Her work draws on field recording\, verbatim theatre practice\, and personal narrative to explore attention as an artistic and dramaturgical force – attending to the non-human and the ecosystems we share with other forms of life.  \nPerformances include Memorandum (Theatre Works\, 2014) The Waiting Room (with Born In A Taxi\, 2010-2015) and Earshot (2017-2019). More recent works invite audiences into more intimate sonic encounters\, and include MicroSonic (Hobson’s Bay ‘Dear Agnes’ contemporary public art program 2026)\, and Near Sighted  (fortyfivedownstairs 2023). You learn by doing. These skills include manual dexterity in mark making\, practice in compositional language and exploration of colour theory. \nA gradual assimilation is the key to mastering these disciplines whilst holding the observed and the imagined in balance. \nThis Group exhibition represents the work of 17 artists currently working at the school. Their work represents a cross-section of themes ranging from figuration to abstraction. \nMany of these artists pursue independent careers and exhibit regularly outside the school structure. Attendance at MSS provides an opportunity to enhance their professional practice. \nThose who attend classes\, are encouraged to discover their authentic voice\, develop a body of work of exhibition standard and establish an independent studio practice away from school hours. \nDrawing and painting flourishes when there’s a willingness to explore process and medium over any predetermined outcome. \nA spirit of enquiry creates the best chance for something transformative\, something special to take place in the work. \nRichard Birmingham 2026[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Jill Anderson \nLynne Bechervaise \nJarnie Birmingham \nLyn Buckingham \nPam Cheetham \nJulie Chiffey \nPhilippa Croll \nCarsten Segerlund Frederiksen \nSusan Hase \nJoy Elizabeth Lea \nLesley Lodge \nJohn McCallum \nCarol A Palfrey \nRosemarie Reber \nSandra Smillie \nSue Sweeney \nYaping Jiang[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Purchase an Artwork” tab_id=”1780367810438-410af343-ae08″][vc_btn title=”PURCHASE AN ARTWORK FROM THE ONLINE GALLERY SHOP” color=”inverse” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fgallery-shop-3603.myshopify.com%2Fcollections%2Fmelbourne-studio-school-new-works”][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

We’ll talk through some basic compositional ‘rules’ then we’ll take you through a series of practical exercises that encourage you to explore compositional ideas for yourself – working within or without the ‘rules’.\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Subject matter\n21 June\, 10am – 1pm\nWhat do you want to paint? What do you want your work to communicate? This workshop helps you to unpack these questions\, exploring connection to your work as an artist. It could be a starting point for you\, a deep dive into existing themes that have appeared in your work\, or perhaps a change in direction. Expect self-reflection\, group discussions\, inspiration\, and practical exercises to help you build a personalised visual diary of your practice.\n\n\nWorkshop 3: Colour choices\n5 July\, 10am – 1pm\nThis session explores colour\, providing ideas and tools to give you more confidence with using colour in your work. We’ll discuss colour as a standalone presence\, colour combinations\, the art of manipulating colour through pairings\, and the use of colour in historical and current contexts. We’ll do some simple colour selection and mixing exercises to launch your own colour wheel collection\, creating a solid colour reference for your practice\, and some fresh inspiration.\n\n\nWorkshop 4: Mark-making\n19 July\, 10am – 1pm\nMark-making\, brushwork\, texture… these all work together to create depth\, energy and movement in a painting. This session gives you the chance to expand your mark-making vocabulary as we consider how the marks we make record our own experience as well as impact the viewers experience of our work.\n\n\nWorkshop 5: Strengthening your voice\n2 August\, 10am – 1pm\nThis workshop is more of an open discussion around our work and how we can strengthen our voice and the direction of our practice. Participants are required to bring in some of their own work to talk about. The session will be mostly discussion based\, with one painting exercise included.\n\n\nWorkshop 6: Building your practice\n16 August\, 10am – 1pm\nThis session will involve open discussions about the challenges of surviving as a practicing artist. We’ll give you some practical advice\, helpful templates and real life answers to all of your questions. We’ll have a mini play session creating a pop up exhibition where you’ll be encouraged to talk about your impromptu work in a relaxed and supportive environment. Whether you want to dip your toe into the world of galleries\, connect with other painters\, or break through personal roadblocks\, this session will build confidence and independence in whatever steps you choose to take next as an artist.