From those circumstances of sharing and interacting with art –  both confined and exposed –  the proceeding works continue Hickman’s material exploration of the intersections of public space\, protest\, and art-making. \n  \nA maximalist bombardment of information and image – the banner project unleashes a frenzy of collaged notes\, comments\, day-dreams\, news articles\, and sloganistic calls-to-action relaying the artist’s frustrations within the fashion industry\, queerness\, and late-stage capitalism.  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]\nChelsea Hickman is a contemporary artist and fashion designer from lutruwita/Tasmania\, based in Naarm/Melbourne. Her interdisciplinary practice explores abject consumerism\, fashion industry waste\, punk-feminism\, and the Anthropocene\, using found objects and textile waste as primary materials. Her work spans performance\, painting\, installation\, photography\, film\, textiles\, fashion and live art. \n  \nShe received the Open Category Award at the 2020 Woods Street Youth Art Prize for her textile work Danger Danger Danger Danger Danger\, and in 2022 was awarded Best in Category – Fashion Design at the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards. In 2023\, she facilitated workshops at the NGV for the Alexander McQueen: Mind\, Mythos\, Muse exhibition program. Her performance work DEAD STOCK premiered at Carriageworks for Performance Space in 2023 and was presented again at MOD. As the lamb roasts and the ouzo flows\, desire and ambition boil over. \nRecent graduate Annalise Gelagotis makes her professional debut as Julie\, starring alongside acclaimed Broadway leading man Adam-Jon Fiorentino (Mary Poppins\, Saturday Night Fever) and two-time Green Room Award nominee Izabella Yena. \nIn this audacious reimagining of Strindberg’s Miss Julie\, directed by Harry Haynes (founder and Artistic Director of The Liminal Space)\, the classic is torn from its 19th-century roots and reborn in the pressure-cooker of modern fine dining\, where old hierarchies die hard and nothing stays simmering for long. \nA collision of Mediterranean rituals\, Australian ambition\, and the raw ache of longing. \nFor a full immersive experience\, dining experience tickets (ticket price includes seeing the show) offer the chance to experience Miss Julie alongside a curated menu. This exclusive Greek inspired meal and wine pairing led by Masterchef Alumni and celebrity chef Conor Curran (@creamy_confusion) brings the world of the play to life through taste\, aroma\, and atmosphere\, and includes a dessert by Niki Louca from My Greek Kitchen (@mygreekkitchen). Please check the Dining experience menu tab for more information. This insight has conjured a plethora of images for me\, some joyful and others more painful where I’ve been pushed to the brink of darkness. \nThese lessons have shaped who I am today and I am grateful for them as they have led me on a path of self discovery and awareness through the art of meditation. \nThis stillness has provided me with clarity\, and has brought me a new perspective that has allowed me to grow and evolve as a human being. \n“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly\, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” \nMAYA ANGELOU \n  \nAberrations by Michaela Sandberg \nIn an age ruled by screens\, where perfection can be attained through pixels\, Aberrations seeks beauty in error and the unexpected. \nThrough a process of digital exploration\, these photographs dissolve into artifacts of technological infancy. Here\, software is utilized not as a means to perfection\, but as a medium that speaks its own visual language. A language that risks extinction as technology hurdles toward idealised uniformity. \nAn aberration is a deviation. Within these deviations\, there is an invitation to welcome what was not planned for. Each image is a negotiation between control and surrender\, between the software’s pursuit of perfection and the artist’s embrace of imperfection. Aberrations critiques our desire to correct\, enhance\, and manipulate\, and serves as a reminder that\, in the midst of rapid technological evolution\, one thing remains constant: the beauty that exists beyond our intentions and plans.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’s Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Dawn Allmark \nDawn has been a practising artist for over 30 years and is also the driving force behind Madam Frou Frou\, a successful hair & beauty salon based in Carlton\, Melbourne. With boundless energy and an infectious enthusiasm for life\, Dawn constantly strives to push back any boundaries between her and her chosen field\, and endeavours to both unite innovation with creativity. By bringing joy and inspiration to everyone she meets\, Dawn hopes to touch the viewer with her abstract paintings in such a way as to elicit a deep and meaningful response. \n  \nMichaela Sandberg \nMichaela Sandberg is a multidisciplinary artist working from Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia. Through the amalgamation of disparate elements\, her work seeks to merge the traditional with the neoteric\, the human with the ethereal\, and the intimate with the monumental. Practising fine art and photography in both analogue and digital forms\, hse employs an ever-expanding range of mediums to construct her work. She embraces the exclusive opportunity of each medium independently continuing to explore the limitless potential for harmony and synthesis between them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1750816500348-bf5fbf5c-26a5″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 22 July\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Glenn has a crisis on his hands. He’s had a successful