Elegies takes us on a musical journey that explores the modern world that we live in and life’s infinite joys. \nThis production features four celebrated performers – Nadine Garner (The Blake Mysteries)\, Kerrie Anne Greenland (Miss Saigon)\, Marty Alix (Hamilton)\, Anton Berezin (The Phantom of the Opera)\, and Glenn Hill (Matilda) – who take on a variety of roles across an 80-minute journey of constant transformation. In each character\, we respond to echoes of those closest to us\, our family\, and our friends\, as well as the family we choose. \nThe debut production of Clovelly Fox Productions and acclaimed director Tyran Parke promises to be something special.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1baf6-d1a7″][vc_column_text css=””]Cast: Nadine Garner\, Kerrie Anne Greenland\, Marty Alix\, Anton Berezin\, and Glenn Hill \nDirector: Tyran Parke \nMusical Director: Vicky Jacobs \nChoreographer: Freya List \nProducer: Pella Gregory \nProduction Manager: Jasmine Doak \nStage Manager: Lexi Jaensch \nSet/Costumes Designer: Miki Looker \nLighting Designer: Tom Vulcan \nSound Designer: Jack Scandrett \nProjection Design: Martyn Coutts \nProjection Design assistant: Lara Gabo[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1baf6-d1a7″][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $55\nFull: $69\nConcession: $55\nGroup 8+: $55 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

But architecture also occupies time. In this instance\, not old or new\, or the clock-time so conveniently measured by our phones\, but by the liminal space of collective memory and potential futures. This ensures the pursuit of ‘newness’ in architecture is as dangerous as Homer’s attraction to the alluring song of the Sirens. \nSo\, how do you make something Brand New? \nThe exhibition explores this proposition through a series of six NH projects\, recently completed and in mid-flight. Most notably the redevelopment of the Queen Victoria Market and Arts Centre Melbourne. Both endeavours engage the challenges of respecting Naarm’s ecologies\, geographies and multiple histories whilst foregrounding each project’s onward journey. \nArchitecture is a slow art form with long gestation periods followed by the chaotic act of designing and making. When created at the scale of public and city architecture\, it involves respect for Country\, an array of collaborators\, a network of disciplines and the demands of multiple decision-makers. \nThe exhibition reveals how the NH Studio has developed a working method using tactics\, strategy and tools to deal with large-scale legacy projects. Where ideas are located between formative concept drawings and the rebounding pragmatics inherent in a project’s construction. In this nonlinear process\, knowledge can be generated simultaneously at different junctions of a problem. Design can therefore equally occur within the pragmatics of a construction program as in the theoretical realm of applied research. \nTo quote the title of a recent exhibition by American artist Cy Twombly\, it is the process of ‘Making Past Present’. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]NH Architecture is a leading Australian group of architects and designers working in a collaborative\, open forum. This grew to a focused visual interest and wonder in all trees. \nInitial black and white drawings evolved to include colour\, folding and embossing of the paper\, emphasising the flow and movement of foliage and branches and giving a sense of dimension and depth. These elements and interests are influenced and continuing from my theatre and dance design practice with the added importance of lighting to give shadow and dimension. \nAll the drawings are based on and inspired by real trees\, though I am mostly drawn to those with a particular and unusual character\, spirit and shape or strong individual patterning of bark and trunks. \nAll the trees were discovered and observed on walks around Melbourne including the gardens behind the NGV\, the Botanic Gardens\, Royal Park and many local walks during COVID lockdowns. Later more distant walks included Sherbrooke Forest and East Warburton where I rekindled my love and fascination with tree ferns. \nI prefer having sections of the original unmarked paper showing in the drawings and although the later drawings fill the entire sheet of paper with pastel markings there is always some rubbing back revealing the original paper and light surface below. \nImages: Arboreal series\, Michael Pearce\, 2023\, pastel on Velin Arches 300gsm paper[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Michael Pearce is a visual artist \,theatre set and costume designer and occasional performer\, designing for dance and drama companies in Australia New Zealand\, Asia and Europe. His pastel and charcoal drawings have been exhibited throughout Australia\, Hong Kong and Hanoi. \nHis previous four exhibitions at fortyfivedownstairs began with Fluid in 2011 which was influenced by his two Asialink residencies and many cross cultural design and dance collaborations in Hanoi\, Vietnam. His large Vietnam inspired drawing installation Flow was exhibited at at the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick in 2000 and then Hanoi in 2002. \nUnwrapped Hong Kong exhibited at fortyfivedownstairs in 2013 