It draws from the familiar rituals that shape the season; time spent in gardens surrounded by native plants\, diving into open water\, fishing for the evening meal\, sharing drinks in the sun\, and driving up the coast with friends as the landscape rolls by. \nThe collection is less about documenting these activities and more about capturing their atmosphere and how they make us feel. It considers the weight of heat in the air\, the way long days seem to stretch endlessly\, and how light settles over everything with a kind of softness and intensity at once. These repeated experiences form a quiet rhythm\, one that feels instinctive and deeply personal. \nAt its core\, Summer’s Rhythm explores how these seasonal moments become part of who we are. The warmth of summer is not only physical but emotional; it slows us down\, draws us together\, and allows us to notice the beauty in what might otherwise feel ordinary. Through a focus on light\, texture\, and mood\, the collection invites viewers to reconnect with the subtle richness of an Australian summer and the sense of comfort and belonging it creates. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Adele Auchterlonie is a Tasmanian abstract expressionist artist and has been painting for six years. She creates bold\, vibrant works designed to bring energy into a space and evoke a strong emotional response. \nHer inspiration comes from everyday life and the beauty found in ordinary moments. Summer\, the ocean and the garden are constant influences. She grew up sailing\, and the rhythm and movement of the water continue to shape the way she paints. She is also inspired by long summer days\, warm light and time spent outdoors\, where heat softens everything and slows the pace of life. \nWorking primarily with mixed media on canvas\, Adele is drawn to expressive brushstrokes\, layered textures and intuitive mark making. Colour plays a central role in her practice and she uses it instinctively to capture movement and feeling. \nThrough her work\, she aims to capture the atmosphere of these familiar experiences and translate them into something expressive\, immersive and deeply felt.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Works may entertain\, surprise\, or unsettle\, using laughter to expose contradictions\, challenge authority\, critique politics or culture\, or simply revel in the joy of making something funny. \nThis exhibition is timed to coincide with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival\, which is taking over the theatre at fortyfivedownstairs. For a few weeks\, the building will be filled with artists and comedians alike\, both attempting to perfect the art of the punchline. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Participating artists” tab_id=”1772506001343-8f4aff4d-3e9e”][vc_column_text css=””]Alana Davis\, Al Roberts\, Alex Saveski\, Alice Gilbert\, Amanda Tonkin-Hill\, Anna Yao Mei Wang\, Benjamin Shaw\, Cameron Grant\, Cameron McGregor\, Catriona Fraser\, Charlotte Finley\, Cristina Perra\, Daisi Diddle\, Darren Frisina\, Emma Buckland\, Esme Stripp\, Falconeris Marimón\, Freya Cronin\, Gala Jane\, Hiro Feliciano\, Jean-Luc Syndikas\, Jennifer Burns\, Jincheng Deng\, Jon Potter\, Jooyun Lim\, Josh Dykgraaf\, Julian Di Martino\, Kristian V. Then\, after a decade away\, she returns to Africa and brings back a suitcase full of hilarious\, unforgettable stories. No filters\, no small talk – just big laughs. \nBuy tickets \n\nChris Parker\nTake a Good Hard Look at Me \nHello! I’ve been vying for your attention for a long time now. I’d comfortably say\, it’s been 30 years. Thirty years of trying to make people look at me. In that time there have been many attempts to try and masquerade it as something “important” or “educational” but the longer I’ve sat with it\, the more I’ve come to accept that it could maybe just be vanity. So I won’t sugar coat it in the blurb. There’re no secrets about to be dished\, no valuable lesson to take away. I’m just a 35-year-old gay man\, who was told there was something special about him as a kid and has been grappling with that ever since\, standing in front of an audience asking them to take a good hard look at ME! \nBuy tickets \n\nJKS: a Comedy(?)