career as a marketing exec. for a major Oil company\, selling the fuel for the American Dream. Now he’s waking up to the damage it’s doing to the climate. In a secret meeting he consults with Bud\, a slick young talent from the Tobacco industry\, to figure out how to sell a toxic product – and how to live with yourself if you succeed. \nCompelling\, unnerving\, and piercingly relevant\, Smokescreen is a psychologically-charged battle of wits that unpicks how the climate crisis we face today was shaped by the invisible hands of Ad Men. Searing performances by Damon Baudin and C.S. Carroll ignite a pressure-cooker of manipulation\, morality\, and earth-shattering choices about controlling the narrative while the planet burns. \n“It’s the job of the arts to challenge and confront\, especially in difficult times. This is a power struggle played out under the flight paths. The stakes are the survival of the planet.” – Canberra Times \nPhoto by Novel Photographic \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f19332-677f”][vc_column_text css=””]Writer/Director: Christopher Samuel Carroll \nPerformers: Christopher Samuel Carroll and Damon Baudin \nLighting Designer: Antony Hateley and Ash Basham[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f19332-677f”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nFull: $45\nConcession: $35\nGroup 6+: $35 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $5.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. Showcasing Snelling’s unstoppable no-holds-barred performance style\, this rollercoaster show aligns the personal with the universal\, and makes visible the invisible experience of chronic illness like you’ve never seen before. \nWith unflinching rawness\, gut-punching comedy and a heavenly twist\, Happy-Go-Wrong blends clowning\, poetic existentialism\, otherworldly movement and rollerskating with a spellbinding brown paper set that moves with Andi in striking visual metaphor. \nIn a remarkable parallel journey to Andi’s own recovery from Lyme disease\, Happy-Go-Wrong truly is the little show that could. Since its humble beginnings at Melbourne Fringe 2019\, it has garnered five awards\, countless standing ovations\, 5-star reviews\, and toured main stages across Australia. Her illustrative stylized banksias are painted in accordance to the flower spikes and leaf information diligently recorded by the authors. The seed cones are a point of colourful whimsy and the backgrounds acknowledge the land these beautiful plants were created in. \nThe artist’s interest was piqued on realising that a banksia was not just a shrub with yellow tubular shaped flowers and saw tooth leaves. Banksias are trees\, shrubs\, prostrates and ground cover. Flower spikes range from about 3cm high to 40cm\, most are upright but some are pendulous\, they can have a vertical axis\, be round or have cone shaped clusters\, and range in colour from green to creams\, yellows\, oranges\, reds & to purples. Leaves can be ivy shaped\, feathered like a fern\, saw-toothed\, finely serrated\, linear\, oblong\, obovate or elliptical and sized from a few millimetres to 50cm. Each banksia on display shows the simplistic essence of how particular species differ from others.  All 79 species are displayed in this exhibition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Athenie Leckey came to art officially while studying an Advanced Diploma Of Visual Arts after many years studying and working in areas of Health and Education. Crafting was a powerful family influence and she looks at acrylic painting as an extension of all that has come before. \nAthenie has participated in many group exhibitions since her first student exhibitions in 2018. Franklin (aka sue.k.). \nWith the intent to open the experience of viewing to one that’s unhindered by narrative\, each work exhibited as part of Drawing Space: minus and plus depicts a sphere\, or spheres\, and a horizon line only. While minimal in what is presented\, these\, along with the surface marks found in most\, become the tools to negotiate the complexities of space\, time\, and the emotive power of colour and image. Conventional means with which to apply narrative are negated leaving nothing but a pure experience of what is before\, the material substance of the work. \nThe approach taken in the production of these works\, and the framing choice specific to the aesthetics\, lead to a blurring of multiple boundaries. Layering of colours and marks in a similar way found with painting leave the boundary between drawing and painting precarious and in question. This is compounded by the choice to frame to the edge of the work without the traditional mounting on matboard found with drawings\, while still placing the work under glass\, as is traditional in drawing work. The antiquated wide scoop style of the dark timber frame with its high edge lends itself to a removal of temporal positioning\, a removal of time. This is further enhanced with the absence of narrative in the pictorial space and the painterly approach to application of the medium\, they too allow a positioning of time and experience of space that is not now. Yet in contrast\, the abstract presentation of sphere and line heralds modernity and brings in to play a tension between contemporary and bygone and unveils a dichotomy within the work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]ABOUT \nSuzanne .k. He’d make a stage of anything\, dancing around\, singing to anyone who’d listen. His repertoire was packed full of gems\, but there’s one in particular we adored—the chicken dance. He’d shove a cork into his mouth as a beak and waggle about like a chicken yearning to fly. A simple idea\, really\, but the performance was something else. We’d be in stitches by the end of it—every single time. \nI was feeling lonely yesterday\, so I dug up the family archives. They’re packed away in a large cardboard box beneath the stairs\, crammed between the vacuum cleaner and Dutch oven. I can barely carry them anymore—I usually have Ellie drag them out. I was curious to see if we’d captured the famous chicken dance. \nFor the first time\, I realised Ellie appeared incrementally less over the years. At around fifteen\, he was almost entirely absent from the collection. Looking closer\, I observed a peculiar pattern. It appeared that once he caught sight of a camera\, he’d scurry off beyond the frame to avoid having his picture taken. In many of them you can see only parts of him—legs and arms mainly. It’s baffling to me how my beautiful boy could be deeply self-conscious. \nThen I remembered how much I resent having my picture taken.