was developed from twice being Artist in Residence teaching at The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and exhibiting in HK. Michael has also been a guest teacher at WAAPA and The Victorian College of the Arts. \nMichael’s previous exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs Unfolding in 2019\, introduced his interest in folding and embossing the drawings which developed from his stage design practice making set design models. \nHe has designed for many theatre and dance companies from Dance North in Townsville to the Netherlands Dance Theatre and is the recipient of three Victorian Green Room Awards for Best Dance Design – all designs for The Australian Ballet. \nThis is Michael’s first exhibition focused entirely on drawing trees though his last stage designs\, for Stephen Baynes Night Path for the Australian Ballet and Douglas Wright’s The Kiss Inside in Auckland\, both featured large sculptural tree elements. \nwww.michaelpearcemelbourne.com\nInstagram michaelpearcemelbourne \nEDUCATION\nDiploma in Art (Teaching) – South Australian School of Art 1967\nBachelor of Arts Degree (Drama\,English\, Fine Arts) Flinders University\, Adelaide 1970 \nSOLO EXHIBITIONS\nUnfolding\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2019\nLacuna\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2015\nUnwrapped Hong Kong\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2013\nFluid\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2011\nHong Kong Unwrapped\, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts Gallery 2009\nFlow\, Nha Trien Lam/Exhibition House\, Hanoi Vietnam 2002\nFlow\, Harbourside\, Darling Harbour\, Sydney Gay Games Cultural Festival 2002\nFlow\, a drawing installation Counihan Gallery in Brunswick 2000\nWorks On Paper\, Scope Gallery\, Melbourne 1995\nDrawings\, Firestation Community Arts Centre\, Dandenong Vic 1993\nDrawings\, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery\, Townsville Qld 1992\nDrawings\, Adelaide Festival Centre\, Adelaide 1992\nDrawings\, Malthouse Gallery\, Malthouse Theatres\, Melbourne 1991\nStranded Shores\, Reconnaissance Gallery\, Melbourne 1987\nDrawings\, University Gallery\, Adelaide University\, Adelaide 1978 \nGROUP EXHIBITIONS\n45 at 45\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2017\nEclectic St.\, Easey St Artist Studios 2017\nIdentity\, Midsumma\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne 2011\nConstellations – A Large Number of Small drawings\, RMIT Gallery 2010\nThree by Three –designs for AB’s Interplay\, Vic Arts Centre 2008\nDrawn to the Stage\, Victorian Arts Centre Gallery 2007\n308b an exhibition of five artists\, Counihan Gallery in Brunswick 2001\nN.A.V.A. Beginning with a diploma of art and design at Caulfield Tech Clive went on to complete a major in painting. \nHe then worked for a wide variety of theatre companies as a designer\, painter\, props maker and stage hand\, including four years working on stadium shows with the Walt Disney Company that toured throughout Australia\, New Zealand\, Hong Kong\, Taiwan and Japan. \nDuring this time he developed an interest in the forms of cultural imperialism represented by American entertainment productions. These working-class reflections on cultural forces were also developed through travelling and artistic observation. Clive travelled widely in a pre-globalisation era\, when much of the world still retained strong national identities represented through clothing\, imagery and costume. \nA journal practice of frequent drawing and photography emerged to document these rare experiences\, building up folios of notes and references that would create a wealth of reference material for Clive to draw on in future paintings. \nAlongside these travels\, he developed a significant career as an art director in the emerging Australian film and television industry with roles on productions such as The Sullivans in 1976\, Against the Wind\, Ned Kelly\, Road Games\, The Blue Lagoon filmed in Fiji in 1979\, continuing with Strikebound\, Kangaroo\, Five Mile Creek\, Round the Twist etc. Following a move to New Zealand\, Clive worked as an art director on the 90s US TV series Hercules\, which sparked a keen interest in Greek mythology. \nOn his return to Australia Clive built a studio at home so he could concentrate on his own painting. He continues to work as a specialist scenery painter and scenic artist in film and television on shows such as Shantaram\, The Dry\, Dirt Music\, The Newsreader\, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart etc. \nClive has maintained a decades long studio practice as an oil painter\, and in 2010 he staged his first self titled solo exhibition of large canvases at 1000 Pound Bend gallery in Melbourne CBD. This was followed in 2018 by Light and GLOOM at Neon Parlour in Thornbury. In 2023 he held a third successful solo show In Reality at a Fitzroy gallery. In 2024 he shows new paintings in his exhibition more than this at fortyfivedownstairs gallery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707889612488-51f9dd9f-ea8d”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night\nTuesday 18th June\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”VIEW FULL ONLINE