\nBy Tom Ballard \nThe sell-out Melbourne Fringe hit returns for six shows only! \nA weekly stand-up gig. Backstage. \nIn between their sets\, five comedians are laughing\, bitching and talking shit. \nIt’s all fun and games… until they hear the news: a legend has died. \nDepending on who you ask\, he either leaves behind a lifetime of laughter\, or a legacy of bigotry and pain. Or maybe both. Or neither… \nThe comics get stuck in: was this guy actually funny\, or just embarrassing? Is being “funny” all that matters\, anyway? What’s even the point of telling jokes? How much harm (or good) can they ever do? How dark and f#%ked up can you go? Who can say what – and who decides? \nAs the gig carries on in the background\, the comics go to war on ‘The Big Question’ – what is comedy even for? \nA new (funny) play about what it means to be funny. \nStarring Bev Killick (Deadloch)\, Kevin Hofbauer (Dear Life)\, Tom Ballard (Tonightly)\, Tiana Hogben (Thank God You’re Here) and Lauren Bonner (Going Under). \nWritten by Tom Ballard. \nDirected by Ben Russell (Thank God You’re Here). \nBuy tickets \n\nTape Face\n20 \nCelebrating 20 years of TAPE FACE – the show returns to Australia for the first time in over 10 years! \nMime with noise\, stand-up with no talking\, drama with no acting. Las Vegas headliner TAPE FACE has become a global sensation. See the critically award-winning show that started it all. Physical comedy and silent stand-up collide in an unforgettable performance that will leave you laughing\, gasping and lost for words. Each work is inspired by a memory of a specific place and being absorbed in the natural surroundings. This has been a continuing theme in Laura’s work in recent years\, and it also speaks to a broader need to seek our own forms of stillness\, whether in nature or elsewhere. \nThe title of the exhibition ‘sea like a mirror’\, is a phrase drawn from the Beaufort wind force scale\, a system developed to determine wind force through observations of the surrounding environment. But while this phrase is reflective of calm conditions and stillness\, if ‘sea like a mirror’ is read a different way\, it could be about seeing in the environment a reflection of ourselves. \nThe artworks in the exhibition are all created with watercolour on paper\, either as paintings\, collages\, sculptures or installations and using processes of painting\, layering\, attaching\, folding\, sewing\, or suspending. While watercolour paint dries quickly\, the other processes are all usually slow and become a meditative practice in themselves. \nThis project has been supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Laura Williams is an artist from the south-west of Western Australia\, now based in Melbourne. Having met years ago as students at the Victorian Artists Society\, the two have since returned to the same halls to teach together\, all while maintaining an ongoing dialogue about the craft of painting. \nWhile their focuses have diverged – Fiona into the intimate world of portraiture and still life\, and Lana into the expansive reach of the landscape – their work continues to speak a similar language. \nIn this exhibition\, the paintings are in conversation with one another. There is a subtle reciprocity on the canvas: a shared tonal palette here\, a familiar energy in the brushwork there. Each nods to one another’s strengths\, reflecting a mutual influence built over years of discussing the craft of painting and supporting each other’s creative journey. \nFiona’s work remains a meditation on domestic realism\, finding poignancy in the “here and now” through commonplace objects and familiar faces. Lana’s landscapes explore colour and atmosphere\, capturing the spirit of the natural world. Together\, Gathered is a harmony of two distinct paths that continue to run side-by-side.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1774573140808-e46cf210-0abb”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night\nTuesday 21 April\, 5 – 7pm \nArtist Talk with Lana Daubermann and Fiona O’Byrne\nFriday 1 May\, 6 – 6:45pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”PURCHASE AN ARTWORK” color=”black” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” button_block=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fgallery-shop-3603.myshopify.com%2Fcollections%2Fgathered”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Liszt’s monumental Après une lecture du Dante features amongst a sequence of works exploring Dante’s most compelling figures\, including the tragic Francesca da Rimini. At the heart of the concert is the world-premiere of Gordon Kerry’s major song cycle Dante and Beatrice\, performed by soprano Rachel Joyce\, mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd\, tenor Boyd Owen\, and baritone Christopher Hillier. Drawing on Sir Samuel Griffith’s English translation (OUP\, 1911)\, with story adaptation by Margot Costanzo and libretto by Costanzo and Kerry\, the cycle charts Dante’s spiritual passage toward Beatrice. Music by Granados and new commissions\, including Gulliver Poole’s Paper Love\, create an unmissable Dantean tableau. \nbuy tickets \n\nBeethoven 9th Symphony arranged by Franz Liszt\nThursday 23 April\, 7:30pm \nLegendary Australian pianist Michael Leslie returns from Germany to join Melbourne virtuoso Peter de Jager for a monumental musical event: Franz Liszt’s epic two-piano arrangement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. A towering feat of pianistic imagination\, Liszt’s arrangement is a complete re-creation of Beethoven’s orchestral\, choral\, and solo forces through the hands of just two performers. In this dazzlingly difficult tour de force\, two pianists at two pianos