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Hamish Tobias is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in drawing and painting\, with a growing interest in sculpture. His work examines the ways we fixate on aspects of our appearance that others never notice\, magnifying perceived flaws to monstrous proportions in our minds. Through his practice\, he challenges conventional beauty standards and distorted self-image\, exploring the effects of warped self-perception on mental health. By creating a dialogue between opposites and evoking a sense of precariousness through imbalance and contrasting materials\, he seeks to convey these ideas with greater intensity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1743575580996-2ffc8bfe-195a”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 13 May\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

They had to drain the sea to make a country to live in. \nHitherto landscapes had served as scenery for mythological and religious subjects. Jacob van Ruysdael established the oevre in the 17thcentury with a long career essentially painting the weather.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist Bio” tab_id=”1741934322509-588ba325-069f”][vc_column_text css=””]Edward Coleridge trained and practised as an architect in the UK until\, on a trip to South America\, he held an exhibition of Chilean landscapes in Santiago. On return he enlisted in the City and Guilds of London Art School whose Principal was the landscape painter\, Roger de Grey\, the then President of the Royal Academy. \nOn graduating in 1987 Edward joined the First Fleet Re-enactment Voyage in Mauritius for the leg across the Indian Ocean and was fortunate to crew on the brigantine\, Soren Larsen\, where he found that a sailing ship and its crew (and attendant albatrosses) a constant supply of subject matter. \nWhen becalmed in the Doldrums he had the strange experience of re-enacting a scene from his ancestor’s epic poem The Ancient Mariner\, was while able to sketch the replica of the motionless Bounty nearby\, literally illustrating the line from his ancestor’s epic poem The Ancient Mariner.  \nThe galleon lay motionless\, literally: ‘as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean’. \nThe crew cheerfully him blamed for the delay. Next day a breeze bringing the first serene albatross. \nEdward engaged in a Masters study of the landscape of western Victoria at a time when the long out-of-fashion works of Eugene von Guerard were being rediscovered. This happened just as every view the German artist painted in the Western District of Victoria was about to play host to a wind farm\, the vast white turbines providing a perversely paintable subject matter. \nA fascination with mapping\, and missing the revealing style of the Ordnance Survey maps of the UK\, led to a PhD Study of Major Thomas Mitchell’s maps and artwork at Federation University\, titled Mapping Australia Felix. It centred on the Surveyor of General of NSW‘s Journal of his 1836 expedition when he ‘discovered’ Western Victoria and\, enraptured by the “completely uninhabited region”\, dubbed the region Australia Felix. \nEdward’s paintings study the rural landscape on the eastern side of the so called Western District as where the Great Dividing Range officially ends at Mount Misery\, as well as\, in contrast\, the contemporary cityscapes of Melbourne. \nThe concept of ‘Letterbox Landscapes’ was first exhibited at QDOS gallery in Lorne in January 2024.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1743575653024-f7087076-ecd8″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 13 May\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Enjoy these iconic works (both performed by Coady Green and Ricardo Roche Idini)\, step out for dinner\, and return for an evening of theatrical and musical storytelling. \nBeethoven – Immortal Beloved \nSaturday 10 May – 7:30pm \nMusicologists often overlook the crucial role that women played in shaping the legacies of great composers\, yet they were the keepers of letters\, diaries\, and the famous Salons that influenced the artistic world. Through the fascinating lens of Caroline Unger\, a celebrated singer who premiered Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and worked closely with Schubert\, Liszt\, Goethe\, and the Grimm Brothers\, The Parlour unpacks Beethoven’s life and music like never before. Acclaimed actor and director Melanie Hillman brings Unger to life\, alongside baritone Adam Miller and mezzo-soprano Karen van Spall. Illuminating Beethoven’s world and revealing his connections with Schubert and beyond\, this unique fusion of music and drama delves deep into the personal and artistic struggles of one of history’s greatest composers. \n\nMozart & Beethoven: Masters of Revolution – A Symphony and a Sonata \nSunday 11 May – 5pm \nExperience two of classical music’s most revolutionary