CATALOGUE” color=”warning” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Ffile%2Fd%2F1MsKChbn7zUI_YWvvvux_mpvquUbAmGFC%2Fview%3Fusp%3Ddrive_link”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Through a captivating blend of bricolaged plastics\, toys\, and found objects Stefano embarks on a personal odyssey\, exploring a lifetime of captivation with the female form. \nThe artworks pulsate with a tension between youth and decline\, this interplay embodies the artist’s struggle with fading desire and the fleeting nature of beauty. \nThe exhibition is a dialogue between contrasting feminine archetypes: the crazed beauty of youth (The Virgin) versus the aging crone (Death) hint at a darker side of desire. This duality challenges the audience to confront the multifaceted nature of femininity (The Muse) and its impact on the artist’s life. \nThroughout the exhibition\, skeletal forms and haunting imagery weave a sombre counterpoint to the sensuality. This macabre dance underscores the urgency of the artist’s self-examination and the desire to leave a lasting mark before time claims him. \nChained to an Idiot promises a deeply personal and thought-provoking journey. Stefano Ives invites viewers to confront their own mortality and grapple with the ever-shifting desires that shape our relationship with the female form as we age. \nReview in ArtsHub – CLICK HERE \nImage 1: Spiritus Mundi\, Stephen (Stefano) Ives\, 2022\, bricolage mixed media sculpture of plastics and metal\, 90 x 90cm\nImage 2: The Buddha of Distraction\, Stephen (Stefano) Ives\, 2023\, airbrush\, ink and pen on archive watercolour paper\, 77 x 57cm\nImage 3: Moaner\, Stephen (Stefano) Ives\, 2012\, mixed media\, plastics\, metal and various polymer clays and epoxies\nImage 4: Carnage\, Stephen (Stefano) Ives\, 2023\, mixed media\, plastics\, metal and various polymer clays and epoxies\, 44 x 30 x 78cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]More details coming soon…[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1710378072437-2a56c141-df50″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night\nTuesday 4th June\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”PURCHASE PRINTS HERE” color=”warning” size=”lg” align=”center” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fpoplme.co%2Fhash%2FAbJyVKcm%2F1%2Fs”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Peter Brook and a troupe of actors travel through the Sahara Desert in search of a new type of theatre. Tens of thousands of sheep spontaneously panic and stampede across Oxfordshire. A flock of birds gather for a conference. The play asks: who do we follow and why? \n100 Reasons for War is a series of vignettes exploring the very nature of war and humanity. A play about the power of language\, the birth of public relations\, the difference between a society of baboons and a society of bonobos\, and ultimately\, why we’ve had so many wars since the “Great War”. Written in 2015\, 100 Reasons for War is a funny\, provocative\, and cautionary response to the 100-year anniversary of Gallipoli. \nReview for 100 Reasons for War directed by Bob Pavlich from a short season at La Mama in 2017: “…most impressive and completely engaging” – Suzanne Sandow\, Stage Whispers \nImage by Simon McCulloch[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f19a93-e78d”][vc_column_text]Carpet and Sand writer: Robert Reid \n100 Reasons for War (War\, what is it good for?) writer: Tom Holloway \nDirector: Bob Pavlich \nCast: AYA\, Ciline Ajobong\, Clarisse Bonello\, Finn McGrath\, Lucy Rees\, Mark Yeates\, Tilly Legge\, and Walt Dyson \nLighting Designer: Tim Bonser \nDramaturg: Lucy Rees \nProducers: Helen Mayers \nStage Manager: Audrey Page[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f19a93-e78d”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nSingle show full: $49\nSingle show concession: $39\nSingle show group 6+: $39\nDouble bill full: $79\nDouble bill concession: $59\nDouble bill group 6+: $59 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Carpet and Sand single tickets 100 Reasons for War single tickets Double bill tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Her work has been shortlisted in the Glover Prize (2022)\, Hadley’s Art Prize (2022\, 2021 and 2019) and Bruny Prize (2018 and 2016). Her most recent solo exhibtions Sunset Clause and Colonial Heat were held at In the Skies Gallery in Lorne\, Victoria in 2021 and 2022\, and at fortyfivedownstairs in 2018. Since graduating from a Masters in painting at Victorian College of the Arts in 1995\, Amanda has been the recipient of Asialink and Arthur Boyd Bundanon residencies for painting. Her exhibition Friable: The Lost Garden was held at Geelong Gallery in 2015 as part of the gallery’s regional artists program. \nStranglehold: Colonial Heat continues the artist’s long-term exploration of Australian landscape history in response to the troubled ecological present and environmental policy stasis. The artist documents sites where optimistic views of early colonial landscape painting were made as well as places where logging practices have had deleterious environmental impacts. While the resulting images mimic nineteenth-century landscape silhouettes\, vibrant\, almost toxic colour manipulates generic scenes\, suggesting disturbance and ecological urgency. Traditionally\, ‘sunset views’ suggest the passing of time\, encouraging lyrical feelings and a sense of escape\, but in these paintings twilight is suffused with subtle threat. The artist variously depicts invasive blackberry and sweet pittosporum infestations on Gadabanud Country (Otway State Forest) and across selected Tasmanian locations. Elsewhere\, sparse\, uncanny landscapes evoke ecological aftermath in current and former state-owned logging coupes in Tasmania and Victoria. \nIn these different depictions\, the artist creates temporal ‘mashups’ of colonial past with colonial present; bold imagery and wild colour fashion a strange and disquieting beauty. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707890772822-6d32c24d-c6da”][vc_column_text]Opening Night\nTuesday 7th May\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required. \nThe artist\, Amanda Johnson\, will also be in conversation with esteemed Art Historian Assoc. This narcissism has powered the drive to present and reinterpret the world around us. Artists have always shown a mirror to the world\, interpreting it and redefining it into a multitude of versions. Creating art is like a diary entry\, where artists absorb the world around them and regurgitate it back to the viewer. \nIn this series\, I have chosen engravings of classical statues\, which have always appeared to me as a particularly narcissistic form of human presentation. Through them\, we strive to see ourselves represented as the perfection of physical beauty\, as actual gods. \nThe arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) is no different\, except it is cannibalising the artists’ art. AI consumes the pantheon of art that has defined the human face and form for millennia\, from ancient statues to modern photography. It regurgitates our representations of ourselves back to us\, resulting in an endless mirrored hall of confection that can be fascinating and beautiful\, whilst also unnerving and frightening. \nMy ongoing fascination with motherboards – the engine rooms of computer technology – arrives at a potent juncture in the evolution of art. In order to make my art\, I need to destroy the machinery that I use to make my art. I cannibalise the very mechanics that craft the digital world\, colonising antique engravings with their alien presence. \nExtracted from a discarded laptop\, the original motherboard component was scanned at ultra-high resolution. Multiple representations and generations were placed\, layered\, rotated and meticulously manoeuvred in enormous files with dozens and dozens of layers. Yet\, throughout the process the motherboard never loses its purity; it is never distorted or curved. It is not too hard when you are in Rome standing in front of statues at the Capitoline Museum.\nAn ongoing theme in my work is the fascination of collage and assemblage. I have been trying to work out how I could use actual oil on canvas cut-outs to create a new language. How could I make this work? While standing in front of a Roman bust on my tour of Italy\, it dawned on me.\nThis work should be monochromatic\, a plethora of images\, tumbling and falling and creating new compositions organically\, as if they’ve just been dug up and are speaking to us from the ancient world.\nThese images were taken from several museums (Museo di Roma\, Museo di Palazzo Grimani\, Musei Vaticani) on two trips to Italy and create this new body of work.\nI could also not pass up exploiting one of my favourite subject matter – markets – hence the flavour of the the streets and food\, so prominent in Italy\, feature in the creation of my new show\, The Grand Tour. \nImage 1: Grand Tour 3\, Gavin Brown\, oil on canvas\, 122 x 152cm\nImage 2: Grand Tour 2\, Gavin Brown\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 122 x 153cm\nImage 3: Grand Tour 7\, Gavin Brown\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 120 x 120cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]CURRICULUM VITAE\nBorn: 1964\, Melbourne\, Australia\nEducation: 1985\, Fine Arts (Painting)\, RMIT Melbourne\ngavinbrown.com.au\ninstagram.com/gavinbrownartist \nSolo Exhibitions\n2024 ‘The Grand Tour’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2023 Commission work\, Oria\, Apulia\, Italy\n2022 ‘After the Fire’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2020 Graham Geddes\, Melbourne\n2019 ‘The Power of Pattern’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2017 ‘Market Market’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2015 ‘The Printed Painting’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2014 Commission work\, Solaire Resort\, Manila\, Philippines\n2013 ‘Running with Scissors’\, Rtist Gallery\, Melbourne\n2013 ‘Urban Scrawl’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2011 ‘Gratuitous Garland’\, Gavin Brown & William Eicholtz\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2010 Catherine Asquith Gallery\, Melbourne\n2009 Dog’s Bar Art Series\n2008 ‘Behind the Curtain’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2007 ‘Little Dramas’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2006 ‘Interior exterior’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2005 ‘Body of Shadows’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2004 ‘In Your Dreams’\, Patrizia Autore Gallery\, Melbourne\n2003 ‘In a