conjure the full sonic architecture of the symphony\, from its elemental opening to the transcendence of the “Ode to Joy.” Liszt\, himself the greatest piano virtuoso of the nineteenth century\, created these symphonic transcriptions to bring the orchestral canon to wider audiences before the age of recording. Today\, the Ninth Symphony arrangement remains one of the rarest and most formidable works in the entire piano duet repertoire\, seldom performed\, and even more rarely attempted live in concert. \nbuy tickets \n\nMy Favourite Penis Poems (and Other Love Stories)\nFriday 24 April\, 7:30pm \nPulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici was one of the first major classical composers to fully embrace queerness in a radical act of joy\, eroticism\, and defiance. This concert highlights two sides of Del Tredici’s queer expression. There’s the outrageously camp My Favourite Penis Poems – a virtuosic\, hilarious\, and unabashed song cycle setting his favourite poems on the rise and fall of His Majesty\, the Penis – and the deeply moving Gay Life – a meditative and tender exploration of queer identity\, composed in 2001. Both works receive their Australian premieres\, performed by a sensational ensemble of musicians including acclaimed American pianist and Del Tredici’s longtime friend\, Marc Peloquin\, baritone Bailey Montgomerie\, tenor Boyd Owen\, and soprano Marjorie Hannah. \nbuy tickets \n\nFrom Verona to Manhattan: Romeo and Juliet in Music\nSaturday 25 April\, 7:30pm \nOpening with Bellini’s rarely heard overture on the warring Montagues and Capulets\, this celebration of Shakespeare’s timeless love story continues with Linda Kouvaras’ The Nurse’s Curse from She Who Should Have Been a Queen\, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story for two pianos\, the Australian premiere of Tchaikovsky’s epic Romeo and Juliet Overture arranged for two pianos by Karl Klindworth\, and Ned Rorem’s Four Dialogues\, a witty and lyrical set for two voices and two pianos. Performers include pianists Coady Green and Marc Peloquin and soprano Elena Xanthoudakis. \nbuy tickets \n\nThe Melbourne Mozart Project \nSunday 26 April and Sunday 3 May \nClick HERE for more information on this exciting series of events. \n\nBrahms\, Liszt & Mendelssohn: Hungarian Fire and Italian Light\nTuesday 28 April\, 7:30pm \nPerformers Josephine Vains (cello)\, Sofija Kirsanova (violin)\, Coady Green (piano)\, and Ricardo Roche Idini (piano) combine forces in this expansive celebration of Romantic colour\, vitality\, and collective virtuosity. The program begins with the complete set of 21 Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms. Arranged for piano four hands\, violin and cello\, and overflowing with melodic buoyancy\, rhythmic bite and emotional depth\, these dances remain among Brahms’s most captivating works. This is followed by Franz Liszt’s blazingly virtuosic Hungarian Rhapsody\, also arranged for piano four hands with strings\, and an arrangement of Felix Mendelssohn’s exuberant Symphony No. 4\, the Italian\, whose sunlit energy and lyrical sweep bring the concert to a jubilant close. \nbuy tickets \n\nMeta Cohen and Olivier Messiaen: Prophecy and Eternity\nThursday 30 April\, 7:30pm \nA rare opportunity to encounter one of the twentieth century’s great visionary masterworks: Olivier Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen\, performed by Coady Green and Marc Peloquin on two pianos. Composed during the Second World War\, this vast\, mystical meditation moves from creation and love to judgment and eternity\, revealing Messiaen as theologian\, mystic\, and ecstatic colourist. The program opens with Delphi Songs by Meta Cohen\, performed by Jessica Aszodi and Coady Green\, a haunting cycle inspired by prophecy and the final Oracle of Delphi\, whose voice foretold the end of her own sacred order. Also featured is Cohen’s brand new piano suite The Warning Never Heard\, based on the myth of Cassandra. Spanning millennia\, Cohen’s work contemplates revelation\, authority\, and the fading boundary between divine utterance and human mortality. \nbuy tickets \n\nThe Crossing Machine performs The Juliet Letters by Elvis Costello and The Brodsky Quartet\nFriday 1 May\, 7:30pm   \nMelbourne string quartet The Crossing Machine (violinists Marianne Rothschild and Matthew Rigby\, violist Margaret Butcher and cellist Charlotte Jacke) will be joined by vocalist Jordan Z to perform The Juliet Letters\, the genre-defying song cycle created by Elvis Costello in collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet. Originally released in 1993\, The Juliet Letters is a sequence of letters written to Shakespeare’s Juliet\, revealing a gallery of fractured lives\, longing\, regret\, and dark wit. Since beginning this project in 2018\, The Crossing Machine has been breathing new life into the work\, approaching it with deep respect for the score while bringing a distinctly contemporary energy and