works in a dazzling evening of virtuosity and passion. \nBeethoven’s Symphony No. 3\, Eroica—a masterpiece that shattered musical conventions—takes on new life in a breathtaking quartet arrangement by Ferdinand Ries\, Beethoven’s close friend\, student\, and secretary. This rarely heard version transforms the full symphony into a chamber music tour de force\, demanding fearless virtuosity and intricate interplay from its performers. Acclaimed musicians Sophie Rowell (violin)\, Caroline Henbest (viola)\, Josephine Vains (cello)\, and Coady Green (piano)\, breathe fire and brilliance into Beethoven’s groundbreaking work. \nComplementing the Eroica is Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major\, K. 448—a work of exquisite beauty and profound depth. This sonata’s luminous dialogue between two pianos not only showcases Mozart’s mastery of melody and form but also holds a fascinating link to Beethoven himself. The young Beethoven admired Mozart’s music\, and some musicologists hear echoes of K. 448 in Beethoven’s early piano compositions. Performing this masterpiece will be pianists Coady Green and Kevin Tamanini\, delivering a performance brimming with elegance\, energy\, and symphonic grandeur. \n\nOpera Closets \nTuesday 13 May – 7:30pm \nStep into a world where every outfit tells a story\, and every story soars with song. In Opera Closets\, multi-award-winning Australian mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd weaves an original theatrical cabaret that celebrates resilience\, transformation\, and the unexpected twists of life\, revealing how dressing up and singing became her solace and salvation. Accompanied by the dynamic ensemble The Persephone Project\, festuring Michelle John (cello)\, Hope Csutoros (violin)\, and Phillipa Safey (piano). Don’t miss an unforgettable evening where music\, storytelling\, and style collide in vibrant harmony. \n\nLyric Opera Presents: Their Voices Will Rise \nWednesday 14 May – 7:30pm \nPrepare for an electrifying evening of world premieres and daring musical narratives. Australian rising star Meta Cohen unveils a thrilling and major new song cycle Kiss My Sword. With a libretto by Evan Bryson\, this fiercely queer reimagining of history plunges into the untamed world of Julie d’Aubigny—the 17th-century opera singer\, swordswoman\, and unapologetic rebel. A lover of women\, a defeater of men in duels\, and a trailblazing performer\, d’Aubigny’s story blazes across the stage – this opera explores her mythologisation and the multiplicity of stories about her. Scored for soprano\, mezzo-soprano\, and piano\, this premiere promises a powerful fusion of drama and desire. Being developed into a forthcoming full-scale opera production by renowned dramaturg/director Alyson Campbell\, this daring work is a major new addition to the classical Australian art song repertoire. \nAlongside Kiss My Sword\, the evening features Sally Whitwell’s luminous song cycle (He)art Songs—a deeply personal exploration of love\, identity\, and resilience\, written for tenor and piano with texts by Whitwell and Alex Gorbatov. The program concludes with Kevin March’s compelling Songs for Dark Times\, a raw and urgent outcry for our era\, set to the evocative words of Brecht\, Rilke\, and Bachmann. \nWith an internationally renowned cast bringing their talents to three exciting song cycles – mezzo-soprano Jessica Aszodi\, soprano Breanna Stuart\, soprano Livia Brash\, tenor Alex Gorbatov and pianist Coady Green\, and hosted by Lyric Opera Artistic Director Patrick Burns\, this is an unmissable night where music ignites the stage\, queer voices break boundaries\, and stories are told with unflinching truth. \n \n\nBeethoven – Czerny – Liszt: Piano Duets & Songs \nThursday 15 May – 7:30pm \nCoady Green and Glenn Riddle unite for a rare and dazzling program of piano four-hand gems from Beethoven\, his pupil Carl Czerny\, and Czerny’s own legendary protégé Franz Liszt. It began the immersive artistic process that has always been at the heart of her work\, aligning her creativity with nature and her social values. \n  \n“Cecilia Cairns finds energy and inspiration in the tangles of her family orchard. Her paintings illuminate the details of her life; her delight in the colours and shapes of domesticity; the harmony of people who work directly with the natural world and the interaction with the students in her art class. \nHer work celebrates what she sees in the natural world and opens us\, the viewers to where it might take us.” \nJill Sutton \n  \n“I try to express in painting the feelings that move me\, and the things that matter. Not only the landscape in front of me\, but how its connected to the people who are at work\, keeping it all going\, preserving the farm and the remaining bush. \nI thank the people who have taught me to paint and to teach\, either by example or academically which has been lifelong. \nI continue to be inspired by the shared painting experiences we have in the Monday art Class. \nAnd by the lifelong support of my family.” \nCeci Cairns[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Biography” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Out of the Orchard- Cecilia Cairns \nBy Jaynie Anderson \n  \nIn April 1966 I interviewed Douglas Cairns about his lifelong friendship with Sidney Nolan. As a teenager I had known his daughter Cecilia at Merton Hall where Yvonne Boyd taught us painting. Cecilia had been brought up on her parents’ apple orchard at Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula. Aged twelve she went to school in Melbourne. She lived in a household where music and art were always present. \nThe lush beauty and values of the Cairns apple orchard were celebrated by artists whom Cecilia had known as a child\, notably