Room by Myself’\, Patrizia Autore Gallery\, Melbourne\n2002 ‘Carpet Burns’\, Nellie Castan Gallery\, Melbourne\n2002 ‘Pansexual Prince(ess)’\, Midsumma Festival\, Melbourne\n2001 ‘Carpet Burns’\, Light Square Gallery\, Adelaide\n2000 ‘Eat\, drink and take a long hard look at yourself’\, Patrizia Autore Gallery\,Melbourne\n1999 ‘Changing Face’\, George Gallery\, Melbourne\n1997 ‘Dancing With The Enemy’\, Kirkcaldy Davies Gallery\, Melbourne\n1995 ‘When I Grow Up I Want to Run Away and Join the Circus’\, Kirkcaldy Davies Gallery\, Melbourne\n1992 ‘Solo Exhibition’\, Midsumma Festival\, Melbourne\n1984-7 Solo Textile Designer for the Fashion Design Council \nGroup Exhibitions\n2023 ‘Radical Utopias’\, RMIT University\n2020 ‘Here’\, fortyfivedownstairs\, Melbourne\n2016 Bright Space Gallery\, Vale Street Artist Exhibition\n2016 National Gallery of Victoria\, 200 Years of Australian Fashion\n2015 MContemporary Gallery\, Sydney\n2012 ‘Mix Tape 1980s’\, National Gallery of Victoria\, Melbourne\n2012 ‘Summer Show’\, Edwina Courlette\, Brisbane\, Queensland\n2011 Vale Street Studios Group Exhibition\, St Kilda Town Hall Gallery\n2011 ‘Man Style’\, National Gallery of Victoria\, Melbourne\n2005 ‘Recent Acquisitions’\, Linden Gallery\, City of Port Philip\, Melbourne\n2004 ‘120 Degrees of Separation’\, Linden Gallery\, Melbourne\n2004 ‘Freaks\, Fiends & Folly’\, Bright Gallery\, Melbourne\n2003 ‘2003 National Works on Paper’\, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery\n2002 5.O.P.T. A metaphoric position not to be crossed; a past to be forgotten; or a Rubicon once crossed to an irreversible position. The use of line in these paintings has no such symbolic meaning. Sometimes a vector between two arbitrary points\, at times bunched in proximity creating a plane floating over unidentified ground. Similar to previous works by the artist\, the line is a vehicle for experimentation with colour. The inherent energy of each colour that attracts or repels its neighbour also lifts it above or buries it below the ground. The immanent energy of each hue is transformed when taken from isolation and juxtaposed with another. In some works the line may hover placidly or imply kinetic or perhaps electrical energy. \nNo representation is attempted or implied in any of these abstract artworks. However\, the process of making is not purely Platonic despite a formalist intention.  Images often challenged the process. It is not difficult to imagine superimposed landscapes or seascapes or cityscapes. The artist may exorcise the vision of a real world but ambiguous evocations of a physical world somehow persist. \nImage 1 – No Plan\, Andrew Scollo\, acrylic (synthetic polymer) on linen\, 149 x 143cm\nImage 2 – No Air\, Andrew Scollo\, acrylic (synthetic polymer) on linen\, 100 x 54cm\nImage 3 – Acid Rain\, Andrew Scollo\, acrylic (synthetic polymer) on linen\, 156 x 87cm\nImage 4 – Traces\, Andrew Scollo\, acrylic (synthetic polymer) on linen\, 202 x 54cm\nImage 5 – Slice\, Andrew Scollo\, acrylic (synthetic polymer) on linen\, 99 x 44cm \nSALLY VIVIAN \nWorking across disciplines\, Sally Vivian’s practice is installation based\, using mixed media and sometimes incorporating video. Her work reflects interests in time\, materiality\, ephemerality and metaphysics\, often exploring the interaction of light\, surfaces\, reflection and projection. Vivian is an emerging artist\, albeit late in life\, graduating from the VCA Master of Contemporary Art in 2023. Whether one needs to reflect on life\, one would isolate themselves into a private retreat. Linking the desert and the home space resembles the personal isolation and privacy one may look for as a sort of escape from the world or as a retreat to their personal space to self-reflect. However positive or negative it may be\, each artwork depicts a lonesome figure (or two) in a desolate setting\, having a moment of introspection and experiencing the fleeting feeling as they interact with their surroundings. \nFinding Solace consists of paintings done primarily in oil paints\, some of them incorporating elements of mixed media. Objects included in each painting reflect on the homeliness of a room\, creating a sense of intimacy within the setting. Sometimes\, the structures appearing in each work reflects the condition of the state of mind an individual is currently experiencing. With the figure in each artwork\, they convey the sense of intimacy and self-reflection with the interaction between spaces. With Finding Solace\, it is seen as a personal reflection on oneself and the desire to find the inner comfort within solitude. \nImage 1: Transient Affection\, Kenny Phan\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 95.7 x 50cm\nImage 2: Cloudgazing\, Kenny Phan\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 50 x 40cm\nImage 3: Pondering under the auroras\, Kenny Phan\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 51 x 61cm\nImage 4: Missing You (like the desert misses the rain)\, Kenny Phan\, 2023\, oil and oil pastels on canvas\, 51 x 61cm\nImage 5: Phantom Wind\, Kenny Phan\, 2024\, oil on canvas\, 40.6 x 50.4cm\nImage 6: Unprecedented Times Beyond the Desolate Wasteland\, Kenny Phan\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 50.6 x 40.5cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Kenny