Their bond is fragile — some close\, others linked more by memory than friendship. When one of their own announces his transition\, the circle begins to fracture. Loyalties splinter\, old wounds reopen\, and the meaning of identity and belonging is fiercely contested. \nFunny\, sharp\, and deeply human\, The Placeholder explores how feminism\, friendship\, and chosen family collide — and how love is tested when those closest to us change in ways we never expected. \nDirected by Kitan Petkovski (The Inheritance) and performed by an extraordinary ensemble\, The Placeholder is a fearless and emotionally charged work about the radical act of living truthfully in a world that resists change. \nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria\, and has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia\, its principal arts investment and advisory body.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ec55-c59a”][vc_column_text css=””]Writer: Ben MacEllen \nDirector: Kitan Petkovski \nCast: Oliver Ayres\, Meredith Rogers\, Brigid Gallacher\, Rebecca Bower\, Michelle Perera\, and Alessandra Merlo \nProducer: 5 Foot Entertainment | Chelsey Weisz \nSet and Costume Designer: Bethany J Fellows \nLighting Designer: Tim Bonser \nSound Designer: Ian Moorhead \nStage Manager: Charlotte Fischer \nDramaturgy Consultant: Kate Mulvany \nDirecting Intern: Grace McLaughlin \nHero image: Meagan Harding \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1ec55-c59a”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $45\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39\nEARLYBIRD: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. These are rehearsed readings\, with a changing ensemble. The Highly Strung Players began appearing at fortyfivedownstairs in 2017. \nThe Innominable – a new play to be performed by Georgina Banks and Ellie Nielsen – introduces us to twin sisters in their fifties. They are waiting to collect their mother’s ashes. One of them (Glen-Rae) was named at birth. The other – known as the Innominable – was never named. Now she wants to know why. \nThe Siegfried Idyll – a duologue to be performed by Peter Rose and Claudio Bozzi – presents a seemingly contented gay couple contemplating the seismic repercussions of ‘a night at the opera’. Conrad is a capricious restaurateur\, Toby a long-suffering arborist. The Siegfried Idyll had one performance at fortyfivedownstairs in December 2024. \n“The Highly Strung Players’ original absurdist works are playful\, witty and multi-layered. Renowned wordsmith Peter Rose has a fine sense of what lies beneath the surface of relationships and social interaction. His clever duologues highlight our foibles and delusions with sensitivity and humour.” Helen Morse[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1a37e-8afc”][vc_column_text css=””]Georgina Banks – a writer\, facilitator\, and performer – was a professional actor in her twenties\, studying acting in New York and then working in theatre and television for over a decade (including Sydney Theatre Company\, Playbox\, Theatre South\, A Country Practice\, and Outback). In 2023\, she published her first book\, Back to Bangka. She began appearing with the Highly Strung Players in 2025. \nClaudio Bozzi has made two appearances with the Highly Strung Players: All Those Sunsets (2023) and The Siegfried Idyll (2024). A barrister and legal academic\, he is currently writing a book on the legalities of the Ukraine War. He prefers to spend the southern winter harvesting hay on his farm in Italy. \nEllie Nielsen holds a degree from VCA drama school and a Master of Creative Writing from RMIT University. As a Naarm (Melbourne)-based actor\, writer and dramaturg\, her work focuses on new and independent theatre. She is the author of the internationally published memoir\, Buying a Piece of Paris\, and has performed with the Highly Strung Players since 2023. \nPeter Rose is a poet\, novelist and memoirist. Attention\, Please! (2025) is his seventh book of poetry. Rose Boys\, a family memoir\, won the 2003 National Biography Award. He founded the Highly Strung Players in 1989 and revived it in 2017. His plays include the five-part The Ones. Memory is never fixed; it is an unstable interplay between what is vividly recalled\, what is unconsciously fabricated\, and what slips quietly beyond reach. This tension lies at the core of my drawing practice. \nMy work emerges from the subconscious\, where memories do not announce themselves as linear narratives but surface instead through instinctive gestures. I rely on automatic drawing as a process of excavation\, allowing the hand