, violin and cello\, and overflowing with melodic buoyancy\, rhythmic bite and emotional depth\, these dances remain among Brahms’s most captivating works. This is followed by Franz Liszt’s blazingly virtuosic Hungarian Rhapsody\, also arranged for piano four hands with strings\, and an arrangement of Felix Mendelssohn’s exuberant Symphony No. 4\, the Italian\, whose sunlit energy and lyrical sweep bring the concert to a jubilant close. \nbuy tickets \n\nMeta Cohen and Olivier Messiaen: Prophecy and Eternity\nThursday 30 April\, 7:30pm \nA rare opportunity to encounter one of the twentieth century’s great visionary masterworks: Olivier Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen\, performed by Coady Green and Marc Peloquin on two pianos. Composed during the Second World War\, this vast\, mystical meditation moves from creation and love to judgment and eternity\, revealing Messiaen as theologian\, mystic\, and ecstatic colourist. The program opens with Delphi Songs by Meta Cohen\, performed by Jessica Aszodi and Coady Green\, a haunting cycle inspired by prophecy and the final Oracle of Delphi\, whose voice foretold the end of her own sacred order. Also featured is Cohen’s brand new piano suite The Warning Never Heard\, based on the myth of Cassandra. Spanning millennia\, Cohen’s work contemplates revelation\, authority\, and the fading boundary between divine utterance and human mortality. \nbuy tickets \n\nThe Crossing Machine performs The Juliet Letters by Elvis Costello and The Brodsky Quartet\nFriday 1 May\, 7:30pm   \nMelbourne string quartet The Crossing Machine (violinists Marianne Rothschild and Matthew Rigby\, violist Margaret Butcher and cellist Charlotte Jacke) will be joined by vocalist Jordan Z to perform The Juliet Letters\, the genre-defying song cycle created by Elvis Costello in collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet. Originally released in 1993\, The Juliet Letters is a sequence of letters written to Shakespeare’s Juliet\, revealing a gallery of fractured lives\, longing\, regret\, and dark wit. Since beginning this project in 2018\, The Crossing Machine has been breathing new life into the work\, approaching it with deep respect for the score while bringing a distinctly contemporary energy and emotional clarity. The quartet is currently in the final stages of an exciting new CD release and this performance forms part of a small number of anticipated launch concerts planned for 2026. \nbuy tickets \n\nTriptych of Shadows: Satie\, Ullmann\, Kouvaras\nSaturday 2 May\, 7:30pm\n \nMeditations on love\, death\, memory\, and what remains \nErik Satie’s luminous Socrate\, performed by soprano Lily Flynn and pianist Coady Green\, offers a serene\, translucent meditation on the philosopher’s final hours\, a work the composer called a “symphony in white.” Viktor Ullmann’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke\, with actor Paul English and Green\, transforms Rilke’s prose poem into a hallucinatory wartime monodrama composed in Theresienstadt before Ullmann’s death in Auschwitz. The program concludes with a world-premiere preview of Linda Kouvaras’s The Boarding House\, Carlton\, 1972: Those that Remain\, narrated by Tiriki Onus and featuring baritone Alex Owens\, with text by Richard Ward\, a searing reimagining of memory\, violence\, and 1970s Melbourne. \nBuy tickets  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Melbourne Mozart Project” tab_id=”1770769982191-adcb46ea-dc4c”][vc_column_text css=””]The Melbourne Mozart Project Part I: Four Concerts of Mozart Piano Concertos in One Day\nSunday 26 April \nA festival within a festival\, The Melbourne Mozart Project celebrates Mozart through two parallel musical journeys. From the beginning\, the vision was to create an intensive two-week program where audiences could experience both beloved masterworks and bold new music side by side\, and where diversity of voices\, styles\, and perspectives is genuinely at the centre of the programming. \nWhat do you love about performing at fortyfivedownstairs? \nI first performed at fortyfivedownstairs in 2008\, when I was living in London and returning to Australia every year or two. I loved it immediately\, for both its resonance and captivating atmosphere. It is an unexpected “loft-style” performance space of the kind that you find in New York and Berlin. I also know so many colleagues – actors\, visual artists\, sound designers and musicians – who share this love\, so it has a community spirit as well. \nFor a patron who hasn’t attended a Chamber Music Festival event\, what would you recommend as an introduction?  \nTry opening night – Helen Morse reciting excerpts from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights’ Dream\, accompanied by Mendelssohn’s beautiful (and virtuosic) incidental music… Or come along to a night inspired by Romeo and Juliet\, with visiting American virtuoso Marc Peloquin\, featuring works from Tchaikovsky to Bernstein… Or a vivid night with the complete Brahms Hungarian Dances\, arranged for piano four hands\, violin and cello\, paired with Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony. Or the world-premiere of Gordon Kerry’s new song cycle Dante and Beatrice in a concert of works inspired by Dante… Or the complete works by Mozart for piano four hands and two pianos in two concerts on Sunday May 3rd – something you’ll likely never experience again in this way. There’s also the monumental Liszt arrangement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for two pianos\, a piece so rarely performed\, with visiting guest artists Michael Leslie and Peter de Jager. \nAnother monumental work for two pianos that many people love but is rarely played is Messiaen’s exquisite Visions de l’Amen\, which I will be playing with guest Marc Peloquin. This is an enormous work\, and really very special. We are pairing it with Meta Cohen’s evocative song cycle on the statements of the oracle at Delphi – Delphi Songs.  \nAnd what would you suggest to the patron who sees numerous live music performances who is looking for something new and surprising?   \nThe late\, Pulitzer-Prize-Winning American composer David Del Tredici features in the festival\, with two Australian premieres – his profoundly moving song-cycle for baritone and piano\, Gay Life\, and the outrageous My Favourite Penis Poems. Need I say more? \nFor regular patrons\, I wouldn’t miss the Messiaen Visions de l’Amen\, which is such a great\, epic work. Another wonderful surprise is the complete Elvis Costello Juliet Letters\, performed by the Melbourne string quartet The Crossing Machine\, with guest vocalist Jordan Z. \nAlso in the new and surprising category – a performance of a new song cycle for baritone\, piano and narrator by Linda Kouvaras\, with narration about local (and very surprising) stories from Carlton… this is paired with a rare performance of Satie’s beautiful Socrate\, taking text from Plato\, and Viktor Ullman’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke\, with actor Paul English\, which transforms Rilke’s prose poem into a hallucinatory wartime monodrama composed in Theresienstadt before Ullmann’s death in Auschwitz.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Having met years ago as students at the Victorian Artists Society\, the two have since returned to the same halls to teach together\, all while maintaining an ongoing dialogue about the craft of painting. \nWhile their focuses have diverged – Fiona into the intimate world of portraiture and still life\, and Lana into the expansive reach of the landscape – their work continues to speak a similar language. \nIn this exhibition\, the paintings are in conversation with one another. There is a subtle reciprocity on the canvas: a shared tonal palette here\, a familiar energy in the brushwork there. Each nods to one another’s strengths\, reflecting a mutual influence built over years of discussing the craft of painting and supporting each other’s creative journey. \nFiona’s work remains a meditation on domestic realism\, finding poignancy in the “here and now” through commonplace objects and familiar faces. Lana’s landscapes explore colour and atmosphere\, capturing the spirit of the natural world. Each work is inspired by a memory of a specific place and being absorbed in the natural surroundings. This has been a continuing theme in Laura’s work in recent years\, and it also speaks to a broader need to seek our own forms of stillness\, whether in nature or elsewhere. \nThe title of the exhibition ‘sea like a mirror’\, is a phrase drawn from the Beaufort wind force scale\, a system developed to determine wind force through observations of the surrounding environment. But while this phrase is reflective of calm conditions and stillness\, if ‘sea like a mirror’ is read a different way\, it could be about seeing in the environment a reflection of ourselves. \nThe artworks in the exhibition are all created with watercolour on paper\, either as paintings\, collages\, sculptures or installations and using processes of painting\, layering\, attaching\, folding\, sewing\, or suspending. While watercolour paint dries quickly\, the other processes are all usually slow and become a meditative practice in themselves. \nThis project has been supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Laura Williams is an artist from the south-west of Western Australia\, now based in Melbourne. Then\, after a decade away\, she returns to Africa and brings back a suitcase full of hilarious\, unforgettable stories. No filters\, no small talk – just big laughs. \nBuy tickets \n\nChris Parker\nTake a Good Hard Look at Me \nHello! I’ve been vying for your attention for a long time now. I’d comfortably say\, it’s been 30 years. Thirty years of trying to make people look at me. In that time there have been many attempts to try and masquerade it as something “important” or “educational” but the longer I’ve sat with it\, the more I’ve come to accept that it could maybe just be vanity. So I won’t sugar coat it in the blurb. There’re no secrets about to be dished\, no valuable lesson to take away. I’m just a 35-year-old gay man\, who was told there was something special about him as a kid and has been grappling with that ever since\, standing in front of an audience asking them to take a good hard look at ME! \nBuy tickets \n\nJKS: a Comedy(?)\nBy Tom Ballard \nThe sell-out Melbourne Fringe hit returns for six shows only! \nA weekly stand-up gig. Backstage. \nIn between their sets\, five comedians are laughing\, bitching and talking shit. \nIt’s all fun and games… until they hear the news: a legend has died. \nDepending on who you ask\, he either leaves behind a lifetime of laughter\, or a legacy of bigotry and pain. Or maybe both. Or neither… \nThe comics get stuck in: was this guy actually funny\, or just embarrassing? Is being “funny” all that matters\, anyway? What’s even the point of telling jokes? How much harm (or good) can they ever do? How dark and f#%ked up can you go? Who can say what – and who decides? \nAs the gig carries on in the background\, the comics go to war on ‘The Big Question’ – what is comedy even for? \nA new (funny) play about what it means to be funny. \nStarring Bev Killick (Deadloch)\, Kevin Hofbauer (Dear Life)\, Tom Ballard (Tonightly)\, Tiana Hogben (Thank God You’re Here) and Lauren Bonner (Going Under). \nWritten by Tom Ballard. \nDirected by Ben Russell (Thank God You’re Here). \nBuy tickets \n\nTape Face\n20 \nCelebrating 20 years of TAPE FACE – the show returns to Australia for the first time in over 10 years! \nMime with noise\, stand-up with no talking\, drama with no acting. Las Vegas headliner TAPE FACE has become a global sensation. See the critically award-winning show that started it all. Physical comedy and silent stand-up collide in an unforgettable performance that will leave you laughing\, gasping and lost for words. TAPE FACE has to be seen to be believed. \nBuy tickets \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Works may entertain\, surprise\, or unsettle\, using laughter to expose contradictions\, challenge authority\, critique politics or culture\, or simply revel in the joy of making something funny. \nThis exhibition is timed to coincide with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival\, which is taking over the theatre at fortyfivedownstairs. It draws from the familiar rituals that shape the season; time spent in gardens surrounded by native plants\, diving into open water\, fishing for the evening meal\, sharing drinks in the sun\, and driving up the coast with friends as the landscape rolls by. \nThe collection is less about documenting these activities and more about capturing their atmosphere and how they make us feel. It considers the weight of heat in the air\, the way long days seem to stretch endlessly\, and how light settles over everything with a kind of softness and intensity at once. These repeated experiences form a quiet rhythm\, one that feels instinctive and deeply personal. \nAt its core\, Summer’s Rhythm explores how these seasonal moments become part of who we are. The warmth of summer is not only physical but emotional; it slows us down\, draws us together\, and allows us to notice the beauty in what might otherwise feel ordinary. Through a focus on light\, texture\, and mood\, the collection invites viewers to reconnect with the subtle richness of an Australian summer and the sense of comfort and belonging it creates. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Adele Auchterlonie is a Tasmanian abstract expressionist artist and has been painting for six years. She creates bold\, vibrant works designed to bring energy into a space and evoke a strong emotional response. \nHer inspiration comes from everyday life and the beauty found in ordinary moments. Summer\, the ocean and the garden are constant influences. She grew up sailing\, and the rhythm and movement of the water continue to shape the way she paints. She is also inspired by long summer days\, warm light and time spent outdoors\, where heat softens everything and slows the pace of life. \nWorking primarily with mixed media on canvas\, Adele is drawn to expressive brushstrokes\, layered textures and intuitive mark making. Colour plays a central role in her practice and she uses it instinctively to capture movement and feeling. \nThrough her work\, she aims to capture the atmosphere of these familiar experiences and translate them into something expressive\, immersive and deeply felt.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Combining fine art photography\, couture garments\, sound\, and spatial design\, the exhibition explores memory as something lived\, embodied\, and continually shaping the present. \nExtending beyond the frame\, the installation transforms still images into sculptural garments. Davison’s photographs are printed onto fabric\, deconstructed\, and reassembled into couture gowns — allowing memory to move\, fold\, and breathe. The result is a layered experience that dissolves the boundaries between image\, body\, and lived experience. \nSet within a dreamlike garden environment\, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how memory is formed\, distorted\, preserved\, and worn. Sensory cues — water\, birdsong\, floral forms\, and sound — guide audiences through a contemplative space where perception slows and attention deepens. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Pam is an artist who has achieved recognition and awards for her photography\, short stories\, playwriting and poetry. Her process also involves contemporary media in order to reduce the size of the drawings.  Once completed\, each hand-drawn image is scanned and printed at half its size\, because this smallness further enhances its intense and detailed nature. \nA memory from the past acted as an initial impetus for theses drawings. Celia remembers her experience of learning to write by hand when she was a young schoolgirl. Her teacher would trace letters of the alphabet in the air\, explaining how to draw each individual shape. \nAn example of the influence of this early experience is ‘Vibrant Promise’\, (2024)\, with its curving sweeping lines\, which refer to the dynamic shape of the letter ‘S’\, and generates a sense of momentum and vibrancy as lines unfurl across the space. The drawing\, ‘Turn Under’\, (2024)\, references the shape of the letter ‘O’\, with hair-like lines spinning around a central circular space and crossing each other repeatedly. The lines are turning and sweeping\, under and over each other. Coloured lines\, turquoise and pink\, mingle and weave with overlapping flourishes. \nA sequence of new drawings followed when the artist’s connection to her early experience of alphabetical forms dropped away and\, instead\, she drew abstract images by hand\, using pen and ink as before. \n‘Inventive Impetus’\, (2025)\, is a cluster of dynamic\, sweeping lines forming diagonal.  It is an exploration of intense and intimate spaces. ‘Layered Endeavour\, (2025)\, is an example of the artist’s preoccupation with circular shapes\, where most of the lines are laid down independently\, gradually\, and building\, layer upon layer\, a construction that is mobile\, intense and detailed. \nIn her role as an artist for Note Printing Australia\, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank\, and producer of polymer banknotes for Australia and internationally\, Celia Bridle attended training in Switzerland. She was taught by a resident engraver in the skills of his profession and was shown how to interpret the engraving method in order to draw in the style of an engraver. The engraver worked under magnification\, (using a microscope)\, cutting fine lines into a metal surface. Once completed his engraving was ready for printing on the surface of a banknote. \nCelia Bridle’s artwork continues to be inspired by an assiduous approach to line and engraving’s measured configuration and intense immersion.