Phan is a Sydney-based artist that seeks to create works of art relating to inner feelings and create a small narrative in each artwork he makes. Focusing on the imagination of mind and the spirit of the subjective\, he seeks to express a sense of the subconscious and to further dive into the depths of imagination. Influences from the surrealist works of paintings he encountered throughout his life and growing up with cartoons\, comics and graphic novels\, he uses the form of painting to combine the graphic style of drawing into another medium. \nKenny has completed a BFA at National Art School in 2019 and had participated in two group exhibitions so far as part of his academic curriculum. It’s not just a musical show because JAM (the visual artist) also plays images\, plays lasers and plays lights. It’s not just a light show because music is being interpreted\, improvised\, and so are the lights. It’s not just electronic music although most sounds being generated are pretty much electronic and it’s not jazz although there is a ton of complex harmonies\, rhythms\, and a fair bit of improvisation on top of that. It’s a hybrid show that encapsulates the essence of cross art forms. \nIn this project\, JAM opens up a completely new category within live performance. Besides controlling electronic sounds\, he is a live visual artist that acts as a musician. This happens because JAM is on stage pressing buttons\, rotating knobs and turntables\, “playing” with the band as if he is one of the musicians\, but more than sounds\, his actions also influence the visual art on screen and even lighting on stage.  \nFar-removed from the traditional role of a singer\, M has created an innovative place for live looping. That and the use of effects\, wordless songs\, vocal improvisation and looping textures augment the potential way by which this singer can intervene with the music and express herself making it possible to also act as an instrument. \nThey truly believe that after decades of jazz innovators concentrating on the development of musical elements (melody\, rhythms\, harmonic progression etc.) this genre is the perfect vehicle to lead a new world of performance where the same proficiency\, expressiveness and creativity can be expressed live through digital and visual elements. [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1970e-2544″][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $35\nConcession: $30\nGroup 6+: $25 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Be immersed in a world of sublime lyrical euphoria and dark\, profoundly unsettling angst as the struggle between life and death unfolds in the most extraordinary music ever written. \nThis Quintet was to be Schubert’s last completed work\, written only weeks before his death during a period of rapidly declining health for the composer\, aged only 31. Desperate to fill the void and secure his legacy in the world of music\, in the final year of his life Schubert produced his most extraordinary compositions including the two piano trios\, three piano sonatas\, his last song cycle\, and the exquisite String Quintet – his first and only work for this ensemble. \nViolinists Sophia Kirsanova and Emily Beauchamp\, Violist William  Clarke and Cellists Joshua Dema and Belinda Liew join forces for this momentous chamber work. The five performers come with a wealth of experience which they have shared across the stages of Australia\, Europe and Asia. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f165ff-6c9f”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $43\nConcession: $33\nGroup 6+: $33 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]

I’m not sure\, but I know I’m one of them. For whatever reason\, I have a strong desire to communicate on a deeper level\, whether verbally\, with words on paper\, or paint on canvas. This exhibition is a selection of my endeavours over several decades of using clay\, paint\, and words. It’s been almost thirty years since I worked in clay and about five years since I gave up painting to write my first book. My second book will be launched here on April 4. \nI’ve had no formal training in art but I grew up surrounded by art and artists so it was a natural choice when\, in my late twenties\, I decided to put effort into something other than my fraught romantic relationships. Often there are stories or messages in my paintings; some are subtle and open to interpretation\, others are blatantly obvious.  Some of these stories are personal and contain symbols of my own invention\, such as the cat as the dispassionate witness to human foibles. Or the fish as a symbol of cold-blooded emotional detachment\, especially that of a lover. Occasionally I’ve copied the work of an old master\, but in my own style and adding a message of my own. \nUnsurprisingly\, as I approach 70 my sense of my own mortality is increasing. That reality has spurred me on to organize this exhibition\, which may well be my last. And in the spirit of showcasing several aspects of my life\, I’m dispensing with a long-winded opening night speech in favour of dancing to a couple of Tango Nuevo tunes with a friend. Tango is my hobby and I want to dance while I can still bend my knees.” \n\nJane Sinclair\n\n  \nImage captions:\nImage 1 – Hope\, Jane Sinclair\, 