to reveal traces of past experiences that the mind may only partially recognise. Each artwork becomes both an act of remembering and an acknowledgement of forgetting\, an attempt to map moments that are simultaneously clear and elusive. \nVivid memories manifest through dense colour\, intensity and texture. Strong\, determined shapes assert themselves confidently across the page\, reflecting recollections that remain intact and emotionally charged. In contrast\, fragmented or overlapping forms point to memories that are blurred\, conflicted or indecisive – echoes that feel present yet unresolved. \nI am especially drawn to false memories\, those subtle inventions of the subconscious that fill narrative voids. Ambiguity permeates my work as familiar forms are reimagined into shapes that feel both recognisable and alien. \nLost memories appear in areas left intentionally incomplete\, faded or erased. These quiet voids evoke haziness or absence\, suggesting the inevitable gaps that time creates. Sharp\, defined imagery surrounded by soft\, floating shapes represent memories that have endured while the surrounding context has dissolved. \nThe yupo paper itself becomes part of this narrative. Its unique surface retains traces of earlier marks\, allowing ghosts of previous layers to remain visible – much like the faint residues of forgotten experiences. \nUltimately\, memory is not a reliable archive but a creative\, continually revised act of the mind. Through my drawings\, I invite viewers to reflect on their own shifting recollections and consider how easily truth and fiction intertwine within the landscape of memory. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Education\n1989- Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Printmaking\, Monash University\, Caulfield \nSolo Exhibitions\n2022- Fortyfive Downstairs Gallery\, Melbourne\n2019- Acufitz\, Melbourne\n2018- Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Melbourne \nGroup Exhibitions\n2019- Emerge\, Brunswick Street Gallery\, Melbourne\n2018- Finalist in Life Abstracted\, Cambridge Studio Gallery\, Melbourne\n2008- Alafia Gallery\, Melbourne\nGasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n2007- Gasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n2006- Gasworks Arts Park\, Melbourne\n1990- Linden Gallery\, Melbourne\n1989- Caulfield Arts Complex\, Melbourne \nWebsite: alisonrussellart.com\nInstagram: @alisonrussellart[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1768272895838-ae13829c-8ea8″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 3 February\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The exhibition will run from 24 March – 18 April 2026. \nWe’re looking for artworks that make us smirk\, snigger\, snort\, chuckle\, giggle\, lol\, crack up\, guffaw\, gasp for air\, pee our pants – or even literally die laughing. \nThis visual humour may take many forms\, including (but not limited to): satire and social critique\, wordplay and visual puns\, absurdity\, surrealism\, dark humour\, pop art\, playful disruption\, appropriation\, or just plain silliness. Works may entertain\, surprise\, or unsettle\, using laughter to expose contradictions\, challenge authority\, critique politics or culture\, or simply revel in the joy of making something funny. \nSubmissions are welcome across all mediums\, stylistic approaches\, and subject matter\, including painting\, photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, installation\, digital media\, and experimental practices. \nPlease note: \n\nCapacity for large 3D works and installations is limited.\nSmaller 3D works must be wall-hung or presented on a shelf (artists must supply their own display supports).\n\nPunchlines offers a great opportunity to show new work\, engage with collectors\, promote your practice\, or experiment within a professional gallery setting. The collection spans front-facing facades\, through stage doors\, and backstage\, featuring theatres from around the country and revealing the physical spaces that shape their cultural identity. Each work honours the character of these venues\, and the emotional history they hold for performers\, patrons\, and the community. \nAs a performer myself – having graduated as an actor at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2018 – there is a deep nostalgia when revisiting an old theatre. I’ve listened to countless stories from colleagues detailing the “second homes” they’ve formed in dressing rooms\, kitchenettes\, and pitch-black sidestage wings. This series serves as a way to commemorate those stories and preserve their memories. \nIn