emotional clarity. The quartet is currently in the final stages of an exciting new CD release and this performance forms part of a small number of anticipated launch concerts planned for 2026. \nbuy tickets \n\nTriptych of Shadows: Satie\, Ullmann\, Kouvaras\nSaturday 2 May\, 7:30pm\n \nMeditations on love\, death\, memory\, and what remains \nErik Satie’s luminous Socrate\, performed by soprano Lily Flynn and pianist Coady Green\, offers a serene\, translucent meditation on the philosopher’s final hours\, a work the composer called a “symphony in white.” Viktor Ullmann’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke\, with actor Paul English and Green\, transforms Rilke’s prose poem into a hallucinatory wartime monodrama composed in Theresienstadt before Ullmann’s death in Auschwitz. The program concludes with a world-premiere preview of Linda Kouvaras’s The Boarding House\, Carlton\, 1972: Those that Remain\, narrated by Tiriki Onus and featuring baritone Alex Owens\, with text by Richard Ward\, a searing reimagining of memory\, violence\, and 1970s Melbourne. \nBuy tickets  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Melbourne Mozart Project” tab_id=”1770769982191-adcb46ea-dc4c”][vc_column_text css=””]The Melbourne Mozart Project Part I: Four Concerts of Mozart Piano Concertos in One Day\nSunday 26 April \nA festival within a festival\, The Melbourne Mozart Project celebrates Mozart through two parallel musical journeys. From the beginning\, the vision was to create an intensive two-week program where audiences could experience both beloved masterworks and bold new music side by side\, and where diversity of voices\, styles\, and perspectives is genuinely at the centre of the programming. \nWhat do you love about performing at fortyfivedownstairs? \nI first performed at fortyfivedownstairs in 2008\, when I was living in London and returning to Australia every year or two. I loved it immediately\, for both its resonance and captivating atmosphere. It is an unexpected “loft-style” performance space of the kind that you find in New York and Berlin. I also know so many colleagues – actors\, visual artists\, sound designers and musicians – who share this love\, so it has a community spirit as well. \nFor a patron who hasn’t attended a Chamber Music Festival event\, what would you recommend as an introduction?  \nTry opening night – Helen Morse reciting excerpts from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights’ Dream\, accompanied by Mendelssohn’s beautiful (and virtuosic) incidental music… Or come along to a night inspired by Romeo and Juliet\, with visiting American virtuoso Marc Peloquin\, featuring works from Tchaikovsky to Bernstein… Or a vivid night with the complete Brahms Hungarian Dances\, arranged for piano four hands\, violin and cello\, paired with Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony. Or the world-premiere of Gordon Kerry’s new song cycle Dante and Beatrice in a concert of works inspired by Dante… Or the complete works by Mozart for piano four hands and two pianos in two concerts on Sunday May 3rd – something you’ll likely never experience again in this way. There’s also the monumental Liszt arrangement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony for two pianos\, a piece so rarely performed\, with visiting guest artists Michael Leslie and Peter de Jager. \nAnother monumental work for two pianos that many people love but is rarely played is Messiaen’s exquisite Visions de l’Amen\, which I will be playing with guest Marc Peloquin. This is an enormous work\, and really very special. We are pairing it with Meta Cohen’s evocative song cycle on the statements of the oracle at Delphi – Delphi Songs.  \nAnd what would you suggest to the patron who sees numerous live music performances who is looking for something new and surprising?   \nThe late\, Pulitzer-Prize-Winning American composer David Del Tredici features in the festival\, with two Australian premieres – his profoundly moving song-cycle for baritone and piano\, Gay Life\, and the outrageous My Favourite Penis Poems. Need I say more? \nFor regular patrons\, I wouldn’t miss the Messiaen Visions de l’Amen\, which is such a great\, epic work. Another wonderful surprise is the complete Elvis Costello Juliet Letters\, performed by the Melbourne string quartet The Crossing Machine\, with guest vocalist Jordan Z. \nAlso in the new and surprising category – a performance of a new song cycle for baritone\, piano and narrator by Linda Kouvaras\, with narration about local (and very surprising) stories from Carlton… this is paired with a rare performance of Satie’s beautiful Socrate\, taking text from Plato\, and Viktor Ullman’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke\, with actor Paul English\, which transforms Rilke’s prose poem into a hallucinatory wartime monodrama composed in Theresienstadt before Ullmann’s death in Auschwitz.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]