2011\, oil on canvas\, 100 x 100cm\nImage 2 – Man and Child\, Jane Sinclair\, ink on paper\, 82 x 60cm\nImage 3 – The Surgeon and the Angel\, Jane Sinclair\, oil on canvas\, 150 x 100cm\nImage 4 – The Old Digger\, Jane Sinclair\, oil on canvas\, 100 x 100cm\nImage 5 – The Outsider\, Jane Sinclair\, oil on canvas\, 100 x 100cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Jane Sinclair\nBorn Melbourne 1954 \nMy parents loved art\, cats\, and classical music. But I was a rebellious teenager with little interest in their world so at seventeen I went with my surfer boyfriend to live in Queensland\, where we bought a dog\, listened to rock music\, and worked on getting a suntan. \nBack in Melbourne years later\, I decided to try to make a living out of art. My uncle\, Robert Langley\, was a ceramic sculptor and I’d sat in on some of his classes as a child so clay seemed a good place to start.  I set myself up in a studio above Pigtail Pottery in Brunswick Street Fitzroy\, selling my sculptures through the Pigtail Pottery shop. I had my first and only solo show of sculptures there in 1991. Before long I became frustrated with the limitations of clay and took up painting. \nFrom 1996\, when I was part of an exhibition with four other painters at Chapel off Chapel (Little Chapel street Prahran)\, I exhibited regularly until 2010. Exhibitions I was in over those years include three at ROAR Studios (Brunswick Street Fitzroy)\, six at Manyung Gallery (Mornington)\, and three at the Jackman Gallery (Grey Street St. Kilda). My last exhibition was a solo show of 36 paintings at the Jackman in 2010. \nAll my adult life I’ve written scraps of personal writing\, especially in times of distress. Yet until I read the bundles of old letters between my parents that my mother had given me\, I’d never considered the possibility of writing a book. It was as I tried to make sense of their marriage that I began to think it was a story worth telling. Writing then took over my life and my first book\, ‘ Shy Love Smiles and Acid Drops\, Letters from a difficult marriage’ was published in 2021. My second book will be launched at 45 Downstairs on the 4th of April.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707892854748-48188c9d-a634″][vc_column_text]Opening Night\nTuesday 26th March\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required. \nBook Launch Event\nThursday 4th April\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nLarge Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The images involve experiences and reminiscences of landscapes both in Melbourne wetlands and on Flinders Island in Tasmania.  I call them secret places because they are presented as universal images derived from amorphous swathes of watercolour that reveal ponds\, seaweed\, a beach\, moonlight and farmland – not bold\, but places of solitude – the flow and pigments have provided the source.  Secret places can be found in a smudge or a line which reveals another world or a reminiscence of significance. \nThe oil painting\, Oasis\, depicts a bright sunlit pond\, surrounded by saplings\, leptospermums and wattles.  The pond is reminiscent of the ceilings of European basilicas but\, rather than viewed overhead\, it is an aerial view of the sky reflected in the water of the pond.  Depicted at the top of the painting is the undulating curve of a bike track and at the bottom is a framing track.  The picture invites the viewer to participate in suburban passive recreation. \nThe smaller images are part of an ongoing study which aims to create an inventory of marks\, hieroglyphs from the methods described above and studying the markings and subtle tonal differences on natural forms – in particular the bark of eucalypts.  Scars left from ancient injuries\, the trails of insects or the ravages of age and weather.  Timelessness\, of line\, form\, tone and colour abundantly available in the infinitely small and the vastly universal – random creations to convey an awareness of the unknowable of which we are part. \n  \nImage 1 – Oasis\, Louise Tyler\, 2023\, oil on canvas\, 101 x 101cm\nImage 2 – Eucalypt #1\, Louise Tyler\, 2023\, watercolour and charcoal on paper\, 32.5 x 44.5cm\nImage 3 – Secret Place #1\, Louise Tyler\, 2023\, watercolour and acrylic on paper\, 62 x 45cm\nImage 4 – Secret Place #17\, Louise Tyler\, 2023\, watercolour and acrylic on paper\, 62 x 45cm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]1974     Lynch Prize exhibition\, Gallery A\, Toorak\, Victoria.\n1977     Diploma of Art (Painting)\, Prahran CAE\, Melbourne.\n1978     Blazey Street Painters Exhibition\, Pinacotheca Gallery\, Richmond\, Victoria.\n1979     Eltham Prize Exhibition\, Eltham\, Victoria.\n2023     Solo exhibition\, Journey Planner & 7 Views of The Mountain\, Strait Works Gallery\, Whitemark\, Tasmania. \nIndividual works held in private collections. \nReference:  Mary Eagle\, “Exploration of Ideas”\, The Age\, January 1979.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707893137149-9ea32590-6523″][vc_column_text]Opening Night\nTuesday 26th March\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nSmall Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Stemming from a slightly drunken conversation\, a gauntlet was thrown down. The challenge – to swim the year through.