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Celia Bridle lived in tropical Africa\, attending school and working there as a trainee teacher before leaving home and family to attend Art College in the UK. Four years later she graduated with a degree in Fine Art\, (Drawing and Painting). \nCelia worked as a high school art teacher for two years\, then as an artist in book publishing\, commissioned for an extensive range of subjects — botanical\, medical and scientific imagery. Her artwork was published in the UK and exhibited in Munich and London. \nWishing to see the world\, Celia went to Papua New Guinea with her partner\, continuing to draw for publication. Moving to Melbourne in 1985 she was commissioned by publishers\, then offered the position of illustrator in the Faculty of Archaeology\, La Trobe University. \nIn order to update her computer skills and build a better understanding of the potential of electronic media\, Celia studied part-time at the Dept of Creative Media\, RMIT\, graduating in 1999 with an Advanced Diploma of Art (Electronic Design and Interactive Media) \nHer role as an artist with Note Printing Australia spanned 2001-2004 which included training in Switzerland in the engraving style of drawing. In 2005 Celia was accepted to study drawing at The Slade School of Fine Art\, Summer School\, University College\, London\, and In 2007 she gained a Master of Fine Art at R MIT Melbourne. In 2005 she moved into a workspace in the city\, and was there\, in The Nicholas Building\, Flinders Lane\, until 2023\, when she relocated to Eltham\, Melbourne\, where she has a November 2025 workspace.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1769673422062-c4d392d7-4998″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 17 February\, 5pm – 7pm \n  \nFree Workshop \nSaturday 28 February\, 1pm – 2pm \nCelia Bridle will lead a guided pen and ink drawing session inspired by her latest exhibition[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The collection spans front-facing facades\, through stage doors\, and backstage\, featuring theatres from around the country and revealing the physical spaces that shape their cultural identity. Each work honours the character of these venues\, and the emotional history they hold for performers\, patrons\, and the community. \nAs a performer myself – having graduated as an actor at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2018 – there is a deep nostalgia when revisiting an old theatre. I’ve listened to countless stories from colleagues detailing the “second homes” they’ve formed in dressing rooms\, kitchenettes\, and pitch-black sidestage wings. This series serves as a way to commemorate those stories and preserve their memories. \nIn a post-COVID industry [especially in Melbourne] the significance of live theatre has deepened significantly. Spaces once taken for granted now carry deeper meaning\, both as cultural landmarks and as vessels for shared experiences. I seek to honour that significance by presenting theatres in a new light that elevates the beauty\, history\, and stories embedded in these buildings\, merging the boundaries of digital photography with fine-art presentation in a way that reflects and celebrates Australian theatre culture. \nMy first exhibition\, held at my Brunswick East studio in July 2024\, received recognition from industry leaders and marked the beginning of a broader mission: to create a visual archive of Australia’s theatre landscape. I hope to see the works proudly feature on peoples living room walls; hanging next to cherished posters and ticket stubs\, and the rooms of hotels that house touring artists so regularly. Australian Theatres Unveiled stands as an ongoing commitment to preserving and celebrating the venues that have shaped generations of performers and audiences across the country.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Cameron Grant is a Melbourne-based live performance photographer and Director of Parenthesy [a digital media production house]\, specialising in theatre\, musical theatre\, live music\, dance\, and circus. His work captures the emotion\, craft\, and energy of live performance\, helping preserve and elevate Australia’s vibrant performing arts community. \nDriven by a passion for storytelling and authenticity\, Cameron has quickly become one of Melbourne’s leading performance photographers. His images have appeared in international and local publications including Rolling Stone Magazine\, Deadline\, Disney Official\, and as a regular appearance in local news sites like The Guardian\, and Aussie Theatre. He has worked with major organisations such as Arts Centre Melbourne\, Michael Cassel Group\, GWB Entertainment\, and Crossroads Live\, providing photographic services across Australia and internationally on productions including recently seen Beetlejuice\, Miss Saigon\, The Talented Mr Ripley\, Anastasia\, and Disney’s The Lion King. \nIn 2024\, Cameron developed and presented the first instalment of “Australian Theatres Unveiled”\, a photographic series celebrating the architecture and heritage of Australia’s major theatre venues. The first instalment was exhibited at his Brunswick East studio\, drawing national industry leaders and strong public interest. The series continues to expand and the full collection will open at FortyFive Downstairs in February 2026\, showcasing theatre architecture as both cultural heritage and fine art. \nCameron continues to collaborate closely with artists and organisations to document their creative work with professionalism and care. Through Parenthesy\, he aims to strengthen and support Australia’s live performance sector in a post-COVID world\, producing high-quality imagery that celebrates\, sustains\, and shares the stories of the performing arts with honesty and impact. \n  \nExhibitions: \n2026: Solo exhibition – Australian Theatres Unveiled \n2024: Solo exhibition – Australian Theatres Unveiled \n2024: Group exhibition – Hillvale Photo Trophy \n  \nWebsite: parenthesyprints.com.au \nInstagram @parenthesyprints[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1765437706313-2a9132e3-7b08″][vc_column_text css=””]February 5th – February 14th \nVenue capacities are flexible\, however ticket distribution helps manage numbers. The exhibition will run from 24 March – 18 April 2026. \nWe’re looking for artworks that make us smirk\, snigger\, snort\, chuckle\, giggle\, lol\, crack up\, guffaw\, gasp for air\, pee our pants – or even literally die laughing. \nThis visual humour may take many forms\, including (but not limited to): satire and social critique\, wordplay and visual puns\, absurdity\, surrealism\, dark humour\, pop art\, playful disruption\, appropriation\, or just plain silliness. Works may entertain\, surprise\, or unsettle\, using laughter to expose contradictions\, challenge authority\, critique politics or culture\, or simply revel in the joy of making something funny. \nSubmissions are welcome across all mediums\, stylistic approaches\, and subject matter\, including painting\, photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, installation\, digital media\, and experimental practices. \nPlease note: \n\nCapacity for large 3D works and installations is limited.\nSmaller 3D works must be wall-hung or presented on a shelf (artists must supply their own display supports).\n\nPunchlines offers a great opportunity to show new work\, engage with collectors\, promote your practice\, or experiment within a professional gallery setting. Group exhibitions at fortyfivedownstairs allow artists to exhibit alongside both emerging and established peers without the pressure of a solo show. \nThis exhibition will coincide with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival\, which will be taking over the theatre at fortyfivedownstairs. Last year\, the MICF attracted 5\,000 patrons to our venue\, all of whom passed through the gallery before the comedy shows\, making this a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work to a large audience. \nExhibition Fees \nSubmitting an expression of interest is free. Only artists selected to exhibit will be required to pay the exhibition fee. \n\nUp to 6 artworks may be accepted per artist.\n1–2 artworks: $100 per artwork\n3 or more artworks: $80 per artwork\nStandard artwork size: 80 × 80 cm or under\nWorks larger than 80 cm on any side may attract a higher fee\n\nTerms & Conditions \n\nfortyfivedownstairs curates exhibitions carefully and may limit the number of works displayed per artist based on artwork size and available wall space.\nA 15% commission is retained on all sold works.\nSelected artists must sign an artist agreement outlining the rights and responsibilities of both artist and gallery.\nArtists must supply high-resolution images and full artwork details (title\, medium\, dimensions\, and price) by Monday 9 March 2026.\nAll artworks must be completed and delivered to the gallery by 5:00 PM\, Saturday 21 March 2026.\nThe exhibition will open with a public opening celebration from 5–7 PM on Tuesday 24 March 2026.\n\nHow to Apply \nTo submit your proposal\, please email gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com with the following: \n\nA short statement about the proposed artworks\nA short statement about your practice\nImages of the artworks\, including details: Title\, Year\, Medium\, Edition (if applicable)\, Dimensions\, and Price\n\nSUBMISSION DEADLINE: MONDAY 2 MARCH 2026\, MIDNIGHT[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Memory is never fixed; it is an unstable interplay between what is vividly recalled\, what is unconsciously fabricated\, and what slips quietly beyond reach. This tension lies at the core of my drawing practice. \nMy work emerges from the subconscious\, where memories do not announce themselves as linear narratives but surface instead through instinctive gestures. I rely on automatic drawing as a process of excavation\, allowing the hand to reveal traces of past experiences that the mind may only partially recognise. Each artwork becomes both an act of remembering and an acknowledgement of forgetting\, an attempt to map moments that are simultaneously clear and elusive. \nVivid memories manifest through dense colour\, intensity and texture. Strong\, determined shapes assert themselves confidently across the page\, reflecting recollections that remain intact and emotionally charged. In contrast\, fragmented or overlapping forms point to memories that are blurred\, conflicted or indecisive – echoes that feel present yet unresolved. \nI am especially drawn to false memories\, those subtle inventions of the subconscious that fill narrative voids. Ambiguity permeates my work as familiar forms are reimagined into shapes that feel both recognisable and alien. \nLost memories appear in areas left intentionally incomplete\, faded or erased. These quiet voids evoke haziness or absence\, suggesting the inevitable gaps that time creates. Sharp\, defined imagery surrounded by soft\, floating shapes represent memories that have endured while the surrounding context has dissolved. \nThe yupo paper itself becomes part of this narrative. Its unique surface retains traces of earlier marks\, allowing ghosts of previous layers to remain visible – much like the faint residues of forgotten experiences. \nUltimately\, memory is not a reliable archive but a creative\, continually revised act of the mind. Through my drawings\, I invite viewers to reflect on their own shifting recollections and consider how easily truth and fiction intertwine within the landscape of memory. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Education\n1989- Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Printmaking\, Monash University\, Caulfield \nSolo Exhibitions\n2022- Fortyfive Downstairs Gallery\, Melbourne\n2019- Acufitz\, Melbourne\n2018- Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Melbourne \nGroup Exhibitions\n2019- Emerge\, Brunswick Street Gallery\, Melbourne\n2018- Finalist in Life Abstracted\, Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Melbourne\n2008- Alafia Gallery\, Melbourne\nGasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n2007- Gasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n2006- Gasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n1990- Linden Gallery\, Melbourne\n1989- Caulfield Arts Complex\, Melbourne \nWebsite: alisonrussellart.com\nInstagram: @alisonrussellart[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1768272895838-ae13829c-8ea8″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 3 February\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The Highly Strung Players began appearing at fortyfivedownstairs in 2017. \nThe Innominable – a new play to be performed by Georgina Banks and Ellie Nielsen – introduces us to twin sisters in their fifties. They are waiting to collect their mother’s ashes. One of them (Glen-Rae) was named at birth. The other – known as the Innominable – was never named. Now she wants to know why. \nThe Siegfried Idyll – a duologue to be performed by Peter Rose and Claudio Bozzi – presents a seemingly contented gay couple contemplating the seismic repercussions of ‘a night at the opera’. Conrad is a capricious restaurateur\, Toby a long-suffering arborist. The Siegfried Idyll had one performance at fortyfivedownstairs in December 2024. \n“The Highly Strung Players’ original absurdist works are playful\, witty and multi-layered. Renowned wordsmith Peter Rose has a fine sense of what lies beneath the surface of relationships and social interaction. His clever duologues highlight our foibles and delusions with sensitivity and humour.” Helen Morse[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1a37e-8afc”][vc_column_text css=””]Georgina Banks – a writer\, facilitator\, and performer – was a professional actor in her twenties\, studying acting in New York and then working in theatre and television for over a decade (including Sydney Theatre Company\, Playbox\, Theatre South\, A Country Practice\, and Outback). In 2023\, she published her first book\, Back to Bangka. She began appearing with the Highly Strung Players in 2025. \nClaudio Bozzi has made two appearances with the Highly Strung Players: All Those Sunsets (2023) and The Siegfried Idyll (2024). A barrister and legal academic\, he is currently writing a book on the legalities of the Ukraine War. He prefers to spend the southern winter harvesting hay on his farm in Italy. \nEllie Nielsen holds a degree from VCA drama school and a Master of Creative Writing from RMIT University. As a Naarm (Melbourne)-based actor\, writer and dramaturg\, her work focuses on new and independent theatre. She is the author of the internationally published memoir\, Buying a Piece of Paris\, and has performed with the Highly Strung Players since 2023. \nPeter Rose is a poet\, novelist and memoirist. Attention\, Please! (2025) is his seventh book of poetry. Rose Boys\, a family memoir\, won the 2003 National Biography Award. He founded the Highly Strung Players in 1989 and revived it in 2017. His plays include the five-part The Ones. Their bond is fragile — some close\, others linked more by memory than friendship. When one of their own announces his transition\, the circle begins to fracture. Loyalties splinter\, old wounds reopen\, and the meaning of identity and belonging is fiercely contested. \nFunny\, sharp\, and deeply human\, The Placeholder explores how feminism\, friendship\, and chosen family collide — and how love is tested when those closest to us change in ways we never expected. \nDirected by Kitan Petkovski (The Inheritance) and performed by an extraordinary ensemble\, The Placeholder is a fearless and emotionally charged work about the radical act of living truthfully in a world that resists change. \nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria\, and has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ec55-c59a”][vc_column_text css=””]Writer: Ben MacEllen \nDirector: Kitan Petkovski \nCast: Oliver Ayres\, Meredith Rogers\, Brigid Gallacher\, Rebecca Bower\, Michelle Perera\, and Alessandra Merlo \nProducer: 5 Foot Entertainment | Chelsey Weisz \nSet and Costume Designer: Bethany J Fellows \nLighting Designer: Tim Bonser \nSound Designer: Ian Moorhead \nStage Manager: Charlotte Fischer \nDramaturgy Consultant: Kate Mulvany \nDirecting Intern: Grace McLaughlin \nHero image: Meagan Harding \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ec55-c59a”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $45\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39\nEARLYBIRD: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. A pivotal age of finding a place in my identity\, growing in my power as a woman\, navigating my morals\, beliefs\, relationships and solidifying my belonging in the world. My ideas arrive intuitively\, pulled from unique and transformative experiences that shifted how I see myself and the world around me. The ideas are executed through the art of surrealism\, where imagery becomes whimsical\, thought provoking\, and delightfully out of the ordinary.  I move between seriousness and playfulness in both life and art\, and I have always been drawn to childlike cartoons and dreamlike animation. That influence naturally spills into the work. \nFor this exhibition\, my focus was on self discovery\, so I naturally gravitated toward self portraits\, often nude. I like the idea of painting myself naked in both an exposing and vulnerable way\, as I discuss personal topics\, and also in a self appreciative\, therapeutic way\, where I’ve found that doing nude self portraits gave me a new appreciation and love for myself and my appearance. I am heavily influenced by music\, where it’s extremely common for musicians to make songs about themselves and their feelings and experiences\, and so I’ve taken those concepts and applied them to my art practice and now use art as a medium to talk about myself.