a post-COVID industry [especially in Melbourne] the significance of live theatre has deepened significantly. Spaces once taken for granted now carry deeper meaning\, both as cultural landmarks and as vessels for shared experiences. I seek to honour that significance by presenting theatres in a new light that elevates the beauty\, history\, and stories embedded in these buildings\, merging the boundaries of digital photography with fine-art presentation in a way that reflects and celebrates Australian theatre culture. \nMy first exhibition\, held at my Brunswick East studio in July 2024\, received recognition from industry leaders and marked the beginning of a broader mission: to create a visual archive of Australia’s theatre landscape. I hope to see the works proudly feature on peoples living room walls; hanging next to cherished posters and ticket stubs\, and the rooms of hotels that house touring artists so regularly. Australian Theatres Unveiled stands as an ongoing commitment to preserving and celebrating the venues that have shaped generations of performers and audiences across the country.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Cameron Grant is a Melbourne-based live performance photographer and Director of Parenthesy [a digital media production house]\, specialising in theatre\, musical theatre\, live music\, dance\, and circus. His work captures the emotion\, craft\, and energy of live performance\, helping preserve and elevate Australia’s vibrant performing arts community. \nDriven by a passion for storytelling and authenticity\, Cameron has quickly become one of Melbourne’s leading performance photographers. His images have appeared in international and local publications including Rolling Stone Magazine\, Deadline\, Disney Official\, and as a regular appearance in local news sites like The Guardian\, and Aussie Theatre. He has worked with major organisations such as Arts Centre Melbourne\, Michael Cassel Group\, GWB Entertainment\, and Crossroads Live\, providing photographic services across Australia and internationally on productions including recently seen Beetlejuice\, Miss Saigon\, The Talented Mr Ripley\, Anastasia\, and Disney’s The Lion King. \nIn 2024\, Cameron developed and presented the first instalment of “Australian Theatres Unveiled”\, a photographic series celebrating the architecture and heritage of Australia’s major theatre venues. The first instalment was exhibited at his Brunswick East studio\, drawing national industry leaders and strong public interest. The series continues to expand and the full collection will open at FortyFive Downstairs in February 2026\, showcasing theatre architecture as both cultural heritage and fine art. \nCameron continues to collaborate closely with artists and organisations to document their creative work with professionalism and care. Through Parenthesy\, he aims to strengthen and support Australia’s live performance sector in a post-COVID world\, producing high-quality imagery that celebrates\, sustains\, and shares the stories of the performing arts with honesty and impact. \n  \nExhibitions: \n2026: Solo exhibition – Australian Theatres Unveiled \n2024: Solo exhibition – Australian Theatres Unveiled \n2024: Group exhibition – Hillvale Photo Trophy \n  \nWebsite: parenthesyprints.com.au \nInstagram @parenthesyprints[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1765437706313-2a9132e3-7b08″][vc_column_text css=””]February 5th – February 14th \nVenue capacities are flexible\, however ticket distribution helps manage numbers. Her process also involves contemporary media in order to reduce the size of the drawings.  Once completed\, each hand-drawn image is scanned and printed at half its size\, because this smallness further enhances its intense and detailed nature. \nA memory from the past acted as an initial impetus for theses drawings. Celia remembers her experience of learning to write by hand when she was a young schoolgirl. Her teacher would trace letters of the alphabet in the air\, explaining how to draw each individual shape. \nAn example of the influence of this early experience is ‘Vibrant Promise’\, (2024)\, with its curving sweeping lines\, which refer to the dynamic shape of the letter ‘S’\, and generates a sense of momentum and vibrancy as lines unfurl across the space. The drawing\, ‘Turn Under’\, (2024)\, references the shape of the letter ‘O’\, with hair-like lines spinning around a central circular space and crossing each other repeatedly. The lines are turning and sweeping\, under and over each other. Coloured lines\, turquoise and pink\, mingle and weave with overlapping flourishes. \nA sequence of new drawings followed when the artist’s connection to her early experience of alphabetical forms dropped away and\, instead\, she drew abstract images by hand\, using pen and ink as before. \n‘Inventive Impetus’\, (2025)\, is a cluster of dynamic\, sweeping lines forming diagonal.  