\nThe camera\, encased in an underwater housing and ungainly to handle\, initially came along as a distraction from the cold but it quickly became evident that something special was happening. The sea is transformative\, and cold water a physical and metaphorical challenge to embrace; the Unknown Swimmer becomes every one of us – our struggles\, our deeper yearnings and our capacity for transcendence. This exhibit looks to sea and its danger and beauty\, the comfort and the cold and the eternally shifting canvas it presents.\nYou never regret a swim. \nImages courtesy of Jason Reekie[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text]Talk was there was a farmer with a shotgun loaded with salt cartridges. If he caught you on his land you’d get a barrel load. Not deadly but it would sting for a week.\nRegardless\, like a scene from a coming of age movie\, four of us no older than ten would crawl under a barbed wire fence\, crouch low and with a hiss at each other to hurry\,  dash through the farmers paddocks down to an icy cold creek. Crystal clear\, lined with prehistoric looking tree ferns and rich with freshwater yabbies it felt like a lost world. The fear of discovery couldn’t temper the thrill of discovering this magical world.\nThe curiosity that drove those childhood adventures has never left and led to driving the 12000km loop around Australia in an old four wheel drive held together with wire and empty beer cans; stumbling lost on an active volcano at midnight; scuba diving the cold waters of southern Australia to the Great Barrier Reef and the coral reefs of Thailand; eating with Hari Krishnas in Prague and leaving with a spiritual feeling that has never quite left; getting lost in the Medinas of Marrakech; rafting in the Czech Republic; crying at the sight of Uluru in central Australia and being plucked from mountainous seas off a perilous rocky Australian coast. \nPhotography has enabled a career of being curious about people\, places and ideas while photographing for a diverse range clients and personal projects\nI live in Melbourne with my family and a rescue dog called Heidi who’s learning to trust us and I can often be found in and around the water with a camera exploring new ideas. \nFeb 2024 – digital installation with The Unknown Swimmer chamber opera\nJan 2024 – Ukaria cultural Centre artists residency participant\nSep 2023 – IPA awards – Honorable Mention\nMay 2023 – No Commission- MonW studio -Hero Palm solo installation exhibit\nNov 2022 – Australian Photography Awards- Finalist\nDec 2021 – Asia Pacific Photography Awards – Highly Commended and Silver awards\nAug 2021 – IPA awards – Honorable Mention[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1707893371707-b1524846-904f”][vc_column_text]Opening Night\nWednesday 13th March\n5:00pm to 7:00pm\nSmall Gallery \nFree Entry.\nAll Welcome.\nNo Booking Required.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Snowy is trying to find himself. Fate has other plans. \nSimon Longman’s hilarious\, heartfelt black-comedy makes its Australian premiere\, produced by The Ninth Floor. \nAcclaimed director Iain Sinclair (A View From The Bridge and Berlin\, MTC) directs Laurence Boxhall (The Mousetrap\, Comedy Theatre) and William McKenna (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as Snowy and Paul in this mercurial\, darkly funny\, and deeply human play about friendship\, purpose\, loneliness\, and a cow named Sandy. \nWith lighting from multi-Green Room award winner Richard Vabre\, and a stellar team behind the scenes bringing rural Herefordshire to life in Melbourne\, ‘Milked’ sees Snowy and Paul navigate a world where the grass always seems greener on the other side. \nImage by Kirsty O’Connor \nREVIEWS \n★★★★ “I defy anyone not to laugh out loud at Milked… It’s an immersive theatrical experience\, deepened by the way it traces all the animal pain underneath the comedy.” The Age \n★★★★ “Sinclair gives the script and young cast physical and metaphorical space to shine… Boxhall and McKenna ably walk the play’s tonal tightrope\, making the audience chuckle then feel sad or uncomfortable a moment later. They have an excellent rapport…” Limelight \n“This production is tight\, focused and entwines the darkness and the light in a clear-eyed\, entertaining way. The audience is in the hands of theatremakers at the top of their craft.” Australian Arts Review \n“It’s carried by two excellent performances… McKenna and Boxhall handling the shifts in tone from funny to sad\, from harangue to revelation\, and realistic to ridiculous with accomplished ease.” Stage Whispers[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1e64f-de5b”][vc_column_text]Writer: Simon Longman \nDirector: Iain Sinclair \nAssistant Director: Kirsty O’Connor \nCast: Laurence Boxhall\, William McKenna\, Richard Piper \nLighting Designer: Richard Vabre \n\nSet and Costume Design: Louisa Fitzgerald \n\nSound Design: Connor Brown \n\nStage Management: Jessica Smart \nProduction Manager: Ashleigh Walwyn \nFight Choreographer: Lyndall Grant \nProducer: Laurence Boxhall \n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f1e64f-de5b”][vc_column_text]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $2.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_empty_space]Buy Tickets [/vc_column][/vc_row]