\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Charlotte Ivey \nCharlotte Ivey is a visual artist born in Aotearoa/New Zealand where she studied Philosophy of Art at University of Canterbury. She now resides in Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. \nLargely focussed on oil painting\, Charlotte’s work is led by the impulses of the body – exploring the illusory nature of psychological states\, and how they dictate our experience of external environments. She charts a territory somewhere between the traditionally ‘beautiful’ and ‘distasteful’. \nhttps://www.charlotteivey.com/  \n  \nLana Daubermann \nLana Daubermann is a landscape and still life painter living near Melbourne’s Merri Creek. She has painted since she was a child\, slowly sidestepping her way out of a career in advertising to becoming a full-time artist. \nLana primarily works in oils and enjoys the immersive qualities of paint and its endless possibilities in mark-making. Painting en plein air and direct from life is an important part of her practice as she explores the process of painting and drawing and the unique way it can connect us to the world. With a traditional background in tonalism\, her attention over the years has shifted more towards intuition and colour. \nShe exhibits and teaches regularly\, and loves to share her passion for painting with others. \nhttps://www.lanadaubermann.com/ \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Most were created at a time when I was in dire need of orientation\, in the years after I re-located to Melbourne\, Wurundjeri land\, from my home country of the US. \nThough united by recurring motifs – of clouds\, “beacons\,” the stars and moon – I began few of these sculptures from images\, and most from the assemblage of abstract shapes and the confluence of fluid lines. Thus they are as much a product as an inner vision as an outer one\, as much in reference to old archetypes of way-finding as they are to modernist models of compositional unity. \nIn “Poetics of Space\,” Gaston Bachelard proposes “a concordance of world immensity with intimate depths of being\,” noting the work of poets whose contemplation of vast expanses becomes a meditation on the depths of themselves. That duality of the intimate and the immense is alive in this work\, with its echoes both of the moon’s reflected light and the impressions of my hands on the clay.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=”” font_family=”Arial\, Helvetica\, sans-serif”]Kate Butler is American artist\, writer and educator based in Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia\, on Wurundjeri land. But in the cut-throat Joyce Industry\, credit rarely goes to a woman. Between The Lines is a razor sharp\, wryly witty literary mystery that follows her descent into a patriarchal web of ego and academic theft. As her groundbreaking discovery is hijacked by the very mentor she trusted to protect it\, truth begins to blur. Packed with intellectual gymnastics and dramatic reversals\, the story asks: who gets to own history? A bride with a funeral to plan. A 90s love song that refuses to die. From award-winning playwright Dax Carnay-Hanrahan\, MR BIG aka Tatay\, A Transwoman and That Tiring Tune! is a darkly comedic and musically haunted new theatre work. \nSet between 1990s Manila and contemporary Melbourne\, MR BIG follows Diana\, a trans Filipina woman juggling her upcoming wedding and the funeral of her estranged father. Her plans fall apart when her late father reappears as a singing ghost who will not stop belting Mr. Big’s 1991 hit “To Be With You.” \nFusing music\, comedy\, and haunting absurdity\, the play dives into gender\, grief\, and immigrant duty\, navigating the chaos of a fractured family legacy. This heartfelt and hilarious Filipino-Australian story forces an unavoidable\, ridiculous confrontation with the ghosts of the past. \nDeveloped through the support of Midsumma Festival 2026\, the City of Melbourne Arts Grants\, and Darebin Arts through the Darebin Arts Speakeasy Spare Room program\, in association with fortyfivedownstairs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f16135-ab6c”][vc_column_text css=””]CAST in order of appearance \nDIANA/JGHOST – Dax Carnay-Hanrahan\nJOEY/DGHOST – Trevor Santos\nDION – Ken Paolo\nNOLET/ALFIE – Ayril Borce\nTESS – Anna Buenaseda\nJERRY – Aiden Gale Miranda \nCREATIVES \nDIRECTOR – Beng Oh\nWRITER – Dax Carnay-Hanrahan\nPRODUCER – Sasha Leong\nSTAGE MANAGER – Teri Steer\nASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER – Claire Le Blond\nDRAMATURG – Matthew Bostock\nMUSICAL DIRECTOR & SOUND DESIGNER – Ben Keene\nLIGHTING DESIGNER – Viv Hargreaves\nSET & COSTUME DESIGNER – Christina Logan-Bell\nVISUAL STORYTELLING – Jordan Hanrahan-Carnay[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f16135-ab6c”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $42\nFull: $55\nConcession: $45\nGroup 6+: $45\nMob tickets (discount for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island mob): $42 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. It is not the individual feather\, but the crystalline structure of them grouped together that shines such radiance. \nWe are creating a bower; collecting little things we like to show off\, comforts\, reflections\, traces of Country. And this can become a shelter from which we all fledge.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Participating Artists” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Grace Auld \nNicholas Currie \nENOKi \nlalatuai \nAri Mills \nElijah Money \nMia Nugent \nE Salmon \nPierra Van Sparkes \nTré Turner[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]