Merric and Arthur Boyd\, Sidney Nolan\, John Sinclair\, and John Yule as well as others. A photograph of Cecilia\, aged two in 1946\, taken by Sunday Reed\, with her parents\, Douglas and Anne Cairns\, shows her holding a doll made by Sunday. \nOne of the most important experiences for Cecilia the teenager was Arthur Boyd’s Swan flying through an Orchard (1959) which she watched him paint. The materiality of the wooden boxes in the foreground of the picture Arthur was creating\, evolved before her eyes\, as they were made with just a few strokes. Cecilia painted with a ‘dancing brush’\, thrusting marks with the impasto\, that characterizes her paintings. Works like her Picking Quinces (2004) were inspired by Arthur Boyd’s total immersion in the Merricks landscape\, each painterly touch bringing alive the sensation of the bush. \nThe apple orchard has been a source of continual inspiration for Cecilia. Letters record how the Boyds felt at ease there\, relaxed by the Peninsula air. Cecilia’s oil painting from 1962\, of the Beach at Shoreham demonstrates the freedom children enjoyed and still enjoy in this landscape of unspoilt beauty. Some of the Banksias that Merric Boyd drew could be still flourishing on Merricks beach. \nDouglas Cairns friendship with Nolan began in June 1940 when he visited Nolan’s famous abstract exhibition at his studio on Russell Street\, the only visitor to buy a painting. Nolan and Cairns were inspired by a mutual admiration for Søren Kirkegaard\, each always travelling with a selection of Kirkegaard’s Journals\, in the belief that a single protagonist can assert his identity against society. They were equally passionate about music\, especially song. Cairns had a beautiful voice that Sunday Reed admired when he sang songs by John Dowland. Cairns\, a conscientious objector\, and his wife\, bought an apple orchard at Merricks North in June 1942. Neither parent came from a farming family\, but they chose to become farmers as a wholesome and morally acceptable lifestyle. \nCairns retreated from Parkville to Merricks\, giving Nolan the key to the loft he had rented in Parkville (behind 34 Gatehouse Street)\, allowing Nolan to escape from the hothouse atmosphere of Heide\, and the Cairns (Douglas and Anne) to immerse themselves in the rural paradise of Merricks with visits from the Boyds and other artists. \nAs in her painting Truck Shed\, Cecilia celebrates her love of rustic living in pictures in small dimensions that recall the classic shapes of the Heidelberg School. A picture from the 1980’s reveals her love for the Shoalhaven River\, painted at Arthur Boyd’s property\, near Bundanoon\, for her a continuation of Merricks. \nCecilia studied with John Brack at the Gallery School for several years. I remember Brack in 1966\, whom I also interviewed about Nolan’s time at the Gallery School. He was a charming and witty man. Unlike some of the other teachers Brack was inspirational and concentrated on bringing out an individual talent and style. Brack\, then painting nudes on Persian rugs\, gave weekly lectures on technique as well as individual critiques when he would comment on a student’s work. Even so he was bound to technical best practice. Cecilia remembers how she learnt to make Black Oil\, as a medium. The paintings she produced at the Gallery School are influenced by Brack in motif and technique. Cecilia’s Still life with an Asparagus Tin\, has flowers in jars painted on a Persian rug\, while the ever-present orchard is glimpsed through the window. \nThis very positive experience of teaching remained with her forever. She taught at Preshil\, a co-educational progressive school for ten years and continues to teach from her studio at Merricks on the Peninsula\, an experience which is recorded in her painting of the Art Class at Shoreham. There she continues the Brack tradition of teaching by commenting on the student’s work and their technique\, nurturing different styles. Cecilia won several prizes at the National Gallery School for portraiture and still life\, and on the Peninsula\, received local art prizes. \nFrom 1976 to 1980 Cecilia was an assistant to Arthur Boyd in England\, working in his London studio\, preparing copper plates\, stretching canvas\, and assisting with lithography. The Australian poet\, Michael Dugan\, described work in her exhibition at the Bookshop Gallery in Hampstead in 1979: \n“Cecilia Cairns’ paintings and etching hold a peculiarly haunting quality of their own created by the artist’s extremely personal vision of the world she inhabits. Her images are familiar ones – landscapes of town and country\, remembered scenes from childhood and interpretations of immediate domestic environment. In her pictures we see our world through the eyes of a gentle\, though not uncritical\, observer of the situation in which we live.” \nA constant theme for Cecilia is the beach whether walking along the shore at Merricks in the winter\, or at Shoreham. She depicts beach scenes that are nostalgic for those of us who grew up on the Peninsula\, that convey a wonderful melancholic feeling of walking along the sand on an unspoilt beach. \nWhen she was a kid\, her family never had a car but used to travel in a horse and cart. Cecilia’s observations on the traditions of the orchard is a moving tribute to the customs of the Peninsula\, an old way of farming apples\, brands like Democrats\, and of rustic living\, one that inspired creativity among special artists\, and still does today. Following Kirkegaard\, like her father and Nolan\, she is an individual who stands out against the banal conventions of society\, as does her art. \nThe orchard continues with Ceci’s sister Eve\, and Douglas Cairns’ granddaughter\, Lisa Cresswell’s Seven Oaks Cider.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1743575515586-9abfaece-505c”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night \nTuesday 29 April\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