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Micca is a self-taught oil painter born and raised in Perth\, Western Australia\, who moved to Melbourne in 2022. With a natural inclination toward creativity\, she recalls drawing as early as four years old\, finding joy in learning how to capture different objects and discovering new techniques to express the visions she imagined. At sixteen\, she experimented with oil paint for the first time and instantly fell in love with its richness and depth. Having never received formal art training\, Micca chose to explore her artistic path independently\, guided by intuition and curiosity. In 2022\, she held her first solo exhibition and is set to present her second in 2026. \nInfluenced by artists such as Mark Ryden\, Shaun Tan\, and Miles Johnston\, Micca believes art is limitless; free from rules\, categories\, or boundaries. She found everyday life to be repetitive and mundane\, and combined with growing up in an emotionally chaotic environment\, she found solace in surrealism\, where she could build imaginative\, mystical worlds far removed from the ordinary. Her work often blends whimsy with introspection\, using symbolism and dreamlike imagery to convey emotion and meaning. \nMicca’s ideas stem from her inner life: her thoughts\, emotions\, and reflections on personal experiences\, deeply rooted in her faith in God. She carries a profound curiosity for human behaviour and the unseen layers of experience\, often listening to psychology talks or interviews with people from all walks of life while she paints. Through this\, she seeks to understand how experiences shape individuals\, including herself\, and these explorations emerge in her art in unconventional ways.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1764983912121-79aa1f48-6619″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \n20 January\, 4-10pm \nBOOK TICKETS HERE[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”PRICELIST” color=”success” size=”lg” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.miccamoo.com%2Fprice-list”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Swan Hill (Victoria)\, Wamba Wamba country. As the wildlife flees through the bush from an unseen threat\, three Wamba Wamba warriors – Wirramanda\, Warru and Dindi – must survive a cat-and-mouse chase across country to warn their people of the oncoming colonialists. Led by a volatile captain\, the colonialists have their own internal power struggles to contend with. \nAfter sold out seasons at the Castlemaine State Festival and Yirramboi Festival in 2021\, Soul Of Possum makes its return to fortyfivedownstairs. \nPlaywright Brodie Murray (Wamba Wamba) draws on stories handed down from his grandfather and father to tell a historical thriller that explores the contrasting relationships settlers and Blak peoples have with Country\, ecology\, leadership and spirituality. Directed by Beng Oh and Balla Neba (movement director)\, with a stellar cast including Wimiya Woodley (Panawathi Girl and Operation Boomerang\, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company). \nReviews \n“Other theatre makers could learn from this stripped back but powerful production …  The play is a huge achievement for Brodie Murray\, Declan Furber Gillick\, and their collaborators. Submissions were open to everyone – no matter their age\, experience\, or background – and every piece entered is included in the exhibition. \nArtworks by children\, first-time creators\, emerging talents\, and established professionals are displayed side by side. An endless variety of styles and media is represented\, including painting\, drawing\, sketches\, prints\, textiles\, and small sculptural works. All pieces adhere to a single rule: each must measure no more than 20 x 20 cm. \nEach work is priced at $150\, irrespective of the artist’s experience or medium. The artworks are presented anonymously to level the playing field\, encouraging buyers to choose based solely on personal connection and aesthetic appeal. The identities of the artists are revealed only after a work is sold\, making every purchase a surprise and a celebration of artistic equality. \nThis year\, for the first time\, we will be awarding prizes during the opening night on Wednesday\, November 26\, from 5 to 7pm. The award categories include: Under 18 Prize\, Painting Prize\, Drawing Prize\, Print-Making Prize\, Sculptural Prize\, Photography Prize\, Textile Prize and Mixed-Media Prize. Three seemingly disparate scenes that fit together\, Russian-doll style\, into a celebration of the lost art of spoken erotica. A play about the kind of sex we think about\, and not the kind we have – the places we go in our heads when our bodies are otherwise occupied. Structured like a concerto\, but performed as a play\, with live diegetic music. A cellist. A drummer. At times\, a band. Sex is awkward and funny\, dangerous\, dark and joyous. Sometimes all at once. \nWhat if you were just a character in someone else’s fantasy? \nFootfalls by Samuel Beckett \nA woman paces in half-light\, caught in the suspended breath between absence and presence:  What remains when care has nothing left to hold?  