It is an exploration of intense and intimate spaces. ‘Layered Endeavour\, (2025)\, is an example of the artist’s preoccupation with circular shapes\, where most of the lines are laid down independently\, gradually\, and building\, layer upon layer\, a construction that is mobile\, intense and detailed. \nIn her role as an artist for Note Printing Australia\, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank\, and producer of polymer banknotes for Australia and internationally\, Celia Bridle attended training in Switzerland. She was taught by a resident engraver in the skills of his profession and was shown how to interpret the engraving method in order to draw in the style of an engraver. The engraver worked under magnification\, (using a microscope)\, cutting fine lines into a metal surface. Once completed his engraving was ready for printing on the surface of a banknote. \nCelia Bridle’s artwork continues to be inspired by an assiduous approach to line and engraving’s measured configuration and intense immersion.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Celia Bridle lived in tropical Africa\, attending school and working there as a trainee teacher before leaving home and family to attend Art College in the UK. Four years later she graduated with a degree in Fine Art\, (Drawing and Painting). \nCelia worked as a high school art teacher for two years\, then as an artist in book publishing\, commissioned for an extensive range of subjects — botanical\, medical and scientific imagery. Her artwork was published in the UK and exhibited in Munich and London. \nWishing to see the world\, Celia went to Papua New Guinea with her partner\, continuing to draw for publication. Moving to Melbourne in 1985 she was commissioned by publishers\, then offered the position of illustrator in the Faculty of Archaeology\, La Trobe University. \nIn order to update her computer skills and build a better understanding of the potential of electronic media\, Celia studied part-time at the Dept of Creative Media\, RMIT\, graduating in 1999 with an Advanced Diploma of Art (Electronic Design and Interactive Media) \nHer role as an artist with Note Printing Australia spanned 2001-2004 which included training in Switzerland in the engraving style of drawing. In 2005 Celia was accepted to study drawing at The Slade School of Fine Art\, Summer School\, University College\, London\, and In 2007 she gained a Master of Fine Art at R MIT Melbourne. In 2005 she moved into a workspace in the city\, and was there\, in The Nicholas Building\, Flinders Lane\, until 2023\, when she relocated to Eltham\, Melbourne\, where she has a November 2025 workspace.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1769673422062-c4d392d7-4998″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 17 February\, 5pm – 7pm \n  \nFree Workshop \nSaturday 28 February\, 1pm – 2pm \nCelia Bridle will lead a guided pen and ink drawing session inspired by her latest exhibition[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Combining fine art photography\, couture garments\, sound\, and spatial design\, the exhibition explores memory as something lived\, embodied\, and continually shaping the present. \nExtending beyond the frame\, the installation transforms still images into sculptural garments. Davison’s photographs are printed onto fabric\, deconstructed\, and reassembled into couture gowns — allowing memory to move\, fold\, and breathe. The result is a layered experience that dissolves the boundaries between image\, body\, and lived experience. \nSet within a dreamlike garden environment\, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how memory is formed\, distorted\, preserved\, and worn. Sensory cues — water\, birdsong\, floral forms\, and sound — guide audiences through a contemplative space where perception slows and attention deepens. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Pam is an artist who has achieved recognition and awards for her photography\, short stories\, playwriting and poetry. Since 2009\, she has concentrated primarily on photography. Her art has evolved through a series of major exhibitions into a practice that explores the creation and curation of memories (often involving the natural world) through a combination of photography\, prose\, and fashion.