that this exhibition is broader in its exploration.  The impetus behind this exhibition developed as a response to the imposition of the digital world.  Ubiquitous algorithms blend the individual away.  I am captive to nostalgic aesthetic notions where objects and images identify idiosyncratic characteristics of the maker. \nCarving as an analogue process allows for gradation\, movement and subtle variations where marks and imperfections are visible rather than erased.  The outer and the inner workings of the body are shown through simple gestures\, clear lines and a sense of organic ebb and flow.  Through this series I have been interested in the analogous continuum between physical form and inner experience.  The composition plays with proportionality\, both consciously and unconsciously.  Some of the works have been truncated\, others have been elongated.  Vessels and chambers travel through\, under and around each other. \nIn order to leave a mark on this world\, I am conveying the workings of my imagination.  Inevitably both attributes and limitations are exposed.  The battle between the two is where the work is made.  Often there is a contest between freedom of imagination and paralysing fear.  Some of the poses play with notions of surrender\, contortion\, distortion\, inversion and burying your gaze.  These are expressed in both awkward and graceful manner. \nTurning the world upside down is an attempt to disrupt the dominant digital paradigm.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” The exhibition records the lives of mostly women and children in an attempt to reveal the complexity and diversity of an existence in difficult circumstances. While viewers may find some of the imagery disturbing\, the exhibition is an attempt to show the full spectrum of life where children are loved\, food can be scarce\, education is cherished\, and laughter and music lie around every corner. Documentary photography however rigorous\, will always be subjective. If these images are successful\, the viewer will “see” but more importantly “feel” each moment in front of the lens. And it is this deeper engagement that might encourage empathy and connection and perhaps help change the lives of millions in need. \nhttps://www.markchew.com.au/ \nLiving Room by Alicia and Archie  \nFilm makers Alicia and Archie originally began their practice together in Melbourne\, Australia before moving to the UK to work on large narrative television projects. Having previously made video art in Melbourne the duo are now in the process of creating a moving image projection piece that aims to uncover what it feels like to be an East African person who has chosen to make London their home. What does a person give up? What does a person gain? \nThe title of the project “Living Room” is intended to have multiple interpretations. In London there is frequent use of cars as an additional “living space”. When homes and flats get overcrowded young people often retreat to their cars to chat\, hang out and even share meals. \n“Living Room” can also be associated with the practice of immigration. People who migrate often feel limited in the country of their birth when it comes to careers\, life goals or self-expression. London is a city of opportunity. Alternately\, moving to London comes with the strains of modern metropolis living. There is literally not enough room to live in. \nTold across London\, Nairobi and Kampala\, the intention is to interview participants inside a car. In a calm and informal environment you will hear about the emotions associated with leaving home and what it now means to call England “home”. You will also hear from participants who used to live in the United Kingdom but have now returned to East Africa. Visually you will see montages of driving imagery which will intercut between England\, Kenya and Uganda. \nSo\, on a cold afternoon in London\, you will hop into a car and hear about what it means to be East African in London.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Mark Chew is one of Australia’s pre-eminent Documentary and Editorial Photographers. \nBased in Melbourne\, Australia\, Mark’s projects take him all over the world as do his global publications. \nOriginally from England\, Mark moved to Australia in 1985 after an apprenticeship in London with some of the leading advertising photographers of the era. \nSince then his work has taken him all over the world with assignments in places such as India\, Kenya\, Uganda\, Tanzania\, Vanuatu\, Viet Nam\, Laos\, Fiji\, and Papua New Guinea. \nWith a career spanning 30 years\, Mark’s current clients include Australia’s leading educational institutions\, peak tourism bodies\, and publishers. \nHowever\, it is his work with the not-for-profit sector and non-government organisations that align best with his personal values; He endeavours to tell visual stories with authenticity and truthfulness\, traits that are becoming threatened by world of AI and fractured attention spans. As aid and development budgets are shattered\, our concern for the most vulnerable\, must go beyond our local communities\, and into the global sphere. \nMark invites you to slow down\, to put your phone away\, look hard at each photograph and for a short moment to place yourselves in the shoes of another. He asks you not to feel guilty for all that you have\, but instead feel a connection to another human being. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1741327032836-f747e2e7-e84c”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening Night Celebration \nTuesday 1 April\, 5-7pm \nArtist Q&A \nSaturday 5 April\, 2-3:30pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Here\, Knight celebrates her debut exhibition. Twisting materiality from hard to soft\, she creates abstract depictions of Agate and Geode formations as large scale tufted and carved woollen pieces. \nCharlotte Ivey is a visual artist based in Merri-bek\, born in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Ivey’s work is led by the impulses of the body – exploring the illusory nature of psychological states\, and how they dictate our experience of external environments. She charts a territory somewhere between the traditionally ‘beautiful’ and ‘distasteful’. \nSimon Leah uses the unpredictable results of the patina process in his assembled metal sculptural works to celebrate the abstract beauty of ‘chance’ within his considered purposeful forms. \nLana Daubermann’s practice is rooted in plein air observation of the Australian landscape. Here\, she loosens into an abstracted approach\, favouring shape\, colour\, and gesture over realism. \nFor all four artists\, the process of creation is of utmost importance\, leaving us with works that truly resonate with a depth beyond the finished surface.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1739258733315-b1398f5b-680a”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night celebration \nTuesday 18th of March\, 5-7pm \n  \nExtra opening hours \nSunday 23rd March\, 12-4pm \n  \nArtist talk \nSaturday 29th March\, 2pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Exhibition Catalogue” color=”warning” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Ffortyfivedownstairs.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F03%2F2025_45Downstairs_SuperNatural_CATALOGUE_update19March.pdf”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The artworks are based on photographic collaborations with local photographers and models\, as well as non-referenced drawings. The series examines the deep psychological connection with the pose and innermost private movements. The poses are influenced by medieval\, baroque\, and Renaissance paintings\, contrasted with a focus on contemporary models selected for their confidence and individuality. Mezzini’s paintings reveal the meaningful search for the perfection of our outer persona\, internal experience\, trust in one another\, and pleasure\, all in the hours of the cool\, calm darkness. \nThe compositional process allowed the artist to use light and colour to represent the abstract elements\, with the intention of moving the viewer into the pattern of the chosen pose. By incorporating input from subjects\, studio photography\, and drawings\, the artist unified the material and form of all the paintings into a coherent theme and statement. These works were all created using oil paint to achieve a visceral skin and light quality influenced by various sources. Approaching figure and expression style from an abstract perspective offers a new and unfamiliar visual treatment of the subject matter. \nIn the last few years\, Mezzini has rediscovered the process of making art. He strived to reinvent himself initially\, working within his previous area of experience\, which was abstract art. Believing that artistic evolution is paramount\, he shifted his studies from abstraction to figurative art and pursued a different motif with these pieces. Each year\, he completely changed every part of his approach in this series to strengthen his chosen theme.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s CV” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]EXHIBITIONS \n1994                      Graduates Exhibition group exhibition \n2019                     45 Downstairs solo “E lascia dir le genti” \n2019                     Art Box Switzerland top 100 artworks “Ad Apicem” \n2019                     Art Box Miami \n2019                      Emerge Brunswick st Gallery – group exhibition \n2021                      45 Downstairs solo “mɔ.nuˈmɛn̪.t̪um” Postponed to January 2022 \n2021                      Primo Red group Exhibition – C&H gallery \n2021                      Here again 45 Downstairs online group exhibition \n2021                      Aliorum portrait Exhibition – POME gallery \n2022                     45 Downstairs solo “Monumentum” \n2022                     RED Exhibition – POME gallery \n2023                     45 Downstairs solo “Primavera” \n2023                     Beinart Gallery group Exhibition “Toddler pillar” \n2024                     Brunswick st gallery 50×50 \n  \nMEDIA \nMay 2019 Sunday Age – Art Sunday promotion solo exhibition “ELascia dir le Genti” \nApril 2019 Art Almanac promotion “ELascia dir le Genti” \nJune 2019 News fox Switzerland Australian Artist Awarded “Ad Apicem” \nNovember 2019 Penthouse Magazine online – Print Feb 2020 “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2020 Recorder south Australia “artist roller coaster” \nJanuary 2022 Penthouse Magazine online “the Artist and the Muse” \nApril 2022 Last post Magazine “Artist John Mezzini” \nJune 2023 Beat magazine “Primavera” \n  \nFacebook: johnmezzinart \nInstagram: jmezz1974[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1739258637508-d8c5fddf-7c10″][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night celebrations \nTuesday 18th of March\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This remarkable work resonates universally and speaks directly to our times\, inviting audiences into a world both familiar and painfully revealing\, a world that lingers long after the final bow. \nImage by Ben Andrews[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cast and Creatives” tab_id=”1452941644640-19a0de81-e87a0201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f142bf-acdf”][vc_column_text