When love is tethered to obligation\, and time loops endlessly back on itself? Samuel Beckett’s Footfalls is a meditation on grief\, devotion\, and the frail borders between. Celebrated artist Maude Davey embodies the role of May\, a woman bound by duty\, lost in quiet anguish\, her every step compelling us to confront the spaces between words – where time stretches thin\, and the heart beats with the quiet ache of a love that lingers. \nPhoto by Mark Gambino[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ebbb-7aac”][vc_column_text css=””]Dark Erotica Quartet \nDirector: Blake Barnard \nCast: Cait Spiker\, Matthew Connell\, and Tim Wotherspoon \nCellist: James Hazelden \nLighting Designer: Kris Chainey \nSet/costume designer: Oliver Hall \n  \nFootfalls \nDirector: Keith Brockett \nCast: Maude Davey \nLighting Designer: Kris Chainey \nSet/costume designer: Oliver Hall[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ebbb-7aac”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. Initially I constructed my compositions from patterns or shapes I found in nature. Over time I developed processes for layering and removing paint and pigment\, which allowed the images to develop in a more unplanned way. I love the physical qualities of paint and pigment so it’s easy for me to be seduced by their beautiful or interesting effects. While I do rely on these things to get a picture going\, I try to get past that and become absorbed with evoking a layered world of light\, movement and space. \nMy great-uncle was an artist called Carlyle Jackson who did lovely impressionist watercolours in the 1920’s and 30’s. I grew up with his work around me. I’ve only quite recently become aware there was a very vibrant art scene in Melbourne at this time which included Clarice Beckett and the tonalist group but also a group of more traditional landscape painters. I’ve become quite captivated by it all\, my house is filling up with landscapes from the era I’ve been collecting and eventually I decided ‘I might have a go!’ So I’ve been doing little paintings of scenes I encounter in my everyday life – walking the dogs\, driving round the Dandenong Ranges where I live or taking holidays here and there. It’s been quite an invigorating change for me after the arduous process of making my big abstract canvasses. I still don’t know whether all my years of abstract work is of any assistance with the landscapes – it’s a bit like changing from soccer to badminton![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Born Melbourne 1971 \nCurrently lives and works in Melbourne \n  \nSolo Exhibitions \n2025 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2022 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2015 Fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne \n2012 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2010 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2006 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2004 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2002 Chapman & Bailey\, Melbourne \n2001 The Motor Works\, Melbourne \n2000 The Motor Works\, Melbourne \n1997 The Motor Works Melbourne[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1759371967823-8dc51d8b-b7c3″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 11 November\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Exhibition Catalogue” color=”success” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F10%2FRichard-Besley-Catalogue-2.pdf”][vc_column_text css=””]For sales inquiries\, please contact fortyfivedownstairs at gallery@fortyfivedownstairs.com or 03 9662 9966.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her love of watercolour comes from its freshness\, directness and immediacy; also from a stubborn determination to master this difficult medium. \nThe artist has spent the last 12 years living between Melbourne and rural Normandy\, which has influenced her work to a great extent. She has long been interested in questions of time and place and identity and how these issues are interwoven with the natural world and the cycle of life. \nShe prefers to examine the small rather than the big picture\, so that her works are concerned with the minutiae of the landscape – the little things that make up the whole. \nInformed by\, but not bound by the rules of botanical and scientific illustration\, she deconstructs her environment in order to better understand it. \nCarolyn has a long exhibition history and has won several awards. A first-wave Melbourne modernist\, Hester was the only major woman artist of the original Heide Circle—unapologetically bold and critically dismissed\, she worked primarily in ink\, not oils\, and left behind an extraordinary oeuvre. \nAt 27\, Emma Louise Pursey was told she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Just like Joy. Both experienced chronic illness and profound loss—Hester until her death at 40 in 1960\, Pursey to this day. Hester died. Pursey lived—and made a play. \nTwo decades in the making\, this deeply personal work blends arresting physicality with direct storytelling and multidisciplinary design to reclaim Hester’s legacy with passion\, compassion and life-affirming humour. \nFeaturing an extraordinary\, all-women creative team\, the production is endorsed by Heide MoMA\, CMAG\, Janine Burke\, and the late Mirka Mora and Barbara Blackman AO. \nThis project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants\, The Robert Salzer Foundation\, and through the Australian Cultural Fund Boost program. It was originally supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and developed with the assistance of Metro Arts. \nAdditional support has been generously provided by Heide Museum of Modern Art\, Canberra Museum and Gallery\, St Kilda Historical Society\, Wayward Woman Giving Fund\, One Star Lounge & Gallery\, The Lennox\, Anne Runhardt\, and 16th Street Actors Studio. \nClick HERE to read the program. \nPhoto by Amber Schmidt \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b9e0-6e62″][vc_column_text css=””]Actor\, Writer & Producer: Emma Louise Pursey \nDirector: Susie Dee \nComposer & Visual Content Designer: Sarah-Mary Chadwick \nLighting Designer: Amelia Lever-Davidson \nSet\, Prop & Costume Design Consultant: Lindy Macauley \nDramaturgical Support: Iain Sinclair\, Ian Brown\, Maryanne Lynch\, Julia Grace \nOriginal Creative Development Co-Writer (2004-2005): Amy Hyslop \nOriginal Creative Development Dramaturg (2005): Saffron Benner \nCo-Producer & Production Manager: Cherian Jacob Payyapali and Nidhi Isaac\, Cicero’s Circle \nStage Manager: Caitie Murphy \nTechnical Consultant: Justin Gardam \nProduction Assistant: Zadie Kennedy Mccracken[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1b9e0-6e62″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly.