css=””]Cast: Ben Walter\, Karl Richmond\, Justin Hosking\, Damon Baudin\, Akeel Purmanund\nwith: Pepe Wright\, Avyakt Pawar\, Smith Barling \nDirector: Keegan Bragg \nProducer: Ben Andrews \nStage Manager: Ella Campbell \nLighting + Sound Operator: Zsuzsa Gaynor Mihaly \nSet Design: Ben Andrews \nCostume Design + Scenic Art: Louisa Fitzgerald \nLighting Design: Georgina Wolfe \nSound Design: Ethan Hunter \nDrag Wig + Makeup Artist:  Becky Silveira \nMarketing: Bridie Pamment \nVocal / Accent Coach: Matt Furlani \nIntimacy Coordinator: Tegan Crowley[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ticket Prices and Concessions” tab_id=”1452941768731-94b426f3-57530201-342dcb0a-2ec9a177-581a2513-a5c51f1f-8993a3c4-5ca5cb85-3d54189f-4d6f8ba6-b9f142bf-acdf”][vc_column_text css=””]\nTicket Prices:\nPreview: $35\nFull: $49\nConcession: $39\nGroup 6+: $39 \nConcessions:\nPensioners/Full-time students/MEAA members \nTicket sales are subject to a booking fee of $3.00 per ticket plus any merchant charges for payments by American Express \nTicket fees are charged reluctantly. It is inspired by the objects patterns and colour combinations around her. The common thread which weaves her paintings together is her use of flowers in her intimate still lives. \nFollowing on from her previous body of work “The Lamp Series” the works on display at this exhibition ‘Still’ explore the same theme. Lamps\, flowers\, vases\, mirrors and fabric are gathered and arranged and depicted in great detail. However this series makes a departure from her previous work in that these current still life works are painted in oil on raw ply. Most of Alexandra’s previous work was painted in gouache on cardboard or canvas\, in order to acheive a high level of detail. \nAs this major body of work progressed Alexandra’s bold use of line and colour in oil progressed in terms of its delicacy and attention to detail. What started as a series of quick\, robust still lives in oil became more involved. Attention to detail became more intrinsic. The works started taking longer to paint and Alexandra’s skill with oil paint and powers of observation developed. Colour on colour and pattern on pattern emerged. Schemes were explored where colours were used harmoniously and the palette was limited. \nAlexandra is predominately self taught as a painter. She completed a short oil painting course at Camberwell College in London in 1998 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics at RMIT. From there she graduated as a Secondary Visual Art Teacher from Melbourne University with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. She has also attained a certificate of Floristry and does flowers for weddings \nCurrently living in South Melbourne\, Alexandra lived in a small cottage in Daylesford for over ten years. Her quarter of an acre established cottage garden was a constant source of inspiration for her painting practice. Having flowers to pick and paint all year round was a joy. Alexandra began to plant the garden in particular schemes with a view to having vistas and colour arrangements to paint. One of her ‘en plein air’ garden paintings is included in this exhibition. \nAlexndra has had numerous exhibitions in Melbourne and has been represented at- and held exhibitions at- the Hive Gallery in Ocean Grove. \nAlexandra also paints interiors\, miniature landscapes\, cityscapes and occasionally portraits. She would like to do more ceramics and explore painting in the abstract.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Events” tab_id=”1739258512218-3737ff8b-2b1f”][vc_column_text css=””]Opening night celebrations  \nTuesday 4th of March\, 5-7pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Like many\, my preconceptions of America mainly came from film and television. But landscapes and monuments that are so vast and breathtaking can’t be compressed effectively into either of those mediums. Somehow the scale always gets lost. It seems the most appropriate reaction to these things in real life is to stand and stare (or pose for pictures in front of them). \nThe West has the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley\, the buttes and mesas recognisable from classic western movies and Roadrunner cartoons. Further north there’s a chance of running into a Wizard-of-Ozlike tornado which\, as it turns out\, can be house levelling. \nThe east coast also has its monuments\, the most iconic of which is probably the Statue of Liberty\, beautiful in spite of the patina of blue-green corrosion that is the inevitable fate of all copper\, especially when its final resting place leaves it exposed to salty harbour air. \nAs an outsider experiencing the difference of a land and culture which I mistakenly thought would be familiar\, I was surprised by how much and how quickly I developed a strong affection for this overwhelming\, complex and strangely beautiful place. This body of work is an attempt to represent some of the things mentioned above as they look and how they felt.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]James Bryans has been exhibiting since the mid-nineties\, presenting work in national and international institutions such as Stills Gallery\, NSW\, the National Portrait Gallery\, UK\, Centre for Contemporary Photography\, Linden Gallery\, and Green Floor Gallery\, VIC\, and the Melbourne Immigration Museum. At Tweed River Regional Gallery he has been selected as a finalist for the Olive Cotton Award for Photographic Portraiture (2006) and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award (2003\, 2002 Judges Commendation\, 2000\, 1999). In 2008\, ArtWorld Magazine featured him in their Photography Supplement edition. In 2024 he was selected as part of